windows 8 apps

One of the best features of Windows 8 is that it allows us to run PC games and apps on touchscreen devices like the Surface Pro. Whereas Windows RT tablets are limited to playing Windows RT games, full Windows 8 tablets can play not only tablet-oriented Windows 8 games but also Windows 7 games.

Of course, hardly any PC games actually support touch screen input. Civilization V is touch-optimized, but that's practically it. If you want to play a PC game on your tablet, you generally need either a controller or mouse and keyboard. But a handy new app called Touch Fox adds virtual controls to a handful of PC games that don't otherwise support touch. How does it work? Check out hands-on impressions with video to find out!

Windows Phone 8.1 removed the ability to natively share a status update to multiple networks at once through the Me tile. We’ve seen apps like UniShare and MultiShare rise up to address the missing functionality. One Love is an app that’s been out for quite some time that shares to Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn like those other apps, but it does a little bit more too. Let’s check it out.

Last month we told you guys about a beta for a Windows Phone app called Boxcryptor. It’s an app that a lot of folks concerned over privacy and protecting their data might want to look into. Most of us use services like OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive and Box to store and retrieve files in the cloud. Those services retain the right to search the content that you store on their services. Boxcryptor allows you to encrypt your data before storing it to the cloud. There’s been a Windows desktop app for quite some time, but we’re now getting a Windows Phone and Windows 8 app today. Let’s check it out.

Reddit (www.reddit.com) likes to call itself the 'front page of the internet'; it is a place where anyone on the World Wide Web can gather together to share content. The content is sorted into various “Subreddits” and then is voted upon by “up” or “down” buttons. Essentially, Reddit is an online news and entertainment source with user curated submissions that are voted upon by the community.

If you have even opened a web browser since June of 2005, when the site originally launched, then we have to assume that you have probably used Reddit or at the very least, visited it. Today, we are going to take a look at different ways to visit Reddit through some of our favorite Windows 8 apps available in the Windows Store.

We have mentioned the Windows Phone app NCAA March Madness Live before. It is the official Windows Phone app for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament that delivers stats, news, scores and live streaming of all the tournament games to your Windows Phone.

This past week we were finally able to put the Windows Phone app to the test. Tournament games began last Thursday and we have been very pleased so far with the March Madness Live’s performance.

There’s about seven months to go until we hit October. Which is a great month for a little thing called Oktoberfest. We’ve started practicing and should be good to go hard when the festivities roll around. One way we keep track of all the beer we consume is a social network called Untappd. It’s a great place to connect with your fellow beer aficionados. We’ve looked at the official app before, but now we’re looking at a third-party app for Windows 8. We can nearly guarantee you’ll be downloading Hoppd when we finish this post. Let’s check it out.

We’re always on the hunt for great apps across Windows Phone and Windows 8. We find that the Windows Phone Store has had a longer time to mature than the Windows Store. Which is why it’s easier for us to find high quality apps on Windows Phone, but more time is probably needed for the Windows Store to see killer apps in higher numbers. Reddit! is one of those higher quality Windows 8 app. With Reddit! you can browse the popular online community. Let’s check it out.

We’ve covered the journey of Firefox for Windows 8 since the project was announced in late 2012. Our first real look at the app came in February 2013 when we took the app for a spin and did a hands-on of Firefox for Windows 8. This past August the team at Mozilla announced that Firefox for Windows 8 would come out in December.

We later learned that the release was pushed back to 2014. A bunch of updates later and the app finally went into open beta last month. Turns out that was all for nothing. Mozilla is killing Firefox for Windows 8.

Last week a few new apps came to the Windows Store that you might have missed. They’re all related and come to us from media and entertainment company NBCUniversal. This is the mega company that powers and controls such networks in the United States like NBC News, CNBC, MSNB, The Weather Channel NBC Sports, Syfy, E!, USA Network, Telemundo and more. We already have NBC Sports on Windows 8, but now we get three new apps for Syfy, Telemundo and USA.

Do I need an umbrella today? Most of you answer this by just looking out your window when you wake up. That might cut it in a place like southern California, but head anywhere else and you’re going to need to check the weather forecast to dress accordingly. Let’s check out the best weather apps on Windows 8.

Weather apps are a little tricky to review and rank. There are many different users who all look for something different from a weather app. You know, different strokes for different folks. Some put a higher importance on accuracy, while others want a weather app that looks good. We spent the last few days trying out a handful of weather apps in the Windows Store and walked away being most impressed by the following. In no particular order, here they are.

Email. It’s essential. It’s important. And on Windows 8, there’s a dearth of quality Gmail apps that fully embrace the Modern design language. Sure, you have your web-wrapper apps that look like a native Gmail client, but people want the real deal. And push notifications. And Live Tiles.

MetroMail is that full native client for Windows Phone 8. We’ve covered it in the past and watched as the app has grown over the last few months. Today, its Windows 8.1 counterpart is now available. The best part? If you bought the Windows Phone version, you can generate a code within the app to fully-unlock the Windows 8 app, all for free.

The official Twitter app on Windows 8 sucks. It hasn’t seen an update in months and it doesn’t even fully take advantage of the unique new features in Windows 8.1. It’s just not that great, which is unacceptable for an app and company with over 2,000 employees and a market cap of $31.44 billion. Twitter claims north of 230 million users and we think those users on Windows 8 deserve a great Twitter app. Thank heaven for Tweetium.

When Xbox Music and Xbox Video first came out on Windows 8 they offered an abysmal experience. Especially when compared to the Zune desktop app, their spiritual successor. Thankfully that didn’t last too long, the Windows 8.1 refresh to both apps made them usable and enjoyable again. They’ve slowly been picking updates up over the past few months and today we’ve got another for both Xbox Video and Xbox Music.

I went to this week’s Apps World event in San Francisco to search for mobile Windows games and apps. Wouldn’t you know it? I’ve turned up a few! Before we roll out the games coverage, we’ll first reveal a find that came within the Apps World TV Hackfest area. That section of the show deals specifically with video viewing apps, technology, and lots of coughing. Okay, probably not the coughing.

Within the TV Hackfest area, we met with Anthony Rose, Co-founder and CTO of Zeebox. The Zeebox second-screen TV app offers a customizable TV guide, news feeds for users’ favorite shows, discussion rooms for those shows, and more. Lucky for us, Zeebox and Microsoft are partnering to bring a Zeebox app to Windows 8 and RT in the coming weeks! Check out our video interview to see how Zeebox will make watching the shows you like better and easier – with the help of your Windows tablet.

Campfire is an excellent chat and collaboration service from 37signals (www.37signals.com), enabling businesses to host multiple chat rooms for employees to engage with one another and improve workflow and productivity. Running the web client on Windows 8 is an absolute breeze and feels native enough, but what if you're using a tablet? This is where a Metro app comes into play. Unfortunately, 37signals have failed to provide such an app on the Windows Store. Cue Spark.
