Windows 8 Phone? No... it's not a typo

Remember i-Mate from the Windows Mobile days? They made the rugged Windows Mobile hand-set that could survive just about anything. Now it appears that the company is working to produce a Windows 8 Phone.

No... not a Windows Phone 8 device, but a phone running Windows 8.

Rumors have the company introducing a 4.7" device running Windows 8 Pro at Mobile World Congress 2013. The device will be powered by an Atom processor, 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and work with HSPA+ and LTE 4G wireless networks.

There is and has been elephant in the room among Windows Phone and Windows 8 users, the app gap. I’m not talking about numbers here, but the difference in high quality apps. Don’t get me wrong, we have our fair share of kickass applications, but if you’re a startup and you’re developing an app – it’s aimed at iOS or Android first. That’s ok, things will change as both Windows 8 and Windows Phone gain market share and mindshare. However until then you might not get to try out the latest fadapp (an app that’s a fad – like Words with Friends or Snapchat).

So what’s a tech nerd to do? Well, if you’ve got a Surface Pro, you can run some Android apps using BlueStacks software. Read on to find out how.

Microsoft is wrapping up its limited special offer on Windows 8 upgrades for consumers today. As well as this, the free offer on Windows Media Center (windows.microsoft.com) for Windows 8 Pro is also coming to an end. The company has offered free product keys for those with Windows Pro to add Media Center and enjoy functionality not offered in a vanilla Windows installation.

Microsoft announced that along with the launch of Windows 8, the software will be accompanied by a limited time offer for upgrade packages. The company reaffirmed earlier this month that that special pricing would end at some point in the future. This date of closing is soon approaching, so this article is to serve as a reminder to get in quick and snap up some Windows 8 upgrades before the price is raised.

Tomorrow may be the last day to snag the early bird upgrade price on Windows 8 Pro, but students have a bit of wiggle room going forward.

For whatever reason if you were planning on upgrading your PC to Windows 8 Pro, you should do it now and lock in that sweet $40 upgrade fee, because it goes up to $200 for Pro. However, students can wing it for $69.99 starting February 1st in the US with staggered roll outs depending on your location.

Lightning strikes twice, history repeats itself, and Microsoft will be giving out reservation cards for the Surface Pro like they did with the Surface RT. Back in October, if you visited a physical Microsoft Store or those pop-up holiday kiosks you could get a card guaranteeing you a Surface the day they went on sale. Microsoft is now doing the same with the Intel-based Surface for when it becomes available on February 9th.

As if Amazon wasn't doing well enough with Windows 8 sales, seeing pre-orders dominate it's Best Sellers list, they have decided to sweeten the deal. Now you can pre-order Windows 8 Pro for $69.99 and get a $30 Amazon credit to boot. For those of you who aren't too good at subtraction, that brings the price down to $39.99, the same cost as the online upgrade price for current users of previous Windows versions.

Besides the Nokia offerings from AT&T tonight, there were also a few Windows 8 tablets on hand including the stylish Samsung ATIV.

The ATIV Tablet features a whopping 11.6" HD display with an Intel Atom dual-core CPU (Intel Clover Trail 1.5 GHz). That display makes it a little bit big but not bad by any means. It just feels long especially since the iPad has set the parameters for more square-ish offerings.

Having said that, the ATIV Tablet is really nice—just a solid machine that’s feels great to hold. It was super fast too, blasting through Windows 8 apps like it was a on a desktop PC. And with 64GB of on board memory, SD expansion and ports galore in addition to the dual front and rear cameras, there is really nothing it can't do.

If the Windows 8 Pro is your angle for a tablet, take a good look at the Samsung ATIV when it hits in November.
