Here in the United States, Square is a very popular solution for business owners wanting to accept credit and debit cards using their smartphones. Remember back in June when Microsoft announced their collaboration with Unity and focused on helping developers create applications and publish for Windows platforms? This past year we’ve seen some pretty serious growth when it comes to startups developing apps for Windows Phone. Still, market share is a little north of 4% globally depending on which market analysis you go off of. There’s still plenty of work left to be done in order to attract startups that are typically short on both cash and man power. Sometimes they just need a little convincing that there’s enough interest in their upcoming service on Windows Phone.

The last few months have been pretty good for the Windows Phone ecosystem. There have been some great devices announced by Nokia and other OEMs, more and more popular apps coming to the Windows Phone Store, and more than one research agency testifying the growth.

Today, leakster Twitter account @evleaks revealed the codenames of two upcoming Nokia Windows Phones, the "Goldfinger" and "Moneypenny." As well as these new smartphones, Nokia is also reported to be working on "3D Touch," utilising hardware sensors to enable you to manipulate things on-screen through gestures. Similar to what you can do already with Nokia Glance

Windows Phone moved 9.3 million handsets in the third quarter of 2013, according to a report from the IDC. That’s an increase of 156% for the same period year-over-year. Nokia was responsbile for 93.2% of those shipped. 

The current status of Windows Phone’s market share is always interesting. We’ve never really received solid numbers from Microsoft, instead we rely on third-party data from market researchers and analysts. We’ve seen some recent data from comScore, Kantar, and Strategy Analytics. Now we’re getting some new data from IDC. The big takeaway? Windows Phone saw shipments grow 156% year-over-year for the third quarter. Details below.

Nokia announced a new photography-focused app called "StoryTeller" in Abu Dhabi last month. The new tool offers a way to organize image and video files on Lumia Windows Phones, according to the time or location they are taken. We knew the software will be released in the near future, but weren't entirely sure when. Now a beta version of StoryTeller is available on the Windows Phone Store.

As it currently stands, should you wish to develop for both Windows 8 and Windows Phone, you'll need to take out two subscriptions - one for each platform. WPDang now reports that Microsoft is looking to combine both into a combined account, making it easier for developers to move from one platform to the next and cover not only the desktop but also the smartphone too.

A new report published by comScore shows steady growth in the US for Windows Phone, a significant contrast to what we saw earlier in the year. While Android remains the number one platform in the region with Apple sat in second, Microsoft is pretty much level with BlackBerry, who has been struggling to halt the downhill fall the company has experienced.

According to Canalys, and independent analyst firm, Windows Phone grew its share of pie to four percent in Q3 2013, while Android and iOS stayed static.

The report cited that nearly a quarter of billion smartphones shipped in the three-month period, a 44 percent year-over-year increase. Windows Phone accounted for 9.2 million of these units, a growth of 185 percent.

Strong sales for Windows Phone is seen across Europe, the United States and Australia, signaling strong momentum for Microsoft’s mobile platform

Kantar Worldpanel’s numbers for September 2013 show continued strong growth for Windows Phone, especially in Europe where double digit sales are seen in the Great Britain (11.4%), France (10.7%) and Italy (13.7%).  The data collected spans 3 months, up until September.

In terms of sales for September 2013, Windows Phone has claimed 10% for the “big five” European countries combined (UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain), representing a doubling in sales from 12 months ago, marking a substantial increase from 2012.

Data from Strategy Analytics suggests sales of Windows Phone units were up over 275% year-over-year for the third quarter. 

Windows Phone has been in third place for mobile operating systems for quite some time. The latest developments around BlackBerry only widen the lead for Windows Phone, while cementing its spot in third. However, to catch up to the likes of Android and iOS it has a lot of work left to do. The latest numbers in market share and global shipments show Windows Phone making solid progress in the third quarter of 2013.

Children In Need is the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) charity for the UK. Kicking off in 1980, the charity has raised more than £600 million for disabled children and young people. The highlight of each year is a "telethon" aired on BBC One with celebrities and well-known faces.

Along with the telethon and other activities, an official Children In Need single is also selected. This year it's Ellie Goulding's turn with How Long Will I Love You (originally performed by The Waterboys). Why is this news? The official music video is shot entirely with a Nokia Lumia 1020.

Nokia's next update, titled "Lumia Black" (Bittersweet Shimmer) is set to bring yet more features to the table. If you're a fan of the Glance screen, this will be an update for you. Destined to ship in the coming weeks, Lumia Black will improve the Glance feature, a screen that becomes active when the Windows Phone is in standby mode. The improvements will include background support, more colours and support for more notifications.

Microsoft is launching new gift cards that will be used for purchases on Xbox, Windows and Windows Phone stores. Consumers will be able to purchase games, music, movies, shows, apps and more. We recently looked at a leak that detailed a launch for the gift cards to match Windows 8.1 (October 22nd), but you can already pick them up at a Germany retailer and Amazon UK.
