Yelp

Ever since Yelp (www.yelp.com) hit version 2.0 earlier this year, the company has been steadily trickling our new features to give it parity with its iOS and Android counterparts. Last night the latest version of the app, one for Windows Phone 7.x and one for 8, was bumped to version 2.0.0.3 and 2.5.1.4 respectively and it brings along with it a few nice changes.

There isn’t a detailed changelog though we do note you still can’t add full reviews. Instead, the app will save a “draft”, which you then need to finish on your own time on the PC. That's kind of a weak implementation, though we suppose it may weed out the insta-angry reviews that sometimes people bang away while still in the restaurant.

Yelp! gets updated, adds reservations and check-ins

Yelp! is a popular location based search app for our Windows Phone. You can search for nearby bars, restaurants, cafes, gas stations, banks, and more. Then read reviews, get directions to, find deals and view photos of the businesses.  You even have an augmented reality feature that throws up an overlay on the camera view of the businesses in your area.

Yelp! was updated today for both Windows Phone 8 (v2.5) and Windows Phone 7.5 (v2). While there's no official change log, it appears the new features includes the ability to make reservations through OpenTable without the need to leave the Yelp! app, write reviews and the ability to check-in to share your location with other Yelp! friends.

While we don't have Siri (and Woz misses it) we do have Ask Ziggy which is getting closer and closer to Apple's AI. Some of the last few updates were interesting for Ziggy but the one for today comes across as stabilizing in addition to adding a few new features:

  • Live Calendar integration
  • Fixed annoying pop-ups ("query canceled", etc...)
  • New toggle to add/remove secondary Reminders tile
  • Yelp integration local and remote with multiple tappable areas on results
  • Improved splash screen animation
  • Fixed greeting issue + mic states
  • Improved overall performance
  • Search Tweets by topic "Tweets for NFL Combine"

We've been throwing lots of questions at it and the results seem more accurate (and quicker too) than in previous versions.  The Live Calendar integration looks to be a huge bonus for many of you who need to make appointments and the search Tweets feature is certainly a new twist.  Using Yelp for search results should also help you find that local bar or coffee shop too.

Overall, we're impressed with the update and seeing as the app is still free (and ad free) we so no reason for you to not try it. And if you have tried it in the past, you may want to re-download it and give version 2.3 a spin.

Hit us up on comments if you're seeing any improvements or have some tips to make it better. Grab Azk Ziggy here in the Windows Phone Marketplace. Thanks, Vishal, for the tip!

Software Review: Yelp!

Yelp! is a free application being offered over a the Marketplace for Windows Phone 7. Yelp! is a search engine that locates business that are close to your current location.

Searches are done from the various category tiles or you can narrow down things by using the search field. In using the search fields, you can also search different locations.

You can pull up detailed information about each business that includes contact information (phone number, web site, address) and reviews generated through Yelp's main website.

Locations can be displayed on a BING map as well as travel directions. The only thing missing is a "home" button to send you back to Yelp's main page. As is, the app is very dependent on the back arrow.

Yelp! (link opens your Zune browser) is a stable application for your Windows Phone that can come in handy when your traveling or simply looking for a new place to eat.

Check Yelp out in action after the break.
