Threefall, a ridiculously fast-paced Windows Phone game scores as today's AdDuplex HERO app

Threefall is an arcade game that is available for Windows Phone that has minimal graphics and a zippy pace. The game calls on you to spin a collection of dots where they avoid getting hit by an onslaught of spikes that race across the screen.

Threefall is also today's HERO App, which is a promotional campaign for Windows Phone and Windows developers on the AdDuplex Network. The campaign partners AdDuplex with AppDeals, TechRewards{.nofollow} and Windows Central to deliver a host of benefits to the top apps and games each month. Our role in the HERO App campaign is to offer a little exposure to these titles by sharing them with you, our readers.

Threefall is not a very complicated game and the main menu reflects the game's minimal approach to things. The main menu contains options to access the game's single setting (mute the sound), jump into gameplay and choose your color theme (nine choices). You will also see your high score and gaming level displayed on the main menu.

There is neither a help section nor a tutorial with Threefall that may be the game's biggest knock. It will not take you long to figure things out but a simple tutorial or how-to screen would be a nice touch and avoid a little frustration.

Gameplay is sorted into five areas that appear to be based on your gaming level. You start out playing Threefall from the first gaming area and as you score points, your experience increases and eventually your gaming level.

The gaming screen has three dots positioned in triangle formation and positioned about three quarters down the display. Your gaming score is positioned in the bottom, center of the screen and a pause button rests in the bottom, left corner.

A few seconds after you jump into gameplay, spikes will begin to fall from the top of the screen. The spikes race towards your triangle of dots and you need to spin them around to allow the spikes to soar through the formation and avoid hitting any of the dots. You spin the triangle by tapping and holding the screen. The spinning motion is counterclockwise and once a spike safely passes through the dots, you will need to immediately adjust your formation's position to address the next spot.

The longer you survive, the faster the spikes fall and should a spike hit any of your dots, the game ends. When that happens, you will earn your experience points and have the option to restart the game or return to the main menu.

Again, there isn't much there with Threefall but what is in place works nicely. Graphics and controls are minimal, yet gameplay can be painfully challenging. Overall, the free, ad-supported Threefall is a fun Windows Phone game to pass the time and lends itself nicely to one-handed gameplay.
