Hot on the heels of today's update of VLC for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, the popular free media player finally has an update for Windows Phone users after several months. However, the app update is being offered as a public beta rather than in its regular spot in the Windows Phone Store.
According to the app's main developer, Thomas Nigro:
"Unfortunately, we couldn't release it on our main distribution channel because of an odd Windows Store issue (version number problem). As the amount of users asking for an update is tremendous, I decided to use our Private Beta channel and transform it to a Public Beta channel."
"The Public Beta channel works like Facebook and Facebook Beta. The first one is stable, well tested and should be OK for everyone, while the second brings new features, bug fixes … and potential new bugs. Facebook Beta is hidden, and you can download it only via a link -> Same for VLC Beta. It also means the VLC Beta channel will get updates more often."
Since the last update for the Windows Phone version of VLC was released several months ago, with the version number 188.8.131.52, that means the change log for the new 1.6.0 version contains everything listed between 184.108.40.206 and now. Nigro adds that the app should also run on the preview version of Windows 10 Mobile but adds that "phones get hot easily" when running it.
