In Short

The upgrade from Windows 8, Microsoft made Windows 8.1 generally available in October 2013 following earlier beta periods. Better still it was offered as a free update to anyone who was already in possession of a valid Windows 8 and Windows RT license.

Windows 8.1 offered visual improvements to the Start screen, better OneDrive integration, Internet Explorer 11, a universal search option powered by Bing and much more besides. It remains the latest version of Windows available officially to consumers until Windows 10 launches sometime in Fall, 2015.
