Windows Phone App Review: Health&

Health& for Windows Phone

If you need a simple Windows Phone app to track your weight, blood pressure, glucose levels, and medications take a look at Health&.  I liked the Health & app but it may not appeal to everyone.  The layout is simple, straight forward but I couldn't help but feel something was missing.

When you first launch Health& you will enter your vital statistics (height, weight, date of birth, etc.). You will also have the opportunity to set weight and blood pressure goals. If you ever need to change those goals or any of your profile information, just tap the three-dot menu on the main page to access the app's settings.

Speaking of settings, you also have the ability to hide any of the four categories just in case you don't need to track one area or another. Once your profile is established, you'll be sent to the main pages that displays your categories and your statistics. Icons will be displayed for each category (glucose, weight, blood pressure, and medication) and besides each icon will be the latest entry.  Your weight and BP goals will also be displayed.

Simply tap on the category icon you want to enter data and you're in business.  Each category entry is a little different from the other. With the exception of the Medication Category, each entry page will display previous entries and can be pinned to the Start Screen for direct access. Blood Pressure and Weight will have a button control to create a chart of your progress.  Additionally, blood pressure and weight data can be exported via email.  Live Tiles will display the category and your last measurement entry.

The Medication entry is more of a reference than tracking feature.  Tapping on the med icon will allow you to enter a new medication.  Tapping on the individual medication label besides the icon will send you to that particular medication entry.  You can enter the dosage, units and notes on taking the medication but it won't chart or remind you to take the meds (which would be nice).  While you can enter a date range, there is no reminder as to when a prescription will expire.

All in all, Health& is a nice, easy to navigate around health app for your Windows Phone.  While I think Health& has merit, it could be better.  I think such apps would benefit greatly by a reminder feature; one that would remind you to weigh in, check your blood sugar or pressure, or take your meds.  If you only need to track the basics, it's worth considering.

There is a free trial version available for Health& to let you try before you buy. The full version will run you $.99 and you can grab it here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.
