WindowsBreak: Free Interop-unlock for your Samsung device

Unlocked Phone

Over on XDA, Jaxbot has just detailed a project that he has been working on.

Basically he has managed to unlock his out-the-box Focus with nothing more than a pair of pliers (yes, I'm paraphrasing).

Now, let's take a step back. What I did was interop unlock my Samsung Focus, without using Chevron Labs, AppHub, etc. Not that I'm cheap, but it's the principle here that counts. Unfortunately, there's a catch: the exploit, while working for every device, requires further provisioning. Samsung devices can do this using the diagnostics application. Other devices have some opposition to that.

Hit the break to see how this all works.

So how does it work?

First, on your Samsung device you navigate to this website where you will be greeted with this:

The main page

Once there it downloads a ZIP archive to your phone, and you "install" the hack from that:

I'm so quick, my girlfriend calls me Zippy.

To do this - entirely through the browser - he actually found a pretty nifty way to make the OS change some registry entries, and hence, enabling the unlock. He also notes that although this is only for Samsung devices at the moment, he is working on getting it working across the board.  Remember as with any measure that modifies your Windows Phone, you do so at your own risk.

Checkout the XDA link below to find out more about the nitty-gritty details.

Worked on my phone. Awesome! I have a developer account, but for some reason I am having problems unlocking my phone again. This worked great!

Didn't seem to work for me. I open the XML file then went to diagnostic page entered that number and there were only three options, none of them were windowsbreak or whatever.
I'm running Mango on Rogers Focus.

As usual, it is an OEM app that allows the hack.  I also bet they fix the relative path exploit as seen in the contents of the zip file.

Followed the instructions and all seemed to go well. But, shortly after that, I tried to get online and it wouldn't. I tried everything I could think of and a few that I couldn't, to get it to work. Whatever registries this tweak does, it seems to disable your ability to get online using the carrier network. Anything that required internet connection would not work properly. Nothing else seemed to be bothered by the break, though. I'm using the original Focus on AT&T.

I did it on my spanish Omnia 7 with Movistar and now my 3G network is gone and I cant connect to the internet. What should I do?

Ok, i fixed it. I was rebooting the phone instead of reseting it. That fixed it. Im a noob, sorry.

it messes up ur 3g settings.
tip from jaxbot:
"Restart your phone. If that doesn't work, windowbreak again and try again, or deploy Samsung 3G repair from Heathcliff: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=776605&d=1320794157"
and additional tip from heathcliff:
"If you have a 2nd gen samsung the Repair3G.xap will not work. In that case download the Wireless Manager from the Samsung Zone in the marketplace. Select a different operator and then select your own operator. You'll have your 3G back."

on page 4 of the mentioned xda developer thread. posts #35 and #36

I haven't had any 3G/Internet issues at all. In fact, I've had no issues whatsoever. Works fantastically. That sucks people are having these problems, though.

Doesn't work for me, do you guys recomend reseting the phone first then try again?.
Using a Samsung Focus.
Edit.... Got it :D

It appears to have worked for me. Pardon my ignorance, but what do I need to install on my PC to confirm and to take advantage of this?

worked for my FOCUS, and then imediatley  deployed the mobile hotspot xda and TADA !!!
Thanks so much !
i am one happy mobile camper now : - )
