What you need to know

  • Baldur's Gate 3, the hugely anticipated follow-up to a beloved D&D series, was set to release in Early Access on September 30, 2020.
  • On Twitter today, Larian Studios, the company tasked with creating this ambitious game, announced that the Early Access has been delayed by a week.
  • The decision comes from a "few unexpected delays," likely referring to some bugs or crashes in the release candidate build.
  • If everything goes well, Baldur's Gate 3 Early Access will release on October 6, 2020 instead.

Baldur's Gate III, henceforth referred to as Baldur's Gate 3, is the sequel to a beloved RPG series set in the D&D universe, and is being built by Larian Studios, the company responsible for such masterpieces as Divinity: Original Sin 2. The game's early access was set to release September 30, 2020, but a recent post on the official Twitter account (appropriately renamed "Baldur's Late") announced a saddening delay. Fortunately, the delay is only for a week, at least right now, so players don't have to wait too much longer to get their hands on this long-awaited game.

Our guiding principle for early access is that it's fine for there to be smaller bugs or a few things that are lacking polish, but it needs to offer a fun gameplay experience with as few crashes as possible.

According to Larian Studios, the early access is being delayed simply because the build they were testing didn't make the cut, and a few unexpected delays led to the decision to delay. The studio is confident that the week will be more than enough, however, so Baldur's Gate 3 should be out in early access on October 6, 2020, as long as the team runs into no further issues or crashes.

When Baldur's Gate 3 does arrive, the game is coming to Google Stadia, Steam, and GOG.com, so players will have some choice on where they can play the game.

Are you upset by the delay, or are you happy to wait another week if it means a better gaming experience? Where are you going to play Baldur's Gate 3? Let us know in the comments below!
