The classic Quake games share a lot in common with DOOM, developed by id Software and famed for their fast-paced, frenetic arena gameplay.

Quake co-designer Tim Willetts took to the stage to reveal the game, praising the franchise for setting standards in online multiplayer. Willetts says that Quake Champions will be accessible to new players, but will also feature "world class" eSports gameplay, suitable to 20-year veterans of the classic Quake games.

"The fast, skill-based arena-style competition that turned the original Quake games into multiplayer legends is making a triumphant return with Quake Champions. Running at an impressive 120hz with unlocked framerates, id Software's new multiplayer shooter is getting ready to take PC gaming by storm once more."

"Quake Champions features a roster of unique characters, each with their own distinctive abilities, allowing you to fight the way you want."

This new Quake looks a little less like DOOM's classic arena gameplay and a little more like Overwatch or Lawbreakers, in the sense that it features character classes with unique abilities.

Bethesda will reveal more about Quake Champions at Quakecon in August, so stay tuned!
