Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare achieves native 4K resolution on Xbox One X

Recently, Infinity Ward released an Xbox One X patch which upgraded the visuals for Microsoft's new console to native 4K. Even though the title employs a dynamic scaling solution to maintain 60 FPS, the game still looks sharper on the Xbox One X than its closest console rival, the PS4 Pro.

You may remember Digital Foundry's PlayStation 4 Pro analysis a year ago. They said that the PlayStation 4 Pro version ran at checkerboarded 4K resolution. While this improved image quality over the standard PlayStation 4, it still wasn't a true 4K experience. Luckily, the Xbox One X version removes the checkerboarding so that the game looks sharper. Apart from that, the title has received other upgrades like better draw distances and depth of field effects.

However, it's not all great news. It appears that the patch needs more work because there are some frame rate drops during high-action areas. Infinity Ward need to go back to the Xbox One X version and fix these problems. Employing a more aggressive dynamic scaler appears to be the solution here.

Despite the minor issues, it's great to see developers going back to upgrade even old titles like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare for the Xbox One X. It's even better that they're taking advantage of the 1.8 teraflops advantage the console has over Sony's machine by removing checkerboarding. Hopefully this trend will continue in the future.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare explores a sci-fi large-scale war with epic battles, and cinematic, immersive military storytelling and takes players on a journey from Earth to beyond our atmosphere. Be sure to check out the game at retailers as many are running Black Friday and Cyber Monday discounts at the moment.
