It's Amazon Prime Day week, and to celebrate, Best Buy is doing its own big sales event that attempt to undercut whatever Amazon is doing. That starts with this Surface Pro 12-inch deal, which bundles the keyboard for less than what you'd normally pay for the tablet alone!

Usually, the Surface Pro 12-inch is $799, but this Best Buy deal brings the Surface Pro 12-inch with its keyboard down to $749. The keyboard is usually $149, which means you're saving $200 if you go for this bundle. If you don't want the keyboard, Best Buy is also selling the Surface Pro 12-inch on its own for just $699.

Microsoft's Surface Pro 12-inch was unveiled earlier this year, and is powered by Qualcomm's excellent Snapdragon X Plus, paired with 16GB RAM and 256GB UFS storage. It's the company's first 12-inch 2-in-1, complete with uniform display bezels, a 90Hz touchscreen, and built-in kickstand.

It's the first Surface Pro to also include built-in wireless charging for the Surface Slim Pen accessory, which Microsoft sells separately. If you intend to use your Surface Pro to draw or write things down on, the Surface Slim Pen is definitely something to look into.

Of course, the Surface Pro 12-inch also has its own keyboard, which you can get bundled with the device right now from Best Buy. This keyboard is great, featuring a soft-touch plastic around the keys and palm rest giving it a high quality feel. It features a large touchpad and premium typing experience, and doubles up as a screen cover too.

$749 for both the Surface Pro 12-inch tablet and keyboard is a deal you shouldn't pass up frankly. At that price the keyboard is basically free and Best Buy is still giving you $50 off the price of a Surface Pro 12-inch on its own. Its a win-win!

For the best part of a decade, Windows 10 stood as the world's most popular operating system, at least until Windows 11 surpassed its traffic earlier this year. Ten years is a relatively standard time span for OS support, but this end-of-life scenario is particularly unique, given how many PCs might not meet Microsoft's minimum requirements for an upgrade.

This page will be updated as frequently as necessary, leading up to the cutoff date on October 14, 2025, and in the following days where appropriate. Changes to Microsoft's policies aren't expected, and the ESU program will likely remain as the best option for those who would prefer to stay on Windows 10.

As headsets go, few people have tested as many as I have. I've recommended Xbox and PC gaming headphones to hundreds of people over the past decade, and typically have a handful of "go to" recommendations for different price points and use cases.

There are ultra-high end headsets that cost hundreds of dollars, and then cheap and affordable options on the low-end. I feel like you don't need to (and shouldn't need to) spend the price of an actual Xbox console to get a decent sound experience, and apparently, neither does Turtle Beach.

Since last year, my go-to recommendation for "most" people has been the Turtle Beach Stealth 700 (Gen 3) headset, which I reviewed and updated a short while ago. This is a headset that punches well above its weight in terms of audio quality, while also offering a truly uncompromised feature set for all modern gaming scenarios. A fantastic Xbox and PC gaming headset for virtually everyone

Above all, I think what defines the Turtle Beach Stealth 700 (Gen 3) is versatility. This is a headset that can literally connect to every device you have at home. Even though it's "designed for Xbox," the product contains multiple USB wireless transmitters in the box, allowing you to connect via 2.4 GHz to PCs, PlayStation consoles, Xbox One, and of course, Xbox Series X|S.

It doesn't stop there, either. This headset also comes armed with Bluetooth 5.2, which can be used simultaneously with the 2.4 GHz signals for combining mobile calls with your game audio. It's good for content creators, because you can feed Xbox game sound from your TV via Bluetooth while using the PC signal via USB for Discord calls and streaming and the like.

Their design also makes them a good option for using out and about. The flip-to-mute mic also hides neatly within the cans, making them a decent headset for going fully portable. They isolate sound in the headset well and aren't super leaky, at least at lower volumes, although they don't have full noise cancelling or anything like that.

What they do have is truly absurd, 80 hours of gameplay battery life. In my testing, I found that it even likely exceeds this, which is an impressive feat.

The Turtle Beach headsets have long held a tradition for comfort, with thick cushions and airy, silky materials that are great on sensitive skin. The headset is endowed with metal accents and reinforcements, which should give it some serious longevity through moderate abuse.

But what about sound quality? Turtle Beach really delivers here. The cavernous 60mm speakers paint a vast soundscape that really aids with both immersion and tactical positional awareness. The headset leverages Turtle Beach's "superhuman" hearing features to emphasize directional tactical sounds, such as footsteps, but you can also turn that off to enjoy something more "realistic" and cinematic.

They're great for music too, with sweeping bass notes and good balance, with impressive separation. I'm loathe to admit how much ASMR I listened to while "testing" this headset, owing to their immersive proficiencies.

They were already a steal at $199 in my view, but at $165 it's hard of me to assume you'll find a better gaming headset deal for this summer's Prime Week. Simply fantastic. They well and truly are the best gaming headset for "most" people right now, without hitting more absurd price points.

So if you're looking for a high-quality headset that's compatible with both PC and Xbox Series X|S, then you're better off with products like the HyperX Cloud MIX 2 or the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro. What's even better is that both of these normally highly expensive headsets are on sale right now for $144.79 at Amazon and $149.99 at Amazon respectively.

If you can look past these flaws and only plan on using headsets for PC gaming, then the Corsair Void V2 Wireless is a great purchase for those looking for a budget gaming headset, especially now that it's on sale for Amazon Prime Day.

That game is Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, the 2015 prequel to 2014's The New Order that brought the beloved Wolfenstein series — one of the first and most influential shooter franchises — into the modern age. While it retails for $20 normally, it's available to play forever for free on Prime Gaming from now until April 21, 2025 (a full month at the time of writing) for those subscribed to Amazon Prime.

I never ended up playing The Old Blood — I was mainly getting my shooter fix from Halo, Battlefield, and Team Fortress 2 back in 2015 — but I did eventually check out The New Order, and had an absolute blast with MachineGames' reboot. In hindsight, I really should have kept going with The Old Blood, but at least now I can thanks to this offer. If the game is as fun as The New Order, I'll probably get around to trying Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, too (I haven't heard the best things about the 2019 co-op focused Youngblood, though).

For the unaware, Wolfenstein is set in an alternate reality in which Nazi Germany, bolstered by futuristic technological advancements, ended up defeating the Allies in World War II and established a worldwide empire. The New Order follows protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz as he rebels against the regime in 1960, but The Old Blood takes place at the end of the war in 1946 and shows what happens before the Allies' ultimate downfall.

Like most of the other Wolfenstein games, The Old Blood has accrued countless positive reviews over the years, with fans lauding its intense shooter combat, stealth mechanics, and its gritty dieselpunk style that's become iconic at this point. Reviewers and players alike are generally more critical of the story and narrative, but most agree that it's at least serviceable and is an effective vehicle for the action-packed 6-8 hour adventure it sends you on.

All in all, it's a great game to nab for free if you have Amazon Prime, and arguably one of the best Xbox games and best PC games for FPS fans. Some other noteworthy games being offered right now include Mortal Shell, Mafia II: Definitive Edition, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, BioShock 2 Remastered, The Talos Principle, and others, so be sure to have a look through Prime Gaming's list.

You may have heard of Secret Level, Amazon's new gaming-focused TV series that launched today on Prime Video, perhaps because it will feature the ill-fated Concord.

But in happier news, to celebrate the launch of the series, Prime Gaming is giving away a slate of related titles right now, and they're definitely worth getting your hands on.

Some big names are featured, including Baldur's Gate (but not the latest release so don't get too excited), along with The Outer Worlds, and a selection of title's from the Warhammer universe.

The world of the Wasteland is getting a tiny bit larger.

Macaulay Culkin is joining the cast of the Fallout TV series as a recurring character, according to a report from Deadline on Thursday. Culkin's character isn't named but is described as being the "crazy genius-type" sort.

Culkin was best known for his role as Kevin McCallister in Home Alone and Home Alone 2 before temporarily retiring from acting in 1994. More recently, he's appeared in shows like American Horror Story and The Righteous Gemstones.

Culkin adds weight to an already-impressive cast

Culkin is joining a strong returning cast. The first season of the Fallout TV series saw Ella Purnell taking up the role of Vault Dweller Lucy MacLean, while Walton Goggins plays the gunslinger survivalist known as The Ghoul.

Rounding out the cast is Aaron Moten as Brotherhood of Steel squire Maximus, while Kyle MacLachlan plays Lucy's father, Vault Overseer Hank MacLean. All four are expected to return for the second season of the series. The series is produced by Kilter Films and Amazon MGM Studios in partnership with game developer Bethesda Game Studios and publisher Bethesda Softworks.

The Fallout TV series, which is available through streaming exclusively via Amazon Prime Video, rapidly garnered acclaim and viewership, quickly becoming one of the top-viewed shows on the service, winning two Emmys, and reaching over 100 million viewers as of October 2024. The series' popularity extended over into the games, resulting in a massive resurgence in players and sales across every single Fallout game.

It's not currently known when the second season of the series will arrive, though it is notable that the series used large amounts of practical props instead of CGI, meaning it's possible we could see it arrive earlier than the usual every-other-year cadence seen in special effects-heavy shows.

In my review of the Fallout TV series' first season, I wrote that "It's the small things that end up mattering the most, and everything here just feels comfortably Fallout, from the set dressing to that uncomfortable first moment where someone gives in to drinking irradiated water. Almost everything on screen showed me that Nolan, Robertson-Dworet, Wagner, and everyone else involved in the creation of this series just get it."

A report is bearing fruit three years later.

Electronic Arts and BioWare are partnering with Amazon MGM Studios on a Mass Effect TV series. That's according to a report from Variety, which fittingly dropped on November 7, or N7 Day. The report also reveals that Michael Gamble, creative director on the next Mass Effect game, is attached to the TV series as an executive producer. This comes almost three years after a report from Deadline initially indicated that Amazon was close to a deal for a Mass Effect TV series.

Reportedly attached as writer is Daniel Casey, who has worked on the Fast and Furious franchise, as well as helping with rewrites of 10 Cloverfield Lane. Avi Arad and Karim Zreik, who have both worked on numerous Marvel films and shows, are also reportedly involved as executive producers on the series.

Outside of this, there's little known about the plot or how the series will adapt the games. Mass Effect is a role-playing game series, with the first three games putting players in the boots of Commander Shepard as decisions ripple across the games, while Mass Effect: Andromeda told a separate story in the titular galaxy. BioWare is currently working on a fifth Mass Effect game, though little is known right now.

Amazon continues to invest in game adaptions for TV

Amazon previously partnered with Bethesda Game Studios and Kilter Films on the Fallout TV series, which arrived earlier in 2024 to critical acclaim and commercial success, winning two Emmys and reaching over 100 million viewers. A second season is currently in production.

Amazon is also currently working with PlayStation Productions and Sony Santa Monica on a God of War TV series, with Santa Monica's Cory Barlog and Yumi Yang attached as executive producers.

I'm very curious how this Mass Effect show ends up working, considering that the focus on making player decisions matter and carry forward is such a big part of why those games resonated with myself and others.

In particular, I hope it doesn't make the mistake of trying to present a "canon" journey ahead of the fifth game, meaning what we did doesn't end up mattering. It's fine if this series ends up being one version of events, but I'm hopeful that the fifth game can be a reset, instead of something that ends up cutting off prior branches.

Amazon Prime membership tiers and costs

You can subscribe to Amazon Prime for free with a 30-day trial, but depending on your perspective, there are up to four different tiers, depending on your perspective. Fortunately, all four tiers are almost identical in terms of benefits and only differ in terms of cost and eligibility.

First, you have Amazon Prime for $14.99/month, the standard tier that includes all the benefits listed in the above section. Everyone also gets a 30-day trial to test the waters with Amazon Prime. There's also Amazon Prime Annual for $139/year, which saves you around $41 a year versus paying for the monthly subscription.

Next, you have Amazon Prime for Young Adults for $7.49/month. Half-price sounds excellent, but this tier of Amazon Prime is exclusive to adults between the ages of 18-24 and students that can prove their school enrollment. The benefits are identical to Amazon Prime, but students and young adults also get exclusive perks such as 10% off flights and hotels with Student Universe, a 3-month trial for Calm (soothing sounds to help you study) followed by a heavily discounted $8.99/year subscription (down from $69.99/year), a 1-month trial for homework and tutoring help from Course Hero, and $5 off your first purchase from Amazon Warehouse.

Finally, there's Amazon Prime Access for $6.99/month, exclusive to income-verified customers on government assistance such as Medicaid, SNAP (food stamps), SSI (Social Security income), and more. To enroll, you'll have to prove your assisted income by submitting the relevant documents, but in all other ways, this tier is identical to Amazon Prime and boasts all the same benefits.

Of course, some optional add-ons can be attached to your Amazon Prime subscription. Amazon Prime Video Channels add-ons give you expanded access to more movies and TV shows, with the cost dependent on the channel you add. Unlimited free grocery deliveries through Amazon cost $9.99/month. An upgraded Amazon Music Unlimited subscription with unrestricted music listening costs $9.99/month. RxPass for more affordable prescriptions and prescription deliveries costs $5/month, and One Medical for everyday live medical support costs $9/month for you and $6/month for each additional family member after that.

Amazon Prime Day and exclusive deals

One of the single biggest selling points for an Amazon Prime membership is exclusive access to the best Amazon Prime Day deals. For the uninitiated, Amazon Prime Day is an annual (or bi-annual) two-day sales event during which Amazon discounts hundreds of thousands of items across its catalog.

Many of these discounts are available to all Amazon shoppers, but the most aggressive price cuts require an Amazon Prime membership. Prime members also get 30-minute early access to Amazon's Lightning Deals, which are incredibly steep discounts on specific products that only last a few hours. You can check out our Amazon Prime Day FAQ for more information. Amazon Prime Day historically happens in mid-July and (sometimes) returns in mid-October. While Prime Day does focus on Amazon (and your Prime membership benefits), many other retailers like Best Buy and Walmart usually participate in "anti-Prime Day" events during which they also host their own storewide sales, often even price matching with Amazon.

Finally, Amazon has its newer "Big Deal Days" events that happen occasionally, and while these events don't share a name with Prime Day and tend to focus a little more on non-Prime exclusive deals, Amazon Prime members still get the best prices and shipping options. You can also consider the Black Friday to Cyber Monday weekend another Amazon Prime Day, as Amazon once again offers exclusive deals and discounts to Prime members on top of the usual sales spread. How to sign up for an Amazon Prime membership

This probably won't be surprising, but Amazon makes it very easy to sign up for a Prime subscription. After all, Amazon Prime is a massive source of revenue for the company, so it makes sense that Amazon would take every opportunity to remind you of its benefits, including any time you purchase an item that could benefit from an exclusive Prime discount or fast and free shipping.

If you're interested in signing up, you first have to sign into your Amazon account on Amazon.com. If you don't already have an account, you can create your free Amazon account on Amazon.com with your name, email address, or phone number, and a secure password (you can set up two-factor authentication later for added security). Next, you can head to your Amazon account homepage on Amazon.com to access all of your account settings, where you can add your preferred address, a default payment option (which you'll need to sign up for Amazon Prime), and more.

Once you're signed in or your new account is set up the way you want, you can sign up for Amazon Prime on Amazon.com, starting with your free 30-day trial (if you haven't already used it). You'll still need a default payment option even for the 30-day trial, but you can cancel at any time to avoid that first monthly or annual charge (depending on the tier you choose).

If you're a student between the ages of 18 and 24 or are receiving some kind of income-verified assistance, you may be able to massively lower the cost of your Amazon Prime membership. Check the section on all the tiers and the eligibility requirements above.

How to cancel your Amazon Prime membership

You may be worried (rightfully so, considering some companies) that Amazon may make it frustratingly difficult to cancel your Amazon Prime membership once you sign up, but the cancellation process is, fortunately, quite simple.

Once again, be sure to sign into your Amazon account on Amazon.com. From here, you can head to your Amazon account homepage on Amazon.com and find the "Prime" section (it should be the tile in the uppermost right-hand corner). Next, find the "Update, cancel, and more" button and follow the on-screen instructions to cancel your Amazon Prime membership. You can also skip some steps and immediately cancel your Amazon Prime membership on Amazon.com with Amazon's helpful support link. You should have to confirm your intent to unsubscribe three times before your Prime membership is properly canceled.

There are some exceptions here. If you get your Amazon Prime membership through another company's service (for example, your cellular network provider), you may have to contact that company to handle the cancellation of your Prime subscription. If you signed up for Amazon Prime on your Android device through the Amazon mobile app, Amazon Prime Video mobile app, or Google Play Store, you must cancel your subscription through the Google Play Store's built-in subscription management services.

Finally, you may be curious about refunds. If you haven't used any of your Amazon Prime member benefits, you should be eligible for a full refund of your current membership period. However, active Prime members who have canceled their subscription will instead retain all their benefits until the end of the current membership period. At that point, Amazon will not charge you for the next period, and your membership will officially end.

Why you should consider the Logitech G Cloud

The nuclear Wasteland continues to put up impressive numbers. 

The Fallout TV series has crossed 100 million viewers, as shared by the official Fallout on Prime Twitter (X) account on Wednesday. This comes just weeks after the series —produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Bethesda Game Studios, and Kilter Films, and based on the game franchise of the same name that's helmed by Bethesda — won a couple of Emmy awards, though it and other nominees were largely locked out by the well-lauded Hulu series Shogun.

Fallout first arrived exclusively on Prime Video earlier this year on April 10, where it quickly became one of the top three shows watched on Amazon's subscription service. A second season of the series is in production, though there's not currently a release date or a release window to expect.

In my review of the first season of Fallout, I wrote that "Fallout represents some of the best of what game-to-TV adaptions can offer, carrying forward the look, action, and ideas of the iconic franchise while providing multiple viewpoints in a season that'll leave fans and newcomers alike wanting more."

The Fallout franchise continues to grow

While players and show watchers continue to wait for the second season and Fallout 5, there's still things happening in the world of Fallout games.

Fallout 76 in particular is continuing to get new updates and free expansions like the recent Milepost Zero addition, which allows players to escort caravans and keep them safe in exchange for special rewards. Bethesda Game Studios is also finally adding in support for four-legged friends, with a recent announcement that players will get to add dogs and cats to their camps at some point later this year. 

Meanwhile, players will also be able to start roleplaying as Ghouls when the option to play as an irradiated mutant arrives in Fallout 76 sometime in early 2025.

Fallout 76 is currently available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4. Like other Xbox first-party games, it's also included in Xbox Game Pass.

When it comes to modern gaming handhelds designed to play PC games on the go, people usually flock to Valve's Steam Deck or ASUS' ROG Ally. However, in recent times, Lenovo has stepped into the ring to challenge these handhelds supremacy over the market with the Lenovo Legion Go.

Why buy the Lenovo Legion Go?

When Lenovo released the Lenovo Legion Go last year 2023, it rocked the gaming handheld market for its powerful built-in hardware that rivalled, and in some ways, surpassed some of the best gaming handhelds out there like the ASUS ROG Ally or the Steam Deck. Even our own portable gaming handheld expert, Rebecca Spears, held it in high regard during her review of the Lenovo Legion Go by saying, "Its mixture of familiar and unique features all work together to make it the most versatile entertainment machine of them all". It's also the preferred gaming handheld of our managing editor Jez Corden, who re-reviewed the Lenovo Legion Go over here. 

So what makes it Lenovo Legion Go worth buying? Well, let's start by highlighting its advanced tech such as its Z1E processor, which allows it to run somewhat high-end PC games such as Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077 with higher framerates at more stable levels than that of the Steam Deck. While the ASUS ROG Ally has a Z1E processor as well, the Lenovo Legion Go offers a very large 8.8" display screen, which can be better for games that don't have UIs befitting of a smaller display. 

Other standout features include a kickstand so you can have the Lenovo Legion Go stood upright like a laptop (and function like one so you can watch online shows hands-free), detachable controllers with responsive inputs and Hall Effect joysticks to prevent drifting, and a long battery life of 3-4 hours of use while playing less graphically demanding indie games such as Hollow Knight or Sea of Stars on the go without being charged. 

On top of all that, the Legion Lenovo Go can be upgraded in a variety of ways thanks to its large line-up of the Lenovo Legion Go accessories and Lenovo Legion Go Power Banks so it will last longer or hold more data storage space. 

On the downside, the Lenovo Legion Go is not as technically advanced as the best gaming laptops dedicated to running graphically demanding games like Capcom's upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds or be comfortable to hold for users with tiny hands to due its bulky frame and wide button placement. Even well-optimized, less-intensive past-gen 3D games can tank the battery life quite rapidly, if you don't have access to a power outlet. These kinds of devices need some kind of battery breakthrough to realize their full potential, but for playing indie games, 2D games, retro games, or even well-optimized 3D games, the Lenovo Legion Go and its Z1E siblings are an incredible travel buddy. 

Nonetheless, we still highly recommend the Lenovo Legion Go for any PC gaming enthusiast looking to play the best PC games while traveling or visiting friends with the best resolutions possible on a gaming handheld, especially with this 10% discount deal happening right now over at Best Buy.

This Best Buy deal has reduced the MSRP of the Lenovo Legion Go from $749.99 to $649.99, making it $100 cheaper and more affordable to purchase right now than its competitor with similar hardware specs, the ASUS ROG Ally.

Awards season is in full flow, and this past weekend's Creative Arts Emmys have delivered the first wins for Amazon Prime's magnificent Fallout TV show. 

The Creative Arts Emmys took place ahead of the 'main' ceremony, which is set for September 15, where some of the biggest awards will be handed out. But Fallout is now officially a winner of two Emmy Awards, for Outstanding Emerging Media Program and Outstanding Music Supervision.

I'll admit, I'm not much of an Emmy's buff, so I did have to look up just exactly what Outstanding Emerging Media Program is awarded for. When I did, it made a whole lot of sense. 

"Awarded to producer(s), company(s), and/or individual(s) responsible for the creation of emerging media programming related to an existing linear television program or series or one that is entirely original. The award recognizes content that is central and fundamental to the work itself and demonstrates creative excellence, elevating the audience's viewing experience beyond traditional linear programming." 

I mean, they deserved to win that based on the whole calling the telephone number from the show bit, or what happens if you texted that number instead. The behind the scenes content is pretty fantastic as well. When you see how it all came together, it blows the mind just a little more. 

So, congrats to everyone involved in Fallout on the wins, but it doesn't end there. There are still more Emmys up for grabs, including nominations in a couple of pretty big categories. Fallout is nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, and Walton Goggins is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his incredible performance as The Ghoul.

The Fallout TV series helped breathe new life into the franchise

The launch of the Fallout TV series has helped propel new interest in the games, with every Fallout game seeing a surge in player count shortly after the series arrived. The series was critically acclaimed, with praise for the attention to deal in practically every aspect.

This growth has helped propel Fallout to become one of the most important franchises for Bethesda Softworks and for the entire Xbox organization. At first glance, you may worry about the screen of the Legion Pro 7i being an LCD screen, but our Zachary Boddy complimented the display in their Legion Pro 7i review:

"The display on the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i (Gen 8) isn't as spectacular as the miniLED offering on the far more expensive Legion 9i, but it's still one of the best displays I've had the pleasure of using in a gaming laptop. Detail is retained, colors are vivid, and there's no ghosting or screen tearing anywhere to be found."

That screen has a QHD+ resolution, a 240Hz refresh rate, a 1,400:1 contrast ratio, and 100% sRGB color gamut. It also supports NVIDIA G-Sync and Dolby Vision.

Performance of the Legion Pro 7i also impressed Boddy. "Surprise, surprise, the Legion Pro 7i (Gen 9) is an exceptional performer. As you'd hope, it's more powerful than last year's model," they said. "Except the gap is even greater than I expected. Equipped with an Intel Core i9-14900HX, up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090, 32GB of DDR5 RAM, and 2TB of SSD storage, this laptop is a beast through and through. Lenovo's thermal management continues to excel at keeping the laptop cool, too, even if the fans are still as loud as ever."

In what should be no surprise after reading the above, the Legion Pro 7i can handle demanding PC games at high settings. Boddy was able to run all their games at the highest settings they wanted. "Games just worked, and even long play sessions never resulted in slowdown or noticeable dips in performance," said Boddy. "This is a monster of a gaming laptop."

While many subscriptions provide good value, having one means you have to pay each month to use your needed programs or enjoy content. In my colleague Ben Wilson's SteelSeries Apex Pro Mini review, he specifically lauded the mechanical keyboard's fast response times and called it "practically perfect for fast-paced gaming." This is helped by the mechanical keyboard's ability to adjust between a shallow 0.2mm and a deeper 3.8mm actuation point, so you can specifically customize when it registers a button press to better mesh with your playing preferences. 

To be clear, this SteelSeries keyboard uses linear switches, which many people prefer when gaming. That said, if you prefer more of a tactile keyboard, it might not be as satisfying for you to use for long stretches. According to Ben, the switches feel like they are "somewhere between Cherry MX red and silver switches, with a slightly quieter sound than expected."

You can adjust RGB lighting (per-key) and other settings within the SteelSeries GG Engine program. Overall, this software is easy to navigate and makes it possible to create macros, or get the keyboard functioning just the way you want it to. 

Thanks to its 60% form factor, this gaming keyboard is not unlike the mechanical keyboards that pro gamers and competitive players use. This means that is has a more compact shape with keys tucked closer together and no extra buttons or controls available other than the main keys and the function row. That also means that the keyboard fits more easily on desktops without taking up as much space. 

There are two versions of this keyboard, a wired and a wireless version. The wireless version charges up via USB-C and connects to your computer using Bluetooth 5.0 or wireless dongle. Battery life lasts for roughly 40 hours on Bluetooth or 30 hours when connected via wireless, which is plenty long for multiple gaming sessions. Of course, the wired version cannot function without being plugged in, but it is less expensive, which makes it appealing to people on a budget.

Why should you buy Starfield?

Starfield is an open-world, sci-fi RPG developed by Bethesda Softworks, known mainly for creating the popular Elder Scrolls series and spearheading the Fallout franchise since Fallout 3. In this game, you play as a space miner who, one day, discovers a mysterious alien artifact that has warped your mind in unknown ways after making contact with it. 

To uncover this artifact's origins and what it has done to you, you join an organization of intergalactic explorers called the Constellation and explore the galaxy for answers while completing quests, meeting various factions, and fending off space pirates along the way.

When Starfield launched for the general public on September 6, 2023, it amazed long-time fans of Bethesda's RPGs and critics alike. Even our own Jez Corden and Samuel Talbert were immensely impressed when they reviewed Starfield on Xbox, calling it one of Xbox's best games of the past decade.

To say that this game is packed to the brim with content would be a galaxy-sized understatement. Starfield features dozens, if not, hundreds of exceptionally made main story quests and side quests that explore the deep backstories of the worlds you will visit and companions you can recruit into your party.

It also has a fresh, immersive take on realistic science-fiction tropes with weightless movement while under the effects of zero-gravity, worlds with hostile atmospheres that require special suits to survive exploration, and a huge arsenal of futuristic, yet retro "NASApunk" weapons and armor to collect.

Speaking of weapons, Starfield also features one of the combat systems ever made in a Bethesda game. The gunplay is fast-paced and brutal thanks to improved physics (especially when you send enemies flying while fighting under zero gravity), enemy AI is smart and will take advantage of the environment to put you down, and you can customize your character with all kinds of passive and active abilities to add variety to your move-set.

In addition, Starfield has ship combat similar to games like Elite Dangerous or No Man's Sky, where you must engage in space dogfights with enemy vessels with spaceships you have personally built. The ship battles are epic, cinematic spectacles where carefully placed shots and strategic maneuvering can lead to some of the coolest moments in the game.  

That being said, the game isn't entirely perfect. Starfield's opening act has major pacing issues (the story starts too slow and introduces too many game mechanics at once too early), the facial animations on NPCs look extremely dated and jarring, and the game occasionally suffers from graphical and performance bugs.

However, Starfield's well-crafted questlines, fun combat, deep lore, and stunning environments more than make for these shortcomings and are worth the effort of getting past its rough beginning. Not to mention, the game has received significant improvements since its launch like 60FPS support, numerous bug fixes, and allowing players to mod the game however they desire thanks to the addition of the Starfield Creation Kit.

Plus, Starfield is getting a huge DLC expansion sometime during Fall 2024 called Shattered Spaces that will add more content to the game and a new story where players must explore an ancient alien city on an uncharted world and fight cosmic horrors.

Why is the Xbox controller so popular?

The Xbox Series S|X controller is a marked upgrade from its predecessor, and the included share button makes it easier to capture your best gaming moments to share with friends. These controllers come with textured grip on the rear, triggers, and bumpers, making them more comfortable over long gaming sessions. In fact we love this controller so much, it still tops our Best Xbox Controllers list. It's not just us that think it's great either, with Valve recently revealing that the majority of controller users on Steam use the Xbox controller, and not the PlayStation one. Possibly because we are more likely to see the Xbox controller in sales, as it does have less advanced features than the DuoSense. Gaming handhelds make it easier to play your games wherever you want

I've always been a big gaming handheld enthusiast starting back as a child when I first was given a Sega Game Gear for my birthday and my brothers got a Nintendo Game Boy for Christmas. I've owned several gaming handhelds since then. So when Valve announced the Steam Deck a few years back, I immediately ordered one for myself. Since then, I've also gotten my hands on the ROG Ally (Z1 Extreme), ROG Ally X (as seen in my ROG Ally X hands-on preview), and a Legion Go. 

What's great about ROG Ally?

These are all fantastic devices that I can honestly recommend to different people depending on what they're looking for in a gaming handheld. Thankfully, many of these devices are on massive sales right now thanks to Amazon Prime Day.

But which PC gaming handheld do I recommend most during this Amazon Prime Day? They all have their own perks and drawbacks, but my absolute favorite gaming handheld is the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme, followed closely by the Steam Deck. The ROG Ally runs Windows 11, which means it's basically a tiny laptop with controllers attached. I can access any gaming service I want whether that be Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games, Battle.net, Steam, or something else. 

The 7-inch LCD touchscreen isn't as good as an OLED would be, but it's very colorful and offers plenty of crisp detail to help you enjoy your games. Plus, the screen supports VRR (variable refresh rate), can reach a resolution of 1080p, and can reach a peak 120Hz refresh rate. This all works together to provide a very good viewing experience while playing your games. 

I do wish ROG Ally had touchpads like the Steam Deck does, but the joysticks work well overall. The controls are responsive and the device doesn't feel as clunky as some others on this list. I've even connected the ROG Ally to a docking station and then used a wireless keyboard and mouse to use the Ally like a normal laptop. If you have the right ROG Ally accessories, you can do a whole lot with this device.

ROG Ally comes with a program called Armoury Crate installed on it, and this software makes it easy to launch your library of games, check system performance, and adjust settings quickly. One of the buttons on this side of the screen even brings up a quick assistant menu so you can make adjustments to resolution, FPS limits, TDP (thermal design power), and more without having to close your game window. It's very convenient. 

I also love that ASUS ROG has done a fantastic job finding ways to update the handheld with new features. It's helped this gaming handheld become even better than it was when it launched. That said, the ROG Ally isn't perfect. As with most gaming handhelds, battery life only lasts for about an hour and a half on average and can run out even faster depending on settings. Additionally, the Ally only comes with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, so if you'd prefer more space you'll either have to upgrade the ROG Ally SSD or else purchase a microSD card separately.

What's so great about Steam Deck?

So, what do I think about the Steam Deck? The Steam Deck isn't quite as powerful performance-wise as the ROG Ally and the LCD touchscreen doesn't look as good as the ROG Ally's LCD display. However, the Steam Deck LCD does cost less and is easier to navigate for people who solely want to use the Steam Deck as a gaming handheld rather than like a gaming laptop.

For instance, Valve made it so the Steam Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system. People who don't like troubleshooting with Windows 11 really prefer this interface since it feels a lot like navigating through Steam itself. As such, it's easy to find games in your library or purchase new games when shopping at the Steam store. You can also go into the device's desktop mode if you want to use it like a computer or customize the handheld so that it can provide more functions. 

As an example, Steam Deck's desktop mode comes with Mozilla Firefox installed so you can surf the internet, but you can easily install Google Chrome on Steam Deck or other preferred web browsers. Just note that it does take a few more steps to get browsers set up on Steam Deck compared to the process on ROG Ally devices. Another thing Steam Deck has going for it is that it's literally sold by Valve, so Steam games that have been "Verified" to work on Steam Deck are usually very well optimized for the handheld. The same can't always be said for other gaming handheld devices. But the downside is that the Steam Deck only reaches 1280 x 800 resolution and a peak 60Hz refresh rate, so game visuals on 3D games usually look really pixelated and sometimes murky compared to what they'll look like on ROG Ally or Legion Go. Even the Steam Deck OLED only reaches 800p with a 90Hz refresh rate, so while colors look better, details still aren't the best on Steam Deck. 

But if budget and ease of use are the top factors for you when looking for a gaming handheld than the Steam Deck will serve you very well.  

What's so great about Legion Go?

When considering PC gaming handhelds, you really shouldn't overlook the more expensive Lenovo Legion Go. For one thing, the Legion Go is our own Jez Corden's gaming handheld of choice and it's $100 off right now. Outside of that, it is similar to ROG Ally since it also runs Windows 11. However, it's also the most unique of the main PC gaming handhelds on the market today because it takes after the Nintendo Switch in some ways. Plus, it offers the best touchscreen on a gaming handheld so far (with one biggish drawback). 

Rather than the typical 7-inch display, the Legion Go has a massive 8.8-inch IPS touchscreen with 2560 x 1600 resolution and a whopping 144Hz refresh rate, which makes it easier to appreciate game visuals. If it's harder for you to see on smaller screens, then the Legion Go might be a better choice for you. The one drawback here is that Legion Go does not support VRR, so motion clarity isn't as good as on ROG Ally. 

The controllers also detach and the right controller has the ability to go into FPS (first-person shooter) mode, which makes it behave like a mouse. I've used this FPS mode a few times on more mouse-focused games like Manor Lords or Age of Empires. Meanwhile, the Legion Go has a built-in kickstand so I can prop the device up and watch shows or play games that way.

Target first launched its Target Circle program in 2019, but has since improved upon the experience by adding more perks to it. This membership service gives users access to free bonuses, deals, and even cashback rewards for shopping at the retailer. What's more, those who use the Target Circle Card or subscribe for the Target Circle 360 membership gain additional perks. 

We now also have a newer annual event known as Target Circle Week, which is a lot like what Amazon Prime Day is to Prime members. Those with a Target Circle membership get access to additional discounts during the 7-day stretch. How to sign up for Target Circle

1. Download and install the Target app for Android or iOS if you don't already have it on your phone.

What you need to know

• Amazon has finally revealed some actual numbers around how many people have watched Fallout, and it's staggering. 
• Over 65 million people have watched the show, though without saying how it's counting those people. 
• Fallout is now the second most-watched show on Prime Video of all time. 

Well, this one gets a big old okie dokie. Fallout on Amazon Prime Video has been a success, we know that. We've talked about it plenty already, and we've talked about the knock on impact for the entirety of the franchise's games. 

But, Amazon has given us some numbers, now, and hoo boy, it's crazy. As shown off in the post on X below, Fallout has seen over 65 million viewers in its first 16 days on the platform. 

65 million. Yup. 

There is a caveat here, though. Amazon hasn't disclosed how it's actually counting those viewers. Could it be that someone is counted if they watch half an hour, a full episode, the whole season? It's unclear, but regardless, that is a ridiculous number of people. 

Per Variety, Amazon has also now bumped Fallout up from being one of its top three most-watched shows, to its second most-watched show of all time. The same report also says that Fallout is the most-watched show ever in the 18-34 age category, and that a sizeable 60% of the audience is from outside the United States. A special shoutout to the UK, France and Brazil, is in order, too. 

It's of little surprise as we see numbers such as these that Fallout Season 2 was confirmed little more than a week after the show debuted. Having been in the works for so long, to see that not only did Amazon do the franchise justice, but that fans new and old are loving it, well it makes this old guy feel warm inside.

As I've previously written, I think Microsoft and Bethesda have missed a trick by not having something new for the gamers to look forward to. We have at least had the current gen upgrade to Fallout 4 (admittedly not everyone is thrilled by it, though), and for folks new to the franchise, there is a healthy back catalog to play through.

But Fallout fever is here to stay. Roll on, the next installment.

• Following up the huge marketing push from Amazon around the new Fallout show on Prime Video, Fallout 76 can be claimed for free. 
• It's available for both Xbox and PC (Microsoft Store) until May 15. 
• The only catch is that you need an Amazon Prime subscription, but you can claim both versions from the same account. 

If you just can't get enough Fallout, having binged the new Prime Video series, there's good news! The newest game in the franchise, the always online Fallout 76 is currently available for free on Xbox and PC thanks to Amazon Prime Gaming. 

In not unsurprising news, it's the Microsoft Store version of Fallout 76, not Steam, but Prime subscribers can claim both until May 15. 

Here's how.

• Click Claim under the version of Fallout 76 you want to add to your account.

The launch of the show (and you can read our spoiler-free Fallout season 1 review if you haven't seen it yet) has definitely had a positive impact on the games. Even Fallout 76 is over 5 years old at this point, but player counts for it, and previous Fallout games in the franchise have exploded since the launch of the Prime Video series. There's never been a better time to jump in and see what all the fuss is about!

"A little scary, but also exhilarating."

So says Jonathan Nolan, creator of the Fallout TV series on Prime Video, discussing the challenges and surprises that he and the others faced when working on this ambitious adaption of the iconic Fallout game franchise. 

Shortly before the premiere of the series, I had the chance to speak with Nolan, as well as showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner along with cast members Aaron Moten, Ella Purnell, and Michael Emerson to discuss the excitement and challenges faced in bringing this show to life. 

Note: While there are no truly major reveals discussed, I do recommend watching the first couple of episodes of the show before reading this if you want to avoid some light spoilers. All eight episodes are now available on Prime Video, and you can read my review of the Fallout TV series' first season now.

A dark world brimming with comedy

Speaking with Nolan, it's clear straight away that he and the rest of the team understood the need to capture Fallout's sense of humor. The games can be quite dark — much of the world being bombed into a nuclear hellscape is a rough topic — but they can also be extremely funny, if still leaning toward a dark sense of humor.

"The thing that I got to do with this project that I really hadn't gotten the chance to do before was the humor, the comedy," Nolan says. "Working with our showrunners — Geneva, who comes from the world of comic book movies like me, but also Graham, who comes from the world of comedy —  and trying to get that balance right, that antic tone of the games." 

"It gave me the chance to work with more humorous and comic material than I had before, and these incredible comic actors, where you get the chance to put the scene up and play a little bit with it, and find the humor. A little scary, but also really exhilarating."

That's backed up by Robertson-Dworet, who notes that finding the balance between dark humor and making sure the plot moves forward was "key" to the collaboration between her and fellow showrunner Wagner. At any point where restraint might've been possible, the show instead lunges forward. During the opening of the second episode, as scientists perform unethical experiments, we literally see a puppy chucked into a furnace.

"I didn't protest, I just recall being like 'Are we fucking doing this?' and then we're there on set building a beautiful, beautiful puppy replica," Wagner recalls while laughing. "It literally had a heartbeat and could breathe, and then we're just chucking it in the incinerator and I was just like 'I've done some dark shit, that definitely is the darkest.'"

Three leads, one show

While the Fallout games stick to one protagonist that players customize, that's obviously not the case for the show. Instead, while we get a large number of viewpoints, the central narrative revolves around three very different survivors: Vault Dweller Lucy (Ella Purnell), Brotherhood of Steel hopeful Maximus (Aaron Moten), and Cooper Howard, aka The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), an actor from before the bombs fell who has evolved into a deadly gunslinger. 

According to Nolan, these multiple viewpoints were a key benefit of adapting Fallout into a show, with both he and Bethesda Game Studios' Todd Howard particularly excited around telling flashbacks "before the fall" surrounding Cooper Howard, while also maintaining the constant sense of being sidetracked that Bethesda games tend to provide.

"Obviously, with this series we can't give the audience the same open-world interactive experience they have with the games," Nolan says. "They don't get to decide if the Vault Dweller's gonna be good, bad, or somewhere in-between. You have certain advantages in [a] series, where you can have an ensemble form of storytelling, which would be more difficult to do, more challenging to do in a video game. You can have flashbacks, we can see more of that world."

"You lose some things and you gain some things, but it's our hope that we've honored the essence and the spirit of the games," he adds. 

Of the three protagonists, Lucy is the most representative of a player, literally listing off her skills like a player selecting their S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes. Following the massacre of her wedding going awry, Lucy also gets the big moment where she steps out of a Vault and into the Wasteland on a quest. For actress Purnell, Lucy represents the very beginning of a game, while The Ghoul is someone completely at home in the Wasteland."

"That was a really exciting place to be, that this is the player's entrance into the game, this is the audience's entrance into the show," Purnell says. "Something that I was really impressed by is how many ways they managed to adapt the game into the show, and one of those ways is taking The Ghoul, Lucy, and Maximus, these three sort of archetypes, turning them into central characters in the show, and they all [represent] very different places in the games."

"Lucy is the beginning of the game, coming out of the Vault. The Ghoul on the other hand, completely opposite end of the spectrum, he's been around a long time, he is fully evolved, he's adapted...it's really exciting to be starting in a place of complete innocence, and building all of her real life experience from that place."

Meanwhile, actor Moten believes that Maximus isn't exactly sure where he fits in. Raised by the Brotherhood of Steel from a young age, Maximus often seems to find himself conflicted between obeying his superiors and doing something for himself.

"The existence that he's lived in, being born and raised in the Wasteland, it's been a harsh reality for him, and I also think the Brotherhood lifestyle is a harsh reality for Maximus," Moten says. "So I think it's kind of fostered this young guy who's got demons. I think he's got things to work out, and he's being pulled in all these different directions."

"Part of our interesting journey for Maximus in this first series is how to continue to discover who he is — and he's there all along — but in what decisions do we actually see Maximus? Which part of this moment was actually him and where is he pretending to be something that he isn't? There's some mystery to it in a really healthy way that we really liked playing with, and it's a really exciting journey through the Wasteland and all these circumstances that get us all the way through to how these characters change and evolve getting to and through the finale."

Scale and presentation

When I asked actor Michael Emerson — who plays Wilzig, a renegade Enclave scientist that multiple factions are after — about what surprised him the most in being a part of Fallout, he immediately points to the production scale. 

"Scenic design, location. I'd never worked in circumstances like that, that were so chaotic, or grand, or vast. Even the sets built on sound stages were vast," he says. "The Vaults...I mean the throw of some of those must've been 50 or 100 yards, you could walk in a straight line and be in that environment, towering over your head. It was very real. It was an adjustment, you feel like 'Oh, you're bound to make a performance that can live and breathe in a space so great.'"

Despite the impressive budget and scope of the show, it still falls victim to one limitation shared by many other series in recent years — being constrained to just eight episodes. According to Wagner, the challenges and benefits of a shorter series are a "perfectly mixed bag."

"Eight hours of content, of story, to capture the spirit of Fallout, which is a video game franchise that's been going for 25 years, you can spend a thousand hours in a single [game]...it's an incredible challenge, but at the same time, the scope of the production was so great, we went to Utah, Namibia, we were filming in New York, I think we might've died if we tried to do a 24-episode order of a show like this," Wagner says.

"Humanely, it's only eight, but creatively, gosh, it would be great to have more. If we're lucky enough to get a second season, we may be counting our lucky stars that it's only eight so that we can not die."

Bringing everything full circle, I asked Nolan what lone word he would use to describe the arc of this series. For him, there isn't any word that would suffice.

"This is one of the reasons we were so excited to work on this series. When I played Fallout 3 for the first time — which was my first experience with the franchise — it defied one word, it wasn't one word, it was all of these different textures that I had never seen married together before: Dark, emotional, violent, but also funny, satirical, subversive, all these different words," Nolan explains. "I think the joy for me of the franchise is that it doesn't fit into one word."

When I asked Emerson the same question, he has a slightly different, but equally valid answer. "It's epic."

"The Wasteland's got its own golden rule: Thou shalt get sidetracked by bullshit every goddamn time."

So says The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), one of the protagonists in the Fallout TV series, accurately conveying a feeling that every single person who has ever played a Fallout game will inevitably hold at some point or another, realizing in simultaneous joy and despair that the small goal they meant to complete three hours ago has been waylaid by one promising side excursion after another.

Developed and produced by Amazon MGM Studios in partnership with Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks, this series faces the gargantuan task of taking the world of the games and transporting it into an eight-episode season on Prime Video that's geared to be approachable for fans and newcomers alike. Having watched all eight episodes ahead of the series premiere, I'm happy to say it succeeds.

The stellar cast provides numerous entry points of perspective, as the show gives insight into the Brotherhood of Steel, life in the Wasteland, happy-go-lucky-innocent Vault Dwellers, and more. While the limited runtime of the season means a handful of ideas go without being fully explored, this is a fantastic ride through the world of gore and dark humor that is Fallout. Here's my spoiler-free review.

Fallout TV series Season 1: Review

The Fallout series kicks off in the year 2296, where Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell) lives alongside her dad, Overseer Hank MacLean (Kyle MacLachlan) and dozens of others in Vault 33, part of a network that's connected to Vaults 32 and 31. Together, these Vault Dwellers are preparing for a hopeful, bright future where they no longer live underground. Lucy is every bit the Fallout protagonist, even getting to list off her multidisciplinary skill set, with a beaming sense of optimism not yet polluted by the cruelty of this world.

Outside of the Vault, we also follow Maximus (Aaron Moten), a hopeful in the Brotherhood of Steel who is eager to prove himself, but isn't quite sure of exactly who he is. Finally, there's The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), a feared and notorious gunslinger with connections to the old world, a killer who has far more going on than first meets the eye.

Naturally, events conspire that send Lucy hurrying out of the Vault and put these three on the tail of a mysterious scientist (Michael Emerson), as well as being put on a collision course with the dangers of the Wasteland, from raiders and radiation to mutants and mystery. 

Straight away when watching this show, it's made abundantly clear that creator Jonathan Nolan and showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner understand the games they are drawing on. The set design of a Vault or shantytown in the wastes feels directly transported out of the games, while the T-60 power armor used by members of the Brotherhood of Steel looks absolutely amazing in motion.

Similarly, the action feels distinctly grounded in the universe, with no shying away from the copious amounts of gore that can unfold in the games when bullets and bombs start flying. Mutant monsters, ghouls, and humans alike are smashed, impaled, shot, and cannibalized across the series.  

These three viewpoints are well-juxtaposed, providing a traditional Fallout protagonist perspective as well as different sides of life that would usually be reserved for exposition delivered by a player's in-game companion. This includes a lot of fun (if often brutal) side stories, moments where the universe is explored more in ways allow the downright weird parts of the setting to shine, and some of the B-plots here feel exactly like the kind of nonsense someone would run into while trying to accomplish an important goal in one of the games.

Every member of the cast is great, and while Goggins tends to steal the show with his portrayal of ruthless, genre-savvy pragmatism, Purnell and Moten are likewise wonderful to follow, with both selling the moral struggles their characters face in spades.

While most of the series takes place in the apocalyptic far future, we also get some occasional flashbacks to shortly before the bombs fell in 2077. These flashbacks are used sparingly but appropriately, giving key glimpses into the growing dread of American life in the build-up to a nuclear apocalypse. The Fallout franchise has examined ideas in the past like hyper-patriotism, nationalism, and the conflicting goals of what it means to continue (or even restart) society, and that's a thread that's carried through in this series front and center.

Despite its post-apocalyptic setting, Fallout juggles genres, often trading western standouts and bounty hunting for eerie science-fiction dread between scenes. There's variety here, and while I wish some scenes got just a bit longer to linger, it's hard to fault the sheer breadth of ideas covered in the span of this season.

All of this is underlined by a solid score from composer Ramin Djawadi (Gears 5, Game of Thrones, Westworld). Djawadi gives each of the leads their own motif, the wailing cord that signifies the presence of The Ghoul being a particular highlight. Much of the soundtrack is fittingly somber, with Djawadi leaning on Inon Zur's Fallout 4 at key points. There's also a bevy of old-timey licensed tracks, just as you'd expect from something in the Fallout universe.

If this series has one flaw, it's in the eight-episode length, something that Fallout is hardly unique in suffering from. While the very first episode of the season runs for over an hour, the subsequent episodes shave off anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes. Most of the story is allowed to breathe, and it's certainly a testament to the writing team and showrunners that things still flow very well overall, but I'm definitely left wanting more, wishing that some particular ideas or setups could've been explored just a tiny bit more. Even just one more episode (or having the majority of the season's episodes run for a few minutes longer) would've been enough.

Fallout TV series Season 1: Verdict

I was cautiously interested in this series ever since first hearing it would be a thing, and with every trailer or new interview, that interest grew. Now, having watched this first season's outing, I'm just hungry for more, and I'm already scrambling to concoct theories on just what is up next after some big teases in the finale.

There are a near-innumerable number of pain points where this series could've tripped, stumbled, and collapsed inward from the weight of its ambition. Instead, it hits the ground running, delivering an eight-hour story that feels satisfactory (if perhaps just a bit too snug) while still leaving plenty of room for things to grow in a likely second season and beyond. 

It's the small things that end up mattering the most, and everything here just feels comfortably Fallout, from the set dressing to that uncomfortable first moment where someone gives in to drinking irradiated water. Almost everything on screen showed me that Nolan, Robertson-Dworet, Wagner, and everyone else involved in the creation of this series just get it. We might be waiting a long time for a new game, but this is the next chapter of Fallout, and I'm excited to see where it leads in the future.

We've finally got our first trailer for the next big Fallout experience. 

While there's no new games on horizon, the Fallout TV show is on the way, with showrunner Jonathan Nolan (Westworld) collaborating with Bethesda Game Studios executive producer Todd Howard to craft a new tale that's set after the events of Fallout 4. 

Developed by Amazon Prime Video, the show seems to feature the same staples we all know, including clueless Vault Dwellers, irradiated monstrosities, and the Brotherhood of Steel, and the show is scheduled to kick off on April 12, 2024. You can take a look at the first trailer for the show below:

What Fallout games should you play before watching this?

Unlike some other video game properties that have been adapted into movies and TV, this show is set after the events of all the games so far, so it's not going to be one-to-one adaption of a story and characters we already know about. 

As a result, you don't really need to play any Fallout games before watching it if you're just curious and want to have fun. If you do really feel the desire however, the two games I'd most recommend are Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4, both of which can be played on an Xbox Series X|S console through backward compatibility. These two games were developed by Obsidian Entertainment and Bethesda Game Studios, respectively, both of which are now Xbox first-party development teams.

Fallout: New Vegas has an acclaimed story that'll familiarize you with some of the West Coast factions, while Fallout 4 is the most recent single-player Fallout adventure, and will be the best gameplay experience while also letting you know about the Brotherhood of Steel, who seem to feature heavily in the upcoming show. 

An enhanced version of Fallout 4 is on the way and was originally slated to launch at some point in 2023, though it now seems unlikely to be arriving before the end of the year. Leaked documents also indicate Fallout 3 is being remastered, but if true, this is still a ways off.

Analysis: Go ahead and take my bottle caps

Obviously it's just a teaser trailer, and the exact execution could be lacking, but so far this looks great. The team behind the show seems to really understood the tone, not just the aesthetic of Fallout, and it was so great seeing the gore and horrible mutated monsters. I'll definitely be ready and waiting when this show launches next year. Maybe I'll even be done playing Starfield by then and ready to dive into the upgraded version of Fallout 4...

On October 23, 2023, Amazon Prime decided to drop a bombshell of an announcement for Fallout fans by declaring the release date for its upcoming TV show adaptation of Bethesda's Fallout franchise. On X (Twitter), Amazon Prime has stated that it will begin streaming the TV series on April 12, 2024.

Fallout is a series of open-world RPGs set in an alternative timeline where, during the 1950s, the world was ruined by nuclear war and the player has to survive living in a post-apocalyptic world.

During a YouTube interview between the director of Bethesda, Todd Howard (who is also working on the Fallout TV show as an executive producer) with Lex Fridman, Todd says that the Fallout TV show will not be a retelling of any Fallout game like Fallout 3, Fallout 4, or Fallout 76. While we don't know the specific details of the TV show's plot, Amazon Prime has hinted that it will take place in Los Angeles and will involve Vault 33. Vaults in the Fallout universe are shelters people evacuated to in order to escape the nuclear bombings. Some Vaults housed regular people, while others contained horrifying experiments that killed the humans taking shelter inside.

It is a good sign that Amazon has decided to announce the release date for the TV show today, as October 23 is known as 'Fallout Day' by Fallout fans. 'Fallout Day' is the in-game event when the nuclear war that ravaged mankind and Earth in the Fallout games began. So, Amazon acknowledging such a critical event to the franchise shows that they do have some understanding of the series.

Will this show have a chance at being one of the best TV show adaptations of videogames alongside Netflix's Arcane and Castlevania shows? Samsung has achieved these feats without compromising the phone's aesthetic appeal, as it's thinner, lighter, and sleeker.

The crease in the middle while using the phone in tablet mode is subtle. Samsung also promises a great user experience with 1750 nits of brightness on the Fold 5, which makes it easy to use outdoors without compromising on the vibrant and vivid colors displayed on the screen.

Samsung has also heavily invested in the entry's durability, which sports Gorilla Glass Victus 2 external protection and IPX8 water resistance. Unfortunately, the Galaxy Fold 5 doesn't support expandable memory via a microSD card slot, meaning your best bet would be getting one with more storage (up to 1TB). It also runs on Android 13, with a 120Hz refresh rate.

The 4400 mAh battery seems promising and will probably get you through the day on a single charge, depending on your usage. But if you manage to empty the tank, fast charging, Qi wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging to ensure you're covered and connected at all times.

Why I'd go for this deal

Aside from it being a solid phone that supports multitasking, the Fold 6 stacks 5 cameras in total. That's the wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto cameras at the back, then there's the two selfie cameras on the cover and main display. I'm big on photography, so this is a big win.
