After two weekends of Diablo 4 beta, it's fair to say fans old and new have been left hungry for more, and thankfully due to the Server Slam we got a third taste. As a Diablo fan this has been an incredible year so far, and I'm comforted by the sheer volume of buzz on social media for the Diablo universe. Players I'd never have expected to try a Diablo game have been playing and loving Diablo 4, and it's been a joy to behold. Helped greatly I'm sure by the insane marketing campaign Blizzard has put behind this new addition to the series.

I can say with certainty that Diablo 4 does a better job than any of the games that have come before it, at telling a compelling story. Many of the naysayers, "What, Diablo has a story?" voices have been silenced by what was an enthralling Act 1.

You do not need to have played the previous games to enjoy Diablo 4, but the more you know about the world, the richer the experience you will have. Diablo has always had a story, and I'm going to tell it. From the beginning.

Diablo Lore: The Beginning

Tathamet and Anu fought for eons, a battle of true Good and Evil. (Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment)

The very first being in existence in the world of Diablo, was Anu. Anu was all, Anu was only. Following what must have been a millennia of self-reflection, Anu decided to cast out all of the evil forces within him, effectively becoming a being of pure good and light. Pretty cool right? Well, not quite...

The evil forces had to go somewhere, and those components of Anu formed another being by the name of Tathamet, the seven-headed dragon. Anu and Tathamet fought each other for eons, light against dark, day against night until they exasperated their energy into one final killing blow. The deities were destroyed simultaneously creating the Diablo lore universe equivalent of the Big Bang.

From this destruction of the two beings came the creation of other beings and other worlds. What we now know as the Worldstone, is actually the Eye of Anu, the Heart of Creation itself, and the area formed around it Pandemonium. From Anu's spine came the 'Crystal Arch' also known as the foundation of the High Heavens. From the Crystal Arch beings of light and sound are created, Angels to you and I.

Lower Pandemonium became home to a much darker force. Tathamet's severed parts formed what we now know as Hell, and the seven heads of the dragon were split to form the Three Prime Evils, and four Lesser Evils. The Black Abyss in Hell is where all demons are created.

Diablo Lore: The Eternal Conflict

When Demons aren't trying to kill and overthrow eachother, they love fighting Angels.

There is more to the Conflict than simple brawling however, the fight for control over the World Stone. The World Stone being the Eye of Anu at the centre of the Universe which has the ability to shape reality and create worlds and life.

While the Pandemonium Fortress was built to protect the World Stone, possession of the Fortress itself passed between Angels and Demons many times over during the Eternal Conflict. Whilst Angels were in possession of the World Stone they would create worlds of light and perfect order, but these worlds were also stagnant and devoid of life. Demons in possession of it made worlds of chaos and destruction, basically toddlers playrooms for evil. These worlds too were unsustainable.

Regardless the war raged on for an unspecified amount of time, but we figure a long time given the name Eternal. Worlds were endlessly created and destroyed by either side in a bid for control over the Heart of Creation.

Diablo Lore: The Prime Evils and Lesser Evils

Diablo, Mephisto and Baal - The Three Prime Evils (Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment)

Demons do not live by the same rules of order as Angels, they are far more selfish and hungry for power, but they do follow a basic hierarchy most of the time when they aren't infighting. The heads of Tathamet we discussed earlier are now the Great Evils and each rule over their own domain. Generally, these seven Great Evils rule their own area and demon armies, but their are exceptions to this rule and demons that refuse to join any particular faction.

The Three Prime Evils and most powerful demons in Hell are:

Diablo - Lord of Terror

Baal - Lord of Destruction

Mephisto - Lord of Hatred

While it's debatable who is the most powerful of the Three Prime Evils, Diablo is generally held as the most fearsome and unpredictable due to his untethered ambition and abilities of manipulation. Diablo is probably the most chaotic of the three and obsessed with having ultimate rule. As the youngest of the Three, he's a typical trouble-making little brother.

In contrast, Mephisto is the oldest of the Three, and the second being to have been created from the destruction of Anu and Tathamet (Malthael was the first). Mephisto is more rational and strategic, but also the most hateful, which being the Lord of Hatred comes with the territory. Mephisto is the father to Lilith and Lucion.

Baal, the Lord of Destruction is the main antagonist of the Diablo 2 expansion of the same name. There has been conflicting information within the Diablo stories about if Baal or Diablo is the youngest but since the release of The Book of Cain, he is generally regarded as the middle sibling. You may hear the community mention Baal runs regularly as repeatedly killing Baal in Diablo 2 was the best way to level up characters and get loot.

The Lesser Evils are made up of:

Azmodan - Lord of Sin

Belial - Lord of Lies

Andariel - Maiden of Anguish

Duriel - Lord of Pain

Diablo Lore: The High Heavens and the Angiris Council

As we have covered, Angels are birthed from the Crystal Arch and are actually being born from Anu's power, which is finite therefore only a finite amount of angels can exist at any one time. If the High Heavens are at maximum angel capacity, only the death of an angel will return their energy to the Crystal Arch and be used to birth another Angel. There need to be specific conditions for this to happen, and the death of Angel does not mean they themselves will return. The process works more like reincarnation. A new angel will be born that may have some of the aspects of its former self but generally be a new being altogether.

Not all Angels are created equal, some are Archangels with greater power and status in the High Heavens. The five highest of which rule over the domain, The Angiris Council. Each archangel represents a different virtue of Anu.

Imperius - Archangel of Valor and current leader of the council.

Malthael - Archangel of Wisdom and first and oldest of the Angels.

Tyrael - Archangel of Justice

Auriel - Archangel of Hope

Itherael - Archangel of Fate

Malthael, an integral character for Diablo 3, was the original leader of the council and the oldest known being in existence. Malthael was also the first of the Angels to discover and understand the World Stone and it's importance, and the first to notice it had gone missing later in the timeline.

Diablo Lore: Inarius and Lilith and the Creation of Sanctuary

Inarius and Lilith are two very important characters in Diablo lore and the two that newcomers to Diablo 4 will be the most familiar with as they are the focus of the latest game. We know that they are responsible for creating Sanctuary but how did this come to be?

Inarius was a powerful angel who served as an advisor to the Angiris Council, in fact under direct command of Tyrael. After tiring of the Eternal Conflict, he pondered the utter pointlessness of battling with demons for the World Stone and the passing back and forth of power and became disillusioned with the goals of the High Heavens. Being a well behaved angel he fought tirelessly on anyway, until one day he found himself incapacitated in battle and imprisoned by demons.

Inarius used his time in captivity to air his thoughts on the futile nature of the Eternal Conflict to his captors, and fortunately for him he found agreement in a particular demon, Lilith. Lilith was the daughter of Mephisto, also known as Daughter of Hatred and Queen of the Succubi. For a demon, Lilith was pretty hot and Inarius soon found himself utterly infatuated with her. The two fell in love and hatched a plan to rebel against both Angels and Demons and steal the World Stone for themselves thus ending the Eternal Conflict.

After recruiting some other willing volunteers to their cause from both sides of the war, they managed to steal the World Stone and harness its power to conceal themselves and it in a pocket dimension. Within that pocket dimension, Inarius, Lilith, and their followers created the world of Sanctuary. Turns out that combining the elements of order and chaos can create quite a stable world in comparison to each side's previous attempts with the World Stone.

Mount Arreat which you explore in Diablo 2, was the first area to be created and would come to house the World Stone.

Diablo Lore: Nephalem and The Purge

Inarius, Lilith and their followers lived in relative harmony in Sanctuary. In fact with no war to be had, they amused themselves in other way. Specifically copulating and reproducing. The offspring that came of this inter-breeding was known as the Nephalem. The first being the son of Inarius and Lilith, Linarian.

Linarian would later come to be known as Rathma, the first necromancer. Linarian and the other first nephalem are known as The Ancients. There were supposedly tens of thousands of Ancients at some point in the history of Sanctuary, who all spread across this new world in their efforts to discover and understand it.

Just as Sanctuary had been the only successfully stable world made using the World Stone using the efforts of both Angels and Demons, it seems the combination of these two species also spawned a much more powerful and stronger offspring in the Nephalem.

What was at first viewed a blessing by our unlikely couples, quickly became a concern. The Nephalem were far more powerful than anything that had come before, and some were concerned of what this mean for angels and demons. Could the Nephalem become a threat? Could they make either Heaven or Hell aware of the existence of Sanctuary and put this relative paradise in danger?

The concerns over the perceived threat of the Nephalems power caused much fighting between Lilith and Inarius and their band of runaways. Inarius took some time away to contemplate the potential destruction of these children.

Lilith, seeing the potential in the Nephalem's power wanted to use it to her advantage to end the Eternal Conflict once and for all, by using them to destroy Heaven and Hell leaving her as the ruler over all creation. Sensing the impending slaughter of these offspring she struck first by weilding a total bloodbath over Sanctuary. Lilith made quick work of murdering all of the other Angels and Demons whilst Inarius was still contemplating his final move.

Returning to find that his love had seemingly gone insane and wiped out all of their followers, Inarius still did not have the heart to kill her. Using the World Stone Inarious banished Lilith to the Void, an area that sits outside of the known Universe never to return. Let's see how that turns out.

Inarius ultimately decides that all of this bloodshed was not the fault of the Nephalem, and they should be allowed to live, however only under his control. Wielding the powers of the World Stone once again, he supresses the powers of the Nephalem. As generations of Nephalem are born and die, eventually all their power is lost and we are left with much less impressive humans.

Diablo Lore: The Cathedral of Light and The Triune

Following an unspecified amount of time, and humans having no memory of their ancestors' history or power, humans still found a way to get themselves into trouble.

The World Stone was missing from Pandemonium, and the disappearance of some key characters had not gone unnoticed by the High Heavens or the Burning Hells, most pointedly the Prime Evils. With Sanctuary being concealed and them having no knowledge of its existence they didn't have many avenues of investigation.

Some humans were still capable of practicing magic, not at their previous levels of proficiency but enough for a clan of mages in Kehjistan to accidentally summon a demon. The Vizjerei Clan responsible for this monumental mess-up are mentioned throughout the games, and were known for their skills in summoning spirits. Except they weren't spirits, they were demons.

The Prime Evils sensing not only the potential of Sanctuary but the dormant powers of the Nephalem in the human descendants of the Ancients, hatched a plan to corrupt humanity to their own ends. Rather than beam down to Sanctuary and start wreaking havoc, and alerting the High Heavens to its existence, The Prime Evils created a religion to corrupt unsuspecting humans — The Triune. The cult of the Three.

The Triune consisted of Three distinct sub-sects devoted to three guiding spirits, that were not at all suspicious:

Order of Dialon dedicated to the Spirit of Determination (not Diablo)

Order of Bala serving the Spirit of Creation (most definitely not Baal)

Order of Mefis serving the Spirit of Love (not Meph.... ok you get it)

As humans joined the religion of The Triune with good intentions, they would eventually be corrupted and brainwashed with the true teachings of the order. The leader of The Triune 'The Primus' was actually the son of Mephisto and Lilith's brother, Lucion. He obviously had a much better relationship with his father and wanted to take on the family business of hatred, destruction and general terror.

Diablo 4 trailer shows Inarius leading an army from the Cathedral of Light (Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment)

Inarius was not blind to the corruption of the Triune, and that there were others now at least in Hell that knew of Sanctuary. Still unwilling to let the High Heavens in on the secret of his paradise and the now powerless humans, he started an opposing religion — The Cathedral of Light. Taking on a mortal disguise Inarius became The Prophet, the leader of this competing religion. For centuries the two religions co-existed, competing for ultimate control over the hearts and minds of mortals, though with no direct conflict or confrontation that would alert the High Heavens.

Diablo Lore: The Sin War

The Sin War is a defining moment in the history of the Diablo Universe, and if you are going to read any of the numerous stories prior to playing the games, you'll want to start with this trilogy. Inarius, Lilith and Rathma all appear in these stories so they have relevance to the unfolding story in Diablo 4.

The books open with a seemingly innocent story of a farmer, Uldyssian ul-Diomed who is already disillusioned with the current control of the two established religions in Sanctuary. He believes that the Cathedral of Light and the Triune are self-serving and exploit the lower classes for their own means, and his unwillingness to pick a side gets him in hot water and framed for a murder he hasn't committed.

In the course of this tale, he meets and becomes infatuated with a noblewoman who shares his beliefs and wishes to help him raise a rebellion against these two factions, Lylia. Uldyssian begins to manifest powers, which he uses to free himself from captivity and escape with Lylia and a band of rebels. These powers not only grow but he finds himself able to awaken them in others and becomes a spiritual leader of an uprising against The Cathedral of Light and the Triune.

Lylia is revealed to be none other than Lilith, who has managed to escape the Void and return to Sanctuary. She has been manipulating the World Stone under the nose of Inarius to awaken the nephalem powers within humanity, starting with Uldyssian who is later revealed to be a direct descendant of Rathma. Lilith ultimately wants Uldyssian and his followers to join her in an uprising against both Heaven and Hell. Unfortunately, the awakening of this power backfires against Lilith, whose offer is rejected by Uldyssian as he now finds himself strong enough to fight her influence. In fact, Uldyssian can channel the power of the Ancients without her aid and uses this to again banish Lilith to the Void.

These actions don't go unnoticed by the High Heavens who are now aware of Sanctuary, humanity, and the presence of demons in this domain, and the full brunt of the Eternal Conflict is inflicted upon the world. Stopped only by the eventual sacrifice of Uldyssian who gives his life to banish both Angels and Demons from Sanctuary and seal off humanity once again. In this, he also wipes the memories of the humans who were impacted so they can no longer remember the power they once yielded or the existence of Uldyssian himself.

Uldyssian ul-Diomed (Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment)

Following this epic battle, both the Angiris Council and the Prime Evils are fully aware of the power that humans are capable of wielding and find themselves in the same quandry that Inarius and Lilith found themselves in at the beginning. Here it is revealed he fathered a child with Adria whilst possessed with Diablo's soul, oh and he was also the second child of King Leoric, oh and that child he fathered is Leah (I told you this story was bonkers).

Gaming laptop deals: Dell | Walmart | Lenovo | Best Buy | HP | Amazon | Razer

Leah’s body is used as a vessel for Diablo’s soul, Diablo then absorbs all the other Prime Evils’ souls from the Black Soulstone and becomes the Prime Evil, the ultimate incarnation of evil. He then opens a portal to Heaven and begins his assault on the High Heavens.

Diablo...you could have just knocked? (Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment)

The player character follows Diablo to Heaven and fights their way through his minions. This is because the World Stone is no longer supressing the innate power of humans, and we can call on our nephalem ancestry once again.
Diablo Immortal has been a gaming community punching bag for years, but I would argue that the reality of the game is more frustrating than anyone cared to imagine back during its disastrous reveal.

For those who don't know, Diablo Immortal is a mobile action RPG from Blizzard Entertainment, known for games like Warcraft and Overwatch. Diablo is a flagship IP for the Blizzard brand, and given how amazing Diablo IV looks, I highly expect Diablo will supersede all other Blizzard franchises to become their top property in the coming year. Of course, the lion's share of that accolade will probably go towards Diablo Immortal, owing to its aggressive and shameless pay-to-win gambling microtransaction (MTX) systems.

I ignored these sorts of games up until now. Sure, pay-to-win mobile games are nothing new, and typically I ignore the latest trending mobile game, because I know to expect a casino masquerading as a game. But the Diablo and Blizzard fan in me couldn't ignore this one, and in my ignorance, discovered a truly horrific vision of what the future of gaming might look like if Activision Blizzard execs had their way.

In my naivete, I told myself that perhaps everyone was being extra, and that the MTX couldn't be that bad — surely Blizzard wouldn't stoop as low as everyone is claiming. I had to see for myself, and it turned out to be even worse than I'd have ever imagined.

What makes it worse still is that behind the greed that spawned this game, there is a truly incredible array of art, writing, gameplay, and story delivery that almost comes across like an apology for the soulless business model that festers at its core.

Diablo Immortal and games like it are nothing short of a blight on the industry, and should probably come with a warning label.

The campaign over-delivers in a way that almost feels apologetic

I quite honestly want to preface this with what I love about Diablo Immortal, because I know that the dozens of artists, writers, and developers who work on this game didn't wake up one day and think, "How can we make the most messed-up game in existence?"

It's true that I have never quite loved and hated a game simultaneously so passionately as Diablo Immortal — because it's blatantly obvious this could have been a celebrated game, that defied the creeping rot of pay-to-win and progression-anchored gambling mechanics. Alas, what we have here is simply a lie.

Set in the gothic world of Sanctuary, you play as one of several magical adventurers who don enchanted equipment and ultimately set out to defend the world against evil. Sanctuary is a nestled oasis of comparative calm in a cosmos beset by war between heaven and hell. Hulking demonic engines seek to devour and corrupt humanity, and ultimately overthrow the heavens and dominate in an unrelenting quest for power. This has some of the best and most responsive touch controls I've experienced in a mobile game. The artwork and design are absolutely stunning, with a high-quality character creator system, with a huge diversity of biomes and locations. It has a vast menagerie of twisted beasts and monsters to slay, epic dungeon encounters with some truly jaw-dropping boss battles, and even a memorable story, with an unnerving demonic creature named Skarn serving as the central antagonist.

I have never quite loved and hated a game simultaneously so passionately as Diablo Immortal.

Throughout my time with Diablo Immortal, I was truly ensorcelled with what deceptively felt like a true Diablo experience. Blasting away swarms of monsters with my army of skeletons and undead necromantic beasts feels as good as it does in Diablo 3, regardless of what platform you choose to play on. I played about half of the campaign on PC, and half of it on my mobile phone. Some with touch, some with controller, and some with mouse and keyboard. It's truly a remarkable and seamless experience that is as impressive as Minecraft itself for platform agnosticism, with your progress following you no matter where you want to play.

The problem with that is, this writhing sense of foreboding also followed me, wherever I wanted to play. There was something about Diablo Immortal that felt all too familiar — a sick feeling, that I realize now is baked into the game by design.

Diablo's demonic themes are a convenient metaphor

Gene Park of the Washington Post recently wrote, "Diablo is about how anything is corruptible," in reference to the delivery of Diablo Immortal. There's frankly no better metaphor for what the game is, nor Blizzard's free-fall from grace as one of the industry's most celebrated publishers, to borderline pariah status.

Long-suffering Blizzard fans have watched the company hollow out World of Warcraft, ship one of the worst "remakes" in history in the form of Warcraft 3: Reforged, essentially kill the StarCraft franchise, and leave Heroes of the Storm in perpetual limbo. When Blizzard revealed Diablo Immortal, the response was outrage — because Diablo fans instinctively knew what mobile ultimately meant. It wasn't long after Blizzard confirmed a "true" sequel to Diablo III. Diablo IV looks incredible on paper, but you only need to look at the comments of any social media post referencing it to see a deluge of questions about pay to win and microtransactions.

I had to see for myself whether Diablo Immortal was really as bad as everybody was saying. I read the headlines about Twitch streamers plowing thousands of dollars into the game's microtransactional systems, only to receive none of the max-level loot the game's slot-machine gambling systems tease you with. The dirge of hyperbole and exaggeration that exists online is enough to push anyone to general skepticism, and hey, for a while I was having a blast with Diablo Immortal.

I was having so much fun with the game, I actually felt compelled to show some support by buying the Battle Pass, which for £16.99 gave me a steady stream of consumables, with the promise of a cool-looking cosmetic outfit at the end. I picked it up, and it wasn't long after that the game introduced me to one of its paid gambling systems, known as an Elder Rift.

Rifts were in Diablo III too, and feature procedurally populated dungeons with scaling difficulty, that comes with rewards at the very end. In Diablo III, they are, of course, free with the game. You can access them for free in Diablo Immortal as well, albeit with a nasty catch. To have even the vaguest chance of getting an item at the end of the run, you need to use a Crest, which, you guessed it, costs money. You can obtain a trickle of weaker Crests without paying, but Blizzard knows full well that this won't be viable for anyone who wants to keep up with the gear curve.

Blizzard has baked gambling into their games before, in the form of loot boxes. But these have been tied to cosmetic items that don't expire and don't give any competitive benefits to the player. Diablo Immortal is quite truly a different beast, with layers of transitory power progression rewards and added social pressure from its MMO formula. Indeed, higher-level players are forced to play in groups, which simply adds to the pressure cooker by design.

By picking up the Battle Pass I was unwittingly throwing myself into a Kafkaesque purgatory of in-game currencies and gambling systems, that aggressively reward those who pay up, and punish those who don't. The game actively tries to deceive the player, hoping to entrap you in a psychological vice that revolves around exploiting those with addictive tendencies, layered with limitless sunk cost fallacy.

I know this because I have struggled with addiction in my life. I don't like to talk about my personal struggles when producing content, but it's rare a game made me so viscerally disgusted — and it's sadly a disgust I know all too well.

I am someone who has been over 420 pounds at 5'8" in the past. I lost 200 pounds in my mid-20s, I gained a bunch back during the pandemic, but last year, once again, lost 100 pounds (using Microsoft Excel, no less). I'm also someone who just generally has an addictive personality, whether it's food, alcohol, or in the past, painkillers — it's something I've been trying to untangle about myself for two decades.

I sorely hope that I won't end up over 420 pounds again in the future, and have generally kept a lid on binge-eating and alcohol abuse. Yet, I felt myself deploying familiar mental gymnastics I used to use to justify buying up Crests in Diablo Immortal.

Diablo Immortal is specifically, and aggressively, designed with the intent to amplify and curate those very same addictive tendencies I try to bury. The game on-ramps you shamelessly with scaling rewards that are cheap to start with, but gradually increase in price, emblazoned with arbitrary "400% added value!" to trick you into thinking you're getting a deal. The game's Crests modify Elder Rifts to increase the chance of loot and gems dropping, which spew out of the chest in a familiarly satisfying fashion to Diablo III, poking at reward triggers that Diablo III players have already learned to enjoy.

The Crests essentially function in the same way as the draw of a slot machine. The Rifts themselves take no skill to complete and only last for about 2 minutes of gameplay. There's essentially no point to them besides finding out whether the money you spent translates into a reward at the end, and they almost always will — however, it more likely than not won't be a reward you actually need. Convincing you to, once again, feed it more dollars.

The strategies the addictive part of my brain would use to circumvent the rational part started coming into play. It's only through training myself to get control over my thoughts that I heard myself trying to conjure up familiar justifications to buy more Crests. It simply makes no rational sense in a game that will always reward the player who spent more.

Even if you get a ton of loot from one round of premium Crests, because of the way the game works, you'll only need more and more Crests in perpetuity. It's the same cycle as bingeing on anything in this way — chasing an end goal that ultimately never comes.

I got to Paragon level 15, trying to find a way to make Diablo Immortal's endgame fun without contributing to the casino. Unfortunately, the only fun Blizzard put into Diablo Immortal — the loot — is hidden behind layers of micropayments and gambling. It betrays the quality of the game and the developers who worked on it. It betrays gaming as a whole because it's another brick chipped out of the shrinking wall that stands against pay-to-win in AAA games.

Through Diablo Immortal, today's Blizzard is ultimately admitting that it doesn't care about the well-being of its audience.

If Diablo Immortal becomes the standard, AAA games will end up as playgrounds for the rich, where free-to-play players are simply there for richer players' amusement. And worse, for those who can't resist, they will be designed to exploit those with atypical neurology, or even trauma, which encourages addictive and potentially self-destructive behavior.

You may feel completely unaffected by Blizzard's dark patterns, and perhaps you're even someone who even enjoys spending your money that way and can afford to do so. I'm not trying to absolve myself of personal responsibility for my habits, nor am I suggesting that Diablo Immortal or video games are comparable to the destructive force of full-blown chemical dependency. It's simply that no video game has ever sparked memories of those sorts of chemical dependencies in my own life.

Ultimately, I'm disturbed at how the game made me feel, in various ways. Even if those feelings were in passing, video games are supposed to be fun — they're not supposed to twist and mold your psyche like this. Every system in Diablo Immortal is designed to prey upon its players, and the Diablo fanbase at large, wholly with intent. For me, this is Blizzard admitting that it doesn't care about the well-being of its audience.

The Microsoft acquisition can't come fast enough

Activision-Blizzard led by CEO Bobby Kotick has lurched from scandal to scandal, while losing tens of millions of its monthly active users through cut corners and short-sighted strategizing from Activision's executive layer. The decisions and actions of a small part of Activision Blizzard's management layer continue to blight the company's image, presiding over an exodus of top talent.

Then comes Microsoft, which seeks to purchase the company over the next year. I've written before about how I'm excited for the future of Blizzard under Microsoft, which as a fan, I hope only leads to a better quality of life for the company's developers and staff. Microsoft is one of the few big gaming companies that experimented with but ultimately pulled back on progressive gambling mechanics in its games. With Microsoft's renewed focus on mobile gaming via Xbox Game Pass, I can only hope they'll cast similar judgment over Diablo Immortal's business model once the acquisition closes. But again, perhaps that's naive of me.

At least actual casinos don't try to hide the fact that they're a casino.

It's painful seeing Diablo Immortal's art and design get overlooked amidst all this controversy, but I can only imagine how painful it is for someone who worked on the game and had no part in these "business" decisions. I'm sure Activision Blizzard execs tell themselves that they're the good guys for offering what amounts to a sizeable co-op ARPG for "free," but like the game itself, it's ultimately a lie to bury the sleazy casino hidden underneath. At least actual casinos don't try to hide the fact that they're a casino. Diablo Immortal beats you into a false sense of security before turning on the neon lights.

I have quit games because I was bored, I have quit games because I had completed them — but Diablo Immortal is the first time I've quit a game because I felt layers of disturbing psychological pressure. For me, it's a bit of a dark day.

Diablo Immortal has finally arrived on mobile and PC, and it marks the first time that an entry in Blizzard's famous dungeon-crawling franchise has been available to players completely free of charge at launch. However, even though removing the barrier to entry means that players can easily get in on the demon-slaying action, it meant that the developers needed to add microtransactions to Diablo Immortal to make money. Now that the game is out, many have asked whether these in-game purchases have made Diablo Immortal a pay-to-win experience.

In an effort to answer that question, we've put together a complete overview of Diablo Immortal's microtransactions. This includes details on whether or not Diablo Immortal is pay-to-win and detailed information about how the game's microtransaction systems work.

Is Diablo Immortal pay-to-win?

Ultimately, Diablo Immortal isn't technically a pay-to-win game since there are no gameplay items that you need to spend real-world money on (with the exception of one type of gem in the premium Battle Pass).

That said, Diablo Immortal's microtransactions do help you "pay-to-skip" a large portion of the game's grind because you can purchase items that significantly improve the chances of (or even guarantee) quality item drops. You can also obtain resources that allow you to "re-roll" the stats of Legendary items or purchase gear directly from other players in the Marketplace. Otherwise, the microtransactions are used to purchase cosmetics or the premium Battle Pass.

At the heart of Diablo Immortal's microtransaction systems are Eternal Orbs, which is the game's premium currency that's only obtainable with real money.

Diablo Immortal Eternal Orbs explained: Platinum, Crests, and Reforge Stones

On top of using them to buy flashy cosmetics, there are numerous ways you can gain progression advantages with Eternal Orbs in Diablo Immortal. However, you'll need to pay up with real money to get them. While they'll occasionally go on sale, this is what that'll cost you:

60 Eternal Orbs for $0.99

315 Eternal Orbs for $4.99

630 Eternal Orbs for $9.99

1,650 Eternal Orbs for $24.99

3,450 Eternal Orbs for $49.99

7,200 Eternal Orbs for $99.99

One way you can use Eternal Orbs to speed up your progression is to purchase Platinum, which is a versatile currency you can use to forge powerful Legendary Gems at the Apprentice Jewelcrafter, buy Echo Crystals that can be used to upgrade regular gems beyond Rank 5, obtain a Legendary Crest from the Crest Merchant (limit of one per day), and purchase gear and upgrade materials from other players on the Marketplace. While Platinum can be earned by completing daily quests, you can instantly get large quantities of it by spending Eternal Orbs.

Alternatively, you can use Eternal Orbs to purchase Rare and Legendary Crests directly from the Crest Merchant. Rare Crests increase the chance that a Legendary Gem will drop after completing an Elder Rift dungeon by 10%, while Legendary Crests guarantee that one will drop.

Both crest types also guarantee that Runes, a material used to craft Legendary Gems outside of dungeons, will drop as well. There's no limit to how many crests you can get when using Eternal Orbs like there is when using Platinum, and while you can earn crests by trading Fading Embers or Hilts for them with vendors, these items are very rare. As a result, the only way to get crests quickly is to use Eternal Orbs.

Lastly, it's possible to purchase Reforge Stones with Eternal Orbs, which you can only earn by trading Hilts or as rewards at the end of PvP seasons otherwise. These items allow you to re-roll the stats of Legendary weapons and armor until you get the effects you want for your build, but due to the RNG nature of this system, you'll probably need to use several Reforge Stones to get what you're looking for. Since you're unable to get Reforge Stones through gameplay frequently, you'll need to cough up money for Eternal Orbs to get a lot of them fast.

What about Diablo Immortal's 'Empowered' Battle Pass?

Diablo Immortal's "Empowered" $4.99 Battle Pass still gives players a way to make their experience smoother and less grindy, though the impact it has on progression is significantly lower than using Eternal Orbs. Both the free and Empowered Battle Pass awards players with helpful crafting materials and other useful items as they rank up, but owners of the Empowered version get both rewards. Additionally, Empowered Battle Pass tiers give players massive amounts of experience when completed, which makes the process of leveling up your character much faster.

The Empowered Battle Pass also contains the one item you can't get in Diablo Immortal without forking over some cash: the Fervent Fang gem. This two-star gem gives your character a stacking damage buff against enemies you've previously hit, which makes it an excellent tool against tough enemies or bosses. It's a component in many of the best Diablo Immortal builds, and while you don't need it to be effective in PvE content, it's definitely nice to have.

Conclusion: It's complicated

Diablo Immortal isn't necessarily pay-to-win, but players who don't mind opening their wallet for Eternal Orbs or the Empowered Battle Pass will make progress much faster than free-to-play players. You don't have to worry about missing out on strong gear (other than the Fervent Fang gem) if you don't want to spend any money, but getting Legendary Gems and optimal stat rolls on weapons and armor will take you significantly longer to get compared to a player buying Diablo Immortal's microtransactions.

Diablo Immortal is finally here, and it's one of the best multiplayer games to play if you like getting tons of loot and battling your way through demon-infested dungeons with friends.
Like most other loot-focused games, Diablo Immortal is all about making your character stronger by leveling them up and equipping them with the skills and gear that you've unlocked throughout your adventures. With the right combination of character attributes, class abilities, and gems, you'll become an unstoppable force. This combination is what's known as a build, and putting an effective one together is the best way to optimize your power and effectiveness in both PvE and PvP.

There are a countless amount of builds possible in Diablo Immortal, but some are more effective than others due to how attributes, skills, and gems used in them synergize with one another (weapons and armor are more up to personal preference as long as they have a high gear score). In this guide, we'll go over the best builds that are available for each of the game's six classes, as well as how you need to play to capitalize on the potential of each one.

Diablo Immortal best Crusader build

Attributes: Strength, Fortitude, Vitality

Primary skill: Punish

Secondary skills: Draw and Quarter, Conjuration of Light, Holy Banner, Spinning Shield

Gems: Everlasting Torment, Fervent Fang, Berserker's Eye, Lightning Core, Seled's Weakening, Battleguard

As a Crusader, you're at your strongest while drawing enemy aggro for your allies on the frontline with area-of-effect (AoE) melee strikes, soaking up damage with your high defenses and applying powerful buffs to everyone in your party. As a result, the best Crusader build is the one that gives you strong tanking capabilities while also allowing you to dish out effective damage to enemies and supportive spells to your companions.

You'll want to focus on Strength, Fortitude, and Vitality as your primary attributes, as Strength will increase your melee power while Fortitude and Vitality will make you very durable with a stronger armor rating and more health, respectively. Punish is the ideal primary skill for this build since it deals good damage and raises the chance you'll block incoming attacks, reducing their damage by 20 percent. Conjuration of Light and Holy Banner are the best secondary skills to use for buffing allies, as the former makes everyone in your party invincible for three seconds while the latter provides everyone with a 100% critical hit chance. Spinning Shield lets you throw your shield like a boomerang to pull enemies in, while Draw and Quarter allows you to use a horse to ride ahead of your party and aggro groups of upcoming enemies into one spot for easy crowd control.

When it comes to gems, Everlasting Torrent has phenomenal synergy with Holy Banner since it allows you to apply the Agony debuff to enemies whenever you hit them with a crit. This debuff damages foes over time and raises your attack speed, too. Fervent Fang ramps up your damage against single foes as you repeatedly whack them, which helps make up for the Crusader's low single-target damage. Berserker's Eye raises your damage and the damage you take, too, but your high defenses effectively counter this negative effect. Lightning Core deals AoE damage to foes near the enemy you're hitting, while Seled's Awakening boosts your damage after you take down an Elite enemy. Finally, the Battleguard gem significantly reduces all incoming damage from enemies that are close to you, which is perfect for the Crusader melee tank playstyle.

Diablo Immortal best Barbarian build

Attributes: Strength, Vitality

Primary skill: Lacerate

Secondary skills: Leap, Whirlwind, Wrath of the Berserker, Undying Rage

Gems: Trickshot Gem, Everlasting Torment, Fervent Fang, Berserker's Eye, Lightning Core, The Hunger

Barbarians are all about jumping into the thick of the fray and rapidly dealing as much heavy melee damage as possible, so our goal with this build is to enhance your ability to do just that. Investing heavily into Strength and Vitality is an excellent way to do this, as you'll want the best melee damage possible as well as a large health pool to offset the Barbarian's lack of strong damage mitigation options in Diablo Immortal.

For skills, we strongly recommend using Lacerate as your primary skill since every third hit you land with this melee ability will heal you, allowing you to stay aggressive for longer periods of time. Whirlwind allows you to continuously strike all nearby foes with vicious AoE attacks, while Wrath of the Berserker significantly raises your attack and movement speed. Finally, Undying Rage gives you four seconds of invincibility that stops you from dying when your health is depleted, and it also makes your attacks heal you for a short time.

Many of the gems we recommend for the Crusader are also the best options for Barbarians, including the Everlasting Torment, Fervent Fang, Berserker's Eye, and Lightning Core. The Trickshot Gem and The Hunger are also fantastic Barbarian gems, as the former makes Whirlwind last longer while the latter regenerates a chunk of your health every time you kill an enemy.

Diablo Immortal best Monk build

Attributes: Strength, Vitality, Willpower

Primary skill: Fists of Thunder

Secondary skills: Flying Kick, Exploding Palm, Imprisoned Fist, Seven-Sided Strike

Gems: Chained Death, Fervent Fang, Ca'arsen's Invigoration, Nightmare Wreath, Lightning Core, Cutthroat's Grin

Monks are a powerful melee support class that doesn't hit quite as hard as the Barbarian, but is capable of applying debuffs and knockback to enemies to make up for that. Additionally, Monks also have excellent mobility and can harass enemies constantly by using their high movement and attack speed to keep the pressure on. Therefore, the best stats for the Monk to level are Strength, Vitality, and Willpower. Strength is important for making your melee strikes as effective as possible, while Vitality is always nice to have as a close-range class. Investing points into Willpower isn't a bad idea, either, as it will improve the duration and effectiveness of debuffs and knockback stuns you apply to foes.

Fists of Thunder is the Monk's best primary skill, as it allows you to rapidly teleport between enemies and repeatedly punch them for lots of quick damage. Flying Kick is useful for kicking groups of enemies into walls to stun them and deal strong damage, while Exploding Palm inflicts Bleeding on foes. Enemies that die while Bleeding explode and deal high damage to other mobs, making Exploding Palm one of the best crowd control abilities in Diablo Immortal. Imprisoned Fist completely immobilizes your foes for several seconds, while Seven-Sided Strike can be used to rapidly dash between them and land seven powerful hits (the damage of this ability is reduced by half if you hit the same enemy more than once with it, so save it for dealing with large groups).

For gems, we recommend Chained Death and Fervent Fang for their ability to ramp up your damage when you're hitting multiple enemies or the same enemy multiple times, respectively. Ca'arsen's Invigoration buffs your high attack speed even further, and Nightmare Wreath has a chance to make enemies flee when you hit them, making it easy for you and your allies to finish them off. Meanwhile, Lightning Core provides additional AoE damage to your melee strikes, while Cutthroat's Grin boosts your damage when hitting mobs from behind. This is normally very difficult to do with any other class, but the Monk's fast movement speed makes landing "backstabs" much easier.

Diablo Immortal best Demon Hunter build

Attributes: Strength, Fortitude

Primary skill: Crossbow Shot

Secondary skills: Vengeance, Rain of Vengeance, Multishot, Knockback Shot

Gems: Everlasting Torment, Ca'arsen's Invigoration, Power and Command, Bloody Reach, Berserker's Eye, Seled's Weakening

The best way to build a Demon Hunter is to spec into everything that boosts your damage against individual targets. This is because the Demon Hunter is the best Diablo Immortal class in terms of single-target DPS, making them very powerful against bosses (as long as you stay far away from them, of course). To do this, you'll want lots of points in both Strength and Fortitude. The former directly buffs the damage of your crossbow, while the latter increases your armor penetration and helps you deal more critical hits.

Stick with Crossbow Shot as your primary skill, as it does more direct damage than the AoE-focused Explosive Arrow alternative. The Vengeance skill is a must-have since it makes your primary attacks fire two additional shots for even higher DPS potential, while Multishot is fantastic for burst damage. Rain of Vengeance and Knockback Shot are both excellent for crowd control around large hordes of mobs in situations where you need to kill lots of enemies quickly.

The Everlasting Torment gem synergizes wonderfully with your high critical hit chance, as it applies the Agony debuff and raises your attack speed when you score a crit. Ca'arsen's Invigoration also buffs your attack speed, too, and Power and Command alternates between improving your primary attack damage and your other types of damage every nine seconds. The Bloody Reach, Berserker's Eye, and Seled's Weakening buff your damage as well, boosting your already high DPS to insane levels.

Diablo Immortal best Wizard build

Attributes: Intelligence, Vitality

Primary skill: Magic Missile

Secondary skills: Black Hole, Meteor, Scorch, Arcane Wind

Gems: Chained Death, Bloody Reach, Berserker's Eye, Seled's Weakening, Lightning Core, Nightmare Wreath

The Wizard is essentially the crowd control version of the Demon Hunter, as they excel at nuking hordes of mobs with vicious AoE magic spells. With that in mind, you should pump your Intelligence and Vitality stats as you level up so that you can maximize your magic damage potential while also giving yourself enough HP to survive taking some hits if enemies catch you off-guard.

While Electrocute seems like it would be the best primary skill for the Wizard due to its AoE nature, it doesn't do enough damage in endgame content. Therefore, we strongly recommend using Magic Missile instead, especially since the Wizard has plenty of other awesome AoE spells at their disposal anyway. Black Hole can be used to pull groups of enemies together, which you can then obliterate with the powerful Meteor skill that creates a massive explosion and deals extreme damage. Scorch allows you to launch a large fire orb that deals strong damage and pushes enemies away, while Arcane Wind can be used to create deadly firestorms if aimed at areas where Meteor or Scorch landed.

The Chained Death, Bloody Reach, Berserker's Eye, and Seled's Weakening gems all provide the Wizard with incredible damage boosts, while Lightning Core provides additional AoE damage that will often finish off enemies that survive your primary attack and magic skills. Nightmare Wreath's ability to make enemies run away from you is also very useful since you want your opponents to be as far away as possible.

Diablo Immortal best Necromancer build

Attributes: Intelligence, Vitality, Fortitude

Primary skill: Soulfire

Secondary skills: Command Skeletons, Command Golem, Corpse Explosion, Bone Armor

Gems: Freedom and Devotion, Follower's Burden, Chained Death, Bloody Reach, Berserker's Eye, Seled's Weakening

While Diablo Immortal is one of the best multiplayer games available right now, it's also incredibly fun to play solo, too. The best build for solo play revolves around the strengths of the Necromancer class, and while other classes will typically be more effective in group PvE and PvP, the Necromancer can still be very powerful in these scenarios, too. As a Necromancer, you'll primarily want to level Intelligence and Vitality for magic damage and health, respectively. Throwing a few points into Fortitude is a good idea, too, as you'll want to have some extra damage mitigation to help you survive against fast opponents that can take advantage of your low mobility.

When it comes to skills, your primary one should be Soulfire, as it's a well-rounded ability that deals explosive damage to the target it hits as well as the foes near them. Your other skills should include Command Skeletons and Command Golem, as these allow you to summon a horde of skeletons or a massive tanky golem that deals huge damage, respectively. These "pets" essentially fulfill the same role that a friendly Crusader or Barbarian would in multiplayer: distracting enemies so that you can cast magic attacks safely. Corpse Explosion is another powerful skill that makes the corpses of recently-defeated foes explode, while Bone Armor can be used to raise your resistance to incoming damage in a pinch.

Like the Wizard, the Necromancer benefits greatly from the Chained Death, Bloody Reach, Berserker's Eye, and Seled's Weakening gems that boost damage significantly when attacking repeatedly from afar. Make sure you also use the Freedom and Devotion and Follower's Burden gems, too, as the former increases the duration and damage of your summons while the latter makes them tankier and buffs your damage with each additional minion you raise.

After a long four-year wait, fans can finally get their hands on Diablo Immortal. Blizzard's latest installment in the iconic dungeon-crawling franchise is available now on mobile, but you can also download the game's open beta on PC. But what should you expect from the Diablo Immortal beta PC beta?

In this guide, we'll go over everything you need to know about the Diablo Immortal open beta on PC, including what type of content you'll be able to engage with, the beta's download size, and how to download and install it on your rig.

Diablo Immortal PC beta: What to expect

Like previous Diablo titles, Diablo Immortal is a dungeon crawler where you and multiple other players can group up to explore and fight your way through various levels and raids, upgrading your character with new skills and gear as you make progress. Additionally, you can also load into PvP games with other players, allowing you and your friends to test your mettle against others.

Note that Diablo Immortal is also fully playable solo, so you don't have to play in groups if you don't want to. With that said, the game is one of the best games to play co-op in right now if you like multiplayer PvE since you have a better chance of getting quality gear to drop when grouped with others. All six of Diablo Immortal's classes are also designed to synergize with each other, which makes working as a team with others very rewarding. Additionally, you can also join an MMO-style clan to make partying up with others easier, and there are also smaller clans called Warbands that are ideal for groups planning on grinding special eight-player Helliquary Raids frequently.

Story-wise, Diablo Immortal takes place directly after Diablo II but before Diablo III. At this time, the Worldstone — essentially the cosmic power that led to creation itself — was shattered, leaving the world of Sanctuary vulnerable to Hell-spawned evils like demons, the undead, and vicious beasts. As a defender of Sanctuary and the city of Westmarch, your task is to lead a counteroffensive against these threats and push back the forces of Hell. Along the way, you'll meet familiar faces from previous Diablo games like Deckard Cain, as well as brand new characters.

Diablo Immortal PC: Launch time & release date

While Diablo Immortal launched early on iOS and Android, its PC open beta arrived a little later than its mobile counterparts.
The long-awaited Diablo Immortal is finally in PC beta, and if you're planning on jumping into the demon-slaying action, you should study up on each of the game's classes before you make your character. Choosing your class is the biggest decision you can make in Diablo Immortal since it will determine your strengths and weaknesses for the entire game. While every class is viable, some of them are better than others when it comes to specific activities and playstyles.

In this guide, we'll go over everything you need to know about picking a class, including what classes are generally the best, what to expect from each class, and which ones are ideal for solo play, PvE, and PvP.

DIablo Immortal class tier list

This Diablo Immortal tier list will give you an idea of which classes are the best and worst at a glance. Each one features different strengths and weaknesses that dictate how it operates, and it's important to understand these before choosing a class to play.

Crusader: The Crusader is Diablo Immortal's most versatile class. They deal strong area-of-effect (AoE) melee damage, can buff themselves and their allies, and can even ride their steed around the battlefield for unparalleled mobility. They're also the tankiest class of the bunch, allowing them to take hits that would kill other classes. However, they have no range and they don't have the same burst impact you'll get with a more specialized class.

Barbarian: The Barbarian is Diablo Immortal's dedicated melee DPS class, and as such, they can deal unrivaled close-range damage. They also have great mobility that helps them close the distance quickly, though they're less tanky than Crusaders. As a result, Barbarians can be a little tricky to play in the late game since the nature of the class often puts them in harm's way.

Monk: The Monk is a melee damage/support hybrid that excels at chipping foes down and providing buffs to nearby allies, while also avoiding damage with their exceptional mobility. They don't have a ton of health and don't deal the greatest damage, either, but the boosts they provide make Monks strong in group settings.

Demon Hunter: The Demon Hunter is Diablo Immortal's "sniper" class, able to deal large single-target damage from afar. They also have decent mobility and can move around while using their abilities, which is helpful when you're trying to stay away from melee threats. Demon Hunters have low health, though, so they can't take many hits.

Wizard: Wizards are similar to Demon Hunters in that they attack from a range. While the Demon Hunter is all about single-target DPS, Wizards excel at nuking groups of trash mobs with lethal AoE magic. They also have decent mobility like Demon Hunters do, though they lack the ability to use their magic while moving.

Necromancer: The Necromancer can raise corpses as undead skeleton allies, and can dish out strong single-target and AoE damage from range. With that said, they also have very little health and mobility, making them a glass cannon. The ability to spawn squads of minions helps offset these weaknesses, but even so, playing a Necromancer leaves little room for error.

Diablo Immortal best solo class

While Diablo Immortal fully supports multiplayer with friends, it's entirely possible to play through the game yourself and have a great experience. These are the best classes for solo play.

Necromancer: While Necromancers aren't as effective as other classes in group PvE or PvP, they're an excellent choice for solo players. Their undead minions effectively fulfill the frontline brawler role that melee players do in multiplayer, allowing them to safely blast enemies with powerful ranged magic. Necromancer is tougher to play in the late game since enemies hit hard and they don't have a ton of health, but they're still a top pick for solo gameplay.

Barbarian: Barbarians work well when used solo since their crazy high AoE melee DPS allows them to tear through crowds of mobs with ease and they hit bosses pretty hard. Their Undying Rage ability also gives them a way to literally cheat death, temporarily becoming invincible when reduced to 1 HP and then getting health back by damaging foes.

Crusader: The Crusader class's flexibility makes it a great choice for solo play. The ability to tank plenty of damage while also dishing plenty of it out yourself is awesome, and the horse Crusaders get makes it easy to move between foes or kite mobs if necessary.

Diablo Immortal best PvE class

Diablo has always been one of the best games to play if you enjoy romping through PvE dungeons with friends, and that hasn't changed with Diablo Immortal. Here's an overview of the classes that are best optimized for group PvE content.

Crusader: Crusaders serve as fantastic frontline melee fighters in group PvE, as they can empower allies with buffs, deal strong damage, and draw aggro so that other players can maximize the damage potential of their squishier characters. They can also use their horse to kite groups of mobs into one large clump, making it easy for an allied Wizard or Barbarian to dispatch them with AoE attacks.

Demon Hunter: Demon Hunters are the best class to pick if you want to maximize boss-killing potential, as their uniquely high single-target damage is perfect for this role. The ability to move while using abilities also makes them less risky to play than Wizards, though they aren't as effective at dealing with groups.

Wizard: The Wizard class is tough to use in solo or PvP play due to the immobile nature of their magic casting, but this isn't much of a problem in group PvE since you'll likely have an allied Crusader or Barbarian drawing enemy aggro. This will give you plenty of opportunities to safely launch volley after volley of deadly AoE magic.

Diablo Immortal best PvP class

While ranged firepower can be effective, melee combat is generally the way to go in Diablo Immortal PvP. All three of the game's melee classes excel against other players, though each one is effective for different reasons.

Monk: Monks have low cooldowns and incredible mobility, making them the ideal class for harassing enemy players and baiting them into wasting their cooldowns with skillful movement. The buffs that Monks can provide also makes other melee fighters even more effective, and these boosts often make a huge difference in PvP engagements.

Crusader: Surprise, surprise — Crusaders are quite powerful in PvP, too. Their high durability and ability to buff makes them excellent frontline tanks, and they can also use their steed to chase down injured players trying to retreat with ease. They don't deal as much damage as a Barbarian, but they can also stay in the fight without having to back off longer, too.

Barbarian: With their vicious AoE melee combos and high mobility, Barbarians are a force to be reckoned with in PvP. They eat ranged classes for breakfast, and if they're fighting alongside some allies, they can burst down even the tankiest Crusader with frightening speed. The only downside to the Barbarian is that they're not tanky themselves, and can be quickly killed by other Barbarians or Demon Hunters that get the drop on you from afar.

Which class will you choose?

Ultimately, all six of Diablo Immortal's classes are powerful and viable, though some of them are better than others. The best class in the game is arguably the Crusader, as their tankiness, strong AoE melee damage, ability to buff, and extremely high mobility makes them well-rounded and effective in all types of gameplay.

If you're going through Diablo Immortal solo, you'll find the most success with a Necromancer. While Necromancers struggle in PvP due to their low health and mobility, and aren't very useful in group PvE since their minions don't work in groups, raising undead that tank for you while you nuke mobs from long range is extremely powerful in solo play. Barbarian is another powerful choice for a singleplayer approach, as their sky-high melee damage and Undying Rage ability make them very self-reliant.

Fans of sniper playstyles should look no further than the Demon Hunter, which can deal huge damage to bosses (or tanky Crusader players in PvP) thanks to its high single-target damage. Demon Hunters also have the ability to attack while moving, which helps them maintain steady DPS when they have to move in response to incoming melee attackers. Consider giving a Wizard a shot, too, as even though they have to remain stationary while casting, the massive levels of AoE magic damage Wizards can dish out will make short work of any trash mobs in sight.

Ultimately, you'll have a good time in Diablo Immortal no matter which class you choose. With that said, picking the best classes for the way you want to engage with the game and its content will help you maximize your effectiveness and achieve the most success.

Diablo Immortal

Diablo Immortal brings the demon-infested, loot-filled world of Diablo to the palm of your hands with the mobile version.
The world of Sanctuary has been thrown into absolute chaos following the events of Diablo II. The Worldstone has been shattered, and the foul minions of Diablo are vying to obtain the broken pieces and use them to bring their evil master back to life.

If players wish to prevent Diablo’s return, they will need to take arms and learn to master one of the many classes of Diablo Immortal. These classes range from nigh-unkillable Barbarians, magic-wielding Wizards, and even Necromancers that raise armies of undead soldiers in battle, and more.

With a plethora of classes to choose from, it can be difficult to decide which one to start out with that fits your playstyle. So, we have compiled a list of all the available classes in Diablo Immortal to help you choose when first venturing forth into the world of Sanctuary.

Barbarian

The Barbarian is a savage class that relies on brute force and unyielding anger to destroy their enemies. Barbarians can also use their ire to motivate fellow allies to tap into their inner rage and deal more damage on their end.

Crusader

The Crusader is a paladin-inspired class that focuses on protecting their party and smiting enemies with holy light.
