<p>On <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-11">Windows 11</a>, if GIFs suddenly disappeared from the emoji panel, the problem wasn't caused by a broken update. It was caused by a service the operating system depended on quietly going away.</p><p>Starting <strong>June 30, 2026</strong>, users on versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1 began seeing a <strong>"GIF service is not available"</strong> message after pressing the <strong>Windows key + . (period) </strong>keyboard shortcut to open the emoji panel. Microsoft has now <a href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-25h2#4891msgdesc">confirmed the issue</a> affects devices that haven't installed its l<a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-11/windows-11s-july-2026-update-is-packed-with-new-features-and-these-are-the-top-ones">atest optional update</a>, which replaces Google's Tenor service with GIPHY.</p><h2 id="why-this-happened">Why this happened</h2><p>This wasn't a traditional bug with the operating system. The emoji panel relied on the <strong>Tenor API </strong>to search and display animated GIFs, but Google <a href="https://support.google.com/tenor/answer/10455265#whatll-happen-to-the-tenor-api&zippy=%2Cwhatll-happen-to-the-tenor-api">retired that service</a> on June 30. Once the API was switched off, Windows 11 had nowhere to retrieve GIFs, leaving the feature effectively offline.</p><p><em><strong>"Starting June 30, 2026, install the latest Windows update to continue using GIFs in the Emoji panel. If you don't update, you will see a 'GIF service is not available' error in the panel," </strong></em>Microsoft explains.</p><p>Instead of restoring Tenor, the company moved to <strong>GIPHY</strong> before the shutdown. Microsoft included the change in the June 23 preview update for <a href="-26200-8737-and-26100-8737-preview-0e2a20f2-cf9e-46f8-9f08-e6996220882d#id0ebbn=normal_rollout">versions 25H2 and 24H2 (KB5095093)</a> and for version 26H1 (KB5095091), allowing updated systems to continue displaying GIFs without interruption.</p><h2 id="why-gifs-may-look-different">Why GIFs may look different</h2><p>The fix also changes the experience. Since Windows 11 now pulls results from <strong>GIPHY</strong> instead of <strong>Tenor</strong>, searches may return different animations, rankings, and content for the same keywords. The feature works the same way, but the library behind it has changed.</p><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:1139px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:66.55%;"><img id="6F48HiFxUFvbD33av5XJ9" name="emoji panel with GIPHY" alt="Notepad with emoji panel overlay showing GIFs." src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/6F48HiFxUFvbD33av5XJ9.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="1139" height="758" attribution="" endorsement="" class="inline expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/6F48HiFxUFvbD33av5XJ9.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Mauro Huculak)</span></figcaption></figure><h2 id="how-to-restore-gifs">How to restore GIFs</h2><p>If you're seeing this error, you can restore the functionality by installing the latest quality update from <strong>Settings </strong>> <strong>Windows Update</strong>. If you're doing this before the Patch Tuesday update release, then turn on the <strong>"Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" </strong>toggle switch.</p><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:1139px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:67.34%;"><img id="7fFSEa8K8uegi2mYsPPBSU" name="Windows 11 check for updates" alt="Windows 11 Settings showing the Windows Update settings." src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7fFSEa8K8uegi2mYsPPBSU.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="1139" height="767" attribution="" endorsement="" class="inline expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7fFSEa8K8uegi2mYsPPBSU.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Mauro Huculak)</span></figcaption></figure><p>Once the update is installed, the emoji panel automatically switches to <strong>GIPHY</strong>, and no additional configuration is required.</p><p>This is a reminder that even built-in features increasingly depend on online services outside Microsoft's control. When one of those services disappears, a feature that looks native to the operating system can stop working overnight until Microsoft rewires it to something else.</p><h2 id="windows-central-s-take">Windows Central's Take</h2><p>On Windows 11, when a core feature suddenly stops working, the default reaction is usually to assume Microsoft broke something in the latest update. However, after tracking updates for years, I've learned that the operating system is often (not always) just caught in the crossfire of third-party service changes.</p><div style="min-height: 250px;"> <div class="kwizly-quiz kwizly-ORV8vO"></div> </div> <script src="https://kwizly.com/embed/ORV8vO.js" async></script><p>In this case, the company handled the transition as smoothly as it could. Instead of leaving users stranded, they already had a replacement lined up, and installing the latest update fixes the issue immediately. Just keep in mind that since GIPHY is taking over for Tenor, your typical reaction GIFs might look a bit different from now on.</p><p><strong>Have you noticed any changes to the GIFs in the Windows 11 emoji panel, or are you still seeing Tenor?</strong> Let me know in the comments.</p><h2 id="more-resources">More resources</h2><p>Explore more in-depth how-to guides, troubleshooting advice, and essential tips to get the most out of Windows 11 and 10. <p>Windows 11’s <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-11/windows-11-rolls-out-new-emojis-but-one-flag-wont-show-up">emoji picker</a> has a new habit of breaking at the worst possible moment, and nothing is more annoying than watching the search box vanish for no reason. The good news is that the fix is fast, hidden, and works even when the UI looks completely broken.</p><p>If you’re like me, you admittedly abuse using emojis for various reasons, so when I’ve brought up the emoji picker in Windows 11 in the last few days, only to see the search box gone, well, it made my life a bit more difficult.<br><br>I figured maybe this is just a quirk with <em>my</em> PC until a colleague of mine, <a href="https://www.androidcentral.com/author/nicholas-sutrich">Nick Sutrich of Android Central</a>, brought it up in Slack, wondering if anyone else had seen this, and that’s when I would have dropped in some 👀 if only I could search for it.</p><div style="min-height: 250px;"> <div class="kwizly-quiz kwizly-XbvMMX"></div> </div> <script src="https://kwizly.com/embed/XbvMMX.js" async></script><p>Turns out, rebooting your PC often fixes it, but who has time for that during a weekday?</p><p>Luckily, there’s an easy way to fix this until Microsoft figures out what is causing it in the first place (note: I’m on <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-11/microsoft-unveils-major-windows-11-preview-program-overhaul-that-actually-lets-you-test-its-new-features-windows-insider-program-gains-new-experimental-and-beta-channels">Beta for Insiders</a>, which is hilarious, as I was 99.99% sure I signed up for Preview Release months ago, so that’s another thing for me to figure out as I just learned that writing this article).</p><p>Anyway, enough banter.</p><h2 id="how-to-get-back-search-for-windows-11-s-emoji-picker">How to get back ‘search’ for Windows 11’s emoji picker</h2><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2185px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:62.15%;"><img id="8xt8jGwfnLxCgPhMXDAwuY" name="Windows 11 Emoji Picker and search" alt="Windows Task Manager open with 'Processes' tab selected. <p>Windows 11 just gained a wave of new emojis, though there are limits on where they'll appear. Emoji 16.0 support is rolling out to Windows 11, <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/windows-11-now-supports-emoji-16-0/">according to Emojipedia</a> and spotted by <a href="https://www.windowslatest.com/2025/09/09/windows-11-24h2-rolls-out-emoji-16-0-support-but-it-doesnt-work-properly-yet/">Windows Latest</a>. The update is adding seven new emojis to the operating system.</p><p>Emoji 16.0 was first approved in September 2024, but it has taken time to roll out to Windows 11. It appears that support for the new emojis shipped with the <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-11/9-new-features-coming-with-the-september-2025-security-update-for-windows-11">September 2025 Patch Tuesday update</a>, though there's a chance it shipped to PCs earlier.</p><p>The new emojis only appear in<em> some</em> parts of Windows 11 at the moment. Pasting the new emojis into Microsoft Word works, but pasting them into Microsoft Edge results in a black rectangle that indicates an unsupported character.</p><p>Emoji 16.0 actually includes eight new emojis, but one of them is not supported on Windows 11. Microsoft has a history of not supporting geographic flag emojis, so it's unlikely we'll see the flag of Sark on Windows 11.</p><p>You can, however, see the flag of Sark if you paste it into WhatsApp on your PC.</p><p>For those unfamiliar, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sark">Wikipedia says Sark</a> is "an island in the southwestern English Channel, off the coast of Normandy, and part of the archipelago of the Channel Islands." Insert the "more you know" rainbow here.</p><p>Here are the eight emojis included with Emoji 16.0 (note that they may not render on your browser):</p><ul><li>🫩 Face with Bags Under Eyes</li><li>🫆 Fingerprint</li><li>🪾 Leafless Tree</li><li>🫜 Root Vegetable</li><li>🪉 Harp</li><li>🪏 Shovel</li><li>🫟 Splatter</li><li>🇨🇶 Flag for Sark</li></ul><p>You can see all of those emojis at <a href="https://emojipedia.org/emoji-16.0">Emojipedia</a> or copy and paste the above list into WhatsApp.</p><p>The new emojis do not appear in the Emoji Panel on Windows 11 at this time.</p><h2 id="when-will-emoji-17-be-supported-on-windows-11">When will Emoji 17 be supported on Windows 11?</h2><p>Earlier this week, Unicode confirmed the new emojis that will be added in 2026. That list includes seven new emojis: Distorted Face, Fight Cloud, Orca, Hairy Creature, Trombone, Landslide, and Treasure Chest.</p><p>Microsoft usually takes a while to support a new set of emojis. We likely won't see the emojis that are part of the Emoji 17.0 set until sometime in 2026.</p><p>Regardless of when Emoji 17.0 rolls out to Windows, it appears PC users will not be able to use the new set to troll Apple. Emoji 17.0 originally included an Apple Core emoji, but that was removed at the last minute.</p><p>According to an <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/whats-new-in-unicode-17-0/">Emojipedia blog post</a>, this is the first time in several years that the final roster of emojis changed between the preview stage and release.</p><p>When Unicode shared the <a href="https://www.unicode.org/L2/L2024/24226r-esr-report-q4-2024.pdf?ref=blog.emojipedia.org">preview of Emoji 17.0</a> in November of 2024, it included an Apple Core emoji.</p><p>Coincidentally, on the same day as Apple's big event announcing the <a href="https://www.techradar.com/phones/iphone/i-tried-the-iphone-air-and-its-so-exciting-i-might-ditch-my-pro-max">iPhone Air</a>, it was revealed that the Apple Core emoji would not ship with Emoji 17.0.</p><h2 id="emojigate">Emojigate</h2><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2253px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.24%;"><img id="uYvp9ZAjvMDSq4yLLzasrf" name="win-11-3d-emoji-rainbow-smile.jpg" alt="Windows 11 3D Emojis" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/uYvp9ZAjvMDSq4yLLzasrf.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="2253" height="1267" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="caption-text">Microsoft teasing 3D emojis then shipping 2D emojis caused controversy a few years ago. </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Microsoft)</span></figcaption></figure><p>Microsoft has a surprisingly complex history with emojis. A saga known as "<a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-may-bring-3d-emojis-windows-11-after-all">Emojigate</a>" saw the tech giant tease 3D emojis in Windows 11, a member of staff claim the wrong graphic had been used, and several blog posts and social media posts from Microsoft contradicting each other.</p><p>To be honest, I don't think emojis being 2D or 3D makes much of a difference. But both at the time and now, I think the communication on the subject reflects poorly on Microsoft.</p><p>I said during the <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsofts-emojigate-shows-why-windows-11-will-never-have-unified-design">height of Emojigate</a>:</p><p><em>"This saga isn't about emoji, at least not to me. I'm sure there are people that are upset about </em><a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows/windows-11"><em>Windows 11</em></a><em> having 3D or 2D emoji, but I think </em><a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-may-bring-3d-emojis-windows-11-after-all"><em>Emojigate</em></a><em> illustrates a larger problem within Microsoft's design process. If Microsoft can't deliver a clear message about what it plans to do with emoji, how can we expect the company to enact a unified design strategy across Windows 11? And if the company can't design emoji and then ship them to an OS, how can we expect Microsoft to unify the look of all of Windows 11, which is tremendously more complex?" </em></p><p>Windows 11 did <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-may-bring-3d-emojis-windows-11-after-all">eventually get 3D emojis</a> — and they're lovely. But that wasn't really what Emojigate was about.</p>

In the latest Windows 11 preview builds, <a href="https://twitter.com/phantomofearth/status/1865126826122641510">@Phantomofearth on X</a> spotted a new ID that enables an option in the Windows Settings app to add an emoji button to Windows 11's System Tray.</p><p>Right now, the option in Settings doesn't actually do anything, but its existence does confirm that Microsoft is as the very least considering adding an option to place an emoji button directly on the Taskbar. It's likey that the button will operate similarly to the Pen Menu button, which appears in the System Tray when you place a pen on the screen.</p><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2048px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:75.00%;"><img id="X4xpQLW86u9rsRe8aztJ7W" name="windows-10x-emoji-panel.jpg" alt="Windows 10X Emoji Panel" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/X4xpQLW86u9rsRe8aztJ7W.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="2048" height="1536" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="caption-text">The Windows emoji panel. </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Windows Central)</span></figcaption></figure><p>The emoji button will also appear in the System Tray, and will be configurable as to when it appears. You can set it to only appear when typing in a text field, or have it always on. The button will introduce more people to the Windows 11 <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/how-type-emoji-kaomoji-symbols-hardware-keyboard-windows-10">emoji panel</a>, which has been shipping as part of Windows since Windows 10, but isn't widely known as it's hidden behind a keyboard shortcut.</p><p>You can access the emoji panel today by pressing the Windows key and the period button. The panel gives you access to a wide library of emoji, kaomoji, gifs, symbols, and more. It's a super handy feature if you're frequently accessing emoji or symbols, but it's one of those interfaces that are hidden unless someone tells you about it.</p><p>With Microsoft adding a button for it to the Taskbar, it will introduce more people to its existence. The button will be placed in the System Tray, which exists on the right-side of the Taskbar. Of course, if you don't want an emoji button on the Taskbar you will still be able to turn it off. </p>

This kicked off <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/emojigate-people-are-mad-windows-11-wont-have-3d-emojis-after-all" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Emojigate</a> as disgruntled users took to social media to voice their disdain for the flat 2D emojis. </p><p>Emojigate somehow managed to be a flashpoint that <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/implications-windows-11-emojigate">made some question how much consumers opinions matter</a> and if <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsofts-emojigate-shows-why-windows-11-will-never-have-unified-design">Windows 11 could ever have a unified design</a> especially as <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-bringing-over-1800-fresh-emoji-teams-and-windows">3D emojis were promised for Microsoft Teams</a> and became <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/microsoft-open-sources-its-fluent-design-3d-emoji-for-designers-and-developers-to-remix">open source</a>. The release never happened, however, and it is most likely that 3D emojis were just victims of COVID-era delays and set backs much like we saw hit the gaming industry. Microsoft&apos;s focus was forced to prioritize other elements of Windows 11 and the emojis were put on the back burner.</p><figure role="gallery"><figure><img src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/QtmoHoozdt4pNo73JtTVyg.jpg" alt="Windows 11 3D Emojis" /><figcaption><small role="credit">Microsoft</small></figcaption></figure><figure><img src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/CxPbFTFi2szQwWeoAMG2qg.jpg" alt="Windows 11 3D Emojis" /><figcaption><small role="credit">Microsoft</small></figcaption></figure><figure><img src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/xbjALs2Z2SNTDRjYGtxFfg.jpg" alt="Windows 11 3D Emojis" /><figcaption><small role="credit">Microsoft</small></figcaption></figure><figure><img src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/yxusPbpjqeWicDWeZSn2Xg.jpg" alt="Windows 11 3D Emojis" /><figcaption><small role="credit">Microsoft</small></figcaption></figure><figure><img src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/uYvp9ZAjvMDSq4yLLzasrf.jpg" alt="Windows 11 3D Emojis" /><figcaption><small role="credit">Microsoft</small></figcaption></figure></figure><p>All that is in the past, hopefully, as 3D emojis make their way through the necessary Insider process for testing. This means designers and developers can take Microsoft&apos;s 3D designs and customize them to fit their needs.</p><p>Microsoft&apos;s Jon Friedman, corporate vice president of design and research highlights a key example of why open sourcing emoji design is important:</p><p>"... we wanted to ensure that every creator can build experiences that serve their community’s needs. This especially applies to developers and audiences who haven’t been historically included. A headdress, an Afro, a sari — enabling the world’s majority (aka Black and Brown people) to express themselves how they want, to whom they want, and when they want is not just powerful, but necessary."</p><p>The company has released the emoji library on <a href="https://github.com/microsoft/fluentui-emoji">Github</a> and <a href="https://www.figma.com/community/file/1138254942249677742">Figma</a>, which can be downloaded now in PNG or SVG file formats. Unfortunately, the open sourcing of Microsoft&apos;s emoji only applies to those in the public domain, meaning emoji that represent trademarks such as Clippy or Xbox aren&apos;t included in the open-source library.</p>

Such was the case with emojigate, which ruffled feathers of pictorially perturbed internet denizens and Microsoft fans.</p><p>To make a long story short: Microsoft was, and continues to be, very unclear with its <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-may-bring-3d-emojis-windows-11-after-all" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-may-bring-3d-emojis-windows-11-after-all">emoji intentions</a> for <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-11" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-11">Windows 11</a>. And this brings up the age-old problem of the company communicating one plan for Windows before opting for another, much to the confusion of its supporters and customers.</p><p>Is such a dynamic inevitable given the scope of Windows, or can it be changed to better satisfy consumers' wants of transparency and clarity? We asked experts to find out what the forecast looks like.</p><h2 id="how-much-do-consumers-matter">How much do consumers matter?</h2><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="gKQMhZgb9iK64oPHkWqzVE" name="" alt="Surface Laptop 4 Amd 2021 Hero" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gKQMhZgb9iK64oPHkWqzVE.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gKQMhZgb9iK64oPHkWqzVE.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=""><span class="caption-text">Source: Daniel Rubino / Windows Central </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Source: Daniel Rubino / Windows Central)</span></figcaption></figure><p>Windows is king of the hill in the business world, and there's no substitute quite like the enterprise space when it comes to money, so where does that leave consumers, the collectively massive but individually tiny core building blocks of Windows' userbase? When it comes to pleasantries such as emoji and the like, they're the ones who are most affected.</p><p>According to CCS Insight CEO Geoff Blaber, the existing dynamics of Windows may be shifting.</p><p>"Microsoft is seeking to balance an unprecedented range of hardware, software, customer and partner requirements with Windows 11," he said. "The result is that different elements of the OS are being developed on different timelines, but what is clear is that the consumer-facing aspects of Windows 11 are taking on a new importance. Inevitably that is resulting in changes to priorities."</p><p>Could a Microsoft of the near future ensure that another <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-10-may-be-last-version-windows-microsoft-rethinks-operating-system" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-10-may-be-last-version-windows-microsoft-rethinks-operating-system">"Windows 10 is the last version of Windows"</a> situation, and more recent items such as <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsofts-emojigate-shows-why-windows-11-will-never-have-unified-design" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsofts-emojigate-shows-why-windows-11-will-never-have-unified-design">emojigate</a>, never come to pass? Hypothetically speaking, it's on the table in the event the company is serious about its renewed effort to win over average people.</p><h2 id="credit-where-credit-39-s-due">Credit where credit's due</h2><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="g2oD7ARHz6JKse4N82BCDc" name="" alt="Windows 11 Tease" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/g2oD7ARHz6JKse4N82BCDc.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/g2oD7ARHz6JKse4N82BCDc.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=""><span class="caption-text">Source: Microsoft </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Source: Microsoft)</span></figcaption></figure><p>For what it's worth, even if some consumers do feel mildly betrayed over emojigate, that's still extraordinarily small fish in the sea that is Windows. The fact consumers have had functional Windows iterations for decades now is, in no small sense, an accomplishment on Microsoft's part given the scope of the technology.</p><p>Steve Kleynhans, the Vice President of Digital Workplace Infrastructure and Operations at Gartner, highlighted that point while clarifying Microsoft's not entirely off the hook for its missteps (though he wasn't a fan of trivializing real scandals by legitimizing "emojigate"). "There is no question that Microsoft's messaging around Windows can be unclear and indecisive, and that the roadmap can be more of a meandering rocky path, than a well-paved highway," he said, going on to note that these circumstances are inevitable with such a large, multifaceted product, sharing the sentiments of Blaber.</p><p>"A lot of the current complaints are related to the visual overhaul of the user experience in Windows 11 and how there are still inconsistencies and glitches throughout the OS," Kleynhans continued. "Frankly, I'm surprised they got as much done as they did. This is a 20-plus-year-old problem engrained across thousands of components in one of the most complex pieces of software ever launched to the public. Two decades of baggage aren't going to get cleaned up in one year."</p><p>He then elaborated on how every change has to take different Windows userbases into account. What works for the consumer might not be a good fit for IT, and vice versa, meaning mixed messaging and visual inconsistencies are likely to occur in such a large process. He also stated that perhaps the idea of 3D emoji, or other such features Microsoft hasn't quite been the clearest on over the years, sounds like a good concept in the early stages but hit complications toward the end when it comes to optimizing for different devices, leading to derailments that aren't always the easiest to foresee.</p><h2 id="pandemics-priorities-possibilities">Pandemics, priorities, possibilities</h2><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="RuG5nT5rtePpkuVufTs8LB" name="" alt="Windows 11 Start Menu October Tease" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/RuG5nT5rtePpkuVufTs8LB.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/RuG5nT5rtePpkuVufTs8LB.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=""><span class="caption-text">Source: Microsoft </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Source: Microsoft)</span></figcaption></figure><p>Kleynhans noted that priorities also play a factor. Sweating the minutia, the hiccups in an overall functional machine, may not be a focus for Microsoft when it has thousands of decisions to make on the larger aspects of Windows that keep the product functional and <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tight-chromebook-supply-due-windows-pcs-getting-priority-says-idc" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/tight-chromebook-supply-due-windows-pcs-getting-priority-says-idc">dominant in the marketplace</a>.</p><p>To make matters trickier for Microsoft and its customers, the changing times have complicated development. "Some of this was a lot easier back when Windows only updated with a major release once every three or four years," Kleynhans said. "It was safer for Microsoft to communicate directions and even details much further out. Today, things move too quickly, and in response, the OS gets updated at least once a year and through multiple routes."</p><p>That complication has been compounded by an even more timely obstacle: coronavirus. If the very nature of safely delivering one of the world's leading operating systems wasn't harrowing enough, it's not helped by a <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/budget-notebook-pc-demand-crashes-after-riding-pandemic-wave" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/budget-notebook-pc-demand-crashes-after-riding-pandemic-wave">worldwide pandemic</a> that's taken a toll on <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/us-government-chip-shortage-report-exposes-one-big-bottleneck-across-industry" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/us-government-chip-shortage-report-exposes-one-big-bottleneck-across-industry">just about every company's operations</a>.</p><p>"COVID has made it hard to test out some things, particularly many visual or workflow items," Kleynhans stated. "The insider program can only test things out once you actually do most of the work to develop something. An A/B test in an Insider build is a good final check, but it requires you actually build the code, not just a mock-up, and that is expensive. In the past Microsoft has made heavy use of focus groups with mock-ups, but COVID has complicated that. All of this makes scheduling and planning the finer details a little more difficult."</p><h2 id="always-room-to-improve">Always room to improve</h2><p>Kleynhans expressed that Microsoft can do a better job in the communication department, and work on developing better strategies than, for example, hiding valuable announcements in blog posts that may never be seen by the vast majority of relevant users. Kleynhans circled it back to the same point Blaber did, in that ultimately, a lack of cohesion behind the scenes makes for the current predicament.</p><p>"For most of the last decade, Windows has been split across multiple organizations within Microsoft meaning there really wasn't a single voice talking about the vision," he said. "I think that's wrong. It also wasn't given the same attention as some of the newer, more exciting technologies. Panos taking over most of the visible parts of Windows has helped, but it still feels like there is not one leader setting the direction for the product."</p><p>Kleynhans' comment about <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/panos-panay-has-been-promoted-microsofts-senior-leadership-team-elevating-windows-and-surface" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/panos-panay-has-been-promoted-microsofts-senior-leadership-team-elevating-windows-and-surface">Panos Panay's help</a> in the unification department once again aligns with Blaber's. Perhaps we are in the formative stages of seeing a more cohesive, consumer-friendly era of Windows come to pass, one where there's a dedicated vision and clear, concise messaging deliberately designed to avoid disappointing consumers.</p><p>With that being said, even if a gradual shift is in the works, Microsoft has proven it still has a long way to go. Time will tell whether it manages to put to rest the emojigates of yesterday and avoid even the most trivial of scandals going forward with the help of an all-encapsulating idea for the future of Windows.</p>

At the time, the company only showcased new "3D" designs, setting the expectation that this is what emoji were going to look like going forward in <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-11" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-11">Windows 11</a>, Teams, Office, and other Microsoft products and services. Unfortunately, when Microsoft began testing the new emoji in Windows 11 last month, it wasn't with the 3D designs Microsoft had promised.</p><p>This caused an <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/emojigate-people-are-mad-windows-11-wont-have-3d-emojis-after-all" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/emojigate-people-are-mad-windows-11-wont-have-3d-emojis-after-all">uproar in the tech space</a>, as people were genuinely excited to try them out, and some were even willing to upgrade to Windows 11 because of them. But, with the new emoji design now beginning to rollout globally on Windows 11, it appears we're only getting 2D versions of those 3D designs, which are quite a bit less exciting.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="AGBGJjb8YA8THNqSB6mRxD" name="" alt="Emoji Panel New Emoji Hero" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/AGBGJjb8YA8THNqSB6mRxD.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/AGBGJjb8YA8THNqSB6mRxD.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=""><span class="caption-text">Source: Microsoft </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Source: Microsoft)</span></figcaption></figure><p>Now, Microsoft spokespeople have said that the company lacked clarity about where the 3D emoji would actually be showing up. When they were announced, it came across as if they'd be showing up everywhere, but today the company has confirmed that 3D emoji will only appear inside apps that support them, not as the native emoji designs for the Windows 11 OS. This means you'll see 3D emoji designs in apps like Microsoft Teams and Skype, but the OS itself will use 2D emoji designs by default.</p><p>Microsoft has also confirmed that these new 2D emoji are only available for Windows 11, with seemingly no plans to bring updated emoji designs to Windows 10 customers.</p><p>Microsoft says the new 2D emoji designs <a href="https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2021/11/22/express-yourself-with-new-emoji-now-available-in-windows-11/">are beginning to rollout</a> to all Windows 11 customers now, and can be downloaded by manually initiating the November update preview release that should be waiting in Windows Update.</p>

People wanted concrete, unified answers across the board, and ideally 3D emoji to go along with those answers.</p><p>And just when the public uproar was starting to die down, on November 10, 2021, Microsoft reignited the flame with a <a href="https://twitter.com/Microsoft365/status/1458479580470202377">tweet of a 3D turtle</a>:</p><div class="see-more see-more--clipped"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet hawk-ignore" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">The turtle isn’t the only emoji getting a turtle-y awesome redesign. This isn't just a few redesigns or new inclusions; graphic designers have gone hard in the paint with 1,888 total emoji made in a modern aesthetic.</p><p>A lot of thought went into these emoji, as evidenced by <a href="https://medium.com/microsoft-design/emotionality-at-work-398182387adc">Microsoft's announcement post</a> on the subject. For example, head emoji have been deliberately changed not to be perfect circles. As told by the post, "people aren't perfect, so why should our graphical representations be?"</p><p>However, the new emoji also pay less attention to reality, depending on the category. Take, for example, the redesigned crab. It no longer tries to be realistic. Instead, it utilizes vibrant colors and "chunky, graphic shapes" to give itself more personality, all via circular shapes and lush hues.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="vBRH9pRomQ8SXmxnitheSQ" name="" alt="Clipp" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/vBRH9pRomQ8SXmxnitheSQ.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/vBRH9pRomQ8SXmxnitheSQ.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/vBRH9pRomQ8SXmxnitheSQ.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=""><span class="caption-text">Source: Microsoft </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Source: Microsoft)</span></figcaption></figure><p>And the emoji redesigns also have a soft spot for nostalgia, hence Clippy's new job as the dedicated paperclip depiction.</p><p>The emoji are live in Flipgrid right now and will find their way to Windows and <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-teams-20-way-and-we-just-got-closer-look-it" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-teams-20-way-and-we-just-got-closer-look-it">Teams</a> by holiday season 2021. They'll come to Outlook, Yammer, and other services in 2022.</p><p>Microsoft's announcement post also notes the Fluent aesthetic is taking over Microsoft 365 in ways that extend far beyond just emoji. Backgrounds, themes, illustrations, and more are on the docket for playing a part in changing Microsoft's aesthetic. However, until the aesthetic collage is complete, we can be content with some new goofy faces to pester colleagues with.</p>

These emoji symbols will be coming to most platforms in the second half of 2020. Not every device will have all 117 symbols. Most software developers pick about half from the list to add to their various apps and operating systems.</p><p>New symbols range from new facial expressions, like a smiling face with a tear (I feel this way often), to body parts, like an anatomical heart and lungs, to animals, like a black cat, bison, mammoth, beaver, polar bear, and the dodo bird. There are a few new food and drink options, like blueberries, olive, bell pepper, flatbread, tamale, fondue, and bubble tea.</p><p>I can't wait to see how people get indignant over what a tamale is supposed to look like.</p><p>What's your favorite new emoji for 2020?</p><div class="youtube-video" data-nosnippet ><div class="video-aspect-box"><iframe data-lazy-priority="low" data-lazy-src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/cxRDjci6POs" allowfullscreen></iframe></div></div>

<h2 id="what-you-need-to-know-8">What you need to know</h2><ul><li>A new blog post sheds light on how emojis are made for Windows 10.</li><li>While emojis are on most platforms, the look of specific emojis are built for each OS.</li><li>Emojis aren't added to Windows 10 until they've gone through a complex design process.</li></ul><p>It's <a href="https://worldemojiday.com/">World Emoji Day</a>, and a Microsoft employee has shed light on how emojis are designed for Windows 10. Arthur Canales wrote a post for <a href="https://medium.com/microsoft-design/inside-the-microsoft-emoji-design-studio-b150813839f5">Medium</a> that breaks down the design and implementation process for getting emojis onto Windows 10. While the post doesn't contain much new information, it does lay out the process and shares insights on emoji design.</p><p>Whenever an emoji idea is proposed, the <a href="https://home.unicode.org/">Unicode Consortium</a> decides if it's worth adding. The Unicode Consortium is a nonprofit organization that includes tech companies and other organizations that aim to maintain consistency for writing systems across platforms. The consortium does a lot more than deal with emojis, but they are the ones that approve the addition of new ones.</p><p>Once the Unicode Consortium decides to add an emoji, developers of different operating systems have to design specific emojis to show up on their platforms. Canales points out that Microsoft uses vector-based font glyphs for their emojis. This allows them to scale well and work as a font.</p><p>Judy Safran-Aasen, a program manager at Microsoft, explains that designing emojis presents specific challenges because of their size. She explained, "For example, many emoji faces have only minor differences between them. In certain instances, the design will need to exaggerate certain features to make them distinct."</p><p>Once an emoji has an approved design, it rolls out in the next Windows release. Generally speaking, Windows 10 supports emojis well. The touch keyboard on the OS has an emoji panel, and you can access and search emojis using the Windows key + period shortcut or use Windows key + semicolon if you'd like to insert an emoji using a keyboard.</p><h2 id="portable-and-affordable-power-accessories-we-love">Portable (and affordable) power accessories we love</h2><p>Each and every one of these charging gadgets will keep your favorite gear and gadgets going for longer, and none of them costs more than $30.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="AqaufEqbpYLk79XnpYrAEN" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/AqaufEqbpYLk79XnpYrAEN.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/AqaufEqbpYLk79XnpYrAEN.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div></figure><p><strong><a href="https://www.kqzyfj.com/click-100048247-12578053?sid=UUwpUdUtUdellchargingaccessories&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dell.com%2Fen-us%2Fshop%2Fvisiontek-power-bank-8000-mah-2-a-2-output-connectors-usb-on-cable-micro-usb%2Fapd%2Fa9776343%2Fpc-accessories%29" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" class="speciallink">VisionTek 8,000 mAh micro-USB power bank</a> <span>($13 at Dell)</span></strong></p><p>This compact dual-output powerbank can speedily recharge any and all your devices, thanks to a two-amp "fast charge feature," using its micro-USB out port. Not wanting to be left out, Microsoft this week said that it will change its pistol emoji to "reflect our values and the feedback we've received." The new emoji more closely resembles a water gun than an actual gun.</p><p>Apple was the first to make a change to its gun emoji in 2016, and other tech companies have followed suit to less-realistic depictions following high-profile shootings in recent years. It's unclear when the new emoji will roll out to Windows users, but it wouldn't be surprising to see it arrive alongside the spring feature update or Redstone 5 later this year.</p><div class="see-more see-more--clipped"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet hawk-ignore" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">We are in the process of evolving our emojis to reflect our values and the feedback we've received. <p>The <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/fall-creators-update" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/fall-creators-update">Windows 10 Fall Creators Update</a> includes a brand new <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/5-features-were-excited-about-windows-10-fall-creators-update" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/5-features-were-excited-about-windows-10-fall-creators-update">emoji picker</a>, which gives keyboard and mice users easy access to the large emoji catalog available in Windows 10. Unfortunately, Microsoft made the decision to disable the picker on devices that aren't running an en-U.S. version of Windows 10, which sucks. Lucky, it turns out there's a way to enable it on Windows 10 devices that aren't running an en-U.S. install.</p><p>This workaround only works on certain non-U.S. versions of Windows 10, so you'll have to give it a go and let us know in the comments if it works for you. We can confirm this works on en-GB and nl-NL installations. It will boil down to your keyboard layout more than anything, as the key-combination to enable the emoji picker might not work on your keyboard.</p><p>It's also worth noting that enabling the picker on non-US devices will mean that translations are wrong, and as such the search function within the emoji picker doesn't work. You can still use the picker to find emoji manually, however, which is more than fine for most.</p><h2 id="open-the-windows-registry">Open the Windows Registry</h2><p>First, you need to open the Windows Registry to be able to edit the values necessary to enable the emoji picker on your device.</p><ol start="1"><li>Right-click on the <strong>Windows Start button</strong>.</li></ol><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="jZou3WxNLNN2CcXEbWXDwF" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/jZou3WxNLNN2CcXEbWXDwF.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/jZou3WxNLNN2CcXEbWXDwF.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div></figure><ol start="2"><li>Select <strong>Run</strong>.</li><li>In the Run dialog box, type <strong>"regedit."</strong></li></ol><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="k7jGc2YGifzbEDrPcwvyz3" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/k7jGc2YGifzbEDrPcwvyz3.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/k7jGc2YGifzbEDrPcwvyz3.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div></figure><ol start="4"><li>Select <strong>OK</strong>.</li></ol><h2 id="enable-the-emoji-picker">Enable the emoji picker</h2><p>Now that you're in the Windows Registry, you need to navigate to the folder that allows you to enable the emoji picker on your device.</p><ol start="1"><li>Navigate to:<code>Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Input\Settings</code></li><li>In the Settings folder, right click and select <strong>"New > DWORD (32-bit) value."</strong></li></ol><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="vVHxtqQkeoQKUTEabEKJU8" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/vVHxtqQkeoQKUTEabEKJU8.png" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/vVHxtqQkeoQKUTEabEKJU8.png" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div></figure><ol start="3"><li>Name the DWORD, "EnableExpressiveInputShellHotkey"</li></ol><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="Lz3gqX4y3fWWSPupjGXFTG" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Lz3gqX4y3fWWSPupjGXFTG.png" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Lz3gqX4y3fWWSPupjGXFTG.png" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div></figure><ol start="4"><li>Double-click the newly created DWORD.</li><li>Set its "Value data" to 1.</li></ol><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="W62TZxApGDRoNiwRp3P7zY" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/W62TZxApGDRoNiwRp3P7zY.png" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/W62TZxApGDRoNiwRp3P7zY.png" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div></figure><ol start="6"><li>Select <strong>OK</strong>.</li><li>Restart your computer.</li></ol><p>And there you have it. A new report says that the company has added over 52,000 new emojis, along with other new features.</p><p><a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/diverse-emoji-families-come-to-windows/"><em>Emojipedia</em></a> says this huge number of new emoji is due to the massive number of different family combinations that are now possible, including single parent family, interracial families, and couples and ones that have a baby:</p><div><blockquote><p>Single parent and interracial families have been frequently requested of Emojipedia, yet vendors have been reluctant to support this until now. These emojis have been technically possible for quite some time using Emoji ZWJ Sequences, which is how existing family emojis are already created1. In short, this joins together each family member to create a new emoji.</p></blockquote></div><p>All the emojis in the Anniversary Update have been redesigned for a new and crisper art look. In addition, it adds 72 new all-new emojis included as part of the Unicode 9.0 release.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="cQq8kuWr7EqXtmmJgoSNae" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/cQq8kuWr7EqXtmmJgoSNae.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/cQq8kuWr7EqXtmmJgoSNae.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div></figure><p>Oh, and versions of Windows 10's (unofficial) mascot, NinjaCat, are included in the new Windows 10 Anniversary Update, along with some variants:</p><div><blockquote><p>Now for the first time Ninja Cat becomes an emoji which is exclusive to Windows. In fact, in addition to 7,500 new characters, Unicode 9.0 has added a total of 72 new emoji to the standard. New additions include emoji ranging from an avocado and a clown to animals like a gorilla and bat. In the graphic below, put together by the folks at <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/unicode-9-0-released-with-72-new-emojis/">Emojipedia</a>, you can take a look at all 72 new emoji.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="mxMUQiias7bhbSVudr6fgk" name="" alt="Unicode 9.0 is official with 72 new emoji" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/mxMUQiias7bhbSVudr6fgk.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/mxMUQiias7bhbSVudr6fgk.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div></figure><p>In addition to the new emoji, Unicode 9.0 brings character support for "lesser-used languages" that include:</p><ul><li>Osage, a Native American language</li><li>Nepal Bhasa, a language of Nepal</li><li>Fulani and other African languages</li><li>The Bravanese dialect of Swahili, used in Somalia</li><li>The Warsh orthography for Arabic, used in North and West Africa</li><li>Tangut, a major historic script of China</li></ul><p>For much more, you can check out the different variations of each new emoji glyph added in Unicode 9 <a href="http://www.unicode.org/emoji/charts/emoji-released.html">at the Unicode website</a>. And keep in mind that these have only been finalized as part of the Unicode 9.0 standard, and you'll have to wait until Microsoft includes the latest batch of additions in an update to check them out.</p>

<p>Microsoft's recent decision to include middle-finger emoji in <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-10" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-10">Windows 10</a> appears to be reverberating in pop culture. We covered <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-10-emoji-middle-finger" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-10-emoji-middle-finger">the story on Monday</a>, and it is now making the rounds on US TV.</p><p>Last night, on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live, the host took to showing off and talking about the new somewhat offensive – yet hilarious – symbols to the crowd. The punchline, of course, was those watching on TV could not see them due to 'standards and practices' making the show blur them out.</p><div class="youtube-video" data-nosnippet ><div class="video-aspect-box"><iframe data-lazy-priority="low" data-lazy-src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/0ob4wgj22c4" allowfullscreen></iframe></div></div><p>The <em>other</em> joke though was not lost on Kimmel either, which is if you flip the fingers upside down, they look like ice cream bars, which <em>can</em> be shown on TV.</p><p>In the end, such bits of comedy are certainly irrelevant to the success (or failure) of Windows 10. However, seeing as Microsoft is the only company to let these emoji onto to its platform it is something fun to talk about. That is a good thing.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="tbtCvhZn4SREwJzbh8zeEg" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/tbtCvhZn4SREwJzbh8zeEg.png" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/tbtCvhZn4SREwJzbh8zeEg.png" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div></figure><p>It may seem silly, but it is little stuff like this that can help drive awareness and a certain hipness to Windows 10. Throw in Cortana, Minecraft, Surface 3, and HoloLens and all of a sudden, Microsoft is no longer your parents' OS, but something the kids can get behind.</p><p>Anyway, watch the 90-second clip and have a laugh (or not). We did.</p><p>Source: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ob4wgj22c4">YouTube</a>; <em>Thanks, Rokibul H., for the tip!</em></p>

<p>A new proposal drafted by the Unicode Consortium would introduce more racial diversity into the popular <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/emoji" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/emoji">emoji</a> characters used in messages on smartphones. The proposal, edited by Google's Mark Davis and Apple's Peter Edberg, would bring skin tones, based on the Fitzpatrick scale for dermatology, to emoji characters in five hues ranging from a pale creme to a dark brown.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="zZeRTztuoSqVKFi5FivHFF" name="" alt="Proposed emoji changes could bring racial diversity" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/zZeRTztuoSqVKFi5FivHFF.png" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/zZeRTztuoSqVKFi5FivHFF.png" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div></figure><p>To use the new emoji, users would select the emoji person or character and then add a tone. On compatible phones, a single emoji image or glyph would be show up. On phones that do not support the new font, users will likely see a standard emoji glyph and then a color swatch next to it indicating the skin tone.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="5u3urQMCEJBEZLoCGJBFU4" name="" alt="Proposed emoji changes could bring racial diversity" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/5u3urQMCEJBEZLoCGJBFU4.png" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/5u3urQMCEJBEZLoCGJBFU4.png" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div></figure><p>The skin tone modifiers would work on all people-related characters, including those that depict couples. A possibility for emoji with couples would be to enter in the skin tone value for each person separately.</p><p>Right now, the proposal is still a draft and there is no timeline for implementation so we don't know when it will reach your phones.</p><p>Source: <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/11/04/proposed-changes-to-emoji-standard-would-allow-for-more-diversity-increased-selection-of-skin-tones/?ncid=rss">TechCrunch</a></p>

Bing can now also recognize when an emoji is being used in place of a work. For example, adding in the emoji symbols for "Bride" and "Shower" in Bing will now allow users to create search strings based on "Bridal Shower" rather than having to type out those two words.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="8QqfU5h6dsE65CVCCLbxfd" name="" alt="bing emoji" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/8QqfU5h6dsE65CVCCLbxfd.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/8QqfU5h6dsE65CVCCLbxfd.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div></figure><p>The official Bing blog also points out some other users for the emoji search feature such as discovering the meaning of the "Konami code" just by using a few characters.</p><p>Source: <a href="https://blogs.bing.com/search/2014/10/27/do-you-speak-emoji-bing-does">Microsoft</a></p>

They help show how you feel. If you’re a <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/skype" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/skype">Skype</a> user, then there new emoticons you might want to start using. They’ve introduced five new “hidden heroes” emoticons based on characters from the upcoming blockbuster film, Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.</p><p>The five new, limited edition emoticons, include Captain America, the mysterious Winter Soldier, Nick Fury and Black Widow. These emoticons are “hiding” within Skype.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="7bff3XzTYz4kkQucAtTBzg" name="" alt="Winter Soldier" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7bff3XzTYz4kkQucAtTBzg.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7bff3XzTYz4kkQucAtTBzg.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7bff3XzTYz4kkQucAtTBzg.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div></figure><p>To add the new emoticons to your IM chats, try typing in (captain) (bucky) (nickfury) or (blackwidow) to reveal these limited edition characters. You'll need the very latest version of Skype, where they should be ready to deploy from March 13th. The emoticons will be available to different platforms at different times, so if you can't use them right away, you may have to wait a little bit longer.</p><p>We have mentioned five emoticons, but only revealed four characters. Who’s the fifth character? You’ll have to unlock it by answering questions on characters from the movie. Visit Skype’s Hero Hub to answer the questions.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="NoUdFYZ6YHVvmPJ2vQNmBL" name="" alt="Black Widow" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NoUdFYZ6YHVvmPJ2vQNmBL.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NoUdFYZ6YHVvmPJ2vQNmBL.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NoUdFYZ6YHVvmPJ2vQNmBL.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div></figure><p>We don’t want to spoil the fun for you, but the first hint is a GPS coordinate. Just type it in Bing to find the answer to the first question. There are three questions in total.</p><p>While this is obviously a cross-promotion with the upcoming movie, Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a recent survey shows that many Skype users are going to enjoy the new emoticons. The survey had 2,058 respondents within the United States and United Kingdom, revealing 57% of them want new emoticons based on comic book characters. <p>Here's a neat little trick to get your on your way to customising your Start screen with Nokia's App Folders solution. The app was recently published to the Windows Phone Store and just like you could with contacts, you're able to copy and paste emoticons from the SMS text box to App Folder titles to add some personality. Putting together a games folder, why not add a controller? </p><p>It's a super cool effect and only takes seconds to do. The only thing worth remembering is you're not required to be running the Lumia Black update to have App Folders installed from the store. Below shows a quick example of how it all works. On the left you have the insides of a folder with apps listed, while on the right you have the folder tile itself (notice the emoticon on both screens?).</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="QNdLTPTNCdHUNABtM9s8Xk" name="" alt="App Folder SMS Icons" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/QNdLTPTNCdHUNABtM9s8Xk.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/QNdLTPTNCdHUNABtM9s8Xk.jpg" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div></figure><p>If that weren't enough for you to be stoked for the app, check out our Sam giving a quick demo of the app itself:</p><iframe frameborder="0" height="383" width="680" data-lazy-priority="low" data-lazy-src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CKEg6kjcoIA"></iframe><p>You can <a href="http://www.windowsphone.com/s?appid=7d2e7de3-95e7-4143-8a9d-aedf8c3f901e">grab App Folder</a> from the Windows Phone Store. All you need to do is start a text message and add the emoticon of your choice.</p><p>From there, highlight and copy that emoticon. Leave the text message and go to your Peoples Hub, find the contact and choose to edit the name. Add a space at the end of the last name and paste the emoticon.  It's a neat way to add a little customization to your contacts.</p><p><strong>Edit:</strong> As noted in comments by <em>hopmedic</em>, to prevent it from breaking voice dialling, put the emoticons in the last name field, but put a hyphen after the last name, and then the emoticons.</p><p><em>Thanks, danclyons, for the tip!</em></p>

<p><strong>Update:</strong> <em>Ah, as it turns out what is shown above is actually an app called Emotiboard (found here).  In other words, false alarm! Sorry folks.</em></p><p>It looks like Nokia is getting frisky as they're <strike>showing a glimpse of the Lumia 800 evidently with the upcoming <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows-phone-78" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/tag/windows-phone-78">Windows Phone 7.8</a> upgrade</strike>. The image above comes via <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151097581552397&set=a.338008237396.161268.36922302396&type=1&relevant_count=1">their Facebook page</a> and while it does not mention 7.8 directly it does show some new emoticons off. Those emoticons are not found in current 7.5 builds but they are found in Windows Phone 8 as we demonstrated in <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/new-emoticons-windows-phone-8" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/new-emoticons-windows-phone-8">our video tour two weeks ago</a>.</p><p>In addition, you can clearly see that button presses <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/keyboard-windows-phone-8-makes-use-users-accent-choice" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/keyboard-windows-phone-8-makes-use-users-accent-choice">now reflect the current Accent color</a>, a small touch that helps brighten the typing experience on Windows Phone. That's big news as it shows that Windows Phone 7.8 is more than just a new Start Screen as it will presumably include a lot of smaller enhancements, like the new emoticon system (which surprisingly is not in color).</p><p>Watch the video below to see the Windows Phone 8 emoticons in action. <em>Thanks, mcmaui, for the tip!</em></p><iframe frameborder="0" height="383" width="680" data-lazy-priority="low" data-lazy-src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/mD3dC_P1yVI"></iframe>

Previously, Windows Phone allowed you to easily send some basic smileys and if you wanted some more advanced symbols, you had to <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/exclusive-complete-windows-phone-emoji-list" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/exclusive-complete-windows-phone-emoji-list">dig out some codes</a> or use <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/your-texting-companion-app-messaging-emoticons" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/your-texting-companion-app-messaging-emoticons">a 3rd party app</a>.</p><p>This time around, Microsoft put in a selector at the bottom with visible choices for each symbol. You even have categories like faces, food, symbols and more. If you use the same symbols repeatedly, they will show up in a frequently used area for quick access the next time you message. </p><p>We should also point out that they work in all apps. We used them in Kik messenger with no issues (they just don't have color). All in all, it's these small changes that make Windows Phone 8 quite an improvement.</p>

Aside from marring your otherwise beautiful Nokia Lumia phone by taping <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/exclusive-complete-windows-phone-emoji-list" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/exclusive-complete-windows-phone-emoji-list">our foldable guide</a> onto the back, there is no good way to remember these things. Cue <em>Messaging Emoticons</em>.</p><p><a href="http://windowsphone.com/s?appId=5dbf9370-79a3-41da-8aad-fe3a7bb29a86" target="_blank"><em>Messaging Emoticons</em></a> is a <strong>completely free</strong> app written by Windows Phone enthusiast Corey Blakeborough that offers handy access to the otherwise volumous selection of emotions on Windows Phone. It's simple to use too: You fire up the app, type out the text you wish to adorn, and tap on the emoticon(s) you wish to use. Or you can switch to the copy mode -- via the icons at the top of the app -- to reveal a scrolling list of all the emoticons available on Windows Phone. Then you can simply mash the emoticon you wish to use and it'll be magically transferred to the clipboard, ready for your use in another app.</p><p>For those who need <i>even more </i>hand holding, the app also features favorites, filters and even pinned tile support! Filters show only emoticons that pertain to a certain category (incl. a favorites category in which you can add to). For example, when we text <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/monday-brief-google-wallet-issues-bb-devcon-europe-potential-ipad-3-dates-and-more" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/monday-brief-google-wallet-issues-bb-devcon-europe-potential-ipad-3-dates-and-more">Ashley Esqueda</a> we stick to Animals and Smilies, while for <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/user/4213" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/user/4213">Daniel Rubino</a> we almost exclusively use those listed in Mad. And for super quick access, you can pin a hard-to-type emoticon on your home screen.</p><p>(y)(y), Corey. <p>Back in November, Windows Phone team blogger Michael Stroh teased users with some <a href="https://blogs.windows.com/">cheat</a> <a href="https://blogs.windows.com/">sheets</a> to many of the emoticons or <em>emoji</em> (Japanese) built right into the Windows Phone platform. He didn't share them all, though. Not content with waiting around for more blog posts, we decided to dig through the operating system, not stopping until we found the rare and beautiful emoji. And found them we did.</p><p>WPCentral is proud to present <a href="https://www.windowscentral.com/sites/wpcentral.com/files/postimages/20387/wpcentral_the_complete_list_of_emoji.png" data-original-url="https://www.windowscentral.com/sites/wpcentral.com/files/postimages/20387/wpcentral_the_complete_list_of_emoji.png">the complete list of emoji present in Windows Phone 7.5 ("Mango")</a>.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="g7VWyfZi8rpmTr3WvpY5gD" name="" alt="The Complete List of Windows Phone 7.5 Emoji, brought to you by WPCentral" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/g7VWyfZi8rpmTr3WvpY5gD.png" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/g7VWyfZi8rpmTr3WvpY5gD.png" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/g7VWyfZi8rpmTr3WvpY5gD.png' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div></figure>

<p>By now, if you have ever sent a text message on Windows Phone, you would have noticed that a simple :-) gets turned into a full on smiley face on the phone. It's not groundbreaking but shows that Microsoft is paying attention to detail and it certainly enhances the experience.</p><p>Every once in awhile we get a "tip" on someone finding a new "emoji" (we still call 'em emoticons) while texting. Well, Microsoft has thrown together a whole sheet of the most commonly used ones. Yes, there are <em>even more to be found</em>, which is crazy.</p><p>While these are super awesome, we're hard pressed to imagine we're going to memorize them, let alone be able to bang 'em out quickly in a text message from memory. But we like a challenge! (Side note: we have conjured up "vampire bat" on occasion, which was...<em>odd</em>).</p><p>Source: <a href="https://blogs.windows.com/">Windows Phone Blog</a></p>
