Regrettably, they come with a similar price tag due to their competition with Apple regarding build quality and design. Nonetheless, if you haven't experienced a Surface device yet, I believe the reliability and premium feel make the price worthwhile. It's a great time to jump into the Surface ecosystem and prepare for the upcoming ARM-powered Surface devices we covered.

One of the first things I did when I started here at Windows Central was pick up a Surface Book 3, which completely spoiled me when it comes to typing. When I have to switch back to a different laptop for my other work, I find myself completely messing up my typing as the other laptop has inferior pressure and placement of the keys. Honestly, I can't use anything besides my Surface to type long-form text because of how great the keyboard feels.

I understand the Surface products are not what we can consider a bargain, but for the premium build quality and aesthetics they achieve, it makes sense why the price tag can be so hefty. If these deals above are still out of reach for your budget, don't forget to check out Microsoft's somewhat hidden refurbished site for some deals.

The savings get even sweeter with refurbished devices. They might have some previous use, but they've been thoroughly tested, had any necessary parts swapped out, and are repackaged to look as good as new. I think going for a refurbished device is a smart move, but either way, you're in for some serious savings.

Unfortunately, because they are competing with Apple in build quality and overall design, they are also priced similarly. That being said, if you haven't had the pleasure of using a Surface device, the reliability and premium feel justify the price, in my opinion.

Whether you're looking to upgrade yourself and get a new Surface tablet, laptop, or Studio, or you have somebody in your life who loves Microsoft products and has been in dire need of a tablet or laptop upgrade, the sale going on at Microsoft means it is a great time to treat yourself or them and jump into the Surface experience. I personally picked up a Surface Book 3 when I started here at Windows Central, and I can't use anything else to type with because of how great the keyboard feels.

If the prices are still too steep for your budget even after the discounts, don't forget to check out Microsoft's somewhat hidden refurbished site for some deals. The savings are even better; the device might just be used slightly but is tested, had parts replaced (if needed), and repackaged just like it was new. In my opinion, it is worth getting a refurbished device over a new one, but either way, there are significant savings to be had.

The device has a wide range of ports for connecting accessories and peripherals. It can connect to up to two 4K monitors at once at 60Hz. It also extends Thunderbolt 4 support to the Surface Pro 9, Surface Laptop 5, and Surface Laptop Studio. Those devices already work with Thunderbolt 4, but now that type of connectivity is available through a Surface Dock.

The dock previously leaked in a found listing on eBay, which ruined Microsoft's announcement by a day.

The Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock connects through USB-C with Thunderbolt 4 rather than Microsoft's proprietary Surface Connect port. PCs connected to the dock can extend across up to two 4K monitors at 60Hz. The dock also delivers 96W of power plus extra power for accessories (165W total).

Regarding ports, the Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock has three USB-C ports, three USB-A ports, a 3.5mm audio jack, a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port, and a security lock slot. The dock has front and rear-facing ports with tactile indicators that make them easier to find.

Several IT and commercial-focused features are available with the Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock such as Firmware Update through Windows Update, Wake on LAN from Modern Standby, and MAC Address Passthrough‎. Surface Enterprise Management Mode (SEMM).

We'll review the dock in the coming weeks and find out if it makes our best Thunderbolt 4 hubs and docking stations list.

Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock | $300 at Microsoft

This new dock from Microsoft has a plethora of ports, delivers up to 96W of power to PCs, and brings Thunderbolt 4 connectivity to the Surface Dock lineup.

Sean was there for the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and has followed closely as AI has been integrated into everything from smartphones to making videos.Between product announcements, Sean scours through patents and studies leaks to find out what’s on the way in the world of tech.</p><p>Sean’s journey into tech kicked off with the Lumia 930, which placed him squarely in the Microsoft ecosystem. Dating back to the days of Windows Phone, Sean has long been intrigued by anything that turns the tech world on its head. If it folds, flips, or has multiple screens, Sean wants to get his hands on it.</p><p>Over the last decade, Sean covered the launches of Windows 10, Windows 11, and hundreds of devices made by Microsoft, Google, Meta, Dell, Lenovo, Razer, and many other companies. Finding third-party apps out of necessity led Sean to build relationships with app developers. Those relationships sparked a career full of app reviews and behind-the-scenes looks at development.</p><p>Outside of writing, Sean coaches American football. The Surface Pro 9 starts at $999 for Intel models and $1,299 for ARM variants. The Surface Laptop 5 comes in two size options. The 13.5-inch model starts at $999, and the 15-inch model starts at $1,299.

Microsoft merged the Surface Pro X lineup into the general Surface Pro family with the launch of the Surface Pro 9. What that means is that you can order a Surface Pro 9 with either an ARM CPU or an Intel processor.

If you go with an Intel chip, your Surface Pro 9 will have a 12th-gen U-series CPU. That range of processors has ten cores and delivers up to 50% better performance than Intel's 11th-gen chips. The Pro 9 supports dynamic refresh rate, which takes full advantage of the 2-in-1's 120Hz display.

ARM models of the Pro 9 have Microsoft's SQ3 SoC, which is a customized version of the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3. That chip has 5G connectivity built-in, making the ARM-powered Surface Pro 9 the only Pro 9 with 5G support.

The SQ3 chip also has a neural processing unit (NPU) built in. That NPU powers AI effects like native background blur, eye contact, automatic framing, enhanced voice clarity, and voice focus. Notably, the Intel-powered Surface Pro 9 does not have that NPU.

The Surface Laptop 5 runs on 12th-gen Intel U-series chips as well.
Microsoft recently announced its Surface Pro 9 and Surface Laptop 5 alongside several other devices. If you'd like to add a layer of protection to your new Surface or personalize it a bit, dbrand has good news for you. Skins are now available from dbrand for the Surface Pro 9 and Surface Laptop 5. We're still holding out for a gigantic skin for the Surface Studio 2+.

Skins start at $22.95 for the Surface Pro 9 and $24.95 for the Surface Laptop 5. Pricing varies quite a bit depending on the material and pattern that you choose.

There have been dbrand skins for the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop lineups for years, but the well-known skin designer has added some new patterns to its library. Glitch, Arctic, and Navy camo skins are now available, along with fan favorites such as matte black and marble.

You can also get leather skins in three colors: Real Tan, Real Brown, and Real Black. The emphasis here is on "skin" and "real," as dbrand highlights that the skins are made of actual leather. "Full-grain Tan Leather. Cows died for this," reads the listing. That's a pro for some shoppers and a con for others, but it's an important factor regardless of where you sit.

Our Executive Editor Daniel Rubino went hands-on with dbrand's Surface Pro 8 leather skins last year. Notably, the 13.5-inch version can be configured with both Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs, with the 15-inch variant only featuring Core i7 options.

Both models of the Surface Laptop 5 are available to preorder now, with the device expected to begin shipping on October 25, 2022. The price of the 13.5-inch model starts at $999, while the cost of the larger 15-inch one begins at $1,299.

Why you should buy the Surface Laptop 5 13.5

The 13.5-inch variant of the Surface Laptop 5 will be ideal for folks that want something as affordable as possible, as it's considerably less expensive than the 15-inch model. While you'll have to settle for Core i5 12th Gen chips instead of Core i7 ones if you want to save the most money, we expect that they'll still offer great performance for general tasks and will be excellent for day-to-day use.

You should also opt for this model if you're looking for something compact. The smaller size of the display and chassis means that the 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 5 will be easier to slip into small laptop bags and backpacks. It's also a full half-pound lighter, too, which is a benefit worth considering if you plan on carrying the laptop with you all day.

Microsoft also claims that the 13.5-inch variant will have a slightly better battery life of 18 hours. This is far from being a major step up from the 15-inch version's estimated 17-hour runtime, but if you often spend a lot of time away from the charging cord, every bit of extra juice helps.

Why you should buy the Surface Laptop 5 15

If you don't mind paying a little extra for it, the 15-inch Surface Laptop 5 will be an excellent choice for people that want a larger display. Many often find larger screens easier to multitask and complete work with, as they give you more real estate to use. Bigger panels are also typically considered ideal for watching movies and TV or playing games (Xbox Cloud Gaming would pair perfectly with the Surface Laptop 5). If you plan on consuming a lot of entertainment media with your new laptop, going with the 15-inch unit may be the right call.

You may also prefer to use the larger keyboards found on 15-inch devices, especially if you have big hands. If you've struggled to type accurately using smaller keyboards in the past, you'll most likely be better off with the bigger Surface Laptop 5.

Ultimately, regardless of which Surface Laptop 5 you decide to buy, you'll end up with what is expected to be one of the best Windows laptops of 2022. Between its quality specs and great new features, the Surface Laptop 5 is poised to please.

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:56.26%';>

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5

Available in the same 13.5- and 15-inch screen sizes as its predecessor, the Surface Laptop 5 gets some notable, but iterative, updates this year, including a better display with DolbyVision IQ support, faster processing power under the hood, and new colorway options.

And unlike most laptops on the market today, Microsoft is again sticking to the same 3:2 screen aspect ratio – instead of the usual 16:9 or 16:10 displays – making the Surface Laptop 5 more suited for productivity. The screen ratio means that videos will continue to be letterboxed with black bars at the top and bottom of the display for consuming movies.

The biggest change this year will be under the hood, where you’ll get a new U-series 12th Gen Intel processor, an upgrade from the 11th Gen silicon on the prior generation model. With the launch of 12th Gen mobile, Intel promised a multi-threaded performance bump of 30% compared to the prior 11th Gen CPU. Unfortunately, as Intel doesn’t have 13th Gen mobile processors available yet, the Surface Laptop 5 won’t launch with Intel’s newest CPU.

Another big change for the series is that Microsoft appears to be streamlining its configurations. At least at launch, Intel will be the sole CPU provider for the Surface Laptop 5, which means that unlike the fourth generation models, we won’t see any AMD Ryzen configurations. All builds of the Surface Laptop 5, across the 13.5- and 15-inch display sizes, are built on Intel’s Evo platform, which promises sustained performance, long battery life, and a thin-and-light form factor for mobile use.

The 13.5-inch models come with either an Intel Core i5-1235U or Core i7-1255U processor, while the larger 15-inch model come with Intel’s 12th Gen Core i7-1255U. Commercial configurations of the Surface Laptop 5 13.5-inch ship with Intel’s Core i5-1245U or Core i7-1265U mobile processor, while the larger Surface Laptop 5 15-inch commercial variant utilize Intel’s Core i7-1265U silicon. And like Intel configurations from the prior generation, the Surface Laptop 5 will rely solely on integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics – no discrete configuration will be available.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 versus Surface Laptop 4 Consumer Comparison

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4

OS

Windows 11 Home

Windows 10 Home with free upgrade to Windows 11

Processor

Intel 12th Gen Core i5, Core i7

Intel 11th Gen Core i5, Core i7

AMD Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7

RAM

8GB, 16GB, 32GB LPDDR5x

8GB, 16GB, 32GB LPDDR4x

Graphics

Integrated Intel Iris Xe

Integrated Intel Iris Xe

Storage (removable SSD)

256GB, 512GB, 1TB SSD

256GB, 512GB, 1TB SSD

Display

13.5-inch: 2256 x 1504 PixelSense Display, 3:2 Aspect Ratio, Surface Pen enabled, DolbyVision IQ

13.5-inch: 2256 x 1504 PixelSense Display, 3:2 Aspect Ratio, Surface Pen enabled

15-inch: 2496 x 1664 PixelSense Display, 3:2 Aspect Ratio, Surface Pen enabled, DolbyVision IQ

15-inch: 2496 x 1664 PixelSense Display, 3:2 Aspect Ratio, Surface Pen enabled

Pen support

Yes, optional Surface Pen

Yes, optional Surface Pen

Ports

Thunderbolt 4 over USB-C, USB A 3.2, 3.5mm headphone jack, Surface Connect

USB-C, USB-A, 3.5mm headphone jack, Surface Connect

Audio

Dolby Atmos with dual far-field studio microphones

Dolby Atmos

Wireless

W-Fi 6 802.11ax, Bluetooth 5.1

Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax, Bluetooth 5.0

Camera

720p HD webcam with Windows Hello

720p HD webcam with Windows Hello

Security

Windows Hello Face Authentication

Windows Hello Face Authentication

Dimensions

13.5-inch: 12.1 inch (308 mm) X 8.8 inch (223 mm) X .57 inch (14.5 mm)

13.5-inch: 12.1 inch (308 mm) X 8.8 inch (223 mm) X .57 inch (14.5 mm)

15-inch: 13.4 inch (340 mm) X 9.6 inch (244 mm) X .58 inch (14.7 mm)

15-inch: 13.4 inch (340 mm) X 9.6 inch (244 mm) X .58 inch (14.7 mm)

Weight

13.5-inch: Fabric 2.80 lbs (1,272 g) or Metal 2.86 lbs (1,297 g)

13.5-inch: Fabric 2.79 lbs (1,265 g) or Metal 2.84 lbs (1,288 g)

15-inch: 3.44 lbs (1,560 g)

15-inch: 3.40 lbs (1,542 g)

Color

13.5-inch: Platinum with Alcantara, Safe, Matte Black, Sandstone

13.5-inch: Platinum with Alcantara, Ice Blue with Alcantara, Matte Black with metal, Sandstone with metal

15-inch: Platinum with metal, Matte Black with metal

15-inch: Platinum with metal, Matte Black with metal

Battery life

13.5-inch: Up to 18 hours

13.5-inch: Up to 19 hours with AMD, up to 17 hours with Intel

15-inch: Up to 17 hours

15-inch: Up to 17.5 hours with AMD, up to 16.5 hours with Intel

Another big difference between the consumer and commercial variants of the Surface Laptop 5 is that the former utilizes firmware-based TPM 2.0 for security, while the latter has a TPM 2.0 chip for enterprise-grade security. Both consumer and commercial models ship with Windows 11 out of the box. The consumer version comes with Windows 11 Home pre-installed, while commercial users can choose between Windows 10 Pro or Windows 11 Pro.

Depending on the configuration and build you choose, you’ll find either 8GB, 16GB, ore 32GB of RAM. The biggest difference between the Surface Laptop 4 and the Surface Laptop 5 is that the former utilizes LPDDR4x memory, while the latter relies on faster LPDDR5x.

Microsoft continues to offer removable solid-state drive options, ranging from 256GB to 1TB across its Surface Laptop 5 models.

And with the processor bump, the Surface Laptop 5 also benefits from faster Bluetooth 5.1 – compared to Bluetooth 5.0 on the earlier model. The Surface Laptop 5 also maintains the Laptop 4’s support for Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax support, which means that Wi-Fi 6E isn’t yet supported on Microsoft’s laptop line. And like last year’s model, the Surface Laptop 5 doesn’t come with built-in mobile broadband support – if you need 3G, 4G LTE, or 5G connectivity, you’ll need to tether to a mobile phone, like Microsoft’s Surface Duo.

The webcam, unfortunately, maintains its 720p HD resolution this year. We would have loved to see Microsoft equip the Surface Laptop 5 with an FHD 1080p sensor, but that sadly did not happen. Windows Hello face recognition is still on board for passwordless log ins.

Design

The laptops maintain the same design and dimension as its predecessor, with the smaller 13.5-inch model sticking to the same 13.5 x 12.1 x 0.57-inch footprint and the larger 15-inch model maintaining its 13.4 x 9.6 x 0.58-inch silhouette.

On the surface, the biggest changes this year will be the addition of new colors. While the 15-inch model will continue to be available in more muted, professional colors – you can choose from the same Platinum or Matte Black hues with metal palm rests – the 13.5-inch model comes with a new Sage color option, replacing the prior generation’s Ice Blue hue.

The smaller Surface Laptop 5 is available in either Platinum with an Alcantara-coated palm rest, Sage, Matte Black, or Sandstone. The latter three color choices come with a metal palm rest, and the choice between metal or Alcantara palm rest is largely subjective. Alcantara is warmer to touch and feels more luxurious and inviting, but can wear out over time. The metal palm rest is similar to most modern laptops, including the aluminum-clad MacBook Pro, and is colder to touch but may be more durable over time.

Port selections are still the same this year. You’ll get the same single USB-C port, a USB-A 3.1 port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and the Surface Connect port. The USB-C port on the Surface Laptop 5 also supports Thunderbolt 4 this year.

Display

The continuity in design means that the screen size and resolution hasn’t changed. It builds on the HDR format, and the new IQ tech help optimize the content shown on your screen based on the ambient brightness of the room.
It's a new year, which means it's highly likely we're going to be getting a new Surface Laptop at some point soon. The last Surface Laptop shipped in the spring of 2021, dubbed "Surface Laptop 4" and was a relatively minor refresh over the Surface Laptop 3, introducing 11th Gen chips and a new colorway.

In fact, every new version of the Surface Laptop since its debut has been a relatively minor update. Surface Laptop 4 basically features the same design as the first Surface Laptop from 2017, and while it sounds like we may be getting some minor chassis updates, most of the changes with Surface Laptop 5 will be on the inside.

So, when is it coming? Here's everything we know so far about the Surface Laptop 5. We'll update this story periodically whenever new information about the next Surface Laptop arises! Be sure to check out our best Surface PCs roundup in the meantime!

Surface Laptop 5: Price & availability

The last Surface Laptop shipped in April 2021, meaning we're just about coming into a window of time where it would make sense to see a new Surface Laptop announced. We're not 100% sure whether Microsoft is planning to unveil a new Surface Laptop this spring or whether it plans to wait until the second half of 2022, as the ongoing component chip shortage continues to push back the shipping of new hardware.

Regardless, the Surface Laptop 5 is almost definitely on the cards for some point this year. Availability is expected to be the same as the Surface Laptop 4, thought a global rollout may be slow because of the chip shortage.

Regarding price, we don't expect the Surface Laptop 5 to deviate much from the pricing structure of the Surface Laptop 4, meaning the entry-level model will start at $999, with pricing maxing out around $2,400.

Surface Laptop 5: Specs

Source: Daniel Rubino (Image credit: Daniel Rubino)

There's been one spec sheet leak for the Surface Laptop 5, though the legitimacy of the source remains in question. Of course, we'll also see updated chips, this time using the latest from both Intel and AMD in the 13.5-inch and 15-inch variants.

Surface Laptop 5: Design and features

The leaked spec-sheet mentions a "new and improved" design for the Surface Laptop 5, though the dimensions of the product on the same spec sheet suggest it's going to be basically the same shape and size as the previous versions. The spec sheet also mentions that the Laptop 5 will have two USB-C ports, one more than the current device, meaning there may be some very minor changes to the external chassis.

If the overall dimensions are the same, and the screen sizes remain at 13.5 and 15 inches respectively, that unfortunately means we're not getting thinner bezels on the Surface Laptop 5. The "new and improved" design may simply be referring to the additional ports and 120Hz display.

On that subject, the leaked specs do mention a higher-refresh 120Hz Dynamic Refresh display, which would be a big upgrade over the Surface Laptop 4 and its 60Hz panel. The Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop Studio both feature 120Hz displays, so it would make sense to see the Surface Laptop 5 join the fray in that department.

Overall, it's looking like the next Surface Laptop will be a relatively nice upgrade over the Surface Laptop 4, albeit with somewhat minor changes to the external design. The new chips, higher-refresh rate display, an additional USB-C port, and Thunderbolt 4 (although, just USB 4.0 for the AMD version as Thunderbolt 4 is an Intel technology) will be much welcomed additions to the device. Plus, those Intel 12th Gen and AMD Ryzen 6000 chips are going to make the Surface Laptop 5 quite the powerhouse.

What you need to know

Recent leaks suggest that the Surface Laptop 5 will feature modern chips from AMD.

If the reported specs are correct, the Surface Laptop 5 will have options for 12th Gen Intel chips or AMD Ryzen 6000-series CPUs.

Microsoft has provided AMD and Intel options for Surface Laptops in the past, but the AMD CPUs were from previous generations compared to when the laptops shipped.

Microsoft may ship modern AMD processors inside its Surface Laptop for the first time this year. According to an alleged leaked spec sheet shared by Windows Prime, the Surface Laptop 5 will have options for either 12th Gen Intel Core CPUs or AMD Ryzen 6000-series chips.

Microsoft has had options for AMD and Intel processors in the Surface Laptop lineup before, but AMD chips have always been a generation behind when offered, as was the case with Surface Laptop 4. A shift to the latest generation of AMD CPUs would give Surface Laptop shoppers a better option on the AMD side of things.

The processor section of the leak shows options for the AMD Ryzen 5 6880U (6 cores) and Ryzen 7 6980U (8 cores). Both AMD versions of the device will also reportedly have "Radeon Graphics Microsoft Surface Edition."

Source: Windows Prime (Image credit: Source: Windows Prime)

It's not just the chip options of the Surface Laptop 5 that appear set for an upgrade. The leaked spec sheet states that the Surface Laptop 5 will have two USB-C ports that support Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4. The Surface Laptop 5 also has a USB-A port, based on the leak.

Additionally, there is also now an upgraded 120Hz PixelSense Flow display, similar to what Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop Studio feature, including Dynamic Refresh and Dolby Vision.

The sheet claims that the Surface Laptop 5 gets 21 hours of battery life, but that's likely ambitious. Battery claims are often high from laptop manufacturers, so it's better to wait for reviewers to do real-life battery testing and to run specific benchmarks.

As is the case with all leaks, this information needs to be taken with a grain of salt. The final specs that the Surface Laptop 5 ships with could be different than those that appear in the shared spec sheet.

Despite the alleged leak, according to our sources, Microsoft won't ship Surface Laptop 5 until later this year.
