When Microsoft announced the Surface Pro 12 for Business and Surface Laptop 8 for Business, the company also snuck out an update to the Surface Slim Pen 2. That update adds support for Windows 11's new haptic feedback system.

That means you don't have to buy a laptop that starts at $1,949.99 to feel Windows 11 through haptics.

The Surface Slim Pen 2 has always had the hardware to provide haptic feedback, but the tactile signals have been limited to use in certain apps. A few Microsoft 365 apps support haptics, as do a few third-party inking apps.

Now, haptics is built directly into Windows 11. Back in April, Microsoft shipped a new feature that allows you to feel the operating system through subtle vibrations. The haptic feedback system, officially called "Haptic signals," integrates with the operating system and sends small vibrations when you perform certain tasks.

Our Senior Editor Zac Bowden spoke highly of Windows 11's haptics when testing the feature recently:

"If you do have a compatible device, prepare to be impressed with the implementation of this new system. It feels great, and makes using Windows 11 feel super satisfying. Haptic bumps are present across the OS; when dragging files in File Explorer, aligning objects in apps, and snapping app windows to the edges of your screen."

Haptic signals require specific hardware, and the list of supported devices is short. The Logitech MX Master 4 became the first mouse to support the feature with a recent update. The trackpad of the new Surface Laptop 8 for Business also works with Haptic signals.

That's the entire list at the moment, at least when it comes to trackpads. The Surface Flex Keyboard has not received the same treatment as the Surface Slim Pen 2 and lacks haptic support.

The Surface Slim Pen 2 integrating with Windows 11's new haptic feedback system means you can use the feature on older, and more affordable, Surface hardware.

Surface Pro 11 for Business owners should rush to their PC to install the latest firmware update. Not out of urgency for a security improvement, but for relief from a frustrating set of bugs that have plagued the Surface Pro 11 for Business since just after the device launched.

The March 2026 firmware update for the Surface Pro 11 for Business fixes an issue that can cause the Slim Pen 2 to ink while hovering and a separate issue that can cause finger touches to be inaccurate. The update also solved a problem that can stop the screen from responding to touch after the device is idle or asleep.

The improvements and fixes are outlined in a Microsoft support document:

• Reliability:
  • Write and draw smoothly with your pen. We’ve fixed issues where Surface Slim Pen 2 inks while hovering, loses tracking at lower pen pressure settings, delays inking after you set the pressure, or uses inaccurate pressure levels. 
  • Get seamless touchscreen functionality. We’ve resolved an issue where finger touches on the screen aren’t accurate, and we’ve addressed issues with the touchscreen not responding after the device is idle or wakes from sleep.   
• Performance and usability:
  • Complete your work efficiently. We’ve resolved an issue where the touch response is slow when the device is used on a flat surface with a UAG Workflow Series Industrial-Grade Screen Protector for Surface Pro.

The issues appear to be limited to the Surface Pro 11 for Business, which is powered by an Intel processor. The Surface update history page only lists the fixes under the "Business" category.

That aligns with complaints made on a Tech Community post last year:

"When using the Surface Slim Pen 2, the device begins to register ink input while the pen is still hovering a few millimeters above the screen. It does not require any physical contact or pressure.

This "hover-inking" makes handwriting completely unusable. As I write, any time I lift the pen to start a new letter or stroke, the pen continues to draw a line as it moves through the air to its next position. This results in messy, connected handwriting with unwanted "tails," completely defeating the purpose of having a premium inking device."

The user that reported the issue performed several tests to ensure that their unit was not defective. They also tried a clean install of Windows via Windows Recovery Image, ensured drivers and firmware were up to date, and ran the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit.

They even shared a video of the issue. Their dedication to confirming this issue is impressive, but I doubt a compliment from me will make them feel any better.

Months after that post went live, Microsoft has addressed the issue with a firmware update.

Several people responded to that Tech Community post confirming that they have experienced the same issue. Those comments also state that it is the Surface Pro 11 for Business that is affected.

A separate post from April 2023 discusses a similar issue, though that must have referred to an earlier Surface Pro model, since the Surface Pro 11 first shipped in 2024 and the Business model came out in 2025.

Keen-eyed Surface fans have spotted a number of online videos depicting colorful Surface Slim Pen 2s, which have usually only ever existed in black. Unfortunately, Microsoft says these new colorful peripherals are limited edition and won't be made for sale, meaning you can't have one.

Microsoft says it built a range of limited edition Surface Slim Pens to give away at a recent Surface launch event for the new Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch, where it invited a number of influencers to attend. It was here that Microsoft gave away these colorful Surface Slim Pens.

It looks like Microsoft made the limited edition Surface Slim Pen in 4 colorways: orange, yellow, purple, and blue. Unfortunately, we only have good images of the orange Surface Slim Pen via a short video by @renzsadiwa and the purple pen by @boxiii on YouTube.

This isn't the first time Microsoft has made colorful Surface Pens. The original Surface Pen was available in a number of colors, usually matching the Surface Type Cover accessories that were available at the time.

It's only with the Surface Slim Pen that Microsoft stopped offering the peripheral in multiple colors. It's only ever been available in black since the first-generation Surface Slim Pen launched in 2019, alongside the Surface Pro X.

While these colorful Surface Slim Pens are limited edition and only given away to a few lucky people, it is reassuring to see Microsoft experimenting with colorful pens again. Hopefully that means we'll eventually have more color options of the Surface Slim Pen 3, whenever that gets announced.

Microsoft Surface enthusiasts may have a new option when it comes to the best Surface Pen alternatives. Adonit just announced its Neo Ink stylus, which is compatible with a wide range of Surface hardware. While we'll have to get our hands on the pen to fully judge it, the specs and design of the device seem quite promising.

The Adonit Neo Ink works with Surface Pro (3-8), Surface Book (1-3), Surface Go (1-2), Surface Studio (1-2), Surface Laptop (1-2), and Surface 3. There's a chance that it would work with other devices, but we've only included what the product's listing shows.

The Neo Ink magnetically attaches to Surface hardware. You can use the pen while it's charging through USB-C, though that would likely feel awkward due to balance issues. Adonit claims 100 hours of battery life off a full charge of the Neo Ink.

 Like Microsoft's own Surface Pen, the Adonit Neo Ink supports 4,096 levels of pressure, tilt, and pressure sensitivity. Adonit's new stylus also includes programmable shortcut buttons and support for palm rejection.

The Surface Slim Pen 2 is the new standard for modern Surface PCs, adding wireless charging, haptic feedback, and a more compact design compared to the standard Surface Pen.

While the official pens are my two top recommendations, you might not want to pay the premium price that Microsoft asks, or you might want something that supports more inking protocols for use with other devices.

There are plenty of third-party styli out there that are compatible with Surface PCs, and my top picks in that regard are the Metapen M2 and Metapen M3 Pro. Not quite what you need? I've included other top alternatives.

Choosing the best Surface Pen alternative in 2025

Microsoft does not usually bundle a Surface Pen or Surface Slim Pen with its PCs, and the elevated cost pushes a lot of people to seek out an alternative.

While I remain confident that the official hardware will deliver the best experience — especially with the Slim Pen 2's wireless charging and haptic feedback abilities — the alternatives keep improving.

Metapen is gaining a positive reputation as a leading alternative, with the M2 and M3 Pro styli offering high-end features at a lower cost. Even the M3 Pro, which delivers the same strain gauge technology as found in Apple and Huawei pens, is cheaper than the official Surface Pen at about $70. The Metapen M2 is even cheaper, often coming in at about $30 most of the time.

I've personally spent a lot of time with HP's Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen. I love the way it feels, the USB-C charging port is hidden with a neat slide function, and it remains comfortable in my hand. You can usually find it for about $63.

What pen is best for older Surface devices?

Because the Microsoft Pen Procotol (MPP) is backward compatible, you can essentially use any of the newest pens with older Surface devices. Microsoft has now arrived at MPP version 2.6 with the Surface Slim Pen 2, while the standard Slim Pen hits MPP 2.0.

You won't get all of the latest features if the Surface PC doesn't also support the latest standard — you'll notably miss out on as many levels of pressure sensitivity, haptic feedback, and tilt support — but it'll still handle the basics.

Microsoft's Surface Pen support page provides a ton of information regarding pen/device feature compatibility, but in general, you shouldn't pay the premium for the latest pen if you're using, say a Surface Pro 4.

Something like Wacom's Bamboo Ink can get the job done for around $40, and it comes with the added benefit of hybrid AES compatibility for many other devices.

What you need to know

• Journal, an app for notetaking, sketching, and whatever else you want to record, just got haptics support.
• Specifically, the app will work with the new Surface Slim Pen 2 and give off tactile signals to make for a more responsive and visceral journaling experience.
• Each tool, be it the digital pencil, pen, highlighter, or eraser, will feature unique haptic feedback.

Microsoft has announced quite a bit in recent memory. Not only are Windows 11 and a slew of peripheral services and software releasing on October 5, but so are a sizeable line of new Surface devices. The company's Journal app is taking advantage of the latter to make for a fresh inking experience by way of the Surface Slim Pen 2.

For those using the Surface Slim Pen 2 on devices such as the Surface Pro 8 or Surface Laptop Studio (so many Surfaces!), you'll get special vibrations when inking in the Journal app. Each tool in the app has its own specific type of feedback, designed to make the experience more immersive. The pen tool is meant to feel like an actual pen, while the pencil tool gives off a different sensation designed to evoke the real sensation of graphite on paper.

Furthermore, Journal will let you tweak the intensity of the haptic feedback to your liking so that you can have an optimal experience that doesn't overpower your senses or leave you wanting. Many of the best Surface accessories are discounted right now through Best Buy. To take part in the deal, you have to bundle two accessories together. The Surface Slim Pen, Surface Earbuds, and several Surface mice are available to bundle. Surface accessories normally sell at premium prices, so any time you can get them at a discount is worth a look.

Getting the discount takes a few more clicks than you might expect. On any Best Buy listing for Surface accessories, you'll see the text "Hot offer save on 2 Select Surface Accessories." Clicking this directs you to a page of the highest-rated bundles. In my testing, all of the suggested bundles are for a pair of Surface Mobile mice. While you certainly could purchase mice in two colors, or a mouse for each hand, you can easily bundle other devices.

At the top of the page, there's an option labeled "Build my Package." This takes you to a page to freely choose which Surface accessories you'd like to bundle. The Surface Mobile Mouse drops down to $15 when bundled. The Surface Slim Pen is only $107 when included in a bundle. Note that the lower prices only appear after you've added them to your package. In my testing, all deals reduce your total by a combined $40.

Alternatively, if you just add two Surface accessories to your cart, the deal will activate automatically on checkout.

Surface Pen vs. Raphael 520: Luxury or affordability?

In terms of the basics, both the Surface Pen and the Raphael 520 are identical. Both styluses have 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and support for tilting, meaning that both will provide a fantastic experience for artists. Also, they both have eraser functionality as well; the back of the Surface Pen functions as an always-active eraser that you rub on the screen, while you hold the top button on the Raphael 520 to activate its eraser mode to use with the tip.

There are, however, some more advanced things that the Surface Pen has that the Raphael 520 lacks. The Surface Pen has a button that can be programmed to have three separate functions when pressed in three distinct ways, allowing the user to turn on programs or execute specific functions instantly with a shortcut. Also, the Surface Pen is also always on, as opposed to the Raphael 520 which has to be reconnected with a button press after it goes into sleep mode during inactivity. This only takes a few seconds to do, admittedly, but it's worth noting nonetheless. The only other difference between the two styluses is their batteries. The Surface Pen uses a single AAAA battery that you'll need to replace after nine months, while the Raphael 520 has a rechargeable battery that lasts 100 hours. Ultimately, rechargeable vs. replacement is something that comes down to personal preference.

Ultimately, the Renaisser Raphael 520 is going to be the best option for the vast majority of users due to its excellent performance and very affordable price. Sure, it lacks a few of the things that the Surface Pen can do, but when you consider that you pay less than half of what the Surface Pen costs to get it in the first place, the trade-off will be more than worth it.

That being said, the Surface Pen's programmable button and always-on functionality are useful and convenient. If you have the money to spend, a Surface Pen is an excellent choice if you want to save as much time as you can while working.

If you misplace or damage your Surface Pen, there are plenty of third-party replacements out there vying for attention. One that recently came to our attention is the Renaisser Raphael 520, which is drawing positive comparisons to Microsoft's official Surface Pen. The kicker is, it's less than half the price.

The stylus comes in three colors: silver, black, and burgundy. It packs 4096 levels of pressure, tilt, and is compatible with the Microsoft Pen Protocol. That means it works with every Surface ranging from the Surface Pro 3 through the Surface Pro X, Surface Laptop 3, and Surface Pro 7.

A Reddit user who just got their hands on a Raphael 520 recently raved about it on the official Surface reddit.

Youtube channel Tablet Pro gave the Raphael an in-depth review, and came away calling it the "best stylus for digital artists and notetakes."

We'll have to withold judgement until we can get our hands on one, but it's a positive sign that the Raphael 520 is getting solid reviews. If you're in need of a Surface Pen replacement for yourself, you can grab the Raphael 520 at Amazon now for $40.

Overall, the Microsoft Surface Slim Pen is the best choice if you only use a Surface device and want the benefits of eraser functionality and a rechargeable battery. However, the Dell Premium Active Pen should be your pick if you have a Wacom AES device instead of (or in addition to) a Surface, or if you simply want to save some money.

Surface Slim Pen vs. Premium Active Pen: Performance or versatility?

In many ways, these two devices are actually incredibly similar. Both of them feature 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity that allow for advanced inking, and they both also support tilting for inking in finer, more nuanced detail. They also both have buttons that can be customized to perform specific actions; the Microsoft Surface Slim Pen has one button that can be pressed in three ways for separate effects, while the Dell Premium Active Pen has individual buttons for each of these three actions. Lastly, both pens can magnetically attach to the side of devices.

The differences between the two, however, are significant. The Microsoft Surface Slim Pen uses a USB-C rechargeable battery as opposed to an AAAA battery that you have to swap out every so often, which will save you some money in the long run. On top of that, it has an eraser function, which is something that artists and notetakers alike will find very useful. The Dell Premium Active Pen, though, notably has multi-protocol compatibility as it works with both MPP and Wacom AES devices. Surface Slim Pen vs. Premium Active Pen: Which should you buy?

At the end of the day, neither of these pens is definitively better than the other. It entirely comes down to what you would prefer and/or find more useful.

Most of your choice will come down to what device or devices you need the stylus for. If you only have a Surface device, like the idea of using rechargeable batteries, want an eraser function, and want a slim, flat type of stylus, the Microsoft Surface Slim Pen will be perfect for you. However, if you want a stylus that will work with both MPP and Wacom AES protocols, has a traditional rounded design, and won't cost you as much, the Dell Premium Active Pen should be your choice.

The Surface Slim Pen is a redesigned stylus that works with Surface devices. It rolled out alongside the Surface Pro X, but it also works with the majority of the Surface line, including all Surface Book devices, all Surface Laptops, the Surface Go, all Surface Studio devices, and every Surface Pro since the Surface Pro 3.

The Surface Slim Pen features a flatter design than previous Surface Pens. Many compare it to a carpenter's pencil with its relatively flat body, though it has smooth and rounded sides. According to Microsoft support, the Surface Slim Pen gets an estimated battery life of 15 hours, though you shouldn't have to worry about its battery often thanks to its convenient charging options.

Charge it up

The Microsoft Surface Slim Pen doesn't require batteries, instead it can be charged wirelessly. It comes with a charging cradle or you can charge it inside the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard. Unfortunately, the only way to get the Signature Keyboard is to purchase the Surface Pro X Signature Keyboard with Slim Pen Bundle, which includes the Slim Pen and the Surface Pro X Signature Keyboard.

The Surface Pro X Signature Keyboard is the most convenient way to keep the Surface Slim Pen charged. You can pop the pen into the keyboard and keep the pen charged while you're on the go. A handy feature of the Signature Keyboard is that it makes sure your pen is always upright and ready to charge. It uses magnets to flip the Slim Pen over if you try to rest it inside the keyboard incorrectly.

If you don't want to purchase the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard or if you plan to use the Slim Pen with a different Surface device, you can charge the pen wirelessly inside the included charging cradle.

Overall, the Microsoft Surface Pen is the better choice in terms of sheer performance — provided you're using a Surface. If you have a device that uses Wacom AES, or if you want a pen that can be used across both a Wacom AES device and a Surface device, the Dell Premium Active Pen will be perfect for you.

Surface Pen vs. Premium Active Pen: Performance or versatility?

When it comes to raw performance, these two digital pens are nearly identical. Both of them have 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and support for tilting, which is very useful for artists, and both of them also have three programmable functions that you can configure (the Surface Pen has a single button that can be activated in three different ways; the Premium Active Pen has three buttons). On top of this, both of them can be magnetically attached to the side of devices, making taking them with you a breeze.

However, one key difference that gives the Surface Pen the edge is that you can use the bottom end of the pen as an eraser, which is something that both artists and note takers will love. While you can swap to the eraser tool by pressing and holding the Premium Active Pen's lower button, this isn't the same as having the manual erasing functionality that the Surface Pen does.

However, don't count out the Dell Premium Active Pen if you're either not using a Surface or using both a Surface and a Wacom AES device, as it works with both Wacom AES protocol and MPP. Since the Surface Pen only works with MPP, you are limited to using Surface devices with it. If versatility and device compatibility is more important to you, then Dell's option will be a better pick.

Surface Pen vs. Premium Active Pen: Which should you buy?

At the end of the day, there isn't really a definitive winner in this match-up. Rather, it depends on what you're looking for in a digital pen, and what will be the most useful for you.

If you're someone who only uses a Surface device and would prefer to have an eraser for higher performance, than the Surface Pen is the pen you should choose. It doesn't work with devices that have other protocols, but if you only plan to use Surface, that won't matter to you anyway.

However, if you do want to have the ability to use your pen with Wacom AES devices, such as most of Dell's, than your best bet will be the Dell Premium Active Pen. Aside from the lack of an eraser, Dell's pen performs identically to the Surface Pen, and the compatibility with both Wacom AES and MPP gives it excellent versatility.

You can't compare the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) against the Microsoft Surface Slim Pen since both styli are for different platforms. If you prefer Apple's portable experiences on the iPad, the Pencil is for you. If you prefer a full Windows environment, go with the Surface Slim Pen. Both are excellent companions.

Microsoft Surface Slim Pen vs. Apple Pencil: specs

There's not much to differentiate between the two in terms of performance. Microsoft's Surface Pens and Apple Pencils have been fairly consistent with this regard, and choosing one over the other won't unlock some hidden enhancements. Where Microsoft's Surface Slim Pen comes out on top is with weight and dimensions.

The Surface Slim Pen is both considerably lighter and more compact — hence the name. Both styli support Bluetooth, have tilt support, wireless charging, magnetic attachment support, and last for more than 10 hours on a single charge.

Windows or iPad OS

For compatibility, you'll not be able to use either stylus with opposite hardware platforms. The Surface Slim Pen will not play well with the iPad Pro, and the Pencil will not want to connect to a Surface tablet. Go with the Surface Slim Pen for Windows

If you're a fan of Windows hardware, there's not a whole lot of difference performance-wise between the two styli so that the Surface Slim Pen will be great for doodling and note-taking.

Apple Pencil is perfect for iPad Pro fans

If you enjoy using Apple hardware and plan on getting an iPad Pro, you'll want the second-gen Apple Pencil. It's more restricted in what devices it can work with, and it's also more substantial, but overall, you won't notice much of a difference.

If you want to enjoy the latest technology Microsoft has available for its stylus, the Slim Pen is what you should get. But if you don't care for wireless charging (with the Surface Pro X) or an integrated rechargeable battery, the Surface Pen will save you some money.

Along with all of the new Surface PCs Microsoft introduced at its October Surface event, the company also debuted a few new accessories. Chief among them is the new Surface Slim Pen, which is now available to preorder for $150.

The Surface Slim Pen, much the like the Surface Pro X it appeared with, is a complete redesign of the classic Surface stylus. It now features a flat side to help it fit into a cradle, and it includes wireless charging. When paired with the Surface Pro X, you can slot the pen in a cradle above the keyboard to keep it charging on the go.

Microsoft also says that the Surface Slim Pen is "compatible with a wide variety of Surface devices," though it doesn't provide a comprehensive list. Presumably, you'll be able to use it across all of the newest Surface devices, and likely ones from recent years as well.

The Surface Slim Pen is available to preorder now for $150 and is set to start shipping on November 5.

What you need to know

• A new FCC filing hints that we might see wireless charging included in the next Surface Pen.
• The filing makes mention of a "charging coil," which is a component that would facilitate wireless charging.

We're just a couple of weeks away from Microsoft's October 2 Surface event, and a new FCC filing may give us a small hint at one upgrade to expect. Picked up by The Verge, the filing, which is attributed to Microsoft, makes reference to a stylus pen, indicating it's an updated version of the Surface Pen. However, the filing also mentions a charging coil, indicating that the next Surface Pen could feature wireless charging.

Both the updated Apple Pencil and Samsung's new S-Pen use charging coils as a mechanism for recharging the internal power sources that power them. Notably, the Apple Pencil magnetically docks to the top of the newest iteration of the iPad Pro to initiate charging. We could see a similar implementation on this year's Surface Pro.

The current Surface Pen uses replaceable batteries, and has for some time, so this would be a major shift in convenience. It will also be interesting to see whether — if the Surface Pen does pick up wireless charging — the move to an internal power source could come with a slimmer design.

It just works

The Surface Pen is an excellent accessory for any Windows 10 tablet that supports it. Lucky for HP Envy x2 owners, Microsoft's handy drawing tool works just fine with this device too. The pen itself uses N-trig, which is fine for the Envy x2, allowing you to not only pair the two together and use them without issue, but the button also works.

N-trig is just a fancy name for the technology used to make it all work like magic. Microsoft liked the tech N-trig produced so much that the Israel-based company was purchased in 2015, hence why you now see N-trig with all new Surface devices instead of Wacom.

Go forth and draw all the things on the HP Envy x2, which is a 2-in-1 that's more on the tablet side of things, whilst using the Surface Pen button to open apps, wake up the tablet, or other crazy functions.

When portability is what you truly desire, you should go with the Envy x2. The ability to detach the device from its base makes it possible to use it as a light notebook and a tablet, depending on the immediate needs. The only drawback is the battery life, which is around 8-10 hours less than the Spectre Folio. That is unless you get the ARM version, which we recommend over Intel.

The Surface Pen supports 4,096 levels of pressure on the Surface Go, complete with tilt support and a magnetized edge for keeping your Pen safely stored to the side of your device. Taking AAAA batteries (that last for an absolute age) allows you to take replacements with you for when you eventually run out of stored juice. No need to wait forthe Surface Pen to recharge.

How does Surface Pen work with privacy screens?

If you're worried that you won't be able to utilize a Surface Pen with a privacy screen, don't be — every Surface device has special sensors built into the displays that allow the Surface Pen to work without problems, even through thin layers of glass or plastic. The latter is what privacy screens are made of, so you'll have full functionality when using these two accessories together.

That being said, you may not like the texture of the privacy screen and how it feels to write or draw on it when using the Surface Pen. In addition, artists in particular may be annoyed by the polarized surface of privacy screens as they can change what artwork looks like. If neither of these potential grievances bother you, though, then you should have no issue with using a Surface Pen and a privacy screen together.

Why use a Surface Pen?

If you don't own one for your Surface device already, the Surface Pen is an excellent accessory. Light, smooth, and comfortable to use, it's one of the best touch-screen pens in the tech world, hands-down. In addition, it supports 4,096 different points of pressure, and you can even flip the pen upside-down and use the back of it as an eraser, just like you can with a real pencil. All of this comes together to make the Surface Pen a fantastic tool for artists and writers alike.

Why use a privacy screen?

Privacy screens are a type of display filter that hides your activity from people near you. They accomplish this by utilizing a special type of polarization that prevents things on your screen from being visible outside of a centered viewing angle. In practice, this means that the user of the device will be able to see everything on the screen, but people to their sides and back will just see a darker surface. People that often have to open documents with sensitive information in them will find privacy screens useful, though anyone that simply wants to use their device in public without sacrificing privacy will also appreciate one.

If you're a Surface Go owner, then we recommend the Celicious Privacy Plus privacy screen. It's a bit on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for. Unlike most privacy screens, which have a viewing angle of 60 degrees, the Celicious has an angle of 45 degrees, which offers an even better amount of privacy to the user. In addition, the surface of the screen is glossy and smooth, which gives it an almost glass-like texture.

If you don't own a Surface Go, but still want a privacy screen for your device, we recommend going to Amazon and searching the name of your device plus "privacy screen" to find a screen that will suit your needs. If you own a Surface Book 2, we have suggestions for a good screen here.

Surface Pen just works

Microsoft's Surface Pen is a great accessory for any Windows 10 tablet or PC that supports a stylus. Should you be looking to purchase the HP Spectre Folio, you'll be pleased to learn that the Surface Pen works with the notebook, thanks to the support of N-trig technology.

Not only can you quickly pair the Surface Pen with the HP Spectre Folio, but it's also possible to utilize the stylus button. But what exactly is N-trig? It's the name for the technology that makes all this possible. It's also the name of an Israel-based company that developed the tech, which was subsequently purchased by Microsoft.

This resulted in Surface hardware coming with N-trig support out the box, as well as the Surface Pen, which can be paired with the Spectre Folio and other N-trig compatible Windows 10 devices.

It also means you can use any stylus with the HP Spectre Folio 13 as long as it uses N-trig technology. The Spectre Folio comes with the HP Tilt Pen that also makes use of it. There's also the Wacom Bamboo Ink, which is popular amoung inking enthusiasts. Basically, you'll have plenty of options when it comes to finding a stylus you like.

The Surface Pen is a great option though for people looking to take full advantage of its 4,096 pressure levels. That sensitivity will ensure you can draw or write with precision. Since the Spectre Folio is a 2-in-1, you can lie the screen flat for an even better inking experience.

Surface Laptop 2 is compatible with the Surface Pen

Despite having a clamshell notebook design, the Surface Laptop 2's 13.5-inch touch display is compatible with the Surface Pen, which is sold separately for about $100. It's important to note that while you will get 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity for a natural inking experience, the Surface Laptop 2 does not feature tilt support.

This omittance coupled with the upright display and fixed hinge on the Surface Laptop 2 will likely turn away those who need a laptop for creativity and design. You can't lay the display flat on a tablet unless you turn it upside down with the main portion of the laptop stuck in the air, and there's also no magnetic attachment that lets you keep your Surface Pen nearby when not in use.

If you need pen support for the occasional notes or sketches, the Surface Laptop 2's clamshell design shouldn't be too much of a hindrance, but there are certainly laptops out there that will deliver a far better inking experience, like the Surface Book 2.

Surface Book 2 is a compromise between tablet and notebook

The Surface Book 2 is generally going to cost quite a bit more than the MateBook X Pro for similarly spec'd configurations, but it will deliver a stellar inking experience when coupled with the Surface Pen (also sold separately here).

The Book 2 is available in 13.5 and 15-inch configurations, it has available discrete graphics (GPU) depending on the size — NVIDIA GTX 1050 GPU for the smaller model and NVIDIA GTX 1060 GPU for the larger model — and it has a modular design that really translates well to drawing, sketching, and writing.

The display detaches from the keyboard and touchpad portion to become its own tablet, plus it can be put back together with the screen backward and the bottom portion acting as an adjustable stand for the display. This means you can use the Surface Pen while the tablet is in your hand, flat on a table, or attached at an angle to the base for extra comfort. While together, you get extra performance and battery life from hardware contained in the keyboard portion.

The Surface Pen and Book 2 combined get the same 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, but you also get full tilt support. The Book 2 also has a magnet built into the side that the Pen can snap onto, making it easier to keep tabs on it when it's not being used.

Altogether, the Book 2 is a much better choice for anyone who plans on inking regularly. It's more versatile thanks to the modular design, its ports more closely match those on the MateBook X Pro, and it has the performance hardware available to handle design and creative software.

MateBook X Pro still has a gorgeous display despite no active pen support

It might not work with an active pen, but the MateBook X Pro still has an unreal display. It has a 3:2 aspect ratio just like Surface devices, it has a high 3000x2000 resolution (which is the same as the smaller Book 2 and just short of the larger Book 2), and it supports regular touch function. It hits 99 percent sRGB and 77 percent AdobeRGB color reproduction for an accurate picture, and there's almost no bezel at all. If you don't think you need pen support after all, this is a great pick for an everyday Ultrabook.

Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Book 2 offer active pen support

If you're looking for a device with a clamshell notebook design and active pen support, the Surface Laptop 2 fits the bill. The Surface Pen offers 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, but the upright display that doesn't fold around might be annoying for those who frequently use the pen. For a more appropriate device, the Surface Book 2 is available in both 13.5- and 15-inch models. Here you get a modular notebook design with a tablet that can be removed from the keyboard portion and used on its own. Combined with the Surface Pen, it offers one of the best inking experiences available today.

The Surface Laptop 2 just isn't good for inking

The Surface Laptop 2 is a powerful, sleek, and sexy device, and while it does support inking, its form factor simply doesn't lend itself well to doing so.

The Laptop 2 has a fixed hinge that doesn't allow you to convert the laptop into a flat configuration, not without angling the keyboard up in the air at least. The display does support inking with 4,096 levels of pressure complete with tilt support, but, the fact that you can't lay the device out flat just prevents it from being a pleasant experience. At best, you'll be signing documents or perhaps annotating a picture, but for that, you can purchase a cheap non-digital stylus or simply use your finger.

Unlike the Surface Pro, Surface Book, and Surface Go, the Surface Laptop 2 doesn't even have magnetized edges for storing the Pen, since it just kind of knows its not designed for frequent inking.

Thankfully, literally every other type of Surface not only has some form of flat screen configuration, but also includes magnetic storage for the pen. If you're going to get your ink on, look elsewhere.

If you want a laptop-like form factor with the option of inking, the Surface Book 2 should be your first consideration. Some configurations come with dedicated graphics too, allowing you to enjoy VR, higher-end gaming, and intensive programs such as Adobe Premiere. If you want something portable but powerful, the Surface Pro 6 features quad-core processing, wrapped in a tight form factor ideal for taking to university or work, while still packing enough power to run high-end programs and even 3D games. If you simply want inking without breaking the bank, the cheap and cheerful Surface Go might not be the most powerful device in this piece, but it's small, sleek, and cheap, and is more than capable of running quality inking tools such as Sketchable, Photoshop, and OneNote.

If you're interested in inking on a Surface device, there are a range of great alternatives built from the ground up with inking in mind.

How does the Go stack up in the art world?

Testing out the 4GB Surface Go has been quite fun. Its small, light, and the refined rounded edges make it pleasant to hold versus some of the larger 2-in-1s out there. For art, it isn't perfect, but as long as you know what you're working with going in, you'll have a lot of fun with it.

The Surface Pen is often the subject of criticism among some more hardcore digital artists, but as a casual sketcher, I find it to be more than adequate to just sit down with and throw some paint up onto the screen in apps like Sketchable and Photoshop. Despite its lower-end specs, it runs Sketchable flawlessly, although some more complex pieces might take a little while to load initially when compared to a more powerful device. The same is true for Photoshop in that sense. I haven't found it to struggle with the software after the initial loading phase, although high resolution pieces with many layers may push the Surface Go to its upper limits.

Where you might find some disappointment is in the display and pen itself. Owing to the hardware, the inking experience isn't as good as you might find on a Surface Pro or Surface Book, which sport co-processors to reduce latency between the pen and the screen. The difference is fairly noticeable, but not what I'd call awful. The latency means that, occasionally, the pen will continue producing ink even when it leaves the display. Even though it's only perhaps a couple of milliseconds, it'll be enough to annoy those of you who are particular about accuracy. Depending on your style, this could be a problem.

Additionally, inking on the glass display isn't as pleasant as you might experience on a dedicated drawing tablet like the Wacom Intuous, as the flex in the glass can produce wobbles in your lines. Although with some tweaking to the Surface Pen sensitivity in the settings, you'll be able to consistently improve the experience.

Bottom line is the Surface Go is a fun device to use for light art and sketching. With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, tilt support for shading and a massive amount of digital applications to choose from thanks to the power of full Windows, it's either a great device for getting started, or something fun for veterans who want something highly portable.

Surface Go for light art

While you won't be rendering movies or building complex 3D scenes, for 2D work in Photoshop or S-mode apps like Sketchable, Surface Go is a fun tool.

Surface Pro 6 for heavier lifting

If you're a more serious artist and want something a little more capable, consider the Surface Pro 6 instead. The Pro 6 comes with a co-processor which reduces inking latency considerably in some apps. Additionally, more complex art pieces, even up to 3D, would perform far better on the Pro 6's more beefy internals. That said, it's also significantly more pricey.

Surface Go and Surface Pen offer an outstanding inking experience

Compared to the well-aged Surface 3 — to which the Surface Go is often compared — and its 256 levels of pressure sensitivity, the latest Surface Pen and Surface Go together offer 4,096 levels of sensitivity. That's a big leap, and it's immediately noticeable when drawing or writing on your Go.

There's also tilt support here that allows for better control while drawing and sketching (think shading), which is usually considered a premium feature. There might not be the same inking co-processor for lower latency like the Surface Pro has, but overall you should be satisfied with what the Surface Go can offer.

Adding to the combination is the physical size of the Go, which is about that of a notebook or sketchpad. It can be easily held in one hand while you draw or write with the other.

How does the Surface Pen connect to the Surface Go?

To communicate with your Surface Go, the Surface Pen uses a Bluetooth connection. Thanks to settings in Windows 10, you can change pen shortcuts and change which hand you predominantly write with, as well as adjust handwriting recognition and enable or disable extra effects. There's also a dedicated Surface app you can use to adjust pressure sensitivity levels and keep an eye on battery levels.

When you're not using your Surface Pen, strong magnets on the side of your Surface Go keep it in place. It's a handy way to carry your Pen around, and while it will fall off with enough force, the magnets are strong enough to pull the Go across a desk.

What about the older Surface Pen?

Those of you with an older Surface Pen — the current version released alongside the Surface Pro is considered fourth-generation — can still use it with their Surface Go, though you will not get the same pressure sensitivity or tilt support as with the latest Surface Pen.

Note that the first-generation Surface Pen from 2012 uses a different technology and does not work with new Surface devices.

Microsoft released the Surface Pen alongside its tablet lineup of portable PCs to allow owners to draw and sketch on-screen without having to use third-party options. The stylus itself is pretty good, with the latest generation being more pressure sensitive with lower latency, which means it's more responsive, in theory, than the previous Surface Pen. But what isn't so good are the numerous reports of it being slightly inaccurate when the hand is resting on the screen.

Windows Central community member Blake Seaman has been monitoring the official Microsoft Answers thread on the issue and asked if anyone else has experienced the same problem:

Microsoft commented on this bug report and noted that it is working on a patch to be released through Windows Update, but more Surface Pen users are reporting similar symptoms. Microsoft was recently granted a patent that could mean a Surface Pen future without batteries. The patent, first spotted by Digital Trends (via OnMSFT), was published on June 7 by the US Patent and Trademark Office and describes a housing that would provide power to the Surface Pen by harvesting and storing energy from the light emitted by your Surface's display.

The housing holds a panel of solar cells that would sit near the tip or the pen so it remains close to the screen while inking. The solar cells would be configured to absorb light through a window, transferring it to an optical diffuser that would then use the generated energy to recharge the pen.

"Due to the close proximity of the stylus to the touch screen during harvesting, the intensity of light that is collected from the electronic display is significantly higher than intensity from ambient lighting in a room or from outdoor lighting," Microsoft says. "The higher intensity light may lead to harvesting at a faster rate."

For charging while not in use, Microsoft also provided an example of a dock with an LED light inside that could charge the stylus while at rest.

It's worth keeping in mind that this is just a patent, so it's entirely possible we'll never see this idea make its way to a final product. Still, it's an interesting look at one of the ideas Microsoft is exploring for a potential future stylus. And it's not the first look at Surface Pen innovations we've seen in recent months. In February, two patent filings showed that Microsoft is experimenting with a touch-sensitive clip and a haptic feedback mechanism that could make their way into a future product.

Last week a patent emerged which appears to describe a touch-sensitive clip for the Surface Pen, allowing users to interact with Windows in new ways via the pen alone. Today, we found another patent which relates to the Surface Pen, which appears to be a method for creating haptic, physical feedback to the pen user via small magnets within the stylus' tip.

Described by the patent as a "Haptic Stylus," it details methods for producing haptic feedback for a variety of functions as detected by the Surface Pen, including pressure sensitivity, tilt, and button presses.

Haptics into the Surface Pen might seem unnecessary at first, but the applications have a lot of potential. For example, gentle vibrations could help create a sensation that you're writing on something rougher, like paper, producing a more natural writing experience than you'll get inking on a glass display. Additionally, Microsoft could create ways for haptic feedback for events, for example, when your stylus rolls over a link while using it to browse in Edge. This might be useful for an inking-heavy device, like say, the rumored folding Surface "Andromeda".

Microsoft to be exploring it as a possible option for the Surface Pen is encouraging, but like many patents, it might never become a real product. Apple itself was exploring haptic stylus features all the way back in 2012, and sadly for Apple fans, they never made it into the Apple Pencil. We'll just have to wait and see on this one.

What you'll like about DODOcase's Leather Apple Pencil Sleeve

DODOcase's leather stylus sleeve is very well made, and it should last for a long time if you take care of it. I've used a number of different products from the company in the past, and quality is never an issue. It's handmade in California using leather from The Hide House in nearby Napa, California. And though it only comes in one shade, the chestnut color is simple and elegant.

The sleeve is both functional and versatile. It's not specifically made for the Surface Pen, and it's perhaps a bit longer than is ideal. But the Pen itself fits perfectly in the sleeve width-wise and doesn't slide or move around when it's in place. It's also simple to bend back the top of the sleeve and easily remove the Pen without accidentally yanking off the battery cover.

The DODO Surface Pen sleeve can be personalized with gold-foil stamped and embossed initials, which is a nice touch. And that personalization is free. When it's not holding a Surface Pen, the DODOcase sleeve works well as a bookmark or other placeholder. Oh, and the DODOcase leather stylus sleeve smells swell, at least at first — I love that new leather scent.

What you won't like about DODOcase's Leather Apple Pencil Sleeve

The DODOcase "Leather Apple Pencil Sleeve" is, unfortunately — and somewhat obnoxiously — branded as an Apple Pencil accessory. And it's made to specifically fit Apple's stylus, so it's a tad too long for the Surface Pen vertically, though honestly, this is not a big deal. The company does, however, clearly state that it "works great for regular pens and other styluses," and that's accurate. But I still would have liked to see some love for Surface in the branding.

The sleeve is somewhat pricey at $34.95 (plus shipping) for what is essentially a luxury you really don't need. However, $35, or about a third of the cost of the Surface Pen, really isn't a lot of money, and chances are if you're all-in on Surface, you probably don't mind. For context, though, Waterfield Designs makes a similar leather sleeve that costs $29, and it also has a useful pocket clip that DODOcase's sleeve lacks. (And it's actually branded for Surface Pen, which we appreciate.)

Finally, I can say from experience with other DODOcase products that the gold-foil stamped onto the initials wears off very quickly. The letters are stamped into the leather, so you can still see them without the coloring if you look close. But they're harder to see, and it doesn't look great as that gold foil wears thin. The gold on my sleeve is still holding up, but I've only been using it for a week or so.

You also might want to be careful not to jam other pens or objects that are wider than the Surface Pen in there, because the leather can stretch a bit, and then the sleeve doesn't fit the Pen quite as well.

Bottom line

If you're looking for a good-looking case or sleeve for your Surface Pen, you'll appreciate the DODOcase Leather Apple Pencil Sleeve, regardless of the fact that's not designed specifically for Microsoft's Pen. It works well and fits the Surface Pen almost as if it's made just for it. And it should last for a long time with proper care — though the gold-foil stamped initials may not. However, it's not really a necessity, and at $35, it's also not exactly cheap.

Microsoft has today launched a brand new "Aqua" colored set of Surface Pro accessories for those who have been waiting for a new colored Type Cover or Surface Pen. Hardware wise, the new Aqua set is identical to all the other Surface Pro accessories, with the only difference being its color.

The new Surface Pen (about $100) not only got a visual makeover — it no longer has a pocket clip and it comes in more color options — but it's also more pressure sensitive with lower latency, which means it's more responsive, in theory, than the previous generation Pen (about $50). It also supports "tilting," for shading, though that feature will likely only appeal to very specific kinds of users, such as artists and people who use their Surfaces to draw.

But if none of those things appeal to you, and you're happy with your last-gen Pen, or you can still find an older model available online, the new one might not be for you. Windows Central forum member bulls96 has a Surface Pro 4 and is wondering if it makes sense to grab the new $100 Pen.

Microsoft's new Surface Pen delivers (limited) enhancements to older Surface PCs

I purchased a new Surface Pen along with my Surface Pro (2017), and I really enjoy using it. But I never used an earlier version of the Pen, so I don't have the perspective to say whether or not it's worth upgrading if your older Pen is working fine.

The new Surface Pen initially went up for order in June, but only in one color: Platinum. Now, Microsoft has made the full range of new Surface Pen colors available for preorder, including Burgundy, Cobalt Blue, and Black options (via MSPU).

The updated Surface Pen, which was revealed alongside the new Surface Pro at Microsoft's Shanghai event in May, is a solid improvement over its predecessor. The Pen offers quick response times with 21ms of latency, more accuracy with 4,096 pressure levels, and tilt detection that can help with shading and more.

The Platinum color option remains available for immediate shipment. If you're hoping to pick up one of the other colors, however, you can preorder them now for $99 ahead of an expected August 21 ship date.

When Microsoft announced that the Surface Laptop supports pen input, I couldn't help but wonder why. Why put pen support into a device that doesn't transform into a something where pen makes sense? I simply couldn't understand it. Even in the demo that Panos Panay did on stage, using the Surface Pen on the Surface Laptop looked like a terrible user experience. But after using the Surface Laptop for a couple of weeks, I can confidently say I'm glad Microsoft did.

Upon opening up my new Surface Laptop, the first thing I did was grab the pen from my Surface Book and attempt to write something on it, just to test the hinge and see if the experience was as bad as it looked. Surprisingly, it wasn't. From a third person perspective, the experience looks ridiculous, but using the pen on the Laptop yourself? It's surprisingly okay. Of course, you're not expected to be writing proper notes on the Surface Laptop, but that's not what the Surface Laptop has pen support for.

When it was announced, I simply couldn't figure out what the Surface Laptop had pen support for. It isn't for note taking or drawing because the Surface Laptop doesn't transform into anything where using a pen like that would make sense. Instead, the Surface Laptop has pen support for when you need it. If you're not someone who ever needs a pen, then that's fine. But if you are someone who occasionally needs to use a pen, whether that's for signing a virtual document, making a quick note in Edge or Sticky Notes, or just tapping on things at a distance, the pen support in the Surface Laptop is a godsend.

An occasional note taker

For example, just the other day, I was using my Surface Laptop and needed to take a couple of quick notes on a web page in Edge. This isn't something I need to do all that often, keep in mind. Instead of opening up Notepad and typing out those notes with the keyboard, I was able to use the built-in inking support in Edge and quickly highlight and write out the notes I wanted to make directly on the web page. On a typical laptop, that's not something you can do with a pen.

The pen is also really nice to use just to interact with the Surface Laptop while sitting up in bed, for example. I'll often be lying in bed, with my knees up and the Surface Laptop resting on my lap, and in this position poking at the screen with the Surface Pen isn't that bad of an experience. The pen can be used as a mouse in a lot of cases, offering precision targeting when selecting text or adjusting scroll bars. Of course, I can use the trackpad too, but sometimes using the pen is just as comfortable.

Now, it's important to note that the Surface Laptop doesn't have pen support because Microsoft expects you to use it all the time. Buying a Surface Laptop with the intention of using it with the pen would be silly. It's there for those of you who may occasionally need a pen, or in that rare scenario where a pen makes more sense as an input method over typing or a mouse.

Would I say buying a Surface Pen is worth it as a Surface Laptop user? No. At least not for me. I don't take notes nearly enough on a Surface Pro, let alone on a Surface Laptop. However, when I did need it, it was super convenient and just made sense. I already had a Surface Pen thanks to my Surface Book. That's the only scenario where I can say using a Surface Pen on the Surface Laptop makes sense. Buying a new pen outright for the Surface Laptop seems wasteful, but using a pen you already have? Surprisingly useful when you need it.

Preorders for Micorsoft's new Surface Pen are now live at the Microsoft Store online. Don't expect to get wild with the colors, however: only the the platinum color is currently up for grabs.

Wacom is jumping onto the Surface train with its new $69.99 Bamboo Ink pen. The Bamboo Ink is exciting because it's one of the first "smartpens" on the market that supports Wacom's Universal Pen Framework (UPF). That framework means it can seamlessly shift between Microsoft Surface devices and Wacom Active ES (electrostatic) ones, giving artists and pros more choices.

I spent the last few days with the Bamboo Ink, and here is what I think.

The Bamboo Ink (CS321AK) is a digital-inking pen for modern PCs, including the Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4, and new Surface Pro, as well as Surface Book and Surface Studio. Besides bringing Wacom's well-known brand to the Surface line, artists and ink users can also use it on Wacom AES-enabled devices such as HP's Elite x360 or the Dell Precision 5285.

It does not work with the original Surface Pro or Surface Pro 2, which were based on Wacom EMR technology.

Microsoft's pen tech is based on N-trig. Before Microsoft bought N-trig, that company competed with Wacom in the PC pen space. Now, Microsoft's tech is branded as Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP), formerly known as DuoSense2 under N-trig.

Wacom's new standard is referred to as Active ES, and it is why people always ask which pens work with what devices. With MPP and AES pens on the market, it can get confusing for consumers.

With the UPF – first announced in March 2016 – the guesswork is removed because users can now switch between the two standards in the same pen. Bamboo Ink is the first to bring that feature to market.

How is Bamboo Ink better?

Bamboo Ink supports up to 4,096 pressure levels, which is a significant improvement from the Surface Pro 4's 1,024 levels. It also comes with interchangeable nibs in the box at three various levels (soft, medium, and firm).

Wacom is cagey on the exact specifications of Bamboo Ink, so the activation force is currently unknown (more on that below).

Wacom is also known for having a more triangular shape to its pens versus round barrel design as found in the Surface Pen. However, many artists may enjoy the more ergonomic Wacom design than the Surface's "metal tube" for long drawing sessions.

Like the Surface Pen, the Bamboo Ink supports Bluetooth so that users can program the top "eraser" button. There are also two side buttons that work with Windows Ink or Wacom's configuration software. However, unlike the new Surface Pen (due later in June) Bamboo Ink does not appear to support tilt features.

How do you switch between AES and MPP?

To jump between Wacom AES and Microsoft's Pen Protocol you press the two side buttons simultaneously for two seconds.

A faint blue LED behind the buttons tells you the mode has switched, but it's hard to see.

Bamboo Ink real-life use

For the last few days, I tested the Wacom Bamboo Ink on the following devices:

• HP EliteBook x360 G2 (AES).
• HP Spectre x360 4K (MPP).
• Dell Latitude 5285 (AES).
• Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (MPP).
• Microsoft Surface Studio (MPP).
• Microsoft Surface Book (MPP).

Although Wacom does not specify the activation force required to initiate a pen stroke, the force needed for the Bamboo Ink feels much lower than the current Surface Pro 4's pen. That means the Bamboo Ink registers ink on the screen with less pressure. That's a good thing, because it behaves more like a real pen would.

For this reason, and the increased levels of pressure sensitivity, the Bamboo Ink works better on current Surface devices. It's not an enormous difference, but that extra sensitivity goes a long way. However, you cannot customize the force-curve like you can with the Surface Pen due to the lack of proper software. It works well with Windows Ink though and supports all the features users expect.

Unfortunately, there is no magnet on Bamboo Ink, so you will not be able to stick it to the side of a Surface.

Whereas the Surface Pen has a very satisfying click for the top programmable button, the Bamboo Ink is a soft and bit mushy. Surface Pen requires more force to click – but it does click – whereas Bamboo Ink just depresses.

I also found a bigger advantage with Wacom AES devices such as the EliteBook x360 and Latitude 5285. There, the increased pressure levels and initiation force were much better than on the Surface Pro 4. In general, I find Wacom AES to be more accurate, with less latency, than the current-generation Surface Pro pen. That is the case here; the Bamboo Ink just flows, and it's a joy to use.

The one caveat is Surface Studio, which seems to have better pen support than Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book, likely due to a newer generation co-processor in the display. As a result, using Bamboo Ink feels fantastic on the Studio's ginormous screen.

I also prefer the triangular shape of the Bamboo Ink, which is more ergonomic than the Surface Pen. The pen itself is also matte black with a hint of soft-touch paint, and it feels great in hand.

Weight is distributed evenly with the Bamboo Ink. It weighs 19 grams versus the 21 grams of the Surface Pen. Both pens take a single AAAA battery to power the Bluetooth component.

There are no differences in latency – the time it takes the ink to register on a display – because that is dependent on the screen and PC's hardware, not the oen.

What about Surface Pen and Surface Pro (2017)?

My experience tells me Bamboo Ink is slightly better for current Surface Pen users, but Microsoft is stepping it up with Surface Pro for 2017.

The new Surface Pen ($99) also supports 4,096 pressure levels and adds in tilt support for all current Surface devices. Additionally, it only requires 9g of activation force, which is an improvement over the last generation. Going further, the new Surface Pro (2017) has just 21 milliseconds of latency due to the new co-processor that connects the GPU to the display digitizer. That's down from 40 milliseconds to 45 milliseconds on the Surface Pro 4.

I don't have the new Surface Pen, expected this summer, to review or compare to Bamboo Ink, unfortunately.

Bambo Ink review conclusion: Who should buy it?

I have nothing bad to say about the Wacom Bamboo Ink. It's priced below the new Surface Pen ($69 versus $99), and it even comes with optional nibs (Microsoft charges $20 for a similar Pen Tip Kit.

Not only does Bamboo Ink feel great, but for Surface owners there is a slight improvement in overall sensitivity compared to the existing Surface Pen ($59). You lose the magnet, but you gain a slightly more ergonomic pen that also works better with splendid angles.

New Microsoft Surface Pen: Everything you need to know

Likewise for devices that already support AES – you can see the list of tested and compatible PCs – I think the Bamboo Ink is a smart purchase if you use the pen and Windows Ink often.

Bamboo Ink is just better, with varying degrees all around.

If, however, you are thinking about buying the new Surface Pen or are getting the new Surface Pro, you may want to hold off until the reviews come. It appears that the new Surface Pen coupled with Surface Pro may be the best combination yet.

Either way, it's great to see Wacom and its UPF finally launch in the consumer market. Surface and Wacom AES users now have more choices and can jump quickly between devices without thinking about the technology. And if you just prefer Wacom's pen design, you can now use it with your Surface.

One of the coolest parts of the Surface Pro's reveal was the new Surface Pen, which has been improved in various ways.

Designed to complement the Surface Pro (2017), the Surface Pen benefits from the Pro's custom co-processor which reduces the latency between the pen and the screen to "imperceptible" levels. Additionally, the new Surface Pen supports tilt shading on the new Surface Pro, mimicking a real inking tool more closely.

Since many of you have been asking, it does seem that the new Surface Pen's tilt capabilities will be coming to previous Surface devices via Windows update.

As per the Surface Pen's US Microsoft Store listing, it says the following regarding tilt:

Whether that refers to all previous Surface devices with inking or just the more recent ones, we're still trying to find out, but it's pretty safe to presume that at least the Surface Book, Surface Studio, and perhaps Surface Pro 4 will all make the cut.

The new Surface Pen has 4,095 levels of pressure sensitivity, which is a massive boost from the previous versions. Microsoft says the new Surface Pen beats Apple's iPad Pro Pencil in every way, we'll have to test their claims once we get our review unit in the near future.

New Surface Pen

The new Surface Pen is designed to compliment the 2017 Surface Pro's next-generation screen, which takes advantage of unprecedentedly low latency inking thanks to new tech. Custom silicon in both the pen and the Surface Pro screen reduce the latency between your ink strokes and the display to levels "virtually imperceptible" to the human eye, according to Microsoft. The company also says the new Surface Pen is much more responsive than the Apple Pencil designed for the iPad Pro, and it benefits from a boost in pressure sensitivity at 4,096 levels, up from 1,024 in the previous version.

There are dozens of apps that leverage the Surface Pen, including Win32 programs such as Photoshop and Universal Windows Platform (UWP) tools like Sketchable. However, most of them work best on the Surface Book, Pro, or Studio, where the screen can be angled into flatter positions.

The Surface Laptop also features inking, but there's no way to lay the screen out flat without putting the laptop on its back ... awkward.

I used to use the Surface Pen in my old job to annotate sets of keys, as the IT guy for a chain of private schools. Rather than label the keys, I spread them out, took photographs using my Surface Pro, then annotated the pictures for each key. If the keys ever got lost or stolen, there'd be no way to know which key was for what door, without access to my annotated OneNote picture. This is one way the Surface Laptop's inking feature could still be useful, even without laying the screen out flat.

Microsoft has added a new gold-colored version of its Surface Pen to its previously released silver, black and dark blue versions of the stylus. The gold Surface Pen is currently on sale in the Microsoft Store for $59.99.

Aside from its gold color, there's nothing else that's different on this version of the Surface Pen. It's designed to work on the Surface 3, Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4, and Surface Book devices. It also still has 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity and offers users one click access to OneNote and Cortana on Windows 10. It also still comes with a Surface Pen Tip Kit, which gives users four different tip options. The gold version will be available in the Canada, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the U.S.

Microsoft has applied for a new patent on a PC stylus that recharges via a magnetic connection. The filing was noticed by the site Patently Mobile and it reveals what we may expect from the next round of Surface devices.

The new patent application shows a charging base for the pen, which is then stuck to it magnetically. From the application:

In plain English instead of just sticking to the device, it will also charge the pen. It is also observed that the charging base is not standalone and instead looks to be a module to be built into larger hardware.

Starting with the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book Microsoft let users attach the Surface Pen to the side of the device via a secure magnetic connection. The solution still results in the ability for the pen to come loose in a bag or be knocked off, but it is more elegant than the previous loop-sticker that was offered.

Microsoft has stated earlier that a superior in-body solution is not possible because the Surface is thinner than the pen.

However, the current pen is still very much like the old one that requires a AAAA battery to be replaced every few months. This design stands in contrast to the Apple Pencil, which requires the users to recharge the stylus awkwardly by plugging it directly into the iPad Pro. Apple has been heavily criticized for the bizarre charging method, and Microsoft may be trying to patent their way around the problem before Apple.

It is not entirely clear why Microsoft would need to make the pen rechargeable as the AAAA battery can last users six months or even up to a year. Microsoft may simply be getting a patent to an obvious solution to Apple's problem, or the next generation Surface Pen may require more power.

Either way, the patent fits right in with the Surface esthetic and we would not be shocked to see it arrive with the Surface Pro 5 and Surface Book 2. Those devices are not expected until fall 2016. However, a refreshed Surface 3 in the form of Surface 4 will likely come in the spring or early summer.

While the Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4 were launched in India today, not all the variants of the accessories will be available for customers in India.

Surface Pro 4 Type Cover

Apparently, Microsoft will sell the Surface Pro 4 Type Cover for Surface Pro 4 buyers, but those are the only Type Covers to go on sale. Even if you buy a Surface Pro 3, you'd need to buy the new Type Cover, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The Type Cover is sold at a price of ₹12,490 ($187).

However, Microsoft would only sell these Type Covers in two colors – Blue and Black. The other colors – Bright Blue, Teal, and Red, won't be available. Also, the Surface Pro 4 Type Cover with a fingerprint reader will not be sold in India.

Surface Pen

While the Surface Pro 4 comes bundled with a Surface Pen, if you are buying a Surface Pro 3, you'd need to buy the Surface Pen separately. The new Surface Pen comes bundled with the Pen Tip Kit. While the new Surface Pen is available in three colors – Silver, Black, and Dark Blue – in the U.S., Indian customers will only be able to purchase the Silver color variant. The Surface Pen costs ₹5,990 ($89).

Surface Dock

Surface Dock instantly transforms the Surface Pro 4 into a desktop PC. All you need to do is to plug in the SurfaceConnect cable to charge your device and access external monitor, keyboard, mouse, and more. The Surface Dock will be aimed at enterprise users, and available for ₹20,990 ($314).

Looks like a small but massively significant update has gone out for the Surface app. Version 10.0.342 is now live in the store and it is going to make a lot of folks happy.

The Surface app, which comes pre-installed on all new Surfaces, finally now lets you customize the rear 3-way button on the new Surface pen for Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 (it also works with Surface 3 and Pro 3).

Heading into the app you can find sub-sections for Button Customization including options for single-click, double-click, and press and hold. Here are the new choices:

• Single-click: OneNote (default), Disabled, Launch a store app, Launch a desktop app
• Double-click: Screenshot (default), Disabled, Launch a store app, Launch a desktop app
• Press and hold: Cortana (default), Disabled, Launch a store app, Launch a desktop app

When choosing Launch a store app a sub-menu pops up letting you choose any install app on your system. Same for a desktop app.

In the past, Microsoft let users choose between OneNote (Store app) and OneNote (desktop), but that was it. Even that feature was removed with the Surface Book and Surface Pro 4.

Now, however, the company is making a nice comeback by giving users the ability to make those buttons do whatever they want, which is very important for artists and engineers who would prefer to launch a specific professional app.

Update: As others have noted, this app appears to let users only modify the settings on the new Surface pen and not the old one that comes with the Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3. However, those users can buy and use this newer pen on their devices and benefit from all the new features.

Update 2: Some readers are confirming even with a new pen that this does not work on older Surfaces hinting that this is a Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 feature for now.

There's even a digital eraser on top in case you make a mistake. The new Surface Pen is a great tool, and it's even better if you know these 3 shortcuts.

1. Click the top button once to open OneNote. A blank OneNote page shows up, where your handwritten notes can also be converted to text and shared.

2. Double-click the top button for a screenshot. Snap a quick picture of something you're working on and share it with OneNote.

3. Click and hold the top button to open Cortana. The personal digital assistant can offer time, people, and location-based reminders or even help you send a quick email.

What's great about the latest Surface Pen is that it's also compatible with the older Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3 along with the newer Surface Book and Surface Pro 4. However, the 1024 levels of pressure are only supported on the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book.

The new Microsoft Surface Pen ships with the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book, but you can also buy it separately. It ships by October 26th for $59.99 and includes the Pen Tip Kit. The kit lets you choose from one of 4 tips. Use medium tip that has the familiarity of a #2 pencil, or swap it with a low friction tip similar to a fine point pen.

Even if you opt to hold onto your Surface Pro 3, rather than upgrading to the new Surface Pro 4, you can thankfully take advantage of some new accessories that are now available for pre-order. Those include the new Surface Pro 4 Type Cover and the refreshed Surface Pen.

The Surface Pro Type Cover is up for pre-order on on the Microsoft Store, with a ship date estimate of October 26. The cover goes for $130 for the base version, and $150 for the option with Fingerprint ID on board. If you're looking for a splash of color, the base model comes in black, blue, bright blue, or red, while the Fingerprint ID model is only available in black. Both versions feature mechanical keys and an enlarged trackpad, and are compatible with both the Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4.

Next up is the new Surface Pen, which features reduced latency 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity. The new Surface Pen also comes with a pen tip kit that lets you swap out the tip of your Surface Pen with one four different tips to change up the feel and smoothness of your writing. You can also click the Surface Pen button to quickly pull up OneNote, or click and hold to summon Cortana. The new Surface Pen is available at the Microsoft Store now for $60 in silver, black, or dark blue — though the silver option is the only one currently up for pre-order. The expected ship date is October 26.

During Microsoft's Windows 10 hardware press event today in New York City, the company has officially announced the new version of the Surface Pen made for the just revealed Surface Pro 4 tablet.

Microsoft will include the new Surface Pen with the tablet, which comes with a full year of battery life. It will include a tail eraser with stickiness and friction. The pen will also include 1024 levels of pressure and magnetically latches to the side of the tablet. Users can also double-click on the Surface Pen button to launch the OneNote app, and users can hold down to activate Cortana in Windows 10

The new Surface Pen comes in five colors, and it will support interchangeable pen tips to emulate the feel of a pencil, ballpoint, felt tip pen, and more. Microsoft said that 50% of the current Surface Pro 3 members use the current Surface Pen.

Taking screenshots is one of the most common tasks I need to know when using new devices. It's useful for how-to guides, troubleshooting, or sharing fun images with friends. Taking screenshots is very similar among Windows 8.1 devices. I've just received the Surface 3 and use six methods to take a screenshot.

Method 1: The easiest way to take a screenshot on the Surface 3 is by pressing and holding the Windows button and then pressing the volume down button. The screen dims for a second and the image is saved in the Screenshots folder of the Pictures library.

Method 2: Using the Surface 3 Type Cover, press and hold the Windows key, then press the PrtScn key. The screen also dims for a second and saves the image in the Screenshots folder.

Method 3: Using the Surface 3 Type Cover, you can also just press the PrtScn button. The screen does not dim briefly with this method or saves the screenshot in the Pictures library. It just copies the whole screen to your clipboard. You can then paste it to another application like Paint or Photoshop.

Method 4: Press and hold the Alt key then press PrtScn to copy just the active window instead of the whole screen. This method also does not dim the screen or saves the image your library. Instead, the screenshot is copied to your clipboard which you can paste to another application.

Method 5: Using the Surface Pen, double-click the top button. Select what you want to capture in the screenshot by dragging the tip of the pen from one corner to the opposite corner. When you lift the pen tip, your selection appears in a new page in OneNote. You can then add more notes or drawing to the image.

Method 6: In desktop mode of the Surface 3, there's a handy built-in app called Snipping Tool. Tap or click the arrow next to the New button, choose the kind of snip you want, and then pick the area of your screen that you want to capture. The screenshot is automatically copied to the Snipping Tool window, which you can save.

Unlike the Surface Pro 3, Windows won't prompt you to pair Surface Pen with Surface 3 during setup. Instead, you'll need to pair Surface Pen with your Surface 3 manually. Don't worry, though. It's very easy to pair. Follow our step-by-step instructions and watch our how-to video.

1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and tap or click Settings.
2. Tap or click Change PC settings, tap or click PC and devices, and then tap or click Bluetooth.
3. Make sure that Bluetooth is on.
4. Hold down the top button on the Surface Pen for seven seconds, until the light in the middle of the pen clip starts to flash.
5. When the pen appears in the list of Bluetooth devices, tap or click it, and tap or click Pair.

That's it! You should now be able to use the Surface Pen with your Surface 3. You can quickly confirm the connection by pressing the top button on the Surface Pen. This should automatically open OneNote.

The Surface Pen is sold separately from the Surface 3 while it is already included with the Surface Pro 3. Microsoft has released it in new colors, so you can grab it red, dark blue, or black, instead of the original silver one. The pen loop is also included, but there are actually other ways to attach the Surface Pen to your Surface 3.

The Surface 3 is pretty much a slimmed down version of the Surface Pro 3. You get the same design, same 3:2 form factor, even support similar accessories. One noticeable difference is the kickstand on the Surface 3 is a little more limited with just three different positions compared to the variable positions on the Surface Pro 3.

Overall, we're very happy with the Surface 3. It's a very fun device to use. It's not as powerful as the Surface Pro 3, but it's not meant to be. The Surface 3 has a lower starting price than the Surface Pro 3, so that makes it very appealing. We'll have a full review very soon. Are you looking to buy the Surface 3? Microsoft has now confirmed they have acquired technology from Israel-based company N-trig, which created the tech behind the Surface Pen stylus. The pen is included in the Surface Pro 3 and is sold as an optional accessory for the upcoming Surface 3 tablet.

N-trig was founded in 1999 and has been developing its digital stylus technology for some time. Microsoft had already invested money in N-trig, and owned about 6.1% of the company before the acquisition, which was previously rumored to happen back in February. In a statement, Stevie Bathiche of the Surface development team said:
