Today is the last day of this week's lengthy Amazon Prime Day sales event, and that means it's also the last day to take advantage of its excellent deals on popular games for Xbox, PC, and other platforms. In these final hours of the annual sale, though, I stumbled across a steep discount on the Ultimate Edition of Red Dead Redemption 2 that's even better than Amazon's — a true "anti-Prime Day" deal that knocks the price from $100 to just $18.39 at CDKeys.

If you have a capable gaming PC to use, that's the most affordable way to dive into Rockstar Games' beloved open-world action-adventure. It's a deal so good that it feels like highway robbery to pull the trigger on, but you'd better do so ASAP if you're interested; once Prime Day ends tonight, there's no telling how long it'll last.

This deal seems too good to be true — but it's real

In any discussion about the best games ever made, Red Dead Redemption 2 is one that's all-but-guaranteed to get some passionate mentions. The 2018 Rockstar Games title won countless awards and accolades and was a worldwide hit, and also accrued well over 200 perfect review scores.

Notably, one of them came from our review, in which we gave it 5/5 stars and called the game a "Wild West masterpiece" that "represents a generational leap for the gaming industry" and "almost feels beyond the standard definition of a 'game,' bordering on raw simulation."

Indeed, Red Dead Redemption 2 is something of a sim, with nearly every step of the open-world adventure giving players a system, mechanic, or NPC to interact with in some way. At times, I honestly think the game goes too far with its prompting, but I can't deny that even seven years later, it's also more engaging than most titles in the genre as a result of it.

Another huge draw of Red Dead Redemption 2 is the game's story, which I can confidently say is both Rockstar's best and one of the most beautifully written narratives in all of gaming. Brimming with heart, character, and emotion, it's set in 1899 — 12 years before the events of the original Red Dead Redemption — it puts you in the boots of Arthur Morgan, an outlaw in the Van der Linde gang.

As Arthur, you'll be forced to rob and fight alongside the rest of the gang's members as lawmen and bounty hunters close in in the twilight of America's Wild West era in environments inspired by the United States' West, Midwest, and Southern regions. The heart of the story revolves around Arthur being forced to grapple with his values and his loyalty to the gang, with the two coming into escalating conflict as the narrative progresses.

No spoilers here, but it's simply phenomenal — an epic tale supplemented by several pieces of extra story content included with the Ultimate Edition, along with an innumerable number of side quests and activities to engage with while exploring the open world. Notably, the Ultimate Edition also includes several exclusive outfits in both the single-player Story Mode and the Red Dead Online multiplayer experience, along with some minor gameplay buffs to Arthur in the former to make him more effective in combat.

All in all, Red Dead Redemption 2 is nothing less than a triumph, and a must-play title to check out while we're all waiting for Rockstar to release Grand Theft Auto 6. Note that if you're on Xbox, you can get the Ultimate Edition for just $20 at Amazon while Prime Day is active, with the Standard Edition only $15 at Amazon. The Standard Edition is also just $14.29 at CDKeys on PC, though I strongly recommend spending a few dollars extra to get the Ultimate Edition deal I've spotlighted here.

Rockstar Games is not the studio it once was. Known for mega-hits like Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, and Max Payne, the publisher subsidiary has gradually reduced its footprint in recent years, focusing its efforts almost entirely on GTA Online. The gaps between the development of new games seem to grow ever larger, and has become a bit of a meme in recent years, with Grand Theft Auto 6 nowhere to be found.

Even still, Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Online remain hugely popular service games. As sandbox experiences, there's virtually nothing out there that offers a similar experience. Red Dead Online is the ultimate cowboy simulation experience, but Rockstar has, over the years, apparently wound down the development of the game. The most recent update, Blood Money, was all the way back in July 2021, and even that wasn't exactly well-received by the community.

Today, I noticed #SaveRedDeadOnline was trending on Twitter. Fans of the game are fighting to be heard by a largely radio-silent Rockstar, whose only communique on Red Dead Online was to reveal a lackluster bonus EXP event for the next few weeks. Fans have, apparently, had enough.

By comparison, Grand Theft Auto Online receives far larger updates, adding new items, mission types, and other features to keep players engaged and returning to the game. A recent GTA:O update, The Contract, even featured cameos from the likes of Dr. Dre, It makes sense that fans of Red Dead feel a tad neglected.

Take-Two Interactive in general seems to have been struggling to find its place in an era of subscription services and service-driven games. Despite the runaway success of GTAV and GTA Online, the company's share price has dipped a fair bit over the past year, as it grapples with a general lack of direction and the catastrophe that was the recent Grand Theft Auto Trilogy remakes. Although, hilariously, as I finished penning this sentence, it was revealed that the publisher is buying up controlling shares in mobile publisher Zynga at a valuation of $12.7 billion dollars. Perhaps that's where the budget for Red Dead Online went? (Jokes.)

It remains to be seen if Rockstar will respond to the #SaveRedDeadOnline outcry, but we've reached out to try and grab a comment from them.

Starting December 1, 2020, Red Dead Online will be available as a standalone game, separate from the full Red Dead Redemption 2 experience. Players will be able to play everything Red Dead Online has to offer, complete with all future updates, just like with the base game, but won't be paying full cost for the privilege. Players will have the option of buying Red Dead Redemption 2: Story Mode (the single-player content) as an in-game purchase through Red Dead Online if they want.

If you're interested, Red Dead Online will be available on the Microsoft Store, Playstation Store, Rockstar Games Launcher, Epic Games Store, and Steam for an introductory price of $5, which will last until February 15, 2021. After that, Red Dead Online will be available at its full price of $20, which is still a third of the usual cost of the base game. That being said, the full Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently on sale for over half off due to a Black Friday, making this the best time to buy if you're interested in the best western game around.

Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online will be fully compatible with next-gen consoles like the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PS5 through backwards compatibility.

It's clear Rockstar Games is onto something, with millions of players still actively enjoying GTA Online and Red Dead Online, the multiplayer counterparts to GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. On July 28th, Red Dead Online will be getting a relatively large update with a Frontier Pursuit, a new Role and Outlaw Past, and a ton of changes and fixes from the community's feedback. A little later on, GTA Online will also get a sizeable update that will offer new experiences from the game's existing (and massive) pool of content.

Take-Two Interactive has posted its financial results for Q4 and the fiscal year as a whole. Total net bookings for the quarter reached $729, which is up 49% year-over-year. Total net bookings for the year reached $2.99 billion, up slightly from $2.93 billion the previous year.

Multiple titles also crossed significant sales milestones. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, Grand Theft Auto V has crossed 130 million copies sold, up from 120 million sold in the previous quarter. This places Grand Theft Auto V directly behind Mojang Studios' Minecraft, which recently crossed 200 million copies sold.

Another Rockstar Games title, Red Dead Redemption 2, crossed new thresholds and reached 31 million copies sold, up from 29 million the previous quarter. Meanwhile, Gearbox Software's Borderlands 3 has crossed 10 million copies sold, up from nearly 8 million earlier in 2020. The Outer Worlds from Obsidian Entertainment is also doing well, reaching 2.5 million copies sold.

Looking ahead, Take-Two expects net bookings around $2.55 billion for the next fiscal year, with a "light" release schedule for new games. Digital sales share is expected to rise significantly to 68% of game sales. During the financial call covering the earnings report, Take-Two noted that it expects to release a staggering 93 games over the next five years.

Updated May 7, 2020: Red Dead Redemption 2 is now available on Xbox Game Pass. Usually, games are available at 8 PM EDT the previous day, but this title appears to be the exception.

Microsoft has announced that Rockstar Games' latest open-world western, Red Dead Redemption 2, is headed to Xbox Game Pass on May 7. The Netflix-style subscription for Xbox games welcomes the hit to its rotating library of titles, included under its flat $10 monthly subscription on Xbox One consoles.

Red Dead Redemption 2 first hit Xbox One in late 2018, launching to near-universal praise among critics for its vast open-world sandbox. Developed by Rockstar Games, talent also behind the Grand Theft Auto series, the title sees players assume the role of Arthur Morgan and a crew of outlaws traversing America for survival. That provides the backdrop for a deep narrative spanning dozens of hours, and a multiplayer component under Red Dead Online.

Red Dead Redemption 2's arrival also sees the departure of Grand Theft Auto V, added to the rotating Xbox Game Pass lineup earlier this year. The title, also among Xbox bestsellers this generation, remains at a 20% discount until May 7, for those looking to lock down a digital copy.

Red Dead Redemption 2 adds further value to Microsoft's subscription service, featuring over 200 games on Xbox One, with entry-level deals providing access for as low as $1. Xbox Game Pass soon includes Red Dead Redemption 2, alongside top Microsoft series like Halo, Gears of War, and Forza, for a single buck.

Take-Two Interactive has shared its Q3 2020 financial report, showing the performance of multiple different games and the company as a whole. Of immediate note is Grand Theft Auto V, which has crossed 120 million units sold-in. Grand Theft Auto V was previously established as the best-selling game of the decade in the U.S. Grand Theft Auto Online exceeded Take-Two's expectations due to the launch of the Diamond Casino update.

While the GTA juggernaut continues, western adventure Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold in 29 million copies. The PC version launched late in 2019, which helped propel this number up. Borderlands 3 has sold in almost 8 million units, up from 7 million back in November 2019. The Outer Worlds has crossed 2 million copies sold in since launch, which "significantly succeeded expectations."

Take-Two also noted that the new studio Cloud Chamber, established to work on the next BioShock game, "will be in development for the next several years."

When asked about the departure of Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said that "Rockstar Games individually, and Take-Two as a whole, are a team sport. The team leader at Rockstar Games is Sam Houser, who founded the label, and we believe in the entire team, led by Sam. We feel really great about it, even as we wish Dan well on the next chapter in his career."

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a cinematic action-adventure game set in the Wild West. The title takes place in 1899, a time which brought stability to the United States, but also resulted in a drastic shift for many individuals who lived close to the untamed frontier. Beforehand, the federal government chose not to heavily intervene in these territories, going all the way to California.

However, the need for consolidation and some form of control — especially when states like Montana and Utah were admitted into the Union — triggered an end to the uncontrolled lawlessness that prevailed during those times. What many people considered true freedom was coming to an end.

If you're a fan of the multiplayer mode, Red Dead Online, you'll be happy to know that there's a winter event going on. Snow is falling in places you would have never expected, and it looks amazing. The Rockstar Games team has really nailed the look of winter.

While there is a lot to do, if you play Red Dead Online between December 23 and January 6, you'll get a number of amazing gifts. Just make sure you at least log in on December 23, then again on December 31 to get them all. The rewards include gift chests, guns, ammunition, and experience boosts. It's definitely the season to get into this amazing game!

One day I decided to pick up a bounty — I had nothing better to do. So I followed the map to a cliffside near a river where I found the criminal in question: a self-proclaimed medicine man whose snake oil led to many deaths in the nearby town.

Of course, bringing him in alive wasn't going to be easy. He wasn't going to come along willingly, and even worse, after resisting, he slipped and fell into the raging river below. I attempted to chase after him, galloping down the river banks. He wasn't going super fast, and I knew where to go, so this sounded easy.

Unfortunately, my horse (named Hey Thur Horsey because I'm creative) wouldn't turn when I needed him to. When I tried to cross the river, my horse got stuck on a rock. When I tried to move him beyond it, nothing happened. When I was finally able to move him, my horse slowly trudged forward, turned slowly, and attempted to cross. However, by then, my bounty had died, and I had to restart.

There's little difference between Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC and on consoles. The game is still a sprawling, technological marvel that shines most in the meandering moments. It's a title that's easy to get lost in; even if you have a quest to do, you'll spend a while tracking the deer that got away or turning off the road to see what you find. What does differ is how that technology works.

Red Dead Redemption 2 came out in 2018, so this review isn't comprehensive. I don't care about the story, the characters, the pacing, or the attention that Rockstar games paid to make sure horses will poop in the middle of rendered cutscenes. What I was curious about was how the game played on PC. Is it worth buying again to play at your desk or a good purchase for people who play strictly on PC rigs?

It's all still an achievement in games technology. However, with new controls and some new features, including a more streamlined photo mode and new missions, the game feels both fresh and old, heavy and clunky, but also smooth. I can feel relaxed knowing I'll hit my target with my rifle but frustrated because movement slows the game down.

To address the big horse in the room

If you read Windows Central often, you might have noticed that I had issues playing this game. You might've noticed that a lot of players have been having issues, to the point where Rockstar Games had to issue multiple patches for both the launcher and the game. I had to wait a week to play the game unencumbered, and even then, I was plagued with the game not booting unless I turned off my antivirus software and occasional crashes.

Rockstar took a week to release an official statement on the matter, along with a note on a fix specifically for NVIDIA users. As of this writing, most of the technical issues are gone. I can launch the game and play it on medium to high settings. My game would constantly crash when entering a new town. Every time I would die, or the game would crash, my Arthur would respawn without his hat. Why couldn't Arthur keep his hat on? I have no idea. Either way, all of those issues are fixed.

In the long run, this launch debacle will become a blip in the long history of the Red Dead Redemption franchise — another entry in the long list of games with tumultuous launches and imperfect ports. It's not unplayable like other games, even released this year, have been. This was many people's Game of the Year in 2018; a week of constant patches and updates isn't going to tarnish the series' reputation.

Now that we have that out of the way, let's get into the game.

Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC What I liked

I first started playing PC games more out of necessity than preference — it was more cost-efficient to put money into a proper rig that I could also use for work than to buy a console — but I've become keen on the controls. My aim is more accurate, and I feel like I have more control over slight movements. Being able to hit one key to break into a sprint feels more efficient than clicking on a joystick, or having to hit a trigger button and another one to activate an ability. Being on PC gives you a larger range of play, which is why I stuck with it.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was an already complex game on console. There are so many things the player is capable of doing with that it feels like the system was almost built for the advantages of PC. There's a key for just about every interaction; almost the entire keyboard is utilized. Press "H" to whistle for your horse, press "G" to pet your horse, press the spacebar to read a letter you pick up.

The extensive control scheme does result in some confusion, especially early in the game, as you go through the (extremely long) tutorial. I found myself looking into the control settings a few times to remind myself that "V" wasn't melee like it usually is in other games. There are also some instances where the same action might need different inputs based on the context. Going into different interactions might require different controls -- spacebar in one or "R" in another, for example. This would've been more of an issue if the scenarios where this occurred weren't so minor.

Sometimes, however, the controls can be too complicated, especially when the UI isn't always the clearest. It's tough to tell when you have to click on the left or right mouse, or when you have to tap a button repeatedly to perform an action. This resulted in some more serious mistakes.

Otherwise, the game and the controls just work. With a mouse and keyboard, I find that I can make small adjustments or aim more precisely. Since Red Dead Redemption is the type of game filled with moments where these adjustments can mark the difference between life and death, it feels effective. Dead Eye, the feature that allows you to slow down time and set up shots, is, therefore, more effective.

All of that is made better by how optimized the game is now on PC. Minus the aforementioned launch issues, if you're able to run the game on higher settings, you'll see just how much effort was put into making sure the light reflecting off the water hits your eye just right, or how added detail on vegetation or fauna makes the whole environment look more photorealistic. There isn't any ray tracing here (the technology that uses machine learning to render realistic lighting effects in real-time), but it feels like there is. Rockstar also improved draw distances so you can see even further into the already beautifully-rendered horizon. Even if you have a lower-end PC, you can take advantage of what the PC version has to offer graphically.

A bonus to all of this is the improved photo mode. While the console version had one, it was limited to Arthur's in-game camera. Here, all you have to do is hit F6, and you'll be able to adjust filters, depth of field, angles, and anything else you want. With a click of the mouse, your photo will save, which is a great way to take advantage of how great everything looks.

Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC What I didn't like

Being on PC opens up a whole new world of controls to use and settings to play around with, but it comes at an overwhelming price. It sounds weird to emphasize, but there is just too much.

As evidenced by how much the game gives you to do, Rockstar almost put too much into how you can optimize the game. The settings are numerous and confusing for the less technically minded of us. Red Dead Redemption 2 will attempt to choose the optimal settings based on your PC specs, but it's not exact, so there's still a lot to play around with. For example, I found that dropping the recommended graphics API from Vulkan down to DirectX 12 did wonders for consistency. To ensure the game absolutely did not crash, I also lowered the aspect ratio and resolution. The game still looked great.

Along with all the graphics settings are ones for your controls, where you can redo the key bindings. This is standard in most games, but because there are, once again, so many controls, to fix it up becomes overwhelming, or a case of trial and error. Most of the default key bindings worked for me, or I got used to them, but some — like how Caps Lock is used to activate Dead Eye, aren't optimal.

You'll most likely want to go into these settings too because, unfortunately, the one area where the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2 suffers a bit is in movement. It always felt heavy, which is in line with Rockstar's mission statement concerning realism, but it feels even heavier here.

I've been thinking a lot about why this is. It seems to come down to how movement works on a PC. Since it's more precise with WASD and a mouse, it means you're making overcorrections more often, which can cause either Arthur or his horse to, for instance, run into a rock and stop dead in their tracks. This isn't always a problem and can be rectified with practice, but it's still a bummer. Combined with the now excellent shooting, Arthur feels like both the greatest sharpshooter in the Old West and a clumsy buffoon who doesn't know how to ride a horse. That disparity can take you out of the experience Rockstar so desperately wants you to feel.

Bottom line

Red Dead Redemption 2 was many players' Game of the Year in 2018 for a reason. Minus issues surrounding how the studio crunched on seemingly unimportant features to get the game out, it's astounding. Its PC port only shows how real that all was. Not only does it look great on the PC, it somehow looks better.

The technological issues at launch put a damper on the whole release, but now that most of them have been fixed, it might be a game worth picking up. With new features and new missions, it might even be worth the purchase for fans who already owned it on a console. There are some weird issues with the controls and settings, but the whole thing adds up to what the game clearly wants to be: an immersive open-world campaign set in the Old West that attempts to recreate the highs and lows of the experience for modern audiences.

Arthur can barely ride his horse to pick up that bounty, but he's still killer with a rifle. And he can ride that clumsy horse that loves to poop into the beautifully rendered horizon. Isn't that what Red Dead Redemption 2 is all about?

• The input lag is also higher compared to Xbox One X.

Google Stadia is a game streaming service that launched today. It features 22 games like Rage 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2, with a couple more promised by the end of the year. While this selection pales in comparison with Microsoft's Project xCloud, which offers 50 games already, the question a lot of gamers are asking is how does the visual quality compare to Xbox One X.

The Xbox One X is a few years old now, but it's still the "most powerful console in the world." It features 6 teraflops (tflops) of processing power, whereas Stadia has over 10 tflops. Given the power difference, you would expect games to look much better on Stadia than they do on Xbox One X, but shockingly enough, that's not the case. Before we discuss Digital Foundry's findings, let's preface this discussion by saying that Stadia offers a video stream. The fact that it's a video of a game running on hardware located hundreds of miles away means that the image quality will be compressed and have artifacts. It won't look as good as a native 4K experience being pushed directly to your TV. Games that are mostly static like Kine will look great, but motion-heavy experiences like Shadow of the Tomb Raider will appear blurry.

Digital Foundry started off by comparing input lag on Xbox One X and Stadia. Since Xbox One X doesn't beam an image from the cloud, the input lag is a lot less. Even games like Destiny 2, which run at 60 frames per second (FPS) on Stadia and 30 FPS on Xbox One X, exhibited more input lag on Stadia. This is surprising because increasing the frame rate usually halves the input lag. Destiny 2's input lag on Xbox One X was 100 milliseconds (ms) and 144 ms on Stadia. This can make aiming, even in 60 FPS, a little difficult.

However, if you compare 60 FPS games like Mortal Kombat 11 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider between the two devices, the findings remain the same. Mortal Kombat 11 exhibited 78 ms of input lag on Xbox One X compared to 122 ms on Stadia. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, when the 60 FPS option was engaged, exhibited 83 ms input lag on Xbox One X, but 139 ms on Stadia. If you choose to go with Resolution Mode on Stadia for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, then the input lag goes over 200 ms, which is essentially unplayable for hardcore gamers.

Now comes the part about resolution. According to Google, all games on Stadia can run at 4K resolution and 60 FPS. Digital Foundry found out that that wasn't the case. Destiny 2 may run at 60 FPS on Stadia, but it's locked to 1080p. This means that it looks incredibly blurry on a 4K display since it's being upscaled and is just a video stream. The Xbox One X version of Destiny 2 runs at native 4K resolution, but it's locked to 30 FPS. The same applies to Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2 runs at native 4K resolution on Xbox One X and is locked to 30 FPS. The Stadia version, if you try to play it with a Chromecast Ultra, renders at 1440p and 30 FPS. So playing the game on a large display is a bad idea because the image quality is much worse than even the PlayStation 4 Pro port. Oddly enough, Digital Foundry said that if you used Google Chrome on PC, the game renders at 60 FPS at a lower resolution.

Given the power gap between Xbox One X and Stadia, we would expect all games to be 4K 60 FPS on Google's hardware, but that's not the case. It's unclear if this is due to difficult development tools or problems with the servers. Hopefully, Google offer more clarification soon because the company's 4K 60 FPS claims fall flat when it comes to Destiny 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2. If you were looking into purchasing Stadia hoping that it would offer better visuals, keep in mind that it offers better frame rates, but that advantage is offset by the increased input lag which makes aiming in Destiny 2 a little difficult, especially in player vs. player encounters.

Red Dead Redemption 2 hasn't had the best launch on PC due to some widespread technical issues. Rockstar Games has been releasing patch notes and frequent fixes since launch day, but hasn't publicly acknowledged the problems until today.

The company released a statement on Twitter Wednesday apologizing for the launch, along with a promise that it's working quickly to get the game in running order.

"We sincerely apologize for this temporary inconvenience and will update you as soon as we have more information to share," the statement read. "We want everyone to be able to experience Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC as we intended as soon as possible."

The statement also noted that the team has been "working as quickly as possible to address issues that have impacted the launch" in both the game and in the Rockstar Launcher.

It noted that a lot of the issues have been cleared up, but there are still lingering issues with computers that use NVIDIA graphics drivers or GPUs.

Either way, anybody who plays the game on PC this week through the holidays will receive a gift: a care package for Red Dead Online that includes the Prieto Poncho, provisions, and ammo. More details on the package will release in the future.

I've been attempting to play the game since launch and can confirm a lot of these problems. The Rockstar Launcher couldn't open the game. Even if you got that working, the game still might crash due to CPU spikes. Some common fixes involved shutting off your anti-virus software and running the game in adminstrator mode. I'm also still running into issues into Week 2, but I have an NVIDIA GPU.

The fix for computers using NVIDIA components is expected to come along today, so look out for our review of the PC version soon!

I would have loved to be on my way towards a full review of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the PC by now. Alas, that was not meant to be.

The open-world game, which came out in 2018, was finally ported over to PC this week, and the launch, to put it frankly, has been a mess. If you check out our article about all the launch issues, you'll get a glimpse of the kinds of problems I've been dealing with, but it's more than that.

Rockstar launched a game that was fundamentally broken at launch and couldn't be played optimally or at all by a vast amount of players. The sheer size of the game alone could slow down a PC, but to top it off with all these issues is disappointing. A game should be playable at launch, regardless of any other problems.

I pre-loaded the game over the weekend, an approximate 112GB download. I was able to start playing on launch day (the review codes given to the press did not unlock until launch day). However, I spent around three hours trying to get the game to work. I tried everything, from what Rockstar posted on its own support website to tips in forums. In the end, in order to get the game to work at all I had to do just about all of it: turn off my anti-virus software and firewall, run both the launcher and the game in administrator mode, tweak the settings in Task Manager so that the game didn't use every CPU core, verify the integrity of the game files (which required another huge download), mess around with some advanced graphics settings, and run it all in Safe Mode. Running it in Safe Mode meant I had to deal with 640x480 resolution and low settings throughout.

In fact, the only error I didn't manage to get was the one that said Rockstar Game Services were unavailable. At one point, the game crashed so hard that I had to rest both my integrated graphics card and my NVIDIA video card.

This all seemed to come from an issue where the game caused significant CPU spikes. When the game ran normally, it only managed to use about 30% of my CPU. During these other times, however, it used more than 100%.

Even then I was only able to get it up on the lowest settings, which is unacceptable considering how my peripherals compare to the recommended specifications listed on Rockstar's website. I don't have the latest and greatest parts for my rig, but I have a ninth-generation Intel i7-9700K with eight cores, which is double the amount of the i7-4770K, which Rockstar recommends. My CPU is also five years newer than the i7-4770K, which should give you a basic idea of its capabilities. As for my video card, I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660, which also trumps the recommended GTX 1060.

I went into this game thinking I'll be able to play it on high to medium settings, only to find I could barely play it at all.

For now, though, things seem to be running as they should. Today I received a 3GB patch, which reportedly fixed the issues I was having with the game crashing due to just having my anti-virus software on. Since Tuesday, Rockstar has released a few updates in an attempt to fix the issues.

I can now run Windows Defender and keep my firewall running. The game will also run at the optimized settings, which on my PC is a mix of high and medium settings throughout.

OK but now the game runs, right?

Now that it actually runs, I can say that the game lives up to the high standards set by the console version. The amount of detail on display is stunning, and it's tough to revel in it on a console. On a PC, you're up close with the graphics and can pick out all the little things that make this world come alive. Not all games need beautiful water reflections or to be able to see the decal on Arthur Morgan's jacket, but it's astounding when you can.

A quick benchmark test (which is built into the graphics settings in the game) said I was getting, on average, a smooth 60 frames per second (FPS). Other advanced options within the game allow you to choose a graphics API. The game crashed when I used Vulkan, but moving it to DirectX 12 fixed those issues, and the performance is similar. If you're lucky, you can run the game in 4K.

A great addition to the PC version of the game is the Photo Mode. Hit a button (F6 by default but you can remap your key bindings) and you can take a picture of Arthur and his crew at any moment, tweak multiple settings, and save it to your computer. You can change the depth of field, give a photo some old-timey filters, and I don't think every game needs a social account, but being able to quickly upload photos to the social club (and it is quite quick) is a bonus.

I'm not too far in the game yet, but the one complaint I have is that there are almost too many controls. This is an issue apparent on consoles, too, since there's a lot you can do in Red Dead Redemption II. It's tough sometimes to keep all my controls straight since I feel like I'm using the majority of my keyboard.

That sums up my thoughts on the game so far: it's a lot. Sometimes this is for the game's benefit since the huge draw of Red Dead Redemption II is its complexity. You can do just about anything in this game, and it pushes the idea of what's possible in an open-world setting. Other times it feels overwhelming, especially when you consider the options.

I also have to wonder if its intensive nature, which requires a good if not great PC rig, is to its detriment. How many people will successfully be able to play the game? If Reddit is any indication, the game runs fine on much lower settings (which I can confirm since I was forced into Safe Mode), so this looks to be a non-issue, but we'll see how it all runs now that everything, you know, works.

Update: Nov. 5, 2019: Rockstar Games has issued an update that should fix player problems with the Rockstar Launcher. This patch fixes the different crashes and error messages players were experiencing, as well as the need to verify player data.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has come to PC via the Rockstar Launcher and Epic Games Store, yet some players are reporting major issues in trying to start the game. A handful of these problems are fairly innocuous, like the chunky Arthur Morgan. Others are far more problematic and are keeping players from doing anything in game at all.

The Rockstar Launcher in particular is giving some players problems, causing the game not to open and players to receive the message that "Red Dead Redemption 2 exited unexpectedly" or "The Rockstar Launcher exited unexpectedly." One of our editors, Carli Velocci, is also unable to get the game to start, even in safe mode and is receiving these same error messages. Despite the game not starting, Carli also noted that it is causing her CPU to essentially max out, which other players on Reddit have also noted.

She was able to fix her issues by turning off her anti-virus software, verifying the integrity of the files in the Launcher, running the program as an administrator and, finally, launching the game in Safe Mode, which is requested after the game crashes the first time.

Rockstar suggests a number of fixes, including making sure that the player's graphics drivers are upt ot date and to run the game as an administrator. You can find some others here. The Reddit thread linked above also notes that disabling antivirus software and updating Bios had varying degrees of success.

While players using the Epic Games Store are reporting some performance problems as well, it seems like the Rockstar Launcher is the main issue faced at the moment. We'll continue to monitor this situation and provide updates is a solution is made known or Rockstar Games issues a statement. Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to Steam as well, though we don't know when except that it is slated for sometime in December. It's not a small game on PC, requiring 150 GB of free space. Red Dead Redemption 2 came to consoles in 2018, where it was the best-selling game of 2018 and the second-largest entertainment launch in history.

Red Dead Online, the online chunk of Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2, just might be getting an expansion like Undead Nightmare. Different players are finding examples of NPCs that look like zombies. Reddit user groats_active posted this image, showing what certainly appears to be a zombie:

That user isn't the only one, as there have been other reports of similar findings. It's become a common trend for service-based online games to tease new events or updates with easter eggs some time before the update releases and that could be what is happening here.

Now it's certainly possible that these are just glitches however, the resemblance to a zombie is uncanny. Additionally, Halloween is roughly a month and a half away, so the timing for a spooky expansion or update being teased certainly checks out. The original Red Dead Redemption got a massive expansion featuring zombies called Undead Nightmare, so precedent is certainly present.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has been a massive success for Take-Two and Rockstar so it's obvious the support for Red Dead Online will continue for some time. We'll keep you updated on any further information or official announcements.

Today, Red Dead Redemption 2 got its September Update which adds new content to Red Dead Online. You can become a Collector, Bounty Hunter, and Trader. Unfortunately, these are locked behind the microtransactions. Coming across Gold Bars is incredibly difficult in the game. Each one of these specializations is locked behind 15 Gold Bars. You'll have to buy the $20 bundle which contains 55 Gold Bars to unlock the three.

If you've been playing Red Dead Online since it launched, you probably have enough Gold Bars. But for those who have been waiting for more content, you're out of luck. You'll have to either grind for dozens of hours, or simply get fed up and buy the Gold Bars.

Hopefully, Rockstar Games will remove the requirement in the future because it's a little unfair. If it was 5 Gold Bars it would've been doable, but 15 Gold Bars for each class is too much. What do you think? Let us know.

Red Dead Online is the multiplayer portion of the game that allows you to create your own character. However, once you made one, you couldn't modify him or her. Luckily, on September 10, that changed and now you can reset your character's appearance once for free. If you want to modify it later, you'll have to pay $400 of in-game currency.

Just start Free Roam in Red Dead Online and press the left D-pad quickly, once. This will open the in-game settings menu. Here, you'll find an option to change your character's appearance. The game features a single-player mode and a multiplayer component. While the single-player story focuses on Arthur Morgan, you can create your own cowboy in Red Dead Online. Unfortunately, once you confirmed your selection, you couldn't change the way you looked.

Luckily, that's about to change. Today, developer Rockstar Games announced that the team has "been working on some top-requested features for the next major Red Dead Online update including the ability to reset your character's appearance without altering your progress." Today, the developer announced that "Gun Rush," the long-awaited battle royale mode with 32 players, is available in Red Dead Online Beta. Gun Rush is where you'll put your survival instincts to the test, gathering weapons and ammunition while the play area shrinks. Gun Rush is available to play now in free-for-all and team variations, where the last one standing wins. Also, the PlayStation 4 exclusive content is now available on Xbox One.

More updates like new weapons and clothing, dynamic world events, new story missions, daily challenges, law and bounty upgrades, parley changes, and proximity-based player blips are also coming to Red Dead Online soon. The biggest changes has to be the proximity changes. Player location blips will soon appear only over short distances, reducing the range at which you are visible to others, decreasing the likelihood of being targeted by another player across large areas. Rockstar added that "Down the line, we're also looking to introduce the ability to identify players who grief and kill indiscriminately with a progressively darkening blip that becomes more visible and at a longer range, so everyone in a session can identify potentially dangerous opponents at a glance and from a safe distance."

Updated January 22, 2019: According to the NPD, Red Dead Redemption 2 emerged as the best-selling game in the United States for 2018.

In October, many gamers expected Red Dead Redemption 2 to beat Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 in the sales charts. While the titles were very close, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 managed to take the crown. This was mostly due to the fact that the popular first-person shooter launched several weeks before the Western adventure. Usually, after a Call of Duty game launches, it's the best-selling title for each month in America. However, that wasn't the case in November.

According to a report by The NPD Group, the following games were the best-selling experiences in November. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's position doesn't take into account digital PC sales. The same goes for Battlefield V and a some other games. While adding the digital PC sales isn't expected to top Red Dead Redemption 2, it's still worth mentioning.

The studio said, "The first set of adjustments to the game include changes specifically geared towards creating a more balanced, fun, and rewarding overall experience, across all modes and missions."

• Reducing the prices of most weapons. For players that have already purchased weapons at the previous prices, we will automatically deposit the difference to player balances starting today.

Red Dead Online is set for a staggered rollout over four days in late November. It's no surprise given the issues that plagued the Grand Theft Auto Online launch, with these multiple stages allowing Rockstar to scale servers to demand. While the initial release date for Red Dead Online is November 27, many buyers will need to wait until November 30 to play. Servers will first go live at 8:30 AM ET/5:30 AM PT/1:30PM UK time.

How to play Red Dead Online

Red Dead Online is a free extension of Red Dead Redemption 2, so you must own an Xbox One or PlayStation 4 copy to play. A 5GB automatic update is now available both platforms, downloading the required assets for the multiplayer mode. Once downloaded, access Red Online via the following steps:

1. Start Red Dead Redemption 2 on Xbox One or PlayStation 4.
2. Press A on Xbox One, or X on PlayStation 4, to select your account.
3. Press RB on Xbox One, or R1 on PlayStation 4, to access the Online menu.

However, not all Red Dead Redemption 2 players can start up simultaneously. Depending on which edition of the game you purchased, and when you played, launch dates will vary over the coming days.

• November 27: Red Dead Online available to Ultimate Edition owners.
• November 28: Red Dead Online expands to those who played on October 26.
• November 29: Red Dead Online expands to those who played prior to October 29.
• November 30: Red Dead Online available to all.

Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on Xbox One a few weeks ago, and since then the game has garnered tremendous reviews from critics and gamers alike. In our review, we said, "Red Dead Redemption 2 represents a generational leap for the gaming industry. It not only gives players meaningful quests that surpass even those found in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but it also touches on social issues that plague America even to this day."

Today, Red Dead Online, the game's multiplayer mode, launched in beta form on Xbox One. While the experience is quite polished aside from some selecting issues, multiplayer games always need to be tested. • The world of Red Dead Online will be a continually expanding experience. There will be some additions and updates throughout the beta period too. • You'll accumulate experience through your explorations and encounters that counts towards your rank and provides added bonuses. This is how you unlock new items and improve your attributes.
• Red Dead Online begins with creating your character. You set out on your journey from Sisika Penitentiary where you'll acquire a horse, set up a Camp, hunt down a treasure, equip your first "Ability Card," and meet some fateful characters with a larger story to tell.
• Just like the campaign, Red Dead Online features an "Honor" system. Your Honor will shift high and low based on your decisions and behavior. Additionally, many missions like "A Land of Opportunities" varies depending on your honor.

• Head over to the "Stranger" icons throughout the map to embark on Free Roam missions. You'll see some familiar faces along the way, and these missions can vary based on how noble or nefarious you are.
• The beta includes five modes at launch that are part of a larger series of "Showdowns." You can also enter your trusted steed into races.
• "Shootout" features classic gunfight modes with unlimited lives. Players compete to rack up the most kills before the timer runs out.
• "Make it Count" is a battle royale mode where you have nothing but a bow and a handful of arrows or throwing knives. As expected, the goal is to be the last one standing. There's also a gradually-shrinking player area.
• "Most Wanted" is basically a mode where you win by having the most kills. However, the more kills you get, the more points others get for killing you.
• "Hostile Territory" is basically "Control" from Destiny 2. You have to work in teams to control a plot of land.
• Lastly, "Name your Weapon" requires you to use obscure weapons to get the most point per kill.

While a staggered rollout is underway throughout the week, buyers of the $100 Ultimate Edition are among the first to gain access today, with early adopters set to play the days ahead.

Despite Red Dead Online's formal update hitting both Xbox One and PlayStation 4, some Xbox One users are reporting connectivity issues on Microsoft's home console. Upon starting the game and visiting the Red Dead Online menu, a "Coming Soon" message is displayed. On PlayStation 4, many are already getting hands-on, after servers went live at 8:30AM ET. However, keep in mind Red Dead Online is currently in beta, meaning launch issues are to be expected.

Red Dead Online should share similar core philosophies with GTA Online, dropping dozens of players into its open-world sandbox. Rockstar promises a blend of cooperative and competitive activities, alongside the option to freely roam its world. While you can draw parallels to early Red Dead Redemption online features, improvements seen in GTA Online will likely return. Red Dead Online will also support up to 32 players per server, as confirmed by the game's PlayStation 4 bundle, with eight players per player-created posse.

Speaking with IGN, Josh Needleman, senior producer at Rockstar San Diego, also outlined plans to "introduce narrative elements" for multiplayer. Taking forward the "best elements and best content packs" of GTA Online, these served as a "template" for merging gameplay with the narrative, he said.

Red Dead Redemption 2's $100 Ultimate Edition has provided further online details, promising exclusive bonuses to enthusiasts. Online outfits, weapons, and a horse are among the benefits, indicating customization will play a key role again. A free Survivor camp theme is promised, which could be Red Dead Online's version of player-owned apartments.

Like GTA Online's purchasable Shark Cards, Read Dead Online is expected to pack microtransactions. Common among games-as-a-service titles, this allows developers to monetize games and deliver free post-launch content. And it redefined Rockstar's approach to GTA V, eventually axing plans for single-player DLC.

In late 2017, Take-Two Interactive CEO, Strauss Zelnick, affirmed to investors that it will push "recurrent consumer spending" in future games. While Zelnick has since claimed it's not a "primary concern," we still expect a clear presence in Red Dead Online.

Red Dead Online leaks and rumors

One of Red Dead Redemption 2's biggest leaks surfaced via Trusted Reviews, which published alleged development notes in February 2018. The leak focused on the game's unannounced online features, detailing game modes and features.

According to the document, Red Dead Online will feature "Revive and Survive," a high-stakes, no respawns battle, and a "Money Grab" objective mode. Red Dead Online is also expected to follow the battle royale trend with a mode comparable to Fortnite or PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG). The leak also detailed numerous side activities, as listed below:

• Challenges with small rewards.
• Weapon challenges.
• Deathmatches.
• Treasure hunts.
• Gold-mining.
• Fishing.
• Player-owned tents.

Wrapping up this leak, a companion app for iOS and Android is rumored, similar to Grand Theft Auto V's "iFruit." While primarily hooking into social features, a poker minigame will reportedly feature too.

We also expect Red Dead Redemption 2 to revive the Content Creator mode, with references found in the game's official font pack.

Red Dead Online DLC and updates

While Red Dead Redemption 2's focus initially lays with single-player, Red Dead Online will support the package for coming years. Rockstar plans to deliver regular free content to maintain an active player base, as seen with GTA Online.

Imran Sarwar, director of design at Rockstar North, told IGN the original Red Dead Redemption "fractured the audience" with every update. The team is now "obsessed by keeping the audience complete and experience beyond perpetual," which started in GTA Online. In short, don't expect standalone paid DLC, especially for multiplayer.

Through a Sony marketing deal, PlayStation 4 players will also gain early access to "select online content" before Xbox One players. This will remain a "timed exclusive for 30 days," although the content's scale is unknown.

Red Dead Online is the game's multiplayer component which is basically a sandbox environment with lots of activities. You can live the cowboy life. During a recent earnings call, parent organization Take-Two Interactive said that the mode wouldn't launch until late November. Red Dead Online will start as a beta. While this is definitely a disappointment, Red Dead Redemption 2's single-player campaign is so good that it'll take you hundreds of hours to discover all of its secrets.

A few days ago, developer Rockstar Games said that Red Dead Redemption 2 has achieved the single-biggest opening weekend in the history of entertainment. The company added, "With over $725 million in worldwide retail sell-through during its first three days, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the second-highest grossing entertainment launch of all time."

Red Dead Redemption 2, set in the closing years of the Wild West. While the myths surrounding this time period have become exaggerated and romanticised via Hollywood and other mediums, it wasn't so long ago that all historical records of life in those times has been erased. Red Dead Redemption 2's story takes place through a lens of realism-meets-romanticism, with a side order of good gameplay over historical accuracy.

That said, there's a growing chorus across commentators that Red Dead Redemption 2's gameplay errs too close on the side of realism, to the point where you can even complete chores in your gang's campsite to make people view you more favourably. I've read lamentations that the gunplay is too slow or "clunky," and even that Red Dead Redemption 2 is too big, even.

Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but big entertainment releases (the world's biggest, ever, reportedly) often come with a chorus of contrarianism that seem forced and overthought. In any case, I want to express my sincere gratitude to Rockstar for taking the time to build a game world that delivers something increasingly rare in games today, that of immersion.

Immersive games are OK

One of the biggest issues facing open world games today, for me, is diffusion. Like the heat death of the universe, open world games seem to be getting bigger and bigger, expanding exponentially, while actual good gameplay content, you know, the meat in the sandwich, simply gets spread thin. Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the only games this generation that deliver an open world that feels truly alive, where side activities don't feel like busy work — they feel like they're part of your character's life. Other games have come close, but things like cartoony character writing hold them back from reaching the top spot. When side activities boil down to checking a tick box in a text-based menu, they feel like busy work, whereas in the case of Red Dead Redemption 2, they feel necessary and, therefore, rewarding.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, resources are split into two meters. One regenerates over time, as normal, while another depletes more permanently. The "cores" need to be maintained with items, such as food, booze, and even cigarettes, in order for your character to perform properly. If your Dead Eye core is empty, your aiming sway will be increased, and the targeting reticle will remain dispersed for longer.

If your stamina core is low, you won't be able to sprint, and if your health core is low, you won't be able to regenerate.

There was a trend in games, for a time, where managing and maintaining your character fell by the wayside in favour of making everyone feel like super heroes. Take a bullet to the face? Just hide in a corner for five seconds, you'll be fine.

There's certainly a place for these sorts of experiences, don't get me wrong, but it seems the trend has swung back in the other direction in recent years for the sake of interactivity. Even Call of Duty now has active health replenishment, doubtless following the success of games like PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, where tense, mid-fight bandaging only adds to the experience. Red Dead Redemption 2 pushes interaction to the extremes, to the point where something as mundane as ammo crafting feels like it's intrinsic to the narrative experience, adding custom split points to your bullets to inflict added pain.

In other games with crafting systems, you don't actually, feel the crafting. The crafting takes place in some text-based menu, and the things you create are simply entries in a database. In Red Dead Redemption 2, they come with 3D models, animations, and intersect with other side activities like hunting and fishing, which are also represented by 3D objects with complex systems and behaviors behind them. Every aspect of the game has a purpose, and is complemented by their interactions with other systems within the game.

When you're studying animals with your binoculars, sometimes you might see deers interlocking antlers in a fight. Other times, you might see a pack of coyotes on the hunt. Examining them reveals information on how best to hunt them, to keep their hides in tact for the best selling price or for crafting purposes. Additionally, though, the game's main character, Arthur, might sketch them into his journal, which is an on-going hand-written record of the decisions and story you build up for yourself as you play. He'll also hand-sketch locations of animals onto your map, and cross off the noteworthy hunts once they've been completed.

For detractors, these features are exactly that, just features. Perhaps extraneous and unnecessary, getting in the way of "real gameplay," therein being shooting and being Clint Eastwood. Red Dead Redemption 2 just isn't that kind of game. These features interact deliberately, because they want to immerse you, they want you to lose yourself in this meticulously constructed world Rockstar has put together. They want you to think about how clean your weapons are, they want you to take care of your character's health, because they want you to care about the character. Ultimately, the story is more powerful as a result.

It's OK to not like this type of game, it's not OK to claim that it's bad design, because the truth is, you're just not into immersive games.

Rare Dead Redemption 2

There has been a wealth of controversy over how hard Rockstar has been pushing its staff, with reports of mandatory overtime, unsympathetic bosses, and other aggressive practices. "Crunch culture," as its known, appears to be rife in the AAA industry, apparently getting progressively worse for staff in-line with the quality of games. Clearly, there's a huge demand for games as detailed as Red Dead Redemption 2, but the human cost, the sheer amount of financial risk involved, may be too great for many publishers to stomach. And that's while ignoring whether or not they should even try, from a moral standpoint.

Ultimately, the dynamism found in Red Dead Redemption 2 is the culmination of an insane amount of work and skill that is clearly in huge demand, given the sales success of the game so far. But is it feasible to expect the industry to move in that direction now? I'd say it's unlikely. It's also probable that Red Dead Redemption 2 is in such high demand simply because of how rare it is to get a game on this level.

When my first horse was killed in Red Dead Redemption 2, I felt more moved by that than I have been for the elaborate plots of many recent "AAA" games. I fed that horse and groomed that horse, named that horse (Andromeda... ahem). The interactive features, that some dismiss, helped me bond with this virtual nag in a way that simply doesn't happen that often in games.

Immersion on this level rarely happens, and when it does, it's something that should be celebrated, because open world games crammed with instantaneous superhero gratification are a dime a dozen.

Today, developer Rockstar Games announced that Red Dead Redemption 2 has achieved the single-biggest opening weekend in the history of entertainment. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on Xbox One a few days ago, and since then the game has garnered tremendous reviews from critics and gamers alike. However, those individuals who own expensive gaming rigs have been asking Rockstar Games to bring the title to PC. While the company has publicly stated numerous times that it has no plans to bring it to the platform, there are hints that it's going to come sooner rather than later.

At launch, the developer released a companion application for Red Dead Redemption 2. You can view the map, look at the journal, view the encyclopedia, and do much more from a smartphone or tablet. According to Rockstar Intel, the code for the program points to the PC version of the game. Aside from hinting at features like Oculus virtual reality support, PC settings like particle effects and anisotropic filtering were also uncovered. You can look at some of them below.

It's unclear if these are the remnants of PC development or hints towards a PC port. Grand Theft Auto V eventually made its way to PC so it's likely that Red Dead Redemption 2 will follow suit. However, the first Red Dead Redemption never came to PC so you never know. Just like any such leak, treat it with a grain of salt until we receive confirmation. Rockstar Games isn't commenting on this so we'll keep you posted as soon as we know more. That might not be until 2019, after Red Dead Online has launched on consoles.

A few days ago, outlets began reporting that the PlayStation 4 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 came on two discs. Images of a two-disc PlayStation 4 pack were all over social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Due to the marketing agreement for Red Dead Online between Sony and Rockstar Games, many supposed insiders claimed that the Xbox One version would only ship on one disc and require a massive download.

Luckily, the game is already available in select regions and we can confirm that the Xbox One version also comes in two discs. An image provided to us by an anonymous source confirms this.

Red Dead Redemption 2's review embargo has finally lifted, with near-universal praise from critics. Our Xbox One review commended its unrivaled scale and depth, positioning it among the console's best games ever. Digital Foundry has now conducted a detailed analysis of the final product, surfacing some impressive (and not-so-impressive) technical details on Microsoft's hardware.

According to Digital Foundry, Red Dead Redemption 2 achieves native 4K resolution on Xbox One X, while simultaneously maintaining a near-constant 30 frames-per-second (30 FPS). Conversely, the game falls to 864p on Xbox One S, with regular framerate drops, especially in dense environments. Paired with a reliance on temporal anti-aliasing, this results in a blurry result on the entry-level device.

Delivering one of Xbox One's best open worlds to date, Xbox One appears to be the top console to play Red Dead Redemption 2. Meanwhile, Microsoft's aging Xbox One S is still failing to regularly hit its maximum 1080p gaming resolution across today's top releases.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a cinematic action-adventure game set in the Wild West. The title takes place in 1899, a time which brought stability to the United States, but also resulted in a drastic shift for many individuals who lived close to the untamed frontier. Beforehand, the federal government chose not to heavily intervene in these territories, going all the way to California. However, the need for consolidation and some form of control — especially when states like Montana and Utah were admitted into the Union — triggered an end to the uncontrolled lawlessness that prevailed during those times. What many people considered "true freedom" was coming to an end.

These are the times depicted in Red Dead Redemption 2, which, by the way, is frankly sensational.

Life on the run

Government agents were dispatched to round up existing gangs and even hunt down notorious criminals. Private companies recruited sizable militias which prevented trains and stagecoaches from being robbed. Instead of thriving, life on the road became all about survival on a day-to-day basis. Gangs had to hide and rely on numerous smaller jobs which hopefully flew under the radar of local law enforcement. You couldn't amass millions. Gangs were always living on the edge.

Instead of glorifying the Wild West, Red Dead Redemption 2 presents the struggle of one of the last gangs in the United States. The game weaves a believable tale which focuses on the heists and behind-the-scenes challenges of life in the wild west, on the fringes of the law. The main cast of almost two dozen characters presents their own unique takes on the hardships they face. For example, the needs of John Marston's wife and son may be vastly different than those of the loan shark Leopold Strauss. However, fate has brought everyone together. Rockstar ties the Red Dead Redemption 2's narrative together with a confidence rarely seen in the medium.

Focus on survival

Arthur Morgan, the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2, is one such outlaw who questions his actions. He is a product of the times and is governed by basic principles like family and loyalty. Morgan may be rough around the edges but is committed to the gang members who raised him. Despite the fact that he seems weary of life on the run, he stands by Dutch van der Linde, the leader of the gang, returning alongside John Marston from the original Red Dead Redemption.

Uprooting themselves again and again, and barely scraping by, begins to test their patience. How Morgan handles these trying times forms the crux of the story. Red Dead Redemption 2 focuses on themes like liberty, and unchecked power.

Unlike the original Red Dead Redemption, this game places an emphasis on day-to-day survival. In order to perform at his best, Morgan must sleep, eat, change attire, maintain weapons, and work with various other supporting systems, such as fishing and cooking. Aside from personal upkeep, our protagonist has to provide for other members of the gang. For example, every outlaw is required to contribute to a community pool which can be used to buy supplies like food or medicine, and upgrade facilities like the kitchen. The more you contribute, the more goodwill you earn.

Honor system

Just like the Mass Effect series, Red Dead Redemption 2 features a "Renegade" or "Paragon"-like system. Here's it's called "Honor." Helping out individuals in distress will move your bar towards the right, murdering and pillaging will push it towards the other direction. This seems to impact the way other characters view you in the game. Being a nuisance will result in locals calling the sheriff even if you're minding your own business. According to Rockstar Games, Honor also affects music in certain situations, how the story unfolds, Morgan's dreams, and his journal entries. Morality systems in Red Dead Redemption 2 are far more pervasive than in other, similar titles.

The original Red Dead Redemption also featured an Honor system, but it was rather basic. Helping individuals in distress was looked upon favorably, but robbing or aiding thieves would drag you down, often putting you at odds with the story the game wanted to portray. Morgan is a full-fledged outlaw, so you don't have to worry about playing the game without ever committing a crime. Mayhem and murder are part of the experience. How you help people — whichever side of the law they may be on — is what matters in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Visuals and performance

Visually, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an absolute marvel. The title features photorealistic visuals running at native 4K resolution on the Xbox One X. The frame rate is locked at thirty frames per second, and almost always hits that target. However, it intermittently dips whenever you enter some buildings, presumably as it loads in NPCs and other interactive objects.

The use of high-resolution textures makes objects and characters look phenomenal, which is particularly important due to the inclusion of up-close-and-personal first-person mode. Unlike some of the pre-release footage, Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn't suffer from any "jaggy" edges on Xbox One X. However, the game does seem to lower the resolution of certain effects like object shadows from time to time. This may be a result of selective dynamic scaling to preserve performance.

Overall, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an extremely polished experience. Aside from the occasional stutter, the only other issue detected on Xbox One X was a pair of canned goods floating in the air during a cutscene. It's evident that Rockstar Games spent countless time fixing bugs because even after dozens of hours, they're hard to find. Additionally, if you ever get your wagon stuck behind a rock, you don't have to reload the game. Just hold down the right bumper and your wagon will reverse.

The vast majority of the game almost resembles the sort of pre-rendered imagery you might sooner expect from a Hollywood digital effects team. For an open world title, that's quite a feat, because generally, only narrow, linear adventure games tend to achieve this level of photorealism. Red Dead Redemption 2 not only pushes the boundaries in terms of graphics but also interactivity in open world games.

Side activities

Red Dead Redemption 2's world feels alive. Instead of simply clipping through the brushwood, Morgan shows discomfort as he uses his arms to push back wayward shrubbery. Additionally, when you're exploring the world, you can interact with every character — greet them or rob them — and be on your way. Lastly, animals react realistically when they hear you, fleeing as you approach on horseback. The variety of animations and realism in each creature's expression makes it feel less procedural and scripted, and far more dynamic and immersive. Every creature, every bit of wind-brushed foliage behaves with purpose, which is rare for open world games.

Red Dead Redemption 2 features a plethora of side activities like dominoes, poker, hunting, fishing, bounty hunting, treasure hunting, debt collection, paleontology, bank robberies, and much more. The plot is interwoven with these activities.

Additionally, you will also be working on improving your own gang's facilities. Investing in the base camp is quite possibly the most important gameplay mechanic. Not only does it unlock features like fast travel, but it also lifts the morale of the entire gang. You can "upgrade" attributes like food, medicine, and ammunition quality. These upgrades aren't too expensive, and instead of paying off bounties towards the beginning, you should save up and unlock them all.

The game wants to give you an understanding of what life was like in the Wild West and then escalates the desperation of the gang from there. As the law closes in, everyone wants to escape to a place where no one can find them. However, this leads to a dramatic confrontation which changes everyone's lives forever.

Many memorable quests involve discovering secrets off the beaten path. For example, close to the town of Valentine, you can find a dismembered corpse hanging from a bridge, with strong hints that this was the work of a serial-killer psychopath rather than your typical gang runner. You'll be able to work through uncovering other crime scenes, investigating the surrounding areas, if you opt to track down the killer. The depth of these sorts of side objectives, which many players might not even find, is a testament to Rockstar's attention to detail.

Technical advancements

Aside from the visuals, the most significant leap Red Dead Redemption 2 offers is the animation quality. The game features a significantly slower pace than the original Red Dead Redemption, as shooting and exploring are more methodical. According to the developer, there are over 300,000 individual animations in the experience. The title is meant to be savored. Rushing through will cause you to miss copious secrets and surprisingly deep side objectives scattered throughout the American Heartland. As a result of this, traversing the world can be a wonderfully relaxing experience. However, be prepared for random world events — like rival gangs or bounty hunters coming after you — always be on your toes.

Methodical gunplay

Just like the relatively slow-paced gameplay, shooting requires precision in place of a volley of bullets. Instead of simply striking a foe's torso multiple times, you should try to land headshots. Auto-aim returns making it easy for players to align shots, but you'll benefit more greatly from precision. The auto-aim comes in handy when there are numerous enemies about, or if a shootout is taking place in a dimly-lit environment, however, finding cover and taking time to deliver a critical hit is essential in Red Dead Redemption 2. The "Dead Eye" system from the original game has been upgraded to assist here. After you've mastered the ability, you can see weak points on animals and humans. Red Dead Redemption 2 represents a generational leap for the gaming industry. It not only gives players meaningful quests that surpass even those found in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but it also touches on social issues that plague America even to this day.

It almost feels beyond the standard definition of a "game," bordering on raw simulation. It's about life, and the array of events that just happen to occur within it, and the consequences therein.

Despite some minor issues like stuttering in interiors, awkward camera angles in smaller houses, or the relatively slow start to the open world story campaign — Red Dead Redemption 2 simply overrides its small perceptible flaws with what is nothing short of a truly spectacular experience. Simply put, it is one of the best games ever made, setting a new standard for open world titles going forward.

Rockstar Games' upcoming western, Red Dead Redemption 2, is just around the corner for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. While a few days out, there's still a lot to learn about the highly-anticipated title upon its slated October 26 debut. Parallel to the full game launch, an official companion app has now been announced for iOS and Android devices.

The Red Dead Redemption 2 companion app promises to relay "real-time interactive information" when playing the console game. The app is capable of displaying the world map, with options to zoom, set waypoints of mark areas of interest. You'll also hook into the protagonist's in-game journal, serve up Rockstar Social Club statistics, and access a full game guide provided by Piggyback.

Using the app can also enhance your on-screen experience, with an option to shift heads-up-display (HUD) elements to your smartphone. This mode doubles-down on immersion, without comprising on gameplay indicators.
