The Resident Evil series is often considered to be the pinnacle of survival horror games, and for good reason.

Since the release of the first title nearly 30 years ago in 1996, Resident Evil has grown to become one of the biggest horror franchises in gaming, with it even expanding into film, television, novels, comics, and other media as a direct result of its popularity. Though it fell off somewhat in the mid-2010s, developer and publisher Capcom propelled the series back into the limelight with 2017's Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, which it's since followed up with 2021's Resident Evil Village sequel and several exhaustive remakes of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4.

Several of these — including 7, Village, and the remakes of 2 and 3 — are available to add to this excellent build-your-own-bundle deal from Fanatical, as are other entries like the Resident Evil Revelations titles, Resident Evil and Resident Evil 0, a pairing of the original Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, and 2012's Resident Evil 6. The only real downside to the bundle is that 2023's Resident Evil 4 remake isn't included as one of the game options you can pick, though the original 2005 release is. Still, I think you'd be better off going for some of the newer entries like the Resident Evil 2 remake or Resident Evil Village, as these are more expensive and are far less likely to go on sale comparatively.

It's also important to note that Fanatical sells the Steam versions of all these games in its bundle, so only PC players can actually take advantage of it. With that said, many of the titles are on sale on Microsoft's Xbox storefront for steep discounts right now, and you can even play the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 through its all-you-can-eat Xbox Game Pass service. With Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you can access them on both Xbox and PC, potentially making that tier worth investing in if you use both platforms.

Analysis: A solid way to start the year

There's some big games in these additions, making this a strong start to 2024. I already own both Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Resident Evil 2, but if you don't, those are absolutely both worth checking out now that they're coming to Xbox Game Pass. Resident Evil 2 is one of the best survival-horror games ever crafted, while Assassin's Creed Valhalla provides dozens of hours of adventure, so you won't be running out of things to do anytime remotely soon. 

As an aside, what's everyone looking forward to the most this year? Personally, it has to be Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, but I'm also extremely excited for Shattered Space, the first expansion for Bethesda Game Studios' science-fiction RPG, Starfield. 

What you need to know

• During the June 2022 Capcom Showcase, Capcom revealed that the previously-announced current-generation updates for Resident 2, 3, and 7 were coming today.
• These updates bring native Xbox Series X|S and PS5 enhancements for three big Resident Evil games from across the last few years.
• The updates are free, so anyone who has already bought these games is getting the enhancements at no extra cost.

During the Capcom Showcase on June 13, 2022, Capcom revealed some exciting news for Resident Evil fans. The previously-announced current-generation enhancements for Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard are now available. 

This means that Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 can take advantage of the newer consoles' ultra-fast internal SSDs and advanced processing power, adding in "high framerate" alongside 3D audio and ray-tracing.

The last mainline game in the franchise, Resident Evil Village, was released in 2021 and utilized 3D audio alongside ray-tracing. Because all of these games run on the RE Engine, it seems like Capcom has been able to take its advancements from Village and backport them to the older games.

These enhancements are free for any existing owners, so you don't to buy any kind of upgrades, regardless of what platform you're on. Capcom stated earlier in the year that these three games would be getting support for current-generation consoles sometime in 2022.

Capcom is also currently working on the Resident Evil 4 remake, a re-imagining of the classic game that will only be available on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC, and PS5.

• Capcom is updating Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard for Xbox Series X|S and PS5.
• Exact details for the improvements have not been confirmed.
• These upgrades are free and are slated to arrive sometime later in 2022.

Capcom is bringing a slate of its games from the last console generation to new gaming hardware. Resident Evil 2, 3 and 7 are all coming to Xbox Series X|S and PS5 later in 2022.

Capcom shared on Twitter that all three games would be getting upgrades later in the year. These upgrades are free for anyone who currently owns the games, and PC owners will also be getting an upgrade adding in the new features. Exactly what's being upgraded in these new versions of the games on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PS5 isn't clear however, as Capcom hasn't shared any particular details.

Resident Evil Village, the most recent game in the franchise, featured ray-tracing and 3D audio, so it would make sense to see these kinds of upgrades come over.

Capcom launched Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil Village in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021 respectively, maintaining a steady slate which has seen several games join the ranks of the best Xbox horror games available. Most recently, Resident Evil Village has crossed 5.7 million copies sold so far.

Looking ahead, Capcom is reportedly working on a remake of Resident Evil 4, with the remake reportedly taking a darker tone and changing some things up compared to the original game.

• Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is getting lots of new content over the next several weeks.
• One of the most surprising additions is a crossover with Resident Evil 2, bringing several new skins including a Mr. X skin for the Handler.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne will be getting lots of different content over the next several weeks, including the Rajang beast update, which includes a new region in the Burning Lands and the ability to invite your friends over to your house. This update is set to arrive on October 10.

That's not the only stuff coming though, as Capcom has just revealed some Resident Evil 2 skins for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, including Leon, Claire and even a Mr. X costume for the Handler. Capcom also shared a new video showing the winner of the Iceborne weapon design contest. The winner is the Black Eagle Charge Blade. It's coming in November.

The title features tense exploration and puzzle-solving gameplay that are staples in the series even to this day. Players join rookie police officer Leon Kennedy and college student Claire Redfield, who are thrust together by a disastrous outbreak in Raccoon City. The illness transforms the population into deadly zombies who just want to kill. Your job is to escape.

Today, Xbox Live's Director of Programming Larry Hryb announced that the Resident Evil 2 remake was on sale only during the weekend on the Microsoft Store. This means that only the Xbox One copy receives the discount of up to 33 percent off. The Standard Edition is going for roughly $40, and the Deluxe Edition costs roughly $52. Keep in mind that the Standard Edition has received the 33 percent discount, while the Deluxe Edition has only gone down by 25 percent. Since there aren't any expansions or critical content, you should probably pick up the Standard Edition this time around.

In our review, Jez Corden said, "Resident Evil 2 retains some of that... writing cheese, but the attempts Capcom made to inject more emotion into proceedings while fleshing out other aspects of the story undoubtedly pushed the game beyond the original. It all leaves me hungry to see what other classics like Resident Evil 3: Nemesis... Resident Evil 4 might look like reimagined by this team."

If you're in the market for a truly spectacular survival horror game, then look no further. However, you have to pull the trigger soon because this digital edition will go back up to $60 in 3 days. This is the first time Resident Evil 2 has received such a substantial discount. Hopefully this will happen in the future, too.

Each soundtrack has been remastered for this release so it sounds exceptional. If you're an audiophile, you'll be pleased to know that each vinyl has been pressed onto heavyweight records. This should guarantee longevity and superior sound quality.

Even to this day, there's something about owning and playing a vinyl that makes it a magical experience. If you want to purchase a record player, they're going for roughly $50 on Amazon at the moment. The Resident Evil soundtracks should be available for preorder soon, too.

So you've made it to the S.T.A.R.S Office and got to see that beautiful MQ 11 on the rack in the weapon's room. That gun is made for spraying bullets, killing enemies faster, and giving you an out when you find yourself stuck in a life-threatening situation. This gun is only available for Claire's story.

Note: This guide may contain location-based spoilers.

How to find Claire's MQ 11 machine gun in Resident Evil 2

Note: If you have not reached the parking garage of the Police Station and witnessed the cutscene at the door then you are not ready to get the machine gun.

1. Trigger the cutscene by interacting with the Parking Garage Ticket Machine.
2. Start by looking at the Parking Garage Door. Go right, down the steps, and through the door. (This door will not be unlocked until after the cutscene.)
3. Grab the Map off of the wall to your right.
4. Go back to the Parking Garage, go up the steps, make a left, and head out of the door towards the next hallway.

5. Make a right and head towards the Kennell. (There are Lickers in this hallway AND in the Kennel, make sure you have what you need or run really fast.)
6. Go through the kennel and out the door on the other side. Once you get into the Hallway make a left and enter the door directly ahead of you. This is the Morgue.

7. Go to the left-hand side of the Morgue and open the chute that is 2 slots away from the wall. Open it up and remove the Diamond Key from the body. (All of the zombies in the room, including the ones inclosed, will now wake up.)

8. Go back to the Elevator Control Room and use the Diamond Key to unlock the door on the left. Go inside, collect your loot, and pull the lever on the desk.
9. Head out of the control room, make a left and take the elevator up. When you reach your destination follow the hallway and you'll end up in the Chief's Office.
10. Go out the door to the right of the Heart Door. Make a right, follow the hallway, make a left, and go into the door directly ahead. This is the Private Collection Room.

11. Walk all the way around the room by following the loop to the right. You'll see a desk with a picture on it, grab that picture.

12. Examine the picture from your inventory and remove the Heart Key from the back of it.

13. Head back to the Chief's Office use the Heart Key to unlock the Heart Door. There are steps directly in front of you. Take them down.
14. Make a right and follow the hallway. The first door on the right is the Interrogation Room, go inside.

15. Collect all the things inside of this room that you want BEFORE you grab the box. As soon as you grab the box a Licker will jump through the window.

16. Go into your inventory and combine the jewel from the septer with the box and recieve the S.T.A.R.S. Badge. (Don't have the septer? There are instructions below!)

17. Examine the badge from your inventory and press the button on the back to turn it into a USB Dongle Key.

18. Leave the interrogation room, go down the hallway, and get back to the stairs. Take them up two flights and get to the Third Floor. Take the first door on your left to the Balcony.
19. Once outside go left, head down the steps, go slightly right and all the way to the building directly ahead of you to find the lever on your left. Pull that lever.

20. Go back up the steps that you came from and head back to the ladder you took from the balcony. There is a lever just to the left of that ladder. Pull that lever.
21. Go into the door to the left of the Helicopter Crash. As soon as you loop around the Hallway the Tyrant will start chasing you. Lure him down to the first lever you pulled so you have more room to run around him. Do not waste bullets trying to attack him. Even if you "kill" him he will respawn. He's chasing you for the rest of your stay here at the Police Station so as you complete the next few steps make sure you're crafty about the paths you take and don't stop running.

22. Follow the path in this map I've drawn. It's all areas you've been to so they should be unlocked. EVEN IF you've already solved the Library puzzle this is the safest route. Yeah, we're taking a long way.

23. Continue onto the path I've drawn here to get through the Second Level. Once you make it to the stairs take them up to the second level. Follow this path to get to the S.T.A.R.S. Office.

24. Go left and insert your USB Dongle Key into the computer. Then interact with the screen to unlock the door.

25. Grab that beautiful gun.

There you have it! Go into the weapons cache and get your prize! Just a little note here: If you run fast and hard enough the Tyrant will not follow you to the S.T.A.R.S. office. If he does you can stun him with a significant amount of damage that will leave him "dead" for a little while, but he will always get back up. Try not to waste too many bullets.

How to get the Machine Gun upgrades in Resident Evil 2

1. To grab the Suppressor (MQ11) for the machine gun, unlock the Goddess Statue, take the elevator down, and go all the way to the basement level of the steps.
2. There's a display case that you unlock with your S.T.A.R.S. Badge. If it's still a USB Dongle Key all you have to do is re-examine the item and press the button on the back to turn it back into a badge.

3. Insert that as a key to the display case to pick up the upgrade.

How to get the scepter in Resident Evil 2

To get the bejeweled box open you'll need the gem from the scepter. Without it, you can't get the S.T.A.R.S. Badge. No badge, no gun. I don't make the rules.

1. Go up both sets of steps in the Main Hall and take the door on the left-hand side to get to the Library.

2. As soon as you enter head for the first table on your right. You don't have to kill any zombies or freak out. Just grab the Red Book off of the table and go back into the Main Hall.
3. Follow the path on the map I've provided to get to the Art Room. Once there make a right and grab the Statue Hand on the crate next to the statue.

4. Combine the Hand and the book from inside of your inventory.
5. Attach the newly combined item to the statue.
6. Grab the Scepter out of the statue's hand.
7. Examine the Scepter in your inventory to turn it into a red gemstone.

8. Now you can use that gemstone with the bejeweled box to unlock the badge!

How to find the GM 79 in Resident Evil 2

Note: This gun can be found in the Police Station.

1. First, you need the Spade Key. Head out up the first set of steps in the Main Hall and make a left into the West Office. Go out the door on the other side of the office and follow the hallway on the right all the way down.

2. Go up those steps until you get to the third floor. Follow the wrap-around to your right and find the desk. The key is on top of this desk.

3. Go back to the Main Hall, head up the top of the steps, and make a right. Go in the first door on your left to enter the Waiting Room. Use the Spade key to unlock the door in the back of the room and go out the door.

4. Make a left as soon as you enter the Hallway.
5. Go into the first door on your right side to get into the Art Room.

6. There is a table directly ahead with a green lamp on it as soon as you enter. Grab the Weapons Card off of it.

7. Go back to the Main Hall and into the West Office. Once you exit the door on the other side of the office go through the door directly accross the hall labeled Safety Deposit Room.

8. Go to the back of the room an insert the Weapons Card into the slot next to the display case.

There you have it! Enjoy shooting off those Flame Rounds and Acid Rounds at all your least favorite enemies!

How to get the GM 79 upgrades in Resident Evil 2

Note: You need to have reached the Parking Garage in order to find this part.

• The only upgrade is the Shoulder Stock (GM 79). Head out the door behind the SWAT car, through the Kennels, and to the Morgue. Open the second container from the wall (closest to the door) and retrieve the Diamond Key from inside. Then head back to the Parking Garage, go into the second room , and use the Diamond Key to open the locked door inside. This is the Elevator Control room where you'll find the Shoulder Stock inside of the locker to the left.

How to unlock the 3F Locker in Resident Evil 2

This locker is located on the Third Floor of the Police Station. The password is DCM

How to find it: Head west out of the Main Hall and go through the West Office. Make a right and wrap around that Hallway as if you're trying to get to the Dark Room. Go up the steps at the end of the hall until you're on the Third Level. Make a right and head down the hallway. On your right-hand side you'll see a hole in the wall and directly to the left of it is the locker.

How to unlock the Shower Room Locker in Resident Evil 2

This locker is located on the Second Floor of the Police Station. The password is CAP.

How to find it: Head west out of the Main Hall and go through the West Office. Make a right and wrap around that Hallway as if you're trying to get to the Dark Room. Go up the steps at the end of the hall until you're on the Second Level. Make a right and enter the bathroom located on the right-hand side. The locker is against the back walls.

How to unlock the Control Room Locker in Resident Evil 2

This locker is located on the Upper Floor of the Sewers inside of the Control Room. The password is SZF.

How to find it: Once you enter the Sewers your first location will be the platforms that give you the first look at the Cable Car. Follow the platforms up until you reach a ladder. Take the ladder up and enter the Control Room. The locker is located on the right-hand side of the control room right next to the platform you need to jump down in order to get to the Monitor Room.

How to unlock the Waiting Room Combination Safe in Resident Evil 2

This safe is located in the Waiting Room of the Second Floor of the Police Station. The password is Left 6, right 2, left 11.

How to find it: Head up the first and second set of steps on the right-hand side of the Main Hall. Make a right, follow the hallway, and enter the first door on the left (The Waiting Room). The safe is on the floor just behind the desk.

How to unlock the West Combination Safe in Resident Evil 2

This safe is located in the West Office on the First Floor of the Police Station. The password is Left 9, right 15, left 7.

How to find it: Head up the first set of steps in the Main Hall and go through the door on the left to enter the West Office. Make your way to the back left corner room. This combination safe is in that corner office and behind the desk.

How to unlock the Middle Floor Sewers Safe in Resident Evil 2

This safe is located in the hallway leading out of the Monitor Room. The password is Left 2, right 12, left 8.

How to find it: Exit the east side door of the Monitor Room that leads to the Treatment Pool Room and pull the lever directly in front of you. Once the bridge drops go over it and make a right. Wrap around the hallway where you'll see a dead man leaning against the railing. In front of him is a desk with the Sewers Safe on top of it.

How to unlock Leon's Desk in Resident Evil 2

Leon's Desk is located in the West Office on the First Floor of the Police Station. The password is NED on the left side. The right side is MRG.

How to find it: Head up the first set of steps in the Main Hall and go through the door on the left to enter the West Office. Directly in front of you, on the end of all the other desks, is Leon's Desk.

How to unlock the terminal and portable safes in Resident Evil 2

The terminal and the portable safes can be a bit of a pain, but don't worry. We've got the answers for you.

How to unlock the Portable Safes in Resident Evil 2: Resets with each gameplay

How to find it: Both of the portable safes that you'll find are in different spots for each scenario. The code that unlocks them changes for each session. That means the code you used for the first time you played Claire A will not be the same code for your second time playing Claire A. Once they are unlocked they always contain a spare key for the Locker Terminal in the Safety Deposit Room (covered below).

Our advice? Play with the buttons until two are light up at the same time. Take note of what the pattern is on a piece of paper and keep testing until you get it right. They seem like a pain, but don't take more than a minute or so to crack.

How to unlock the Locker Terminal in Resident Evil 2

You'll find the Locker Terminal in the Safety Deposit room on the First Floor of the Police Station. It contains Gun Powder, Combat Knife, Roll of Film, 9mm Ammo, Hip Pouch (+2 inventory slots), and ammo respectively between the lockers.

Note: Use the first spare key for the missing number two slot. You won't have the second yet to get the pouch and flame rounds are useless to you before getting the Grenade Launcher.

The password is on the right side is 102, 103, 106, and 109. Left side is 203 and 208.

How to find it: To find this terminal head up the first set of steps in the Main Hall and go through the door on the left to enter the West Office. Exit the door on the other side of the office. Directly across the hall is a door labeled "Safety Deposit Room". This is where the Locker Terminal is.

The keys to the Police Station in Resident Evil 2 are very cleverly designed like a deck of cards. There is four throughout the scenarios and each one looks like a different suit: The Club Key, The Heart Key, The Spade Key, and the Diamond Key. There are also a few other notable keys for you to find throughout the game. Here's how to find them all!

How to find The Club Key in Resident Evil 2

Note: This key is only available in Leon's Scenarios. You need to have made it to the Balcony to be ready to collect this key.

Are you ready to find this key? Have you've made it to the part where you used the Square Crank to open the door in the hallway on the Second Floor? Great. You're ready to find this key.

Where to find it: Head over to the Balcony by following the hallway to a set of stairs. Take the stairs up to the Third Floor and then go out the door in front of you (slightly to the right). This is the Balcony. Go down the ladder of the Balcony, trigger the cutscene, and then run down the stairs to the left. Go forward, but slightly right to find a small building with a door making a lot of noise. Eventually, two zombies will burst through the door and make it accessible for you to enter. Either kill them or run around, but get yourself into that room. Go toward the right and through a second door. On the back wall there is a whiteboard with the Club key taped to it.

How to find The Heart Key in Resident Evil 2

Note: This key is only available in the Claire Scenarios. You need to have made it to the Chief's Office to be ready to collect this key.

Are you ready to find this key? Have you collected everything you need to in the garage and made it to Chief Iron's Office? Great. You're ready to find this key.

Where to find it: Start at Chief Iron's Office. Head out the door to the right of the Heart Door. Make a right, follow the hallway down, make a left, and enter the door directly in front of you. This is the Private Collection Room. Wrap around the room, by going right, until you find a table with a picture frame on top of it. Grab that picture and examine it from your inventory. There is a button on the back of it that will turn the frame into the Heart Key.

How to find The Spade Key in Resident Evil 2

Are you ready to find this key? If you're playing Leon's story you can find this key as soon as you have access to the Police Station. If you're playing Claire's story you have access to this key as soon as you unlock the Reception Room.

Where to find it: Head into the Reception Room from the Main Hall. Follow the hallway ALL the way down. When you reach the end turn right and go through that door. This is the Observation Room. This is where the instructions split up.

If you're playing Claire you'll need to jump out of the window in the back of the room to the left. Make a right and then make your first left. Follow that path down to the end and make a left. At the end of this hallway you'll find a set of stairs. Take them up two flights until you're on the Third Level. Make a left and follow the hallway down. On your right you'll find a hole in the wall that you need to pass through. In this room there is a desk that has the Spade Key sitting right on it!

If you're playing Leon you can use your Cutting Tool to unlock the door and pass through that room. When you're done collecting loot in that room go through the door leading to the next hallway. Go straight until you meet a wall and then make a left. Follow that hallway until you find a set of stairs. Take the stairs up two flights until you're on the Third Level. Make a left and follow the hallway down. On your right you'll find a hole in the wall that you need to pass through. In this room there is a desk that has the Spade Key sitting right on it!

On the west side of the Police Station's third floor, at the end of the hallway, there's a room with a shadow cast on the wall. Enter the room, and collect the Spade Key sitting right on top of the desk.

How to find The Diamond Key in Resident Evil 2

Note: You need to have made it to the Parking Garage in order to be ready to collect this key.

Where to find it: Start in the parking garage and take the door to the right (behind the SWAT car). Make an immediate right and follow the hallway all the way down. Wrap around the corner to the left and take your first door on the left. This is the Kennel. There are Lickers or Zombie Dogs inside, depending on whose story you're playing. Kill the monsters and wrap around the Kennel to the right and take the door (on the bottom right of the Kennel if you're looking at the map). Make a left when you exit the door and take the next door directly ahead of you. This is the Morgue. Open the second to last coffin on the left-hand side (closest to the door).

If you are playing Claire the right side of the zombie's head (from inside the chute) has the Diamond Key. As soon as you grab it that zombie, and all the others in that room, will spawn.

If you are playing Leon This body will immediately spawn as a zombie. The key will be waiting on the table for you to pick up after you've dealt with that.

How to find Car Key in Resident Evil 2

Note: You need to have made it to the Parking Garage to be ready to get this key.

Where to find it: Start in the parking garage and take the door to the right (behind the SWAT car). Head straight and take the first door on your left. This is the Firing Range. As soon as you enter you'll see a yellow box on the table to your right. Grab it. Examine the box in your inventory to turn it into the Car Key. You can then examine the Car Key to open the boot of a car in the parking garage for a weapon upgrade.

How to find Sewers Key in Resident Evil 2

Note: You need to have made it to the Sewers to be ready to get this key.

Where to find it: You can find the Sewers Key on the desk right by the Cable Car in the Sewer's midsection. You have to pass this section for the story so we promise you won't miss it.

Resident Evil 2 originally launched in 1998 and is considered a cult classic. The title features tense exploration and puzzle-solving gameplay that are staples in the series even to this day. For those unfamiliar with the story, players join rookie police officer Leon Kennedy and college student Claire Redfield, who are thrust together by a disastrous outbreak in Raccoon City. The illness transforms the population into deadly zombies who just want to kill.

Today, Capcom launched Resident Evil 2 on Xbox One and other platforms. The remake costs $59.99, but there's also a Deluxe Edition available for $69.99. This version comes with various skins. The company also released a bombastic launch trailer which captures the horrors Leon and Claire experience.

In our review, Jez Corden said, "Resident Evil 2 retains some of that... writing cheese, but the attempts Capcom made to inject more emotion into proceedings while fleshing out other aspects of the story undoubtedly pushed the game beyond the original. It all leaves me hungry to see what other classics like Resident Evil 3: Nemesis... Resident Evil 4 might look like reimagined by this team."

At the PlayStation E3 2018 reveal, it was unclear if the game was a PlayStation 4 exclusive or coming to other platforms. Luckily, we reached out to Capcom then and the team provided us with confirmation that Resident Evil 2 was indeed coming to Xbox One, with Xbox One X enhancements in tow. The Xbox Store lists Resident Evil 2 as a "4K Ultra HD" title, but it seems like the game employs a dynamic resolution to maintain a solid 60 FPS.

Resident Evil 2 is a masterclass in video game remakes, putting the horror franchise firmly back in the spotlight. All of the old-school weapons return, including Leon's iconic Magnum pistol that can devastate entire columns of lined up zombies.

Grabbing it is entirely optional to completing the game, however, and many people might miss it entirely. Here's our guide on how to grab it.

How to get the Lightning Hawk Magnum in Resident Evil 2

Grabbing the Magnum is only possible during the mid-game, when you're in the Sewer segment of the game. You'll notice the Magnum initially when you're in the S.T.A.R.S. office on the west side of the second floor of the police station. Once you progress to the sewers, obtaining the Magnum becomes possible, but requires a fair bit of backtracking.

1. First, you'll need the red book from the library on the second floor. It's next to the door that connects to the Main Hall.
2. Next, you'll need the right arm from the statue in the Art Room, on the East side of the Police Station second floor. This is also where the weapon's locker keycard is for Leon's shotgun.

3. Combine the right arm and the red book, and place it back into the statue in the Art Room.
4. The statue will relinquish its sceptre.
5. Inspect the sceptre to obtain the ruby gem.

6. Now, you need the bejewelled box. In Leon Scenario A, it's in the Police Station's Observation Room on the first floor. In Scenario B, it's in the Shower Room on the third floor.Note: To get to the Observation Room, you'll need to go down from the second floor, opening the shutter using the crank handle found in the Police Station's holding cells, in the basement.

7. Combine the bejewelled box with the ruby gem to open it up, and receive the S.T.A.R.S. badge USB stick.Note: Examining the S.T.A.R.S. badge in your inventory reveals that it can be opened like a USB stick.

8. Go back to the S.T.A.R.S. office on the Police Station second floor, and use the S.T.A.R.S. badge to unlock the weapons cabinet at the back of the room via the PC.

9. Now you have the Magnum! Be sure to retrieve the stick after you unlock the Magnum storage. You'll need it later.

How to get the Lightning Hawk Magnum upgrades in Resident Evil 2

The first upgrade is a long barrel, found in a weapon's case on the lower portion of the secret room beneath the statue in the Main Hall of the police station. To open it, simply examine the S.T.A.R.S. badge and close the USB portion of badge, and then insert it into the box. Getting to this location in the right order is easy enough in Leon Scenario B, but in Leon Scenario A, it requires a bit of backtracking.

1. In Scenario A, grab the Sewer Key from near the Cable Car on the Middle Section of the sewers.

2. Backtrack to the Worker's Break Room on the upper section of the sewers. The key will let you in.

3. In the back of the room, there's a hidden elevator behind a cupboard. Push the cupboard to reveal it.

4. The elevator lets you get back to the Secret Room beneath the Police Station Main Hall. The Magnum parts lockbox is on the lower level in this area.

How to get the Lightning Hawk Magnum scope in Resident Evil 2

You can also get a Magnum scope to improve the aiming accuracy of the gun. You'll need the T-shaped crank to do this part.

1. In the upper section of the sewers, head to the Work room.

2. On the table, there's a roll of film that you need to develop, granting two photographs that show the location of the Scope parts.
3. Use the secret elevator in the Worker's Break Room, detailed in the above section.
4. Use the T-shaped crank to open the Secret Room statue wall to re-enter the Police Station. Go back to the police station Dark Room on the west side of the first floor to develop the film.

5. It reveals the location of the Magnum scope in Wesker's Desk in the S.T.A.R.S. office on the second floor of the police station.
6. Head there, and grab your shiny new Magnum scope.

Resident Evil 2 is a masterclass in how to remake a classic game. Based on the hit horror title from 1998, 20 years later Resident Evil 2 has returned to show modern horror games how it's done.

A classic piece of weaponry from the franchise also makes its triumphant return, namely the shotgun, which shreds zombies into cascades of gore, albeit with relatively sparse ammo. The shotgun is also available in the Resident Evil 2 demo, but gaining access is a little different in the full game. Here's how to do it. Do note that the shotgun is only available to Leon.

How to get the shotgun in Resident Evil 2 (Leon Scenario A)

1. Near the start of the game, you'll be able to progress to the third floor by navigating the west rooms of the police station map. Follow the path here. Note: There will be a few zombies throughout the rooms on the way there, so be vigilant.

2. Head up to the third floor using the stairs.
3. At the top of the third floor, there will be a room with a human-like shadow and a desk. Grab the Spade Key from the desk.

4. Once you have the Spade Key, head around to the library, as shown here.

5. Head down the stairs in the library, cross the Main Hall over to the Art Room. You will be able to open the Waiting Room door using the Spade key. Follow the map here.

6. Inside the Art Room, there should be a Weapons Locker Key on a table as you enter. Grab it.

7. While you're in the Art Room, grab both the Locker Key and the Broken Statue Arm key item (which you'll need later for something else), and head back to the Main Hall.
8. Head back to the Safety Deposit Room on the first floor. Note: The safest way is probably back through the library and down the stairs, but you can also try to brave the west 1F halls (which, now, may be swarming with zombies.)
9. Use the Weapons Locker Key on the locker key card panel at the back of the Safety Deposit Room.

10. Viola! You now have a shotgun and some extra ammo to go with it.

How to get the shotgun in Resident Evil 2 (Leon Scenario B)

Grabbing the shotgun in Scenario B (if you played first as Claire) is pretty much the same as Scenario A, but the path to the weapons locker keycard is a bit different. In Scenario B, Leon starts his playthrough at the back of the police station.

1. Once you have gained access to the police station you should have access to the Art Room straight away by going up the fire escape.

2. Head up the fire escape and go into the Art Room.
3. Grab the Weapons locker key card from the table with the Green Lamp.

4. Go back down the Fire escape and into the police station.
5. Head into the Break Room and grab the electrical part.
6. Move into the Watchman's Room. Note: Grab the scrap of paper from the desk, it provides a hint for future puzzles.
7. Use the Cutting tool to open the East Office. Note: The East Office also contains a round handle on the left, be sure to grab it for future use.
8. Head through the opposite door by removing the chair blocking the door.
9. Head towards the Main Hall using the electrical part to open the shutter.
10. Move to the Safety Deposit Room through the west wings of the police station, using the cutting tool to get through the Operations room. Watch out for zombies!

11. Use the Weapons locker key card to access the shotgun at the back of the Safety Deposit Room.

Where to find the shotgun upgrades in Resident Evil 2

You can upgrade the shotgun with various optional parts you can find throughout the game. Here's where to keep a look out for them.

• The first shotgun upgrade is the long barrel and it's located in Kendo's Gunshop on a shelf to the left. You'll end up there as you progress through the story.

• The second shotgun upgrade is the shotgun stock and it's located in a safe in the Treatment pool room during the sewer segment of the game. Use Left 2, right 12, left 8 to open the safe, or view the combination written on the back of the safe in chalk.

Resident Evil 2 is a stunning masterclass in video game remakes, staying true to the original while re-imagining many of the game's puzzles. One of the first you'll encounter is a couple of alphanumerical padlock dials, which keep Leon's desk locked up tight.

The path to the code is pretty simple, but if you're pressed for time, here's what you need to know.

Get the code to open Leon's desk

1. Go to the West Office on the first floor of the police station, accessible via the Operations Room on the west side of the map.

2. Turn left as you enter the room and head to Leon's desk at the far end of the police department office.
3. You will find a note (pictured below) that explains his first assignment is to decipher the locks to his desk.

4. If you follow the initials on each desk, you end up with the code NED MRG.
5. Input the letters into each padlock dial, moving from left to right.
6. The desk will unlock, revealing an extended magazine for Leon's handgun.Note: The reward will differ depending on which scenario you're running, however.

7. Head to your inventory and combine the magazine with your handgun to gain extra ammo capacity.
8. Enjoy increased ammo storage!

Updated January 28, 2019: The Ghost Survivors mode is coming to Resident Evil 2 on February 15.

Resident Evil 2 has always been a difficult game. Aside from limited ammunition and other resources, there is the constant threat of enemies coming out of nowhere. Well, if you want an even more challenging experience, another mode is coming to the game after launch.

According to a Capcom livestream, Resident Evil 2 will get a new mode called "The Ghost Survivors." It's essentially a challenge mode where you earn points and have to spend them on various items. It seems quite similar to Call of Duty "Zombies" to be honest. We should know more about it in the coming months.

At the PlayStation E3 2018 reveal, it was unclear if the game was a PlayStation 4 exclusive or coming to other platforms. Luckily, we reached out to Capcom and the team provided us with confirmation that Resident Evil 2 was indeed coming to Xbox One, with Xbox One X enhancements in tow. The Xbox Store lists Resident Evil 2 as a "4K Ultra HD" title. In an interview with GamingBolt, Capcom Brand Manager Mike Lunn said players also get a 60 FPS option. However, it looks like the Xbox One X may achieve 4K 60 FPS all the time from early analyses of the "One-Shot Demo."

As I type this intro, I am seconds away from having completed Resident Evil 2. As someone who played the original game through dozens of times as a youngster in the late 90s, I find myself in a state of child-like elation all over again.

What a game, I thought to myself over 20 years ago, and I'm happy to report Resident Evil 2 has the same bone-chilling magic it did back in 1998.

Resident Evil 2 (RE2), more so than Resident Evil 1, is probably responsible for popularizing the "survival horror" video game genre, where tense exploration, puzzle solving, and limited supplies make up the basis of play. Resident Evil 2 takes very little away from the PlayStation 1 classic while adding a lot more, with completely rebuilt visuals, writing, sound, and voice acting. RE2 pays close attention to the locations and creatures RE2 veterans will be familiar with, while throwing a range of surprises into the mix. As a fan, there's very little to complain about with the finished product.

Welcome to our review of Resident Evil 2, which is not just one of the best horror games on Xbox One, but one of the best games period.

Visuals and sound: A smorgasbord of glorious gore

Resident Evil 2 has jaw-dropping art direction across the board, which pays homage to its source material while elevating it with some modern flair.

Following on from the work Capcom did with Resident Evil 7, there is a huge emphasis on truly visceral 3-dimensional gore rather than simple projected textures, giving all of Resident Evil 2's weapons a fun, impactful feel. Guns blow holes through zombie's clothes, even out through the other side, leaving chunks of fatty tissue strewn all over the place. It's quite the visual feast.

Beyond the wide range of unique human zombie models, Resident Evil 2 is also well-known for its monstrous menagerie of mutant freaks and overgrown animals. The legendary "Licker" enemies look truly horrific in 2019. Spread inside out by their mutations, blood-flushed muscles glistening in the game's dynamic lighting.

Resident Evil 7's "RE Engine" continues to deliver truly uncanny facial animations, twisting up in fear and pain, which compliment the boosted performance work. Leon, Claire, and the supporting cast also take on all sorts of visual wear and tear as the game progresses, starting with shiny new clothes, and ending the game covered in blood, armed to the teeth.

Resident Evil 2 felt surprisingly light on music compared to its predecessor, insteadgoing for a perpetual air of foreboding ambiance. The game enlists binaural audio to extend the sense of paranoia, offering the sounds of shuffling of zombies (or god knows what else) over in the next room or hallway. This surround treatment is particularly effective when being stalked by the hulking Tyrant super soldier, whose distant thundering boot stomps are straight up panic-inducing.

It's not all peachy though, at least not on Xbox One where we did the majority of our testing. There are some odd graphical glitches present throughout the game, which speak to limitations on the console to some degree. On Xbox One, Capcom seems to have attempted some form of pseudo ray tracing-style reflections on surfaces such as marble floors and in water, but in practice, it looks incredibly pixelated and glitchy. This sorta stuff was probably best left to the PC version.

In addition, some textures here and there look a little incomplete or overly compressed, which betrays how detailed and atmospheric the vast majority of the game looks. Resident Evil 2 runs at 60 FPS on Xbox One X, but it does seem as though image quality was sacrificed to get it there.

While an NVIDIA RTX ray tracing-capable PC will be the best way to experience Resident Evil 2, the Xbox One version is still a visceral and detailed gallery of gore that will chill your senses.

Gameplay: Pick your poison

Resident Evil had a bit of an identity crisis for a while, struggling to strike a balance between the "modern" shooter and the intentionally-awkward, punishing gameplay that the horror classic previously revolved around. In the original, save points were limited, turning was difficult, and ammo was scarce, which is generally at odds with the demands of a mass-market game.

Resident Evil 2 now lets you choose between a more classic "hardcore" mode, complete with consumable ink ribbons to save your game, versus "normal" and "easy" modes, that feature quicksave points, and even regenerating health on the easiest difficulty. The approach should ensure fans of all types are well-catered for.

While normal mode felt a little too easy (finishing the game with piles of un-used first aid sprays and ammo), hardcore mode presents a real challenge, where avoiding conflict often tends to be the better strategy. Resident Evil 2 gives you a range of tools to help out for this type of play, allowing you to board up windows in the police station, as well as use throw-away items like flash-bang grenades and combat knives to stun enemies. Even on normal mode, actually putting a zombie down permanently is quite hard. You never know if that twitching corpse in the hallway is going to leap at your ankles for a cheeky gnaw.

Never trust a corpse...

Beyond your standard zombies, there are far more difficult beasties to deal with. Lickers crawl on walls and can kill you very rapidly, especially on hardcore, but they are also completely blind. Painstakingly eluding them, walking as slowly as possible is anxiety-inducing, as they curiously edge towards your soft footsteps.

The maps recreated for Resident Evil 2 almost perfectly match their static-background counterparts from the late 90s, with truly impressive attention to detail. That said, don't expect to be able to utilize your knowledge of the previous game too much. The path through the game's locations, whether it's the zombie-infested police station or the fetid sewers, are by and large completely different, with new keys, puzzles, and other surprises along the way.

Explore the map, scrounge for ammo, solve the puzzles, find the keys.

All of the classic weaponry from the original Resident Evil 2 makes a return, complete with upgrade kits to scrape and search for. Some weapons and upgrades are entirely optional, depending on how willing you are to puzzle solve or backtrack to that hallway you left teeming with zombies, while others present themselves as part of the story. A non-upgraded weapon might take longer to zero-in when aiming, resulting in missed shots, and then wasted ammunition. I am guilty of wasting entire clips in panic mode while struggling with a licker in a cramped hallway. Picking your shots carefully is crucial to managing your inventory, which is also limited in space.

Resident Evil 2's movement is modernized from its predecessor. You're able to quickly turn in the direction you push your joystick, ditching the "tank" style controls of yesteryear.

Still, Leon and Claire move relatively slowly compared to some shooters out there, which makes positioning intentionally more thoughtful. It's quite easy to get overwhelmed, especially when some of Resident Evil 2's more complex enemies come into play later in the game.

Considering Resident Evil 2 barely tweaks the core concepts, yet remains incredibly tense fun proves that Capcom delivered a timeless horror formula back in 1998. Capcom is not only rediscovering this classic horror format, but it's celebrating it too.

Story: Resident Evil refresh (Spoiler free)

Like the Resident Evil 1 remake, Resident Evil 2 follows all the plot points of the original, while refreshing and fleshing out other aspects. The result is, surprisingly, a more emotional story, with plenty of new memorable moments, while remaining true and faithful to the iconic plot points fans will be looking forward to.

Resident Evil 2 follows on from the events of Resident Evil 1 (also remastered on Xbox One, also awesome), this time taking place in the fictional town of Raccoon City. Playable as both rookie cop Leon Kennedy and unlucky visitor Claire Redfield, Resident Evil 2 features a city-wide biological catastrophe, where a viral outbreak has created swarms of reanimated corpses and other twisted, violent creatures.

You will play through as both Leon and Claire experiencing different paths through the story, meeting different characters, uncovering different aspects of the wider mystery.

Without giving away too much for those who haven't played, Resident Evil 2 is more of a personal tale than some of the other games in the series, focusing entirely on Leon and Claire and the other survivors they meet. Resident Evil 2 remains a bit self-referential with its writing, unable to resist cheesy one-liners that spawned some of the franchise's most popular memes. That said, some of the new scenes it introduces have been truly moving, which is typically not something I expect of Resident Evil.

Some of the monsters and characters have been given expanded roles and significance in the story, which adds clarity to some of the fuzzier plot points of the original. However, there does feel like some missed opportunities to add more depth. For example, Leon and Claire still don't seem even the slightest bit concerned about the possibility of getting infected, despite being bitten constantly, and despite the fact that there are corpses with hazmat suits lying around all over the place. Neither of them seem too phased by what's going on either, which is a little at odds with the attempts to inject more emotion into the plot.

Resident Evil 2 won't win any Oscars, and there are certainly some missed opportunity to have further expanded the scope of the story, more similarly to how the Resident Evil 1 remake fared. However, there are shades of fresh ambition in among the returning iconic scenes that give me renewed hope for the franchise.

Final Thoughts: Resident Evil is truly back

Resident Evil 7 was not a fluke. Capcom is clearly willing and able to commit to a modernized Resident Evil formula that retains what made the series so popular in the first place, while making it appealing to modern standards. The visuals are goretastic, the sound work is nail-bitingly paranoia-inducing, and the gunplay is oh so satisfying.

Resident Evil 2 retains some of that b-movie-style writing cheese, but the attempts Capcom made to inject more emotion into proceedings while fleshing out other aspects of the story undoubtedly pushed the game beyond the original. It all leaves me hungry to see what other classics like Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Code Veronica, and Resident Evil 4 might look like reimagined by this team.

Pros:

• Stunning blood-spattered art direction.
• Masterful use of surround sound to build tension.
• Incredibly satisfying gunplay.
• Nostalgia trip like no other.

Cons:

• Dialogue and writing is still on the cheesy side.
• May feel a bit brief for $59.99.

A single Resident Evil 2 playthrough consists of running through the story as both Leon and Claire, meeting different characters and exploring intersecting areas. Running through Scenario "A" and "B" will net you around 10-12 hours of play, depending on how much exploration you do, while completionists looking to unlock the hidden scenarios and additional weapons on hardcore difficulty will find they can get even more out of the game. Resident Evil 2 is designed for speed running as well, similarly to the original, grading players at the end based on how fast they were able to run through it. The Xbox version also features a lot of fun, relatively lenient achievements.

As far as recommendations are concerned, I think "Normal" is far too easy for veterans of the series, or even fans of horror in general. You'll end up with piles of ammo and health items at the end, even if you gun down the majority of enemies you see. The auto save feature that occurs before some of the game's more difficult moments drains the tension out a bit, too. So if you're brave enough, stick it on hardcore for a more definitive Resident Evil 2 experience.

I had high expectations for Resident Evil 2, and Capcom delivered. This is the best horror game on Xbox One today, and one of its best single-player experiences in general.

With the new version coming out in a few weeks, Capcom seems to have increased the bizarre additions to the game. Today, the company announced that you can also play as tofu in the Resident Evil 2 remake. Yes, tofu, the food. That wasn't written in error.

"The Tofu Survivor" is basically a parody of "The 4th Survivor," otherwise known as Hunk. According to the official description, instead of "Hunk," you play as a giant block of tofu, which is a nod to the character found in the original PlayStation 1 game. The goal is to escape Raccoon City by reaching the helicopter before the timer runs out. Tofu might seem hilarious, but it's going to be quite challenging. You're only armed with a combat rifle and some questionable "herbs." I'm pretty sure this is even harder than The 4th Survivor, but we'll have to find out on January 25, 2019.

Resident Evil 2, one of the most beloved entries in the franchise, is set to make its return on January 25. Ahead of its launch, Capcom hasn't been shy about sharing gameplay footage, and the latest takes us into a tense battle with one of the game's most iconic enemies: the Licker.

During my trip to PAX West last weekend, I saw plenty of amazing games and shops on the convention show floor. However, all booths are not created equal, and five of them were definitely cooler than the competition.

Indie Games Polska

Of all of the indie-focused booths, Indie Games Polska was by far my favorite. Featuring a wide array of upcoming titles from several different Polish developers, the Indie Games Polska booth was full of exciting new experiences to try out. Everything from puzzle games to platformers were available to play, and it was awesome to see what the talented Polish game industry is creating for gamers next.

Dauntless

An interesting game coming out on PC that was at PAX West was Dauntless, a cooperative monster hunting game in which you and three others work together in a class-based scenario in order to kill a creature within a time limit. It feels like a more stylized and accessible version of Monster Hunter: World, which we loved. It's available in open beta now, so make sure to check out the link above to the Dauntless website.

Glitchgear

Featuring merchandise centered around classic franchises like Borderlands, Team Fortress, Half-Life, and Portal, the Glitchgear booth was essentially the place to go if you wanted to represent your love of the 2008-2012 era of gaming. As someone who grew up playing several of these franchises, I absolutely loved this booth, and I recommend you check out Glitchgear's website so you can order some of the things they had available at PAX.

Fangamer

Whereas Glitchgear focuses on titles from a decade ago, the Fangamer merchandise booth specialized in modern indie hits. Everything from Shovel Knight to Stardew Valley was represented at this booth, and chances are, if there is a popular indie game you love, Fangamer will have something based on it available. Like Glitchgear, they have a website, so make sure to check it out.

Resident Evil 2

The Resident Evil 2 remake coming to all platforms next year was available to play at PAX West, but what I found awesome about the booth itself was that it was a giant scary police station prop. Dimly lit and outfitted with various sound effects, just walking into the Resident Evil 2 booth was an unforgettable experience. I wish all of the booths had this kind of presentation.

Resident Evil 2 is among the best of Capcom's iconic horror series and now scheduled for a return via a full remake on modern systems. As unveiled at E3 2018, the opportunity to revisit Racoon City will soon arise, rebuilt in its entirety for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Although the remake will embrace parallel themes to the 1998 predecessor, it also pledges to correct flaws and adapt the game to modern standards. Faith to the original will be a treat for series veterans and its revitalized return will also welcome a new audience. The end result brings changes in presentation and gameplay, while still feeling distinctly like Resident Evil 2.

After spending 20 minutes with a pre-release demo, the game is shaping up as a strong horror experience to kick off 2019.

Next-level authenticity for Resident Evil 2

Unlike most Resident Evil 2 previews, I'm approaching the remake from a broader angle, having only briefly experienced the source material. While my familiarity with the Resident Evil franchise is limited, it has still established a renowned legacy, despite criticism of recent titles. Following the well-received Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, my hopes are high for Capcom's next survival horror venture. This ultimately leaves me approaching Resident Evil 2's revival with a fresh outlook on its world and how it falls into today's horror landscape.

The core formula of Resident Evil has been widely adopted throughout the horror genre, pitting players against otherworldly zombies in a fight for survival. Caution, adaptability, and a keen eye are essential, unearthing puzzles and key items to progress. It's a proven formula synonymous with the best entries, returning for the Resident Evil 2 remake.

Given its nature, Resident Evil 2 has been rebuilt from scratch, while using the original title as a reference. The upcoming homage reinforces the same fundamental themes, while modern design standards make for an easier world to revisit in the 21st century. Expect the same general narrative, characters, and locations, reworked for the latest "RE Engine."

Our hands-on explored the Racoon City Police Department, as protagonist Leon rounds up survivors after the t-Virus outbreak. Leon is faced with navigating sprawling hallways and gloomy rooms while surviving the zombie onslaught. Comparing the demo with original game footage, most locations are represented close to their original form. Even if you don't plan to play the original, viewing side-by-side comparisons is impressive.

Alone in the dark

For existing Resident Evil 2 fans, the most jarring change is a shift from a fixed camera to an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective. This eliminates the detached feeling of the original and puts players directly into the action of Leon or Claire. While some praised the fixed camera's feeling of vulnerability, Resident Evil 7 proved that deeper immersion can still achieve comparable results.

To avoid feeling like a third-person shooter, aspects of combat have been tailored to reduce its presence in each playthrough. One major component is a new aiming system, which heavily punishes players for shooting on the move. Its implementation encourages players to slow down and line up shots, and paired with limited resources, sometimes engaging isn't the best option.

Resident Evil 2's revision makes zombies more menacing too, being harder and fiercer to oppose. Immersion is further bolstered through expanded zombie dismemberment, allowing you to target certain body parts for specific effects. Topping this off, the engine enhancements allow for a gruesome "wet gore," making for staggeringly brutal scenes up-close with zombies. All aspects of this were showcased in our demo, making for genuinely memorable encounters.

These are among the few elements that comprise Resident Evil 2's immersive environments, thriving on pure atmosphere tension. It's the fear of the unknown that keeps you weary, while equally inquisitive to keep exploring. While 20 years later the game isn't as unique among the competition, the remake retains the distinct charm of the series.

Today, Capcom announced an extremely special Collector's Edition for the game. According to the company, Resident Evil 2: Collector's Edition is the ultimate Resident Evil 2 experience and is designed as a reproduction of the familiar item boxes that shown up throughout Raccoon City. The package contains the following items.

• Resident Evil 2: Deluxe Edition
• Item Box packaging
• Leon Kennedy figure
• "Ben's File" book
• Digital soundtrack
• "R.P.D." poster

Now comes the price. The Collector's Edition will set you back $199.99 and it's only available at GameStop in North America. Select retailers will also carry in other territories.

As much as I love Resident Evil, as the survival horror series progressed beyond its fourth instalment, it began failing to meet gamer's expectations.

Capcom is likely aware of this fact, given that Resident Evil's Xbox One remake broke various sales records. Resident Evil HD became the fast selling digital title in Capcom's history, and also became the fastest selling day one title on the Playstation Network.

The company began testing the waters for a Resident Evil 2 remake a few weeks ago. A member of Capcom's R&D team submitted a conceptual document to the Capcom higher up's, and it seems as though they got approval.

Resident Evil 2 HD's producer Yoshiaki Hirabyashi announced the remake on YouTube earlier today, acknowledging that it could be some time before we receive another update.

Hopefully, Hirabyashi's comments indicate that Capcom won't change Resident Evil 2's winning gameplay formula in detrimental ways.

Resident Evil 2 launched in 1998 originally, using the same limiting controls and claustrophobic static camera angles as its predecessor. The Resident Evil 1 Gamecube remake retained the static camera, only opting to polish the game's visuals and audio. The Xbox One and PS4 version offered updated control schemes, allowing for more fluid movement. The classic controls remained as an option.

Capcom is currently giving Resident Evil 0 the same treatment, and I dare say we could see Resident Evil 3 HD down the line if RE2 is successful.

Let's hope Capcom take the remake's popularity into consideration when building Resident Evil 7.
