Social media platform Snapchat's history with Microsoft's Windows-based ecosystem has been complicated, to say the least. In the past, Snapchat has seemingly done everything except support Windows or Windows phones, even building AR glasses, but that all changes today. Snapchat is in the Microsoft Store, as of this month.

For years, the lack of Snapchat on Microsoft's now-dormant Windows phones was a constant hot topic of discussion in the community (this Windows Central article from 2015 gives you a quick overview from the period, with 400 reader comments to boot). Long after the entire mobile Windows platform was shuttered by Microsoft, Snapchat is finally making its appearance in the Microsoft Store as a Progressive Web App, or a PWA.

What does this mean? The app is built on the web version of Snapchat — which only launched a few months ago — and is powered by Microsoft's Chromium-based Microsoft Edge. That means a tiny 1.4MB install size, and it guarantees that Snapchat is always up to date and has the exact same features as the web version. Since it works through Microsoft Edge, Windows will still treat it like a native app — including an app icon in the Start Menu, notification support, and more.

You'll need a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, of course. Snapchat's denial of Windows phones may have partially contributed to the platform's demise, but it's far too late for any one social media app to suddenly breathe life into the phones that, by this point, are resting comfortably in drawers all over the world. Now, instead of trying to coerce developers into supporting its mobile platforms, Microsoft is reportedly taking the fight straight to Google and Apple by building its own mobile app store.

If you're interested in perusing your Snapchat messages or stories from your favorite Windows laptop, or in taking pictures for Snapchat on your computer (for some reason), you can download the Snapchat PWA from the Microsoft Store for free right now. Or spitefully avoid it in remembrance of the Windows phones that came before.

• Verizon will preload the Snapchat app and exclusive AR filters on select 5G phones.
• Snapchat will launch exclusive 5G powered AR filters during the NFL's Super Bowl LIV.

Verizon has announced a partnership with Snap Inc, the parent company that owns the popular social media app, Snapchat, to show the advantages of Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband network through exclusive augmented reality (AR) experiences.

The two companies will explore 5G possibilities by working on marketing campaigns with exclusive distribution through each other. For example, Verizon will preload the Snapchat app, along with exclusive AR features, on select 5G Verizon phones, and Verizon would be the principal sponsor for Snap Originals.

In an official press release, Snap chief strategy officer Jared Grusd said, "We are thrilled to partner with Verizon to move the industry forward through the development of creative and innovative 5G experiences on Snapchat."

5G would be a big boost for not only AR and VR, but also give Snapchat's 203 million active users and every Verizon subscriber a powerful network to have more engagement with friends, family, and colleagues. On the commercial side, it would mean big business for brands during live sporting events, concerts, and more.

Merging Verizon's 5G with Snapchat's AR technology would mean you could have access to professional sports and concerts in ways you've never had before. For example, you could use Snapchat's Landmarker technology to have an AR version of you and your friends backstage at a concert, or in the locker room of your favorite team after a big win. Since it's on a 5G network, it would all be in real-time with almost no latency issues.

Verizon has also partnered with other companies such as Walt Disney Studios, which could bring a 5G network to Disney themed parks.

The telecommunications company has also partnered with the NFL. It has awarded two separate $400,000 grants to AR/VR developers Colorfiction and Juncture Media to create augmented reality mobile games that would debut during the NFL's Super Bowl LIV in Miami and take advantage of Verizon's 5G network.

There is no doubt that 5G will be huge for AR and VR. It's a match made in high-speed data heaven. Verizon's new partnership with Snap Inc. shows that the tech companies know this too. Between purchasing Jaunt VR back in October and now working with Snap Inc, it's obvious Verizon is positioning itself to lead the charge of delivering a 5G network across the country. Currently, Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband network can be found in 18 cities in the U.S. However, the goal is to expand that coverage to 30 cities by the end of this year.

Yes, one month from now.

Fitbit and Snap are teaming up to make clock faces on your Versa or Ionic a little more emotive. The two companies have launched a Bitmoji clock face for both Fitbit lines, which can update throughout your day to reflect your activity and, maybe, motivate you to get moving.

The clock face includes more than 50 variations of your Bitmojis, according to Fitbit's press release. Each one is meant to respond to feats you've accomplished or add a bit of motivation to "create healthy habits." According to Fitbit, some of the variations include:

• Waving hello to start your day.
• Dancing with your alarm clock when it's time to rise and shine.
• Throwing confetti after you crush your daily step goal.
• Relaxing when you've binged too many of your favorite shows.
• Meditating when you're totally relaxed and zen.
• On the treadmill after a great run.
• Becoming an avocado when you log food2 -- you are what you eat, literally.
• Carrying an umbrella when there's a chance of rain so you don't get caught in a downpour.
• Sleep walking when it's time to catch some Zzs.

Among Windows enthusiasts, the lack of a Snapchat app during Windows 10 Mobile's heyday was a bit of a sore point. That's still not changing, but Snap today surprised everyone by launching a desktop app for Windows. But don't get too excited: this isn't the full Snapchat experience.

Called Snap Camera, the new app lets you use one of Snapchat's most iconic features, lenses, with your PC's webcam. While you still won't be able to send snaps back and forth to your friends like you can on mobile, Snap Camera lets you spice up your video chats, game streaming sessions, and anything else that uses your camera.

Yes, that means you can add a set of virtual puppy dog ears to your head the next time you're in a Skype chat. Just try to remember to turn it off before any business meetings.

For game streamers, in particular, Snap Camera has some interesting additions. There's a dedicated Twitch extension that you can use to "reward new subscribers with custom Lens reactions," according to Snap. But the app also includes some special lenses that can turn you into characters from popular games like World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and PlayerUknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG).

It may not be the full-fledged Snapchat app many were begging for on Windows 10 Mobile, but Snap Camera looks to be a fun addition for Windows. If you want to check it out for yourself, you can download Snap Camera for free right now.

One which Windows Phone/Snapchat fans would immediately jump in the air at reading, because it seems to suggest that support may finally, one day, actually be planned. HUZZAH! Right?

For fear of getting disappointed again, we should try and curb the excitement. Because none of this is in any way a 'confirmation' that Snapchat 'gave in' or anything.

The "it" being Snapchat for Windows Phone. But considering the company's seeming lack of interest, even complete disregard, of Windows Phone as a platform, it's tough to see what may finally have changed their minds. The new Android/iOS app porting tools? Microsoft throwing a ton of cash their way? The CEO finally woke up one morning and realized the error of his ways?

So, maybe there is hope. But try not to get too excited just yet. Remember who this is that we're dealing with.

Windows Phone users do not have an official Snapchat application, but 6discover, the latest app from Rudy Huyn, offers one of the major features. You won't be able to create, view, or share snaps with friends. You also won't be able to use 6discover to chat or create stories. You use 6discover for Snapchat's Discover section, which was introduced by the company earlier this year. It lets you see articles, photos and videos from different publications such as CNN, Food Network, Vice, Bleacher Report, and National Geographic.

When you open 6discover, you see thumbnails of the different channels available. Tap to open a channel, swipe left to skim through Snaps and swipe up on a Snap to learn more. Each Snap can be an animated photo or a shorter clip of a video. When you swipe up, you'll see an article or the longer video for more details. You can expect new content for each channel every day.

The swipe actions on 6discover are very similar to the actions found in the official Snapchat app for Android and iOS. What makes 6discover unique from the official app is that it lets you change your region. You can select the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and International. Since the social aspect of Snapchat is missing from 6discover, you don't need an account to use the app.

6discover is a free download from the Windows Phone Store. It is ad-supported, so you'll notice ads at the bottom of the screen when viewing Snap details. There is currently no in-app purchase available to remove the ads.

It's worth mentioning that Snapchat's legal team has sent developer Rudy Huyn a letter accusing him of "violation of federal and state law" for reproducing the Snapchat "Discover" content. We don't know if the app will be removed or where things will go from here.

Well, that did not take long. Snapchat's legal team has sent developer Rudy Huyn a letter accusing him of "violation of federal and state law" for reproducing the Snapchat "Discover" content. The missive comes just 24-hours after the release of 6discover, a new, free app that pulls the Snapchat Discover content and bypassing Snapchat's official app feature.

The issue appears to be about money, ultimately. Discover is a way for companies to produce and distribute content through Snapchat. Companies like Comedy Central, Vice, and CNN pay Snapchat for this privilege, in essence making it an advertising platform.

The problem is, 6discover pulls the content but does not return on the analytics. Therefore, Snapchat cannot count the Windows Phone app views in their data sent back to their customers – those media conglomerates mentioned above – and charge them appropriately.

Considering Snapchat's CEO Evan Spiegel does not think Windows Phone worthy enough of a Snapchat app due to little market share it is rather ironic to point out that 6discover could hurt them in any way.

For his part, Huyn has responded on Twitter (and presumably in writing) to Snapchat noting "we can work together on Analytics to include #windowsphone users to your stats and improve Discover visibility". He also tweets that his app has no privacy or security issues, making the problem even more trivial.

However, it is doubtful Snapchat will take him up on his offer.

For now, it is unclear if the app will be removed or where things go from here. One thing is certain, Snapchat as a company, while legally correct, is taking a very aggressive attitude against Windows Phone users. A position that could be attenuated simply making an official Snapchat app for Windows Phone, something for which Huyn has offered to do in the past.

After some teasing on Twitter, popular Windows Phone dev Rudy Huyn has released his sixth app today. The new addition to the "six" family is 6discover, and it rides on the coattails of his earlier Snapchat app 6snap (infamously removed due to that company's complaint).

Huyn's 6discover, however, is not a full Snapchat client due to the complaints above. Instead, it is a dedicated app for Discover, a service introduced earlier this year by Snapchat. At the time, we noted that Discover was "like Snapchat Stories but for online video and photo publications" and serves as a creative outlet for media companies. You can think of it as a fancy newsreader.

From the 6discover Store Description:

To navigate within the app, choose a channel. Once opened, you can swipe left or right to change stories, then swipe up for the full text of that article. Hitting the back Windows key will bring you back to the previous menu.

In some ways, 6discover is better than what official Snapchat apps offer, as it includes these exclusive features for Windows Phone users:

• No need for authentication
• Switch between regions (US, UK, Australia, Canada, International)

If you're new to the platform in particular, you might be wondering why you can't have it. After all, iPhone and Android owners have it, right?

With there being no hope for the third-party offerings we did have, here's a run down of the tale of Snapchat and Windows Phone.

No official app

That's the first and most important thing in this whole story. Snapchat doesn't have an official app for Windows Phone. And it doesn't look like it plans to have one any time in the foreseeable future.

But why is that?

Snapchat CEO, Evan Spiegel, evidently doesn't care much for Windows Phone.

Then there was the time you could request support for your currently unsupported device. And then there was the time that went away. Whatever the actual reason behind it, the only official way to pressure Snapchat for an app disappeared into the night.

Will that ever change? Will Snapchat ever relent and release an official app for Windows Phone? We're not holding our breath.

The tale of the third-party

Where official support is lacklustre, or completely absent, the excellent Windows Phone developer community often comes through. Instagram is a fine example of this. Despite having an official app, it's been over a year since it was updated and there are third-party solutions that offer a much better experience.

So, in the absence of Snapchat, enter the likes of Swapchat, 6Snap and a few others.

6Snap in particular went on to become a community favorite. Developer, Rudy Huyn, is a committed and talented Windows Phone developer. As with his Instagram app, 6Tag, 6Snap arguably had a better overall user experience than the official Snapchat apps on other platforms.

Support from source is something we'd always welcome. But as long as there's a good solution, it's not the end of the world.

So what happened?

Snapchat had some security issues. After a huge number of users photos were stolen and posted online, Snapchat clamped down on allowing third-party services access.

Apps such as 6Snap used reverse-engineered APIs to get them into Snapchat. And it was third-party apps that were ultimately responsible for the security breach.

So, in a not totally unjustifiable move, Snapchat started to clamp down on its users not sending their Snaps through official channels. First by offering a warning, then by locking accounts, and then the biggest blow of all, having third-party apps removed from the Store.

And that means as of right now, Windows Phone has no Snapchat. At all.

The future

Snapchat was supposedly developing a public API of some sort. But that still hasn't materialized. And despite the best efforts of people like Rudy Huyn, Snapchat doesn't want to know.

So, the future, if you're a Snapchatter, is bleak on Windows Phone. It's a sad state of affairs, but it's the world we live in. What would it take for Snapchat to give in and make an app? Who knows.

A change of attitude towards the platform would be top of the list.

File this under no surprise, but developer of popular third-party Snapchat app, Rudy Huyn, has confirmed that there is no hope of a future return to the Windows Phone Store. Snapchat still isn't playing ball, but Huyn has teased something for the future.

Sadly Snapchat remains one of the most high profile services not represented on Windows Phone, and that doesn't look like coming to an end any time soon. Looking to more positive news, Huyn will have more new apps for us soon, and the message posted today has us intrigued as to what they're going to be.

In the ongoing race to win over support for Windows Phone, Snapchat is the top of the pack when it comes to companies snubbing the Microsoft platform.

Joining the likes of Pebble, Snapchat is evidently getting tired of pesky Windows Phone users requesting an app. As if it were not enough to get app stores to remove third-party apps and turn down developers willing to make an official Snapchat client, the company has now removed their feedback system for requesting device support.

The feature was found under the Snapchat website's 'feedback' section that includes numerous areas like feature requests or just sending them praise for being so original (sarcasm level: high).

Users have begun to notice that the area dubbed 'Support My Incompatible Device' is now missing in action. It was in this field that people could request Windows Phone support for the picture-sharing service.

Presumably, Windows Phone users began to irritate the Snapchat team as they have now cut off the section entirely. Some people have speculated that this may mean they are working on an app, but Windows Central has no indication that this is the case. Indeed, Reddit user luxtabula pointed out that they have zero job requests for Windows or Windows Phone on their open jobs board.

Snapchat's young CEO Evan Spiegel does not have the nicest reputations around, even joking about no one using Windows Phone in late 2013. In that sense, perhaps it is of no surprise that his company would be antagonistic towards its fans.

Until Snapchat comments on the website change or the prospects of a Windows Phone app, we will have to remain in the dark.

Looking through the Windows Phone Store today will alert you to the fact that there doesn't appear to be unofficial Snapchat apps available for consumers to download. 6snap, arguably one of the most popular third-party apps for Windows Phone, has also disappeared. The developer, Rudy Huyn, took to Twitter to confirm that the app (among others) have indeed been pulled.

It was only last month when we covered the service beginning to clamp down on third-party apps, sending out emails to users who have been utilizing said portals and threatening permanent account lock should they continue doing so. It's a strange move by Snapchat, should the removal of third-party apps be down to a case of request, since the service currently does not offer an official app of its own.

For now, you'll be unable to download 6snap or other third-party Snapchat apps from the Windows Phone Store. Also, we've received reports from readers that Snapchat have indeed acted on their earlier threats by locking their accounts due to using third-party software.

We'll update you all with more details as we get them.

Snapchat has a had a rough few weeks in terms of security. People's photos were allegedly stolen and posted online recently through the use of a third-party apps. Those apps used reversed-engineered APIs to access the service, which creates a significant vulnerability in account security.

Now, the company appears to be taking a hardline against the practice by sending out emails to those who have been utilizing third-party apps, including 6snap found on Windows Phone.

On iOS and Android, avoiding third-party apps is much easier than Windows Phone since the former operating systems have official apps. Windows Phone does not, so people need to rely on apps like 6snap by developer Rudy Huyn or they must go without.

For what it is worth, Snapchat has said they will develop a public API to avoid such security breaches in the future. However, there is no ETA on when that API development will be completed.

For now, users will evidently have to stop using third-party apps on Windows Phone (and Android and iOS) or risk having their accounts permanently locked. However, the consequences are obviously more dramatic for those with a Windows Phone.

Unofficial Snapchat app 6snap for Windows Phone has been updated. The developer, Rudy Huyn, has added some cool new pruning options for users in version 3.2. This new functionality enables users to better manage conversations on their Windows Phone. Previously, we looked at Huyn implementing major performance and design improvements.

So what can users do with this latest update? It's now possible to clear a specific conversation or prune absolutely everything in the app and start fresh. These are highly anticipated features that makes life easier. After a spurned attempt to acquire Snapchat for $3 billion last year, Facebook is gearing up to launch its own ephemeral messaging app, internally codenamed "Slingshot". The app, which is said to have a "simple and speedy user interface" (not unlike Snapchat) is designed to take on Snapchat with short video and photo messages that disappear after one viewing. The app has reportedly been in the works for several months, and might launch as early as this month.

While the operation of Snapchat is relatively traditional, Financial Times reports that Slingshot's interface will be even more streamlined:

Facebook recently discontinued their standalone Poke and Camera apps for iPhone. They've also launched new apps, like Paper, and separated Messages from the main Facebook app, and promised to launch several more standalone apps that still tie into the Facebook platform.

Unlike Paper which repackages the traditional Facebook feed, and Messages which has been a long-standing feature of Facebook, Slingshot's view-it-and-forget-it model would be a new on for Facebook.

Facebook did recently purchase popular messaging platform WhatsApp for $16 billion, giving them a greater messaging expertise that might be useful in taking on Snapchat.

But the question remains: is a Facebook version of WhatsApp something that's been missing from your life?

Last week Snapchat updated their official apps on Android and iOS with the text chat and video calling. We don’t have an official Snapchat app yet for Windows Phone, but we do have 6snap. It’s a stellar third-party Snapchat client for Windows Phone. The developer, Rudy Huyn, has just released a beta version of 6snap that allows Windows Phone users to participate in the new Snapchat features. Download it now!

The sneak peek of version 3.0 of 6snap gives you access to chat conversations. Now you can talk to your Android and iOS friends who have been using the feature over the past week. If you already have 6snap installed you’ll need to sign out. Snapchat doesn’t allow two applications to be connected to their servers at the same time, so you’ll be kicked out of your sessions.

In the 'snaps' view you'll see a chat bubble on the far right. Tap that to start talking to your friends!

Earlier this week, Snapchat announced new chatting and video calling features for their iOS app (with the update for Android coming later). Like everything else on Snapchat, conversations and videos all disappear once you leave the app. It’s yet another sign that Snapchat is becoming more of a big deal these days, and yet there’s still no Windows Phone app.

Unfortunately, nothing has yet solidified about an official app coming to Microsoft’s platform. Sure we have unofficial apps like 6snap, but nothing beats having that first-party experience, especially when new features are announced.

Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore had a terse reply to the question about Snapchat coming to Windows Phone and would only confirm that they are at least talking with the company. That’s good news and bad news, as talks mean any app development and release wouldn’t happen until later this year. Regardless, Microsoft is at least trying and Snapchat is listening.

No official Snapchat app for Windows Phone? No problem. 6snap is the best Snapchat client for Windows Phone and probably just the best Snapchat app on any platform. Today it picked up another updated, version 2.5 that brings a few new features. Let’s check it out.

The last update for 6snap was version 2.4. If you had a Windows Phone with GDR2 or above you’d be able to view snaps without having to hold down the screen. It’s a setting and really awesome for viewing snaps without having your finger in the way. It also introduced support for new sign up security from Snapchat and improved performance. Today version 2.5 is in the Windows Phone Store and brings the following:

• Add zoom when you take a picture
• Add indicators to show when snaps are in pending state or replayed by receiver
• Improve story support of videos with text/drawing  

Now when you’re snapping a pic with 6snap you’ll have the ability to zoom in. This is during the picture taking process and not after you’ve captured.

You’ll also find better story support with text and drawings. Indicators have also been added to show when snaps are in a pending state or replayed by a receiver. The screenshot above shows the new icons in action. You’ll only get this functionality right now if you log out then log back into 6snap. Rudy has already submitted an updated (version 2.5.1) that will address this issue.

Quickly record videos, add captions and swap them privately with your friends. It’s like putting Snapchat and Vine together in one app. The app has been available on Android and iOS, but has just been released for Windows Phone 8.

First time users need to register with a phone number. You also need to have friends using GIF Chat so they can view the GIFs. You can send invitations via SMS or email in the settings page.

Tap the red button to start recording up to 6 seconds. Set the loop speed with the slider at the bottom. Slide left for slow motion or right to go faster. You can set the number of loops on the left side. By default, the animated GIF disappears after 3 loops. You also choose to loop the GIF over and over. Add text and then send it privately to a friend just like a text message.

Unlike 6snap (Snapchat app for Windows Phone), you can’t move the position of the image caption. You also can’t draw on the GIF.

We’re also disappointed that there’s no way to tap on a subject to focus before recording. There are only two camera options available. You can change between the front or rear cameras and you can turn on or off the camera light.

6snap, the popular unofficial Snapchat app for Windows Phone has just received a noteworthy update. Version 1.3 brings new languages, better quality of picture capture, and more. If you haven’t heard of Snapchat, it’s a photo and video messaging service that lets users set a time limit for how long recipients can view their ‘Snaps.’ Read on for the change log.

• better quality of photo camera
• show recent friends on 'choose friends' page
• remove red waves (text correction) when add text
• show number of sent/received snaps when click on snapchat title
• improve performance and security

According to a recent report from Business Insider, Snapchat has about 60 million total installs and 30 million monthly active users. There is no official Snapchat application for Windows Phone, but 6snap by Rudy Huyn, does a great job bringing the service to our favorite platform.

Just like the official apps on Android and iOS, there are main panels that you can switch between by swiping. The left panel is your inbox. It shows snaps received from your friends and also the status of the snaps you send. The middle screen is the camera. Click to take a photo or hold to record a video. The right screen is your friends list. You can add friends by clicking the icon on the top right corner.

After taking a photo, you can select the duration on by clicking the bottom left icon. You can choose up to 10 seconds. Want to edit the image before sending it away? There are filters available, but it’s more fun using the pencil tool. Use the pencil to draw over the photo. Not feeling artistic? Just click on the image to type the text.

When you’re done just click the arrow and select which friends to send it to.

Technically speaking, it’s been a slow week, mostly due to the hangover from last week’s holiday festivities. In reality though, you probably have noticed that developers have been busy tweaking and improving their apps. We’ve covered a bunch of ‘em but there are still more. Today, we know of two pretty big updates that are well worth your time.

Both Miniclip’s Rail Rush, a freebie and Nokia exclusive game, got a Christmas bonus and Huyn’s Snapchat client, 6snap, received a few new features as well. Here are the details.

Rail Rush 1.5 (Lumia exclusive game)

Version 1.5 of Rail Rush is now available. The endless-runner game, akin to Temple Run but with a miner’s cart, has won our hearts due to the bold graphics and addicting gameplay. It’s a really great game that just got a little more endearing with its recent update.

This update has one purpose: Christmas. Launching the game, you’ll notice a new splash screen, winter layout, Christmas-esque music and a bonus level called Snow Land. Snow Land is beautifully designed winter wonderland where you cart has Christmas decorations and you grab ornaments from the air. Awesome. We're totally down with holiday-themed games, so this one wins.

It’s cute. It’s timely. And it’s free. Rail Rush is one of a few endless-runner games out there, but we’re fans of Miniclip , so this one is on the top of our Christmas list. How about yours?

6snap 1.2.1

Earlier this week we say Rudy Huyn’s 6snap get a solid update with new features, including landscape support and new filters on board. Today’s update is not nearly as big, but it’s still significant, especially if you like using that front-facing camera. This update fixes some issues users were having with their front shooter, at least for “low resolution” ones and it brings a few other knickknacks.

• Fix front camera on device with a low resolution front camera
• Support "Team Snapchat" videos
• Allow multi-line text on pictures
• Add a menu "clear all drawings"
• Drastically improves video quality on low memory devices

We’re not users of Snapchat but even we recognize those are noteworthy changes, features and fixes. If you’re a big fan of Snapchat, make sure you pick up version 1.2.1, which is now live in the Store.

Last week we told you about the impending update for 6snap, Rudy Huyn’s popular Snapchat client for Windows Phone. Today, version 1.2 is now live in the Store, ready for your latest snaps.

That’s a fairly significant changelog and makes 6snap more full-featured than the official apps found on Android and iOS. It’s also great to see Huyn bringing over some of his other features from 6tag, his Instagram client, which also received an update today.

If you use Snapchat or want to on Windows Phone, 6snap is currently your only option. Perhaps someday there will be an official app, but until now, 6snap nicely fills in that gap.

Rudy Huyn’s Snapchat client 6snap so far has survived being an unofficial clone of the popular messaging app. That’s the good news for those worried about an immediate copyright complaint.

The even better news is that after this week’s 1.1 update, version 1.2 has just been submitted to the Store. It won’t arrive probably at least until Monday, but in case you want a heads up, here’s what is coming.

Sounds like he’s porting over some of his 6tag features to 6snap, which seems like a good idea. In short, with this update, 6snap will begin to surpass any official offering from Snapchat. But, that should not be a surprise to any of you, especially if you use 6tag or 6sec, right?

As we said, version 1.2 won’t be in the Store for a few days, so sit tight and get excited. We’ll keep you posted as soon as the app is published.

6snap is getting its first update today in the Windows Phone Store. The app is a fully functioning Snapchat client for Windows Phone and comes to us from Rudy Huyn. Let’s check out what’s new inside the latest version of 6snap.

6snap first came out last week and was met with positive feedback from the community. It was a fully functioning Snapchat client that worked well and gave users all the features you’d want. But you know Rudy, he doesn’t rest until the app is perfect. Head to the Windows Phone Store and you’ll see version 1.1.0.0 sitting there. Here’s what’s new with it:

• Automatically downloads snaps on Wi-Fi (option under settings)
• View snaps in progress without needing to tap and hold (just click it)
• Last camera used (front/back) is saved in the memory
• Mirror effect is permanent now with the front facing camera
• Option to send snaps to everyone
• Search for friends without needing their phone number
• Minor bug fixes

The option to send a mass snap to all your friends will certainly be appealing to a majority of you who use Snapchat on a regular basis. Just make sure you don’t click that when you’re trying to send something to just one person (if you know what I mean). The option to automatically download received snaps over Wi-Fi is also a very welcomed addition to the app. We’ll be using that right away.

If there’s one app left standing for Windows Phone users, it would be Snapchat. The popular photo messaging app that allows your pics to ‘expire’ after a pre-determined viewing time does not have an official client for Windows Phone, but today we have the next best thing.

Developed by Rudy Huyn, the mind behind 6tag and 6sec, also very popular unofficial apps for Instagram and Vine, 6snap has been in the works for the last few weeks. Today, the app is available to all with Windows Phone 8 devices and it does not disappoint.

We’ve seen unofficial Snapchat (snapchat.com) clients come and go for Windows Phone. The popular imaging service that prides itself on photos that “expire” after a short, pre-determined viewing time is one of the few holdouts for Microsoft’s platform.  There was talk of an official client coming to Windows Phone, but complications related to API requirements i.e. disabling screen capturing, has reportedly put the project on hold.

Two popular Windows Phone developers, Den Delimarsky (Beem, Beem Sky.FM, EnTrance) and Rudy Huyn (6tag, 6sec, Wikipedia) are both racing to create the ultimate unofficial Snapchat app for Windows Phone.

Presently, Delimarsky’s ‘Snapback’ client is the most advanced in development, being at beta version 1.16, with daily updates. The app is currently in closed-beta, meaning it is invite-only and it will probably be another week or two before it is submitted to the Windows Phone store. It’s not clear if the app will pass, or if it does pass, whether the Snapchat company will allow a clone app to remain available.

According to Den, the goal of Snapback is to reach “feature parity” with the iOS and Android versions and so far, it’s coming along effortlessly. As can be seen from the above images, the app features various sections, including

• Snaps – Received + Sent
• Friends – Add, find and view current contacts
• Rear + Front facing camera support with toggle
• Video mode
• Default snap time setting
• Flash control

What’s currently missing are Toast /Live Tile notifications and a Lens, though we’re betting those features will be stacked on before release when Delimarsky is ready. The app so far has been receiving regular updates and Delimarsky is certainly a competent developer, resulting in a great looking app.

Will Huyn be able to outdo Delimarsky? To be honest, it doesn’t matter. Both will release gorgeous apps for the Windows Phone platform, giving users yet another method to participate in the latest social fad. We’re excited to see what comes next.

Just over one week ago, we received word that Swapchat, the first fully functional app that can access Snapchat on Windows Phone was being pulled. The reason was due to a copyright complaint from the Snapchat makers, who legally exercised their right to protect their content.

That was an unfortunate blow to Windows Phone users who were enjoying the service and it was very different from the ‘turn the other cheek’ approach of Instagram and Instance.

Now we can we verify that Swapchat Free (but not the paid version) is back in the Store and can be downloaded to your Windows Phone 7.x or 8 device.

We haven’t spoken to the developers behind Swapchat, SRC Apps, but our hunch may be that the Snapchat folks took issue with the paid version, aka charging people to use the service (the app is free on other platforms). Though that’s just speculation on our part.

Either way, if you missed the app or recently switched devices, then you’ll want to grab Swapchat while you can, just in case it goes missing again. It is still the same version 1.3 released a few weeks ago.

We were expecting an official app from Snapchat on Windows Phone later this month, but so far any more information on that release has gone cold. We’ll keep you posted if we hear more.

Well this is certainly a real bummer, folks. Swapchat, the popular unofficial Snapchat app for Windows Phone, has been pulled due to a copyright complaint filed by Snapchat. While there's the potential good news of an official client on the way for Microsoft's platform, until that day comes consumers are going to be stuck with no third party alternative.

If you still have Swapchat installed, it's reported that all is okay and you can continue using the service as normal. If you haven't, you're going to have to wait for an official Snapchat app to be released. We'll keep you all in the loop with what's happening in the realm of Snapchat, but if tweets published by the SRC Apps team are to be taken seriously, we won't have to wait long.

Swapchat, if you're not familiar with the name, is an unofficial Snapchat client for Windows Phone. We previously looked at the app when it was released on the Windows Phone Store, joined by a free version. The developer published version 1.2 to the store, which addressed numerous minor bugs and fixed some problems, but today we've got version 1.3.

So what's new in this latest release? Well, quite a lot actually. We're not looking at mere bug fixes and minor improvements. The developer has updated the app to use the v5 "Banquo" Snapchat API, implemented more Windows Phone 8 support and added numerous new features and functionality. If you've not tried this Windows Phone client yet, we strongly urge you togive it a go.

Here's a rundown of what's included in 1.3:

• Updated API to Snapchat v5 "Banquo" (should be faster and more reliable)
• Added WP8-native version
• Added toast notifications for new messages
• Added lock screen support (WP8 only)
• Fixed Live Tile support
• Improved friends management with a dedicated interface
• Added ability to view a friend's best friends and score
• Added recent friends on sending page
• Tap-to-focus on viewfinder
• Front-facing camera is now used by default (if available)
• Added support for emoji on the caption (WP8 only)
• Reduced text size to better match Snapchat's captions
• Added ability to reset password when login fails
• Fixed time setting not remembered between app launches
• Fixed faulty time zone conversions
• Fixed camera crashes when using hardware buttons
• Other minor improvements and bug fixes

SwapChat is an unofficial Snapchat client for our Windows Phone. There's already a paid version of SwapChat and now we can add a free version to the mix.

The free version is ad-supported and has most of the features the paid version has. You can take pictures, add captions, set a viewing time and send it to your friends. You also can view your friend's photos and see when they open your messages.

If you're not familiar with Snapchat it is a service that enables users on multiple platforms (iOS, Android and Windows Phone) to share photos in a rather addictive way. It essentially enables one to set how long images that are sent to other mobile phones will be available and displayed.  Photos are only viewable for a set amount of time.

The free version will get updates but only after the paid version. SwapChat free is available for both Windows Phone 7.x and 8 devices. You can find SwapChat Free here in the Windows Phone Store.

We've previously looked at Swapchat, an unofficial Snapchat client for Windows Phone, which has been in beta testing for some time now. Much like Instagram, until an official offering is presently available, developers will look to capitalise on the absence with an app of their own. While we're heard from multiple sources that an official Snapchat app is on its way, it's good to see third-party alternatives for consumers to enjoy. 

If you're not familiar with the name, Snapchat is a service that enables users on multiple platforms to share photos in a rather addictive way. It essentially enables one to set how long images that are sent to other mobile phones will be available and displayed. Of course, the system isn't fool-proof and this doesn't mean images you send can't be kept somehow, so be warned!

Swapchat does sport nearly all the features offered by official Snapchat clients on other platforms. This includes the ability to take photos, add captions, set viewing times and fire it off in to The Matrix. Not only photos, but videos can be received and opened to check out what friends and family have been up to.

Since this is an unofficial (but good looking) client for Windows Phone and not supported by Snapchat, we could experience issues that have plagued other developers who have attempted to work around API restrictions. It's a brilliant start and those who are fans of the photo-sharing service will welcome such a client to the Windows Phone Store. We've been informed by the developer that an update is already in the works too, which will add yet more features. Exciting times ahead.

Although we know third-party apps like Swapchat and ChatSnap are coming to Windows Phone, for those of you who want Snapchat really bad, it looks like an app called ‘Snapchat (Unofficial)’ has beat everyone to the punch.

The app is available for Windows Phone 8 users only and indeed, we were able to login and send ‘Snaps to be people and have them received. The app is also free, meaning besides the potential security risk (we don’t know the developer), there doesn’t seem like much to lose.

For those who don't know by now, Snapchat (www.snapchat.com) is a service popular on the iPhone and Android that allows users to send "expiring" photos to other users--either friends or strangers. Gimmicky is a word that comes to mind, 'sexting' is another.

While we've been able to integrate fad apps like Instagram into our lives, Snapchat still seems silly to us, but we know there are many of you who want this for social reasons. So here you go!

Of course with an app being free and so rushed, we can say this is not a very polished app. That is the UI is rather bland (though at least it’s Modern looking) and there doesn’t seem to be many features on board, like push notifications—meaning you have to manually check for new ‘Snaps.

You can add text to photos, in theory, but the keyboard doesn’t pop up to allow us to enter info. Other users have complained of exception errors when they try to login as well.

Regardless, “First!” is first and Snapchat (Unofficial) is just that. While it may not be the prettiest or most polished version, it technically works. Kind of.

We told you on Friday about Swapchat, the new unofficial Snapchat that is due within the next week or so for Windows Phone 7.x and 8. That app currently allows photos (but not yet videos) to be posted directly to Snapchat and you can even screenshot at will.

We also told you about another developer who was working on an unofficial app for the popular message-expiring service. That developer is none other than Daniel Gary, the man behind Instance (formerly, Itsdagram), the first fully featured Instagram client for Windows Phone.

ChatSnap has now entered private beta (so please don't ask for a Store link) and it too is expected in the near future to the Windows Phone Store. Currently, it only supports photo uploads but video clips we are told are on the way, in addition to a “Find friends” feature.

Right now on first beta, the app is a bit sparse, but it’s also very “Modern UI” with the familiar Inbox – Sent – Friends  layout, quick access to the camera (front and rear) and Settings.

We’ll keep you posted about the status of both Swapchat and now ChatSnap as they become available. Of course an official Snapchat app is also expected to launch in the near future as well, but we have a feeling these unofficial ones will be quite compelling on their own.

After getting our unofficial Instagram app for Windows Phone, people’s eyes turned the next big thing in social media: Snapchat (www.snapchat.com). For those who don’t know (and who are over 25), Snapchat is a new messaging service that’s super popular on iOS and Android.

It’s trick? Photos you send auto-delete themselves after a set amount of seconds.  And yes, it’s coming to Windows Phone--unofficially and officially.

Quick back story

Much like Instagram, Snapchat relies on private APIs that controlled by the developers of the service. In theory, they could open it up to third-party developers, but like Instagram they want to control the experience. Part of that experience is disabling screen-captures of expiring photos—after all, that defeats the whole purpose. Indeed on iOS and Android, if you screen-cap the pic, it will tell the other person that you did.

While iOS and Android both have official clients, Windows Phone is on the sidelines, again. But that's all about to change.

The Unofficial Version(s)

First look: Swapchat for Windows Phone

We can tell you definitively that there are currently two groups of developers working on Snapchat for Windows Phone. How? Like Instagram, APIs can be cracked and it’s not exactly too hard to do so for such a simple service.

One of those in development is Swapchat, made by two developers under SRC Apps. The app is in private beta now and it works, basically, as advertised. You can register, add contacts and yes, send photos (if the other party is on iOS and Android, it will notify you that they screen cap’d the image, but not vice versa). Notifications don't yet work, but we'll chalk that up to being a beta.

We won’t review the app now for obvious reasons but in short, we’re impressed with it. It’s sharp, fast and Modern UI fans will love it. In other words, it has huge potential and it is the real deal.

The second project we can’t reveal too much about since the developer has not yet gone public. Though when they do, you’ll be familiar with the high-profile indie developer as he/she has been in our news a lot, lately. Needless to say, we'll give you the first look as soon as we can.

So that’s currently what we know. There are at least two indie Snapchat projects going on with and ETA within in the coming weeks. Which will be better? We're excited to find out.

The Official Version (aka now for the big guns)

We’ve heard from various sources that an official Snapchat app is due to land on Windows Phone around mid to late July, to coincide with another high-profile Nokia announcement (think of a certain phone we’ve talked about today).

We’re not sure if this will be a Nokia-exclusive or another case of Nokia working with the developers behind Snapchat to best optimize it, much like WhatsApp and Foursquare, but we’re told that this is a “10” on the scale of accuracy. Though we still need to give it a "9" on our rum'o'meter since we haven't seen it ourselves yet:

The revelation that Snapchat is coming probably shouldn’t be too much of a surprise as the company themselves confirmed two-months ago that they were meeting with Microsoft to make sure that Redmond  “can support our vision”.

It now appears that things worked out with the app is nearing completion. And if not? Windows Phone users will still have unofficial, highly polished versions available shortly.
