Microsoft has a growing library of apps and services, many of which are lesser known to general users. There's a good chance you already have access to the app I'll focus on today, Clipchamp. 

The video editing app is the default video editor on Windows 11, and it's also available on the web. Recently, I used the app to create a highlight reel for my American football team, and several people asked me about what I used to make the video. While at first glance it may appear that I learned how to create my own graphics, I actually just used a template from Clipchamp and some basic filters to customize its look.

What is Clipchamp?

Clipchamp is a free video editor that's available on Windows 11 and on the web. Listing those separately is a bit of a technicality, since Clipchamp is a web-based video editor, regardless of if you use Microsoft's app for it or use Clipchamp online. There's even an iOS version of Clipchamp, but I have an Android phone, so I can't say how good or bad the app is.

In comparison to video editing apps like Adobe Premiere Pro or Da Vinci Resolve, Clipchamp is much more basic. It feels more like a feature-rich smartphone or tablet video editor scaled up to a larger screen, rather than a full-fledged competitor to professional apps. That's on purpose, however, as the aim of Clipchamp is to have a low learning curve and make creating videos easy.

"Create videos with a few clicks in Clipchamp, the easy video editor by Microsoft," reads the app's description on the Microsoft Store. "This video maker is beginner-friendly with a drag-and-drop interface but has advanced video editing features to help you cut, crop and resize videos, record screen and webcam, edit green screen videos and even add AI voiceovers. Make engaging videos for social media, sales promo videos, in-depth tutorials, and more with Clipchamp."

While Clipchamp is easy to use, it has more features than you may expect. Templates, filters, effects, and the fact that it has a multi-layered timeline make it possible to use the app for more complex edits.

Clipchamp also has a royalty-free asset library that can be used to make videos pop. A few moving graphics can really make a video look more polished.

I don't pay for Clipchamp Premium, so the tools I used to make the video below are free. If you'd like more features, you can pay $9.99 per month to be able to export in 4K, gain access to premium assets, and gain a handful of other perks.

I confess that Microsoft doesn't exactly keep Clipchamp a secret as the headline suggests, but in practice very few people seem to know about Clipchamp. When I told my friends that I used Clipchamp, none of them said they knew the app was already installed on their Windows 11 PC.

Making videos with Clipchamp

After I posted the video above, several people reached out to me asking about how I made the video. The graphics seem to be the biggest hit. Clipchamp has quite a few templates, but there are only a few aimed at sports teams or highlights. The template I used originally had a blue accent and theme, but I was able to use filters to customize it.

I'm not a professional video editor, but I studied broadcast journalism and have used Adobe Premiere Pro and Da Vinci Resolve for years. I'd put myself at a "prosumer" level, which means most people with a bit of time and experience could make similar videos. What I like about Clipchamp is that it has a simple enough interface that just about anyone could drag and drop a few clips in, but more experienced creators can make videos their own.

Room for improvement

While I like Clipchamp, there are some small additions that would go a long way. I'd love to see the option to pick a specific segment of a clip to replace a piece of content on the timeline. Right now, if you drag a video to replace an item on your project's timeline, that clip you drag in starts from the beginning. 

When using a template, it's normal to want to fit the best part of a clip into a specific window of time, and that doesn't always line up with the exact length of your source video. I'd also like the ability to add a transition to the start or end of a clip that's not directly next to another item on the timeline. I suppose in that instance it's not as much of a transition as it is an effect, but it'd still be nice.

Overall, Clipchamp has gotten better since it came under Microsoft's domain (Microsoft bought Clipchamp in 2021). I hope the tech giant continues to invest into the video editor.

Previously only available on ARM-powered Apple macOS devices, one of the best free video editors, DaVinci Resolve, is coming to more supported devices, including future Windows laptops. The announcement comes as part of the ongoing Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii alongside jaw-dropping claims made by the CPU manufacturer about the promised performance of its Oryon processors over its primary competitors, including Apple and Intel.

Dave Lebolt of Blackmagic Design, developers of DaVinci Resolve, took to the stage at the Summit to explain their plans for ARM-supported devices, reportedly running the app 1.7x faster than Intel's 12 core CPUs and 3x faster when using an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) in testing.

Why is DaVinci Resolve such a big deal?

DaVinci Resolve offers a broad range of post-processing tools for creative video editors, though it is primarily famous for its color correction. Combining clip editing with high-quality visual effects and various motion graphic tools alongside audio editing means users can focus on learning a single piece of software rather than an entire creative suite. It's an attractive prospect compared to Adobe's Creative Suite, which splits specific post-processing tools into separate apps like Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro.

Budding Hollywood editors-in-training could essentially pick up an ARM-powered Windows laptop and exclusively use DaVinci Resolve to cut their footage, apply video effects, and balance their audio within the same app from anywhere. If laptop OEMs can beat out some of Apple's most popular MacBook laptops regarding pricing, this could see a gigantic shift in choice for students and proven professionals. DaVinci Resolve is a free app with premium features like rendering 32K footage at 120 FPS over multiple GPUs locked behind the paid DaVinci Resolve Studio alternative.

Creating engaging video content takes creativity, passion, and a lot of work. But with how prevalent video content is today, it’s no surprise to see people from all industries creating meaningful video content.

When Microsoft acquired Clipchamp, I was immediately intrigued by the video editing app. Microsoft's first-party video editing options aren't great on Windows 10, so I was eager to try an alternative. Clipchamp is a web-based video editor that allows you to navigate through a multi-layer video editing timeline within your browser. The actual processing power to edit your videos comes from your PC, but the interface is based on the web.

I spent a week learning the interface of Clipchamp, playing around with features, and creating the highlight reel for an American football team that I coach. I tried out the free version of Clipchamp for a couple of days before Clipchamp set me up with a trial of its Business Platinum plan.

I would describe myself as an intermediate video editor. I've edited videos for work, but the majority of my edits are light on graphics or more advanced features. The majority of my edits have been news pieces or highlight reels, so what you see below is about the average complexity of my work. For my workflow, Clipchamp held up well. The app shows a lot of promise.

Microsoft increased the free tier of Clipchamp to include 1080p exports in March 2022. The requirement to pay a monthly subscription to export in 1080p was the biggest drawback of Clipchamp, making the spec bump for the free tier a welcome change. We've updated this review to reflect the fact that Clipchamp's free plan now supports 1080p exports.

Clipchamp: Price and availability

Clipchamp is a browser-based video editor. It still uses your PC's resources to process videos, but the interface is entirely online. It works with Google Chrome and the version of Microsoft Edge that's based on Chromium. Clipchamp does not work with Mozilla Firefox.

There are four different plans for Clipchamp. The Basic plan is free. It was previously limited to 480p exports, which drew quite a bit of criticism. That has since changed as the free plan for Clipchamp can export 1080p videos. The Creator plan costs $9 per month. It integrates with cloud storage services like OneDrive, Dropbox, and Google Drive. The Creator plan used to be capped at 720p but has been bumped up to 1080p.

The Business plan ($19/month) used to be required for FHD exports, but since the free and creator plans now support exporting in 1080p, the Business plan won't be necessary for many. The Business plan allows you to set up a brand kit for your content and comes with unlimited stock audio. The Business Platinum plan is even pricier at $39 per month. It comes with everything in the lower plans and adds a video stock library. It's difficult to imagine a customer who should spend almost $39 per month on Clipchamp, but the option is there.

Clipchamp: What you'll like

Clipchamp has a small learning curve, so people should be able to jump right into editing. While it can be used for more advanced multi-layer video projects, you could also just clip together a few gaming highlights and call it a day. Clipchamp has a simple drag-and-drop interface that extends throughout the entire app.

The free version of Clipchamp is a bit limited, but I found the full library of features to be impressive. It's not going to replace Adobe Premiere Pro, but I don't think it's meant to. Clipchamp is complex enough to make a professional business video, which I think is more of its aim. It supports screen recordings, green screens, and video capture, all of which fit right at home in a corporate space. Two of the paid plans have business in their name, and it's easy to see why.

You can add video and audio to Clipchamp from your PC or add footage from cloud storage providers like OneDrive or Dropbox. The video editor also integrates with stock audio, stock images, and even Giphy. I had some fun playing around with GIFs, including a dancing banana that appears briefly in my team's highlight reel. Clipchamp makes it easy to add content from all over the web and your PC.

The stock libraries in the Business and Business Platinum plans are great additions for creators in the workplace. I found it easy to find graphics, sounds, and videos to enhance my video. My example above is light-hearted, but there's no shortage of content for more professional presentations and videos.

Clipchamp's highest plan includes support for a brand kit. This lets you add a color palette to make sure your content looks consistent from video to video.

A new feature called Clipchamp Teams is available in beta. It allows you to collaborate on videos. This will fit right in with Microsoft's other services, and I wouldn't be shocked if it was a big reason Microsoft looked into Clipchamp.

Clipchamp: What you won't like

Clipchamp's biggest drawback used to be its price. Frankly, only offering 480p exports as part of the basic plan was a joke and not a funny one. Luckily, that's changed. The pricing tiers now make much more sense, but you'll still have to pay to get Clipchamp's best features. When you pay for a plan, you're mostly paying for stock libraries. $39 is a lot to ask for per month for a brand kit and stock audio, video, and images.

I ran into several syncing issues during my video editing. Syncing files across devices led to some errors while Clipchamp tried to locate files. Several times when I moved a clip and then tried to play it back on my timeline, Clipchamp would show the wrong part of my clip. This could be hardware-related, but I ran into the same issue on two different PCs.

I was surprised to see that Clipchamp doesn't work with Mozilla Firefox. I use Edge, but I'd prefer to see the editor have a wider range of support. I'm not saying Clipchamp should add legacy support for Internet Explorer, but Firefox and Safari should be supported. Clipchamp also only has an app for iOS at this time, which is disappointing.

I don't know whether the following is a knock on Clipchamp or more just a wish list item now that it's owned by Microsoft, but I'd love to see some of the processing within the video editor take place in the cloud. With Windows 365 and Xbox Cloud Gaming gaining popularity, it'd be incredible to use similar tech for collaborative video editing. Perhaps in the future, Microsoft will let people connect with a powerful server to handle demanding video editing from less powerful PCs.

Clipchamp: Alternatives

There's no shortage of video editors on Windows, though Clipchamp has some unique aspects compared to the competition. If you're looking for a free video editor, OpenShot is probably your best bet. It's an open-source video editor with a long feature list. It has a bit of a learning curve but is just an incredible value.

On the paid side of things, Adobe Premiere Pro is the best overall video editing app and the industry standard for a reason. It might seem unfair to compare Clipchamp to Premiere Pro since they're targeted at different audiences, but the two video editors are within the same price range if you're looking at Clipchamp's paid plans. The Business Platinum plan of Clipchamp is more than an Adobe Premiere Pro subscription. If you need the power of Premiere Pro, it's probably a better option.

Clipchamp: Should you get it?

Clipchamp is a solid video editor for creators and business professionals who need to make videos. It's basic enough to jump straight into but has enough features to make more complex videos. Its integrations with cloud services, stock libraries, and graphics options make it easy to bring in the content you want for your videos.

If you're looking to stitch together clips or make a professional video presentation, Clipchamp's features should meet your needs. Beta support for collaborative video editing is exciting, but generally, you should judge apps based on what they do now, not what they could do in the future.

Clipchamp isn't going to stand up against Premiere Pro or other high-end video editors, but that's OK. I think Clipchamp is easier to jump into than more powerful alternatives. I'd say that it's a video editor that doesn't require you to be a video editor.

Clipchamp: The bottom line

Clipchamp is a good idea that already delivers a solid video editing experience. It's already ahead of video editing in Microsoft's Photos app. Microsoft appears to agree with me as Clipchamp is now an inbox app in Insider builds of Windows 11.

During my review, I ran into some syncing issues, and Clipchamp struggled to find files a couple of times, but throughout a week of video editing, I'd say the issues were infrequent.

Ultimately, I think Clipchamp will benefit from being acquired by Microsoft. I hope that Microsoft integrates some of its cloud processing tech to allow Clipchamp to handle some video processing through the cloud. This would open doors for video editing on less powerful hardware.

Adobe Premiere Pro is an excellent video editor and one of the best Windows apps but can get pricey due to its monthly subscription. However, you can save big on Adobe Premiere Pro if you're a student or teacher. Here's how to make sure you get your savings.

Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe makes it easy to sign up for a subscription as a student or teacher, especially if you have an education email. The only equipment you need is a web browser and your personal and banking details.

The student or teacher discount for Adobe brings the price of the entire Adobe Creative Suite down to $20 per month for the first year. After a year, that price bumps up to $30 per month every year. If you aren't a student or teacher, or if you don't take advantage of the deal, just Adobe Premiere Pro costs $21 per month. That price difference isn't substantial when dealing with only one app, but the student or teacher deal gets you the full suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.

If you subscribe to the entire Adobe Creative Suite and aren't a student or teacher, it costs $53 per month. That means over your first year, you'd save almost $400. Even after the price jumps in your second year of the plan, you'd still save over $275 per year.

Adobe Premiere Pro allows you to create complex, multi-layered video edits. You can also use it for basic to intermediate audio edits. It's a great software to use to take your videos from start to finish.

XPS 15 has the right hardware to tackle video editing

Video editing is CPU intensive, and the XPS 15 9500 is up to the task. It has up to a 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10875H CPU with eight cores and a clock speed up to 5.1GHz, which is plenty of power. You can tone things down a bit and save some money with a more standard Intel Core i7-10750H, which still delivers six cores and a clock speed up to 5.0GHz.

Helping out the CPU is up to 64GB of DDR4-2933MHz RAM in a dual-stick configuration, which is plenty for most video editing software. You can also configure with 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB of RAM. Note that the RAM can be upgraded at home later down the road.

The NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q GPU contained within most XPS 15 9500 models is suitable for video editing, but it can be considered at the lower end of what you might want from a GPU. It won't match, say, the higher-end options in the RTX NVIDIA lineup for memory, bus rate, or bandwidth, but it can certainly get the job done.

Dell doesn't offer any other dedicated GPU options — you can forego something dedicated and stick with integrated Intel UHD Graphics — but the addition of a Thunderbolt 3 port with four lanes of PCIe means you can connect an external GPU (eGPU) if you need that extra power.

Finally, storage also plays a vital role in video editing, as you'll often be dealing with large file sizes. Here, you can get up to a 2TB M.2 PCIe solid-state drive (SSD) that will perform well, but you can always save some money at the checkout by choosing lesser storage and upgrading on your own later on.

XPS 15 has the right ports for connecting devices

Moving data in and out of your PC is essential, especially when working with a videographer's tools, so having the right ports is essential. Despite its slim size, the XPS 15 holds onto a good variety, including two Thunderbolt 3, once USB-C 3.1, and 3.5mm audio jack. There's also a UHS-II SD card reader for quick data transfer between devices. A USB-C to USB-A adapter comes included.

That Thunderbolt 3 port can be used with an eGPU for extra power, but it can also handily hook up to a Thunderbolt 3 docking station for increased connectivity.

XPS 15 has an optional 4K display

Internal hardware is essential when choosing a laptop for video editing, but so is the display. Color reproduction, resolution, and size are all critical factors to take into account. The XPS 15 9500's IGZO display has been upped to a boxier 16:10 aspect ratio for more screen real estate, and it comes in 1920x1200 (FHD+) or 3840x2400 (UHD+) resolutions.

If you're editing 4K video, the high-res touch choice sells itself. It hits 100% AdobeRGB and 94% DCI-P3 color reproduction and manages up to 500 nits brightness. It also offers DisplayHDR 400 and a 1650:1 contrast ratio. If you want to save some money and extend battery life, the non-touch FHD option likewise has excellent color reproduction and 500 nits brightness.

As for size, the XPS 15's display is 15.6 inches. You'll likely need an external monitor ready for when you seriously need to get down to business, but on the go, this is not the wrong size at all for editing.

Video editing doesn't require a superpowered PC or an expensive suite of software. There are plenty of free options that can handle everything from basic editing to multi-layered creation. Icecream Video Editor is a new video editor from Icecream Apps. It's simple and easy to use but has enough features that some users wouldn't miss other editors. It's not a professional video editor, but it's a step or two above many free editing applications.

Icecream Video Editor supports trimming video and audio clips, inserting transitions, managing multiple projects, and adding effects. Unfortunately, it could use some polishing and bug removal. In my testing, I ran into some issues that prevent it from being a go-to for video editors on a budget.

What you'll love about Icecream Video Editor?

Icecream Video Editor is incredibly easy to use. You can drag and drop video and audio into the app's media library and then drag it into the video timeline. Adding transitions is as easy as clicking a plus button and trimming audio, and video is similar to the simple dragging functionality you see on smartphone video editors. There's almost no learning curve, in my opinion. That's a big plus for a video editor. If you throw someone with no experience into a multi-layered video editor with a complex interface, they might not even try it. Icecream Video Editor is welcoming enough that you could teach it to someone who wants to make some basic videos. I also found Icecream Video Editor's project management to be refreshingly simple. You can quickly jump between projects and stay organized.

You can crop videos, trim audio clips and videos, and add effects with only a few clicks. These actions are possible on more powerful video editors of course, but sometimes users can drown in a sea of options. Those options are essential for some types of professional videos, but you shouldn't have to watch a YouTube video to know how to add basic effects. If you want to put together a highlight reel of your kid's baseball season or put together a video from a recent vacation, the simple interface of Icecream Video Editor is your friend. It has enough features to enhance videos, such as support for filters, effects, and titles, but doesn't have the more powerful and nuanced characteristics of higher-end video editors.

What will frustrate you about Icecream Video Editor?

I'm okay with a free video editor not having multiple layers for editing. But if you're going to have a simple interface, it should work well 100 percent of the time and look good when in use. I ran into several issues while editing a video in Icecream Video Editor. The preview window of clips and my main video often showed my video wrong. It would shrink a video to about one-fourth of its normal size and shove it in the upper left-hand corner of a box. Clicking on it would fill the box, but you shouldn't have to do that repeatedly in an edit, or even once really.

Additionally, certain parts of the editing process just don't look great. Trimming a video clip is simple enough, but the clip appearing partly above the timeline and having a strong blur effect looks off to me. This blur could be a design choice to make it easier for someone to identify what they're editing, but it doesn't look right. It almost looks like a bug.

Should you download Icecream Video Editor?

I'm always an advocate of developers bringing more apps to Windows 10. Icecream Video Editor is new, so I'm more forgiving of some bugs and poor esthetic choices. The app has a nice set of features for a free video editor and would be worth trying if you're on a budget or a beginner when it comes to video editing.

There's also no risk in trying the app out. Maybe the bugs I saw are system-specific. If that's the case, then there aren't many negative things to say about the app. I created a highlight reel from a recent football game I played in using Icecream Video Editor, and it worked well. Importing files and exporting the finished video was smooth, and the process is something I could teach to someone who wants to create their own videos. You can always try it and then go back to another editor if it doesn't meet your needs.

More than a decade of development

Adobe has been working on Premiere Pro since 2003. More than 15 years of development has allowed the company to shape the software package into what we know today, and it really is something else. Not only does Premiere Pro allow for some fantastic video edits, there's also the possibility to work with music and other tracks.

Its immense UI can be intimidating for some because there's so much you can do, but once you get the hang of things, you can do just about anything from simple cuts to graphics formatting. Newer versions of Premiere Pro also allow you to edit video and audio for virtual reality and 360-degree footage. It's so powerful that if you think it, you can probably do it (with the right skills, of course).

It's also great for collaborative projects. Premiere Pro allows you to have multiple projects open at once, while simultaneously working on a project with others. A massive library of formats is supported too. Go from working with your smartphone all the way up to 8K without issue.

Everything you need and more

Whether you're a designer, YouTuber, videographer, or someone at home wanting to make it big in the biz, Adobe Premiere is the best tool available. And if you're working with other Adobe apps like Photoshop and After Effects, it's a seamless experience to switch between them.

Unlike single purchase software that requires you to part with more cash with major upgrades, Adobe charges a subscription for Premiere Pro and other software the company offers. This means you'll always be rocking the absolute latest version of Premiere Pro if you have an active internet connection, along with support.

Purchasing a subscription for a single app like Premiere Pro starts at $21/month and goes up from there. If you want access to over 20 Adobe apps, you'll pay $53/month. If it's a little too much

Should you not require everything Adobe Premiere Pro offers for the price, you could scrap the monthly subscription by opting for Adobe Premiere Elements 2019 instead. This is a more basic video editor that requires but a single fee to unlock access to the suite.

Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements 2019 are fantastic video editing suites from Adobe. Regardless of which one you choose, you'll be able to create awesome-looking videos in no time at all. However, they're for entirely different customers with different budgets.

Likewise, certain offerings just won't be enough for those who need certain format support and advanced functionality. Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements 2019 are similar in numerous ways, but differ in who Adobe is targeting.

Premiere Pro is the flagship in video editing, relied on by many professionals and enthusiasts. Not only does it offer all the features required by more advanced users, but the software suite also works well for amateurs looking to make it big in the business or produce some short films for YouTube.

If you've yet to select which version of Adobe Premiere you need, think about how you're planning to use the software. If you need to do multiple videos per week and plan to accomplish some fairly intensive tasks, go with Premiere Pro, which will be able to keep up with everything you throw at it. Premiere Elements 2019 is better suited to those who are new to the video editing game or don't need all the magical features.

How powerful is Premiere Elements?

Premiere Elements is a very capable video editing suite that can handle even some more demanding projects. It's no Premiere Pro, though, and as such it doesn't offer some of the more advanced features you would get in the premium package. But you're not technically missing out on anything if you only need to cut and paste some video files together.

It's easy to spot the differences in performance by the required Windows 10 specifications alone. Premiere Elements 2019 can get by with an older dual-core processor and just 4GB of RAM. Premiere Pro requires at least 8GB of RAM (16GB is recommended for smoother performance) and a multi-core processor.

There's also the fact of file support, which can affect what you can import and export into Elements. Premiere Pro supports pretty much everything you could use with the software, so if you rely on more professional hardware for capturing footage, you may need to avoid Elements.

Comparing Adobe Premiere Elements 2019 against Premiere Pro, you'll be missing out on some major formats — depending on your equipment and established process — including 3GP, 3G2, AAC, AIFF, AIF, Apple ProRes, ASF, ASND, AVC-Intra, BWF, CRM, HEVC, M2T, M2TS, M2V, M4A, MV4, MXF, OMF, OpenEXR, R3D, Rush, VOB, and WAV.

When is Premiere Pro too much?

Adobe's more pricey video editing suite has everything you'll likely need from such a software package. Whether you're throwing together an amateur short film, some clips from a recent holiday, creating a future-length movie, or some version of all of these things, it's all possible with the tools available in Premiere Pro.

Advanced features included with Premiere Pro that may be a little too much for the average user include the ability to have simultaneous projects open and share them, VR editing, advanced effects and transitions, closed captions, libraries, direct publishing, lumetri color adjustments, and Microsoft Teams integration to name but a few.

Of course, you'll have to pay for a monthly or annual subscription. This is where Premiere Elements is a better option if you feel as though you won't use the Pro version enough to justify the price. For professionals, however, it's absolutely worth the upgrade price if you need the extra features, and pros who invest in the high-end suite won't likely regret the decision. Pros who try to get by with the cheaper version might regret that choice over time, though.

Can you buy Premiere Pro on Amazon?

It's possible to find some listings for Adobe Premiere Pro and Creative Cloud in the form of yearly subscription packages, which result in you needing to activate a redemption code with Adobe. Thing is, Adobe allows you to pay for its Creative Cloud subscription service on its own website. All you need to do is create an account and enter some card details.

It's easy to get a lot done in front of a desktop PC, especially when it comes to video editing. Movie Maker 8.1 is a well-received video editor app for Windows Phone 8.1. It’s also the first one in its category, being made by Venetasoft, and the app has been receiving a steady stream of updates, including two in the last 24 hours. One of those updates brought with it a lot of new features that users have been demanding, including those transition effects.

Movie Maker 8.1 (1.1.5.0/1.1.5.2)

• Titles – the user can add beautiful titles choosing the font type, size and color, and the background (from a solid color, an image from his phone library or a frame extracted from the movie)
• Transitions – six types of transition (others will come shortly), including four 2D transitions (fade in/out/cross, slide, stripe) and two 3D transitions (Twirp3D, Fold3d)
• Ken Burns Effect (Pan & Zoom) effect to apply on any image/title/still frame.

MovieJax is a new video editor for Windows Phone that we mentioned the other day. It joins Movie Maker 8.1 and Movie Moments in this new category of apps for Windows Phone. We have spent some time with MovieJax and think a lot of you are going to like it. Head past the break to watch our hands on video.

The user interface is pretty straightforward. If you’ve edited videos before on a desktop, you’re going to understand how to use MovieJax right away. There’s a help button on the right if things are still unclear.

To get started, just click the “new project’ button on the right. By default, a 5 second title screen is inserted for you. You can type your title here, or remove it if you like. You can also change the background color and length.

Tap the plus sign to add video, photo, or text. You can choose from your existing library, or capture new video from within the app. The built-in camera has options that remind us of Nokia Camera. You can change the video size and white balance.

When you’ve added clips, you can also trim by dragging the starting and end points. The timer below the clip shows the new duration. Most people are impatient, so keep each of your clips shorter than 30 seconds.

Below the timeline, you can add music. This appears to be editable as well, giving you an option to trim and create loops. However, MovieJax crashes whenever we try to edit the music. We hope this gets fixed in an update.

When you’re done editing, click the preview button to see if you’re happy with the results. If you’re satisfied, click the publish button. Under the settings, you can choose where to save the video and its output quality.

Windows Phone 8.1 came out through the Preview for Developer program last month. Since then we’ve slowly seen apps trickle into the Windows Phone Store that take advantage of some unique features introduced in Windows Phone 8.1. Video editing wasn’t possible on Windows Phone until last month and now we’ve already covered two new apps to address the market. Movie Maker 8.1 was the first third-party app to edit videos and Movie Moments came to us from Microsoft. Today we’re getting a brand new video editing app that you need to download.

Welcome MovieJax to Windows Phone 8.1.

MovieJax comes to us from some Marker Metro (markermetro.com), a Windows Phone and Windows 8 development studio from New Zealand that has made some of our favorite apps. You know them from making apps like AlphaJax, NZ Herald, Air New Zealand mPass, RWC 2011, Wheel of Fortune, 7digital, Yellow NZ and more for both Windows Phone and Windows 8.

We’ve been looking forward to video editing apps coming to Windows Phone for a long time. The release of Windows Phone 8.1 allows developers to build such apps, which is why just two days ago Movie Maker 8.1 was the first video editing app to come to the platform. Today Microsoft is releasing their own video editing app called Movie Moments.

Head into the Windows Phone Store and you’ll find Movie Moments for Windows Phone 8.1. It’s a new video editing app from Microsoft that we’ve already since on Windows 8.1. You’ll find that the Windows Phone version of Movie Moments shares a lot of features from the Windows 8.1 version. That’s because it’s a universal Windows app. Here are those features you can look forward too:

• Pick your favorite 60 seconds. You can trim from the beginning, middle, or end.
• Highlight your favorite moments with fun, colorful captions in a range of styles.
• Add music that matches the moment. We’ve included a few songs for different moods, or you can use songs from your collection.
• When your movie is exactly how you want it, share it with family and friends right from the app.

You’re not going to be making the next indie movie that wins awards at Sundance with Movie Moments. Instead you will be making great 60-second clips that you can easily share through OneDrive or Facebook.

Late last night, a new app named ‘Movie Maker 8.1’ landed on the Windows Phone Store for Windows Phone 8.1 devices running the Preview for Developers. The third-party app runs for a $1.49 with a free trial and is the first to exploit new API features in Windows Phone 8.1 that allows direct editing of videos on a user’s phone. Movie Maker 8.1 is also a universal app, meaning once you buy it you’ll be able to download and use the corresponding Windows 8.1 app too. The Windows 8.1 app is expected to hit the Store soon.

Let’s take a look at Movie Maker 8.1, and we’ll tell you how the first 100 of you can unlock the app for $0 in a special Windows Phone Central offer!

Movie Maker 8.1 is a full-featured video editing app, and even for its initial release, sports a lot of options for users. What’s more, Venetasoft (who made Instagraph, the first Instagram app for Windows Phone), has lots of plans for Movie Maker 8.1, including optimization updates and new transition features. Here’s what Movie Maker 8.1 can do today:

• Allows the user to compose a movie using all kinds of video, images and music files supported by Windows Phone 8.1

We’ve been playing with the app for some time now, and it works quite well. For instance, we quickly jumped on the ‘slow motion’ effect, which can be tuned for 1X up to 10X speeds. Needless to say, it’s a lot of fun.

The app does have a few bugs early on, including an error message about a file being “locked” and unable to be saved. However, that error does not really block anything and is more of a nuisance than anything (we’re told it’ll be fixed in the next update).

One of the many things we’re excited for in Window Phone 8.1 is that it’s going to allow developers to create video editing apps. While we were at Build 2014, one of the sessions showed off, for the first time ever, a Windows Phone app performing a video edit. Take a look after the break.

It’s easy to shoot videos with our camera phones, but your friends would not want to watch hours of footage from your vacation. Video editing apps will let you take highlights from your footage so that you can create videos that are shorter and more watchable. We’re sure many of you have been looking for video editing apps for Windows Phone. With the upcoming release of Windows Phone 8.1, it looks like developers are now able to deliver.

Perhaps this will make it easier for the official Instagram app to finally add the video upload feature that has ben missing. Hopefully, the updated version of Instagram for Windows Phone 8.1 will let us select video clips from the camera roll, trim, and rearrange to fit within 15 seconds.

The closest thing to video editing that we currently have on Windows Phone 8 is trimming. Apps like Video Trimmer and Nokia Camera let you cut off part of the beginning and ending of video clips.

There’s also Nokia Video Director, which allows you to quickly capture and transfer videos to the Nokia Lumia 2520. Unfortunately, it isn’t exactly a standalone video editing app experience and is meant to be used in conjunction with the Nokia tablet running the same app.

Nokia already has a plethora of apps available in the Nokia Collection, but the manufacturer isn't halting with what's currently available. Video Trimmer is an app we covered at the Lumia 1020 launch event, which enables consumers to conveniently shorten videos. All it takes is some magic and some sliding controls to cut down the duration to a single clip. 

The app has now arrived in the Nokia Collection, albeit hidden, though you can at least look at it. That's the good news. The bad news is no, you can't download it, so consider this a teas post for this Friday when the Lumia 1020 finally goes on sale (You can see the app in action in our video below, it's worth the watch).

Video editing has long be sought after for Windows Phone devices and Nokia heard consumers loud and clear. While the app is fairly basic at the moment, presumably Nokia could continually add to it much like their Creative Studio app. We could invision Nokia adding filters and other wizardry to Video Trimmer to make a full on video editor in the future--seems like a natural step for them, no? Indeed, the fact that it is a separate app that can be independently updated from Pro Camera tells us that Nokia has plans for it.

Back to the app itself, once you're done altering the video, the end result can be saved to the device or uploaded and shared over WiFi or mobile data connection. It's a neat little app that will go well with the new Lumia 1020.

But what about other Nokia 92x devices? They too will get video editing with a future update, as we confirmed with the company in New York. It will evidently be a part of the Amber update that also brings Pro Camera support. That update will also bring stereo-audio recording, bumping the current mono mode that we have now. Nice.

You can try to download Nokia Video Trimmer from the Windows Phone Store on a Lumia 1020, though we're betting this is a look-but-don't-touch kind of thing for everyone else. Thanks, Jackniel, for the tip!

One big complaint we’ve heard when it comes to Windows Phone is the inability to quickly edit videos on the go. There’s no way to quickly cut and edit your capture until you get home to a PC and by then, it could be too late or you don’t care any longer.

Luckily, Nokia heard your complaints too. The Nokia Pro Camera app has built in video editing, which is demonstrated in the above video. It basically allows you to trim and save the video for sharing, all while taking advantage of that super awesome on-board camera.

Best part? We’re told that the Pro Camera suite is coming to the Lumia 92x line in the future, meaning lots more of you can take advantage of these new features.
