Now, anyone running a recent version of Windows 10 can manually check for the update through Windows Update. The November 2019 Update primarily focuses on performance improvements and increasing stability, but it does have some new features to play with. Microsoft explains the rollout in a community doc.

According to the doc, anyone who wants the new update just needs to be on a recent version of Windows 10 and to manually "Check for updates" in the Windows Update section of their device's settings.

The Windows 10 November 2019 Update is different than standard semi-annual Windows 10 updates. The November 2019 Update is a collection of features and improvements built on top of Windows 10 1903 that are "disabled" until a person initiates the update to version 1909. That's the main reason why the update is so small.

While primarily an update focused on performance improvements, the November 2019 Update brings the ability for third-party digital assistants to work on the lock screen, the ability to create new events from the Calendar flyout, and some new options regarding notifications. The File Explorer's search box is now powered by Windows Search, which allows you to see online OneDrive content alongside your other content.

You can check out all the new features and changes in our hands-on with the November 2019 Update.

Microsoft states in a doc announcing the rollout that this process started now, so people have time to update their systems before they reach end of suppport,

Beginning today, we will slowly start the phased process to automatically initiate a feature update for devices running the October 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1809) Home and Pro editions, keeping those devices supported and receiving the monthly updates that are critical to device security and ecosystem health. We are starting this rollout process several months in advance of the end of service date to provide adequate time for a smooth update process.

Windows 10 November 2019 Update: What is it, and what's included?

The November 2019 Update of Windows 10 focuses largely on bug fixes and improvements.
Now that the Windows 10 November 2019 Update is out, I've seen an uptick in questions asking how this update, known as version 1909, is different from previous or future Windows 10 feature updates. Why is the feature update itself so small? Why does it install so fast? And why does Microsoft tout this update as being less risky to install? These are all excellent questions, and we have answers.

To begin, it's important to point out that Windows 10 version 1909 isn't a real feature update, not in the technical sense anyway. From a development standpoint, Windows 10 version 1909 is a collection of features that were built on top of Windows 10 version 1903, but are set to "disabled" by default until the user initiates the update to version 1909. This is why the download for version 1909 is so small, because you're not actually downloading any new features.

All of the new features that are part of version 1909 are already inside version 1903 as of the KB4517389 update released last month, but are just disabled until you install an enablement package. When the user initiates the version 1909 download, what Windows Update does is download this "enablement package" that tells your OS to turn on the new features and change the OS version to 1909.

This is Microsoft's official explanation of how it works:

Windows 10, versions 1903, and 1909 share a common core operating system with an identical set of system files. Therefore, the new features in Windows 10, version 1909 were included in the latest monthly quality update for Windows 10, version 1903 (released October 8, 2019), but are in an inactive and dormant state. These new features will remain dormant until they are turned on through the "enablement package," a small, quick-to-install "master switch" that activates the Windows 10, version 1909 features.

Unlike previous updates

Source: Windows Central (Image credit: Source: Windows Central)

This is different from previous Windows 10 feature updates, which have been entirely new OS releases. The version 1909 update is simply version 1903 but with a few additional features enabled, which is why the install process for version 1909 is so quick and less risky if you're coming from version 1903.

If you update from something earlier than version 1903, then the version 1909 update will be delivered as a full feature update just like previous releases, as you can't install an enablement package for features that aren't part of your OS. Version 1809, for example, doesn't have any of the new features that are off by default on 1903, and as such, will need to download the entire version 1903 base before the enablement package for 1909 can work.

So that's how the Windows 10 version 1909 update works. It's unclear if Microsoft is planning to do this with all the second yearly feature updates of a given year going forward, or if 1909 is a one-off type thing. We'll keep you updated on that front.

Dating back to the days of Windows Phone, Sean has long been intrigued by anything that turns the tech world on its head. If it folds, flips, or has multiple screens, Sean wants to get his hands on it.

Over the last decade, Sean covered the launches of Windows 10, Windows 11, and hundreds of devices made by Microsoft, Google, Meta, Dell, Lenovo, Razer, and many other companies. Sean was there for the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and has followed closely as AI has been integrated into everything from smartphones to making videos.Between product announcements, Sean scours through patents and studies leaks to find out what’s on the way in the world of tech.

Sean’s journey into tech kicked off with the Lumia 930, which placed him squarely in the Microsoft ecosystem. Finding third-party apps out of necessity led Sean to build relationships with app developers. Those relationships sparked a career full of app reviews and behind-the-scenes looks at development.

Outside of writing, Sean coaches American football. His team’s back-to-back northern championships in the UK were powered, in part, by Microsoft services. His team's attendance is tracked in Excel. He uses Clipchamp for his highlight videos. Even Microsoft Forms plays a role when getting player feedback.

Sean studied broadcast journalism at Nottingham Trent University before joining us in the world of online news.
If you recently installed the Windows 10 November 2019 Update, then you've probably noticed that the available space has shrunk several gigabytes. However, it's not because the update takes more space. Instead, it's because, the system creates a copy of the previous installation as a precaution, in case the device needs to rollback to its original settings as a result of errors or compatibility problems during and after the upgrade process.

Although this is a useful mechanism, Windows 10 will still keep the files inside the "Windows.old" folder taking up a lot of space, even when the upgrade completed successfully. Getting rid of these files allows you to reclaim roughly around 8GB to 12GB of storage, which it may not be significant on devices with multi-terabyte drives, but on laptops with limited storage could mean more time without thinking to upgrade the internals.

Of course, this only applies for devices upgrading from the October 2018 Update (version 1809) or older releases, as computers running the May 2019 Update will receive version 1909 as a monthly cumulative update, which doesn't require reinstallation. Therefore, the install won't take much space, and no security copy will be created. (Though, you'll be still able to undo the update like with any quality update.)

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to delete the leftover files wasting valuable space after upgrading to version 1909 using the Settings app as well as with the legacy Disk Cleanup tool.

How to free up space after November In all, five features are no longer being actively developed, while two features have been removed.

Here's a look, from Microsoft's support documents, what is no longer being developed or is removed (via Neowin).

Features removed in Windows 10 1909

PNRP APIs: The Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRP) cloud service was removed in Windows 10, version 1809. We are planning to complete the removal process by removing the corresponding APIs.

Taskbar settings roaming: Roaming of taskbar settings is removed in this release. This feature was announced as no longer being developed in Windows 10, version 1903.

Features no longer being developed in Windows 10 1909

Hyper-V vSwitch on LBFO: In a future release, the Hyper-V vSwitch will no longer have the capability to be bound to an LBFO team. Instead, it can be bound via Switch Embedded Teaming (SET).

Language Community tab in Feedback Hub: The Language Community tab will be removed from the Feedback Hub. The standard feedback process: Feedback Hub - Feedback is the recommended way to provide translation feedback.

My People / People in the Shell: My People is no longer being developed. It may be removed in a future update.

TFS1/TFS2 IME: TSF1 and TSF2 IME will be replaced by TSF3 IME in a future release. Text Services Framework (TFS) enables language technologies. TSF IME are Windows components that you can add to enable typing text for Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean languages.

Package State Roaming (PSR): PSR will be removed in a future update. PSR allows non-Microsoft developers to access roaming data on devices, enabling developers of UWP applications to write data to Windows and synchronize it to other instantiations of Windows for that user. The recommended replacement for PSR is Azure App Service. Azure App Service is widely supported, well documented, reliable, and supports cross-platform/cross-ecosystem scenarios such as iOS, Android and web.

The Windows 10 November 2019 Update released to the public yesterday, bringing mostly small improvements to the OS. Also, it's recommended to create a backup of your files to an external drive or cloud using OneDrive.

Configure System Restore point

While you're less likely to encounter problems if you're using the May 2019 Update, because version 1909 doesn't require reinstallation in this scenario, there are still chances of unexpected errors.

If you're running the May 2019 Update, before proceeding with the installation, it's a good idea to enable and configure System Restore to create a restore point, which you can then use to undo the changes and go back to the previous good-known state.

System Restore may not be enabled by default, in which you'll need to follow these steps:

Open Start.

Search for Create a restore point, and click the top result to open the System Properties app.

Under the "Protection Settings" section, select the main "System" drive, and click the Configure button.

Select the Turn on system protection option.

Click the Apply button.

Click the Create button.

Specify a name for the restore point. You only need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and internet connection. that includes everything you need to know to perform a clean installation of Windows 10.

Wrapping things app

Although Microsoft continues with the idea of making available two feature updates every year, this time around it's a little different. Instead of shipping big features and changes, the latest version is only a minor update to service the May 2019 Update. As a result, the update experience will be different depending on the version the device is running, which also means that if you're already running version 1903, reinstallation won't be required. Therefore, the risks of issues during and after the upgrade should be minimal.

However, if you're still running the October 2018 Update, April 2018 Update, or an even older version, then the upgrade process will require full reinstallation. Therefore, increasing the chances of running into problems or stumble upon hardware and software compatibility issues.

The instructions in this guide will mostly help users coming from an older version of Windows 10 using Windows Update, Media Creation Tool, or Update Assistant. Or, if you decide to upgrade from Windows 10 version 1903 to version 1909 using the Media Creation Tool or Update Assistant, which is not recommended as using Windows Update will be a safer and quicker method.

As always, it's never recommended to upgrade as soon as the feature update is ready, as it may still contain unknown issues and bugs that may negatively affect the experience. Instead, it's best to wait until you receive the notification to start the installation process of the new version manually.

Did you experience any problems updating to the latest version of Windows 10?
On November 12, since no major problems were found, Microsoft has now started the slow rollout of the Windows 10 November 2019 Update (version 1909). This is the eighth refresh since the original release, and it's a continuation of the May 2019 Update with several improvements. However, you won't find new significant features or visual changes, because the company is trying something different this time around.

Instead of releasing two big semi-annual updates every year, starting with version 1909, Microsoft is trying to push the first feature update of the year as the most significant, and the second feature update as a collection of improvements to complement the previous release.

Check out our in-depth Windows 10 November 2019 update reivew

As a result, version 1909 is being offered as a light cumulative update on devices already running the May 2019 Update, making the update experience less disruptive. And on devices running an older release, such as the October 2018 Update, the upgrade experience isn't not changing.

However, even with these new changes, it's still not guaranteed that your computer will receive the latest feature update on day one.

Black Friday buyer's guide: Best deals on the best Windows laptops

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll outline the deployment process that Microsoft is likely to use to make sure every device has a smooth upgrade to the November 2019 Update.

What devices are initially getting the November 2019 Update?

XPS 15 (Image credit: Windows Central)

In the same manner as the May 2019 Update, the November 2019 Update will be offered as an optional update. This means that the update will not install automatically until you start the process manually.

Starting on November 12, leveraging Microsoft AI and Machine Learning technologies, devices that indicate that won't have problems running the new version will receive the notification to download and install the update manually from the Windows Update settings page. Usually, these devices can include Surface and computers from popular brands (such as those from Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, etc.) that came originally with Windows 10.

However, the update experience will depend upon the version that you're using. For instance, if you're already running the May 2019 Update (version 1903), then you'll receive the new version as a cumulative update like those your device installs every month. Using this process will only update the parts of the installation that have changed, resulting in a faster and less disruptive update experience that doesn't require full reinstallation.

On the other hand, if you're running an older version, such as the October 2018 Update, then you'll still be able to download and install the November 2019 Update manually, but it'll take more time, and the process will require full reinstallation like in previous releases.

Although you'll have the choice to upgrade whenever you're ready, devices using a version nearing the end of service will eventually receive version 1909 automatically to make sure that they continue being supported. The good news is that this doesn't always happen as soon as the new version releases. Usually, the automatic update happens weeks after the release of a new version.

As the rollout progresses, Microsoft will diligently continue to monitor and collect telemetry data and real-time feedback from consumers and manufacturers to prevent problems from spreading. Then when the November 2019 Update has proven to be more compatible, it'll expand to other devices (usually within weeks of the original release date).

In the event that an unknown issue appears, the company will temporarily block the feature update on devices that could be affected, and the block will remain until the problem is resolved permanently.

As per usual, even though, the new version will initially be available on select hardware configurations, other factors can prevent your device from getting Windows 10 version 1909. Some of these factors can include a specific piece of hardware or peripheral connected to your computer, incompatible drivers, programs, security software (such as third-party antivirus), and your location can also affect when the new feature update is available.

Can I upgrade manually to the November 2019 Update without waiting?

After the November 2019 Update is ready, you'll get a notification in the Windows Update settings page, but if you don't want to wait, you have multiple options to upgrade manually as soon as the new version becomes available, including using the Update Assistant or Media Creation Tool.

However, if you're already using version 1903, you should only use the Windows Update as using the other tools will require reinstallation. The Media Creation Tool and Update Assistant are alternative methods to update devices running the October 2018 Update and older releases.

Update Assistant

Windows 10 Update Assistant (Image credit: Windows Central)

The Microsoft Update Assistant is a tool available to upgrade devices when Windows Update isn't working. If you don't want to deal with errors and issues, it's recommended to wait even if you get the notification, and upgrade once you know that the new version doesn't have significant issues. To stay informed on the latest issues, you can keep checking Windows Central, or you can also check the Microsoft dashboard website for Windows 10 version 1909.

Developed under the 19H2 codename, the November 2019 Update starts its throttled rollout as Microsoft turns its attention to getting the next feature update, dubbed 20H1, ready for release in the first half of 2020.

With the November 2019 Update, Microsoft has taken a different tact than previous feature updates. Rather than bombarding Windows 10 users with a ton of new features, the November 2019 Update largely focuses on performance improvements and fixes. While it's a much more cautious update than its predecessors, the November 2019 Update still packs its fair share of new goodies, though.

Most notably, this release adds the option for third-party digital assistants, like Amazon's Alexa, to work with voice activation from the lock screen. New events can now be created from the Calendar flyout on the taskbar, and there are new notification settings. The search box in File Explorer is now powered by Windows Search as well, which means you can see your online OneDrive content alongside traditional search results.

Windows 10 19H2: What is it, and what's included?

The update is available now for those who wish to install it straight away, but just like the May 2019 Update, this will be offered an an optional install until the version of Windows 10 you're currently running hits end of support, then the latest version of Windows 10 will be automatically installed. This means if you're on version 1803, the version 1909 update will be pushed to you automatically soon.

The November 2019 Update is available now via Windows Update as Windows 10 version 1909. Also out today are Microsoft's usual Patch Tuesday updates for other supported versions of Windows.

This update moves the build number up to 18363.418, which also happens to be the final build number Microsoft is expecting the Windows 10 November 2019 Update to take one.

There's no list of fixes or improvements for this build. However, Microsoft does caution that only Insiders who are on build 18362.10024 in the Release Preview ring will see this update. If you're still enrolledi n the Slow ring, you won't receive today's release, Microsoft says.

Today, we have released 19H2 Build 18363.418 to Windows Insiders who are on Build 18362.10024 and in the Release Preview ring. If you are on Build 18362.10024 and still in the Slow ring, you will not receive this update. You will need to switch to the Release Preview ring as recommended in the below blog post to pick up the final 19H2 build today. If you remain in the Slow ring, you will be updated to 20H1 very shortly. Now's the time to double-check your Windows Insider Program settings!

Earlier in October, Microsoft said that it expects build 18363.418 to be the November 2019 Update's final build number for release. Now that it's in testing on the Release Preview ring, it's likely that we're very close to a full release. There's still no official word on a release date, but it should arrive in the coming weeks.

The November 2019 Update is much smaller in scope than previous feature updates. The next major update will be 20H1, which is currently in testing with the Fast ring and is expected to launch in the first half of 2020.

Windows 10 November 2019 Update: What is it, and what's included?

Windows 10 build 18362.10024 is now available on the Slow ring, and it brings some fixes that were shipped as part of the latest cumulative update for the May 2019 Update.

Additionally, Microsoft says that this build prepares the Slow ring to receive the final November 2019 Update release build. From Microsoft:

This update also includes a fix necessary to move Insiders in the Slow ring to the final 19H2 build as noted in the below blog post. Any Insider on Build 18362.100xx should receive this update regardless of your ring settings. If you already moved from the Slow ring to Release Preview ring as recommended below last week – you will still get this update.

Here's a recap of the highlights included in the cumulative update:

Updates to improve security when using Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge.

Updates for verifying user names and passwords.

Updates for storing and managing files.

The Windows 10 November 2019 Update will be the final name for 19H2, and it's expected to release in the coming weeks — potentially on November 12 during Patch Tuesday. The update is much smaller in scope than previous feature updates, acting more akin to a service pack release for the May 2019 Update. The 20H1 update, expected in the first half of 2020, will be more expansive from a feature standpoint.

Windows 10 November 2019 Update: What is it, and what's included?

Microsoft is planning to release the next semi-annual update, Windows 10 November 2019 Update (version 1909), at some point in the coming weeks, and this means that compatible devices will soon start receiving a small set of new features and several enhancements.

Similar to the previous release, the November 2019 Update will roll out as an optional update, and it'll install only when you start the process manually from the Windows Update settings page. However, depending on the version that you're using, the update experience will be different. If you're already running the May 2019 Update, the new version will arrive as a cumulative update that won't require reinstallation. In the case that you're running an older version, the upgrade will take more time, and it'll require the reinstallation of Windows 10.

Also, even though Windows 10 won't force the November 2019 Update, devices running a version nearing the end of service will eventually receive the update automatically to maintain them supported.

Although these new changes should help to improve the upgrade experience for users, if you want to make sure you're in complete control of the upgrade process, or you prefer your current installation even though it's reaching the end of service, you can delay the Windows 10 version 1909 in at least three ways.

In this Windows 10 guide, we walk you through the different ways that you can delay the November 2019 Update on your device, whether it's running Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Home, without missing essential quality updates.

How to delay the Windows 10 November 2019 Update

How to defer the Windows 10 November 2019 Update

How to block the Windows 10 November 2019 Update

Important: Although you can use these instructions on most versions of Windows 10, because the new update will be available as a minor cumulative update for the May 2019 Update, the target of this guide is more for devices running the October 2018 Update and older versions.

How to delay the Windows 10 November 2019 Update

If you clicked the Download and Dating back to the days of Windows Phone, Sean has long been intrigued by anything that turns the tech world on its head.

Microsoft shared the name in a new blog post and explained that the update is in its final steps before an official release.

The naming is not that surprising considering when the Update is being released. In the past, Microsoft used a naming structured that relied on seasons such as the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update but switched to a format with a month in the name to reduce confusion in a previous update.

People at Microsoft believe that Windows 10 build 18363.418 is the final build. This build is already available to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Ring.

Windows 10 19H2: What is it, and what's included?

The November 2019 Update is different than Microsoft's usual major updates. Instead of requiring a large download and being delivered through a standalone release, the November 2019 Update will be delivered just like a normal Patch Tuesday release. The November 2019 Update doesn't have as many new features as previous major updates. Instead, it focuses on fixing bugs, improving performance, and introducing minor new features.
