Have you looked at your Samsung ATIV S and thought what it would be like if you could have a third column of Live tiles? We'll be getting more room for Live Tiles with the 1080p hardware that will arrive alongside GDR3, but if you own the Samsung Windows Phone 8 device (interop-unlocked), you'll be able to add more tiles to your Start screen with some handy homebrew tools.

WPH Tweaks is a such a tool, which we've covered before. Originally developed by Windows Phone Hacker, WPH Tweaks enabled Windows Phone owners to alter system settings that weren't available in a retail unit. Now, WPH Tweaks for Windows Phone 8 is currently in early testing and is available over on XDA Developers. An interesting feature included in this custom deployment is the allocation of more space for Live Tiles.

The above feature can be disabled, but it does allow you to have up to three medium-sized tiles on each row. To find out what else is included, as well as how you can get involved and download the necessary files, check out the thread on XDA Developers.

Be sure to head on over to our forum to join in the discussion. WPH Tweaks will reportedly work with any interop-unlocked Windows Phone 8 device. Should you look to try this out on your own Windows Phone, we cannot take any responsibility should you damage your smartphone.

Source: XDA Developers; thanks, WP8Expert, for the tip!

The hacking scene for Windows Phone 8 so far has been pretty dismal, with a lot of the legends in the community moving on to more open systems like Android. Although Windows Phone 7.x did see some minor movement within the fringe hacking community, its replacement OS has not met the same fate. The reason for that is Windows Phone 8 was unable to be interop-unlocked, a phrase not familiar to most casual users.

When it comes to operating systems, especially Windows Phone, there are different levels. Developer unlocking is the easiest and can be achieved by joining Microsoft’s developer program. Once registered, users can unlock their device by connecting to a computer and logging in. This allows developers to side-load XAP files i.e. apps not from the Store. But even side-loaded XAP files are sandboxed by the OS and cannot touch the deeper level functions. OEMs and carriers get access to this area, which is why they can roll out system updates.

Now, for the first time an interop-unlock has been achieved on the Samsung ATIV S. The news come via XDA Forums, home to many in the homebrew and hacking community. The trick was accomplished by a user nicknamed ‘GoodDayToDie’ and while it’s not for the casual user, for those looking for an adventure can try and repeat the process.

Currently there are very few if any apps or services available to take advantage of this unlocking, though that can easily change in the future. It’s unclear at the time if this process could translate over to other Windows Phone 8 devices, especially the more popular Lumia line from Nokia. Device bootloaders and differing configurations make direct translation of interop unlocking difficult, though we’ll continue to monitor for any changes.

Source: XDA Forums; Thanks, Trevor H., for the tip

The Focus gets some life breathed into it

The other day we gave you folks a quick tour of some bits of Windows Phone 7.8. The upcoming OS update is not yet finished but pieces of it are being incorporated into custom ROMs and are hitting all generation 1 and 2 devices, including the HTC Arrive, Titan and even now the Samsung Focus.

The Focus is considered by many to be the “classic” Windows Phone as it had a great design, sold well and many are in fact still using it. For that reason, it’s kind of neat to see it get this cobbled together 7.8 ROM, which has some other nice bonus features like some Nokia apps and USB Video out.

We haven’t loaded up the ROM ourselves, as our Focus’s battery would need to be brought back to life, so you’ll be taking a risk. We should also note that the Focus hardware version number matters here: version 1.3 are good to go, while version 1.4 are not.

Will the Samsung Focus get an official Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade? We have no idea, but that update is not due until after Windows Phone 8 is released and when it does finally hit, once could always use the CAB method for updating just like in the past. Unfortunately by doing a custom ROM, you will have to hard-reset the device.

For more information, you can head to XDA Forums. Thanks, Philip A., who says this ROM is working out great for him

We decided to flash it on to one of our devices and give it a go, so make sure to check out the video after the break…

Truth be told, so far Windows Phone 7.8 (build 8835.35) is just a new Start screen (with multi-sized Tiles) and nothing more. The custom ROM itself features of a bunch of neat things, including the Bazzar homebrew Store and even USB Video Out, but none of that is part of 7.8.

So how does it run? It’s actually quite neat, as to be expected. We’re really excited for the new Start screen as it makes organization a lot easier, with lower priority apps getting a tiny tile, while important ones can go ‘double wide’. It is odd seeing the Tiles that large, due to the removal of the “gutter” to the right but you get used to it quickly. The EB Edition ROM also handles quite well and we have yet to experience any major issues.

Is it worth unlocking (HSPL), flashing on a compatible ROM and then re-flashing 7.8? Depends on your time and ability to follow directions. The actual process only took about 25 minutes, but it is considerably longer if you have to read up on it. And you should, the risks here are substantial if you don’t do things right. And although the 7.8 beta Start screen is nice, there are some quirks here and there that makes this optional only for those who have the spare time and strong desire.

We should note that there is an AT&T Titan edition, but hard-unlocking an AT&T phone may be more work (needs Y-cable and GoldCard; correct us if we’re wrong).

It has only a few Deepshining customizations.

You can always flash back a WP7.5 Rom if you wish.

Of course we’re not sure if its more astonishing that Dotcompt managed to get his hands on WP7.8 (which is most likely unfinished) or that he went so far as to port it over to the HD7.

For those wanting this on other Windows Phone, we’re sure that it is just a matter of time before other ‘chefs’ pick up and do just that.

Source: XDA Forums; Also see Jaxbot's take from Windows Phone Hacker here.

Without this tool-set, modified OS's for those devices simply have nowhere to go. Now that these tools are available comes the second step: the creation of custom ROMs which will require some "chefs" to cook them up,

Second generation HTC devices have been notoriously difficult to crack for DFT so this is a fairly big win for the homebrew community. Unfortunately, devices like the Titan II still won't work with this tool so it's best to still wait for DFT to get that going.

In a well planned release, there are at least two custom ROMs now available too:

HTC Titan by mwang - Tango OS (8773), Replace HTC Apps software, add Registry editor, file explorers ...etc; Few tweaks ,DFT FullUnlock support XAP IE download and install, full play XBL games; ISharing,Static MAC Address

HTC Radar by mwang - Tango OS (8773), Replace HTC Apps software, add Registry editor, file explorers ...etc; Few tweaks ,DFT FullUnlock support XAP IE download and install, full play XBL games; ISharing,Static MAC Address

Once again we need to stress to proceed with caution when attempting these modifications as this can "brick" your phone if you don't follow the directions carefully. Regardless, it's exciting to finally see some movement on these two fantastic Windows Phones.
RainbowMod? Sounds familiar, right? We previously covered a custom ROM for the Lumia 710 sharing an identical name, and now it's out for the Lumia 800. Built on Windows Phone "Tango" (7.10.8773.98) and based on Chinese firmware, RainbowMod is shipped with both English (US) and Russian languages.

It's required that the owner has configured the Qualcomm boot loader on their Lumia 800. So what's included in RainbowMod?

Full Unlock from UltraShot

Removed OEM applications (Nokia Drive, Maps, etc.)

Search key remapping

QuickLaunch menu for quick switching state of WiFi, 3G, Flight mode, Power save, etc.

Ability to access file system via WiFi/USB

Integrated Live ID, DppImplant no longer needed, but new key can also be banned

Orientation locker

Added multiple colour themes

Easy installation xap from browser or file manager

Unlocked Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts (limitation of Chinese firmware)

Added Google and Yandex search engines

xb0xmod cert for cab-updates

Cab-updatable

Lots of minor changes

Updatability via Zune (not guaranteed)

It must be noted that the ROM creator does not own a Lumia 800, and thus this may well bust a cap in your Lumia's ass. Windows Phone Central takes no responsibility for any damage caused to your device. Proceed with caution and at your own risk. Head on over to the XDA thread for more information and support.

Source: XDA; thanks Maersk for the heads up!

Just a few weeks before it officially hits, Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh aka "Tango" (build 8773) has managed to be dumped onto XDA for the world to see (and use). Wasting no time, some chefs have already cooked up some custom ROMs for the HD2 (which will evidently live until the year 2031 with updates) and the Samsung Omnia7.

More ROMs will be expected to follow soon for first generation devices, notably HTC ones and the Samsung Focus. Since there are no custom ROMs for Gen 2 devices (due to a locked bootloader), we're not expecting this Tango ROM to help too much though perhaps some folks at XDA will find a way.

Tango is thought to a "refresh" of Windows Phone 7.5 with only minor, under the hood changes including support for lower-spec'd devices (256MB of RAM) as well as some MMS improvements and a fix for the SMS bug. Like all previous updates, this is expected to trickle out for current phones but only at the discretion of the carrier.

Source: HD2, Omnia 7; via XDA

Custom ROMs on Windows Phone, mostly isolated to Gen 1 devices like the HTC HD7 which applies here, usually focus on things like updating to the latest OS. In that case, the newest version of Deepshining by dotcompt is up to snuff as it now features 8107 of the OS. But Deepshining goes much further with version 7 released yesterday.

The biggest addition, besides the custom SMS backup tool and Skydrive would be the Deepshining Marketplace. That's right, this is the first custom Marketplace that features XAP files from XDA and Marketplace Aps and Games. The files are stored on the Deepshining servers, which means when they are updated at XDA, they will be uploaded and distributed through the ROM. There will be an update panel for users to check to see if they have the latest and greatest homebrew apps. (At the moment, we're unclear if this features any illegal apps or games, but we're giving the benefit of the doubt it does not).

Early reviews from users seem to be heaping praise on the ROM and no doubt having 8107 on an HD7 must feel pretty good. Of course you'll need to unlock the HD7 and take your time updating, but overall it seems to be worth it.

Head here to XDA to learn more and we'll see about flashing our HD7 to give all this a test drive.

While he hasn't provided any detail surrounding the specifications of the device, untitledmangxg does note that it sports a very nice 4" IPS display and is powered by Mango.

We've reached out to untitledmangxg for more information. It doesn't look half bad for a second generation device. What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments.

Source: XDA Developers Forum, thanks chaitanya91845 for the heads up!

But with the increasingly wide spread availability of official unlocking opportunities e.g. ChevronWP7 Labs, the notion has become more reasonable, mostly due to the increase number of users.

Over at XDA, 'BAZAAR' has launched as an early beta for those interested in taking it for a spin. The alternative Marketplace won't be confined to the strict, seemingly arbitrary rules of the official Marketplace (see Ffffound) but it also won't be a haven for cracked or pirated apps. Instead, this will be a source for developers to distribute their homebrew apps that Microsoft would not approve as well as standard freeware apps.

That's the good news. But here's the bad: you need to have a DFT, NextGen or Deepshining Custom ROM installed on your phone i.e. a ROM that supports XAP-installation by IE9 (yeah, you can do that in a custom ROM). That's a shame and quite a big limitation right now as going the custom ROM route cuts out a huge chunk of potential users, including all Gen 2 devices. Still, it's an initial framework and we can hope that there will be a breakthrough where this will be allowed

The app itself only allows browsing right now as they work on getting permissions for the repository. The developers are looking for user feedback from those with custom ROMs and will be adding the following features in the future:

Creating an account within Bazaar

Managing favorites applications list and the ability to download and install them as a batch process (very useful after reset/flashing new ROM version)

Add ratings and comments for applications

Submit new applications via Bazaar web site

Online search in Bazaar applications repository

And many more…

It is cool looking and we hope the start of something bigger. Maybe Microsoft could land a hand to an unofficial Marketplace?

Source: XDA; Thanks, Carlos, for the tip!

Zloy Pryanik at XDA has bumped his NextGen+ custom ROM to v1.8 and we have to admit, this is starting to get real nice looking. The latest version brings the 7740 OS update as well as the latest drivers and radio software to the venerable Windows Phone. On top of that, there are quite a few interesting and unique enhancement to the ROM that has piqued our interest:

Light ROM (~260 mb *.nbh include radio)

Full-Unlocked (full support registry edit / ie install .xap ... etc) Mega Thanks DFT Team

Firmware reduced by 31MB , registry - 500kb

Update OEM software , add Touchexplorer, registry editor

Deleted Device Feedback

New sound camera shot

New Wallpapers, pictures

Ringtones and Sounds from Apple iPhone

Facebook-blue accent color

Custom system graphics

Watch videos from Zune in Bluetooth Headphones

Enabled IPV6

How's that for a feature-set? As you can probably discern, all of that reduction in file size and stripping of things has resulted in a clean, fast ROM with some neat customizations. For instance, the text emoticons are now colored as are the icons for setting up new email accounts--subtle, but nice. Even battery life seems remarkably improved, with one user's screenshot show the battery at 90% and an estimated 1 day, 13 hours remaining--we're a bit envious!
We know for a fact that Microsoft was using the Toshiba TG-01 aka Tsunagi as a developer device for Windows Phone 7. Heck, we even have one of the rare birds in possession (see above). The device was ahead of its time when released over two years ago, sporting an ultra thin body, large LCD screen and a 1GHz CPU. But fast forward to 2011 and it's quite the clunker.

Now over at XDA, developer Nokser has been successful in porting WP7 to that device for those who only have Windows Mobile 6.5 on board. We say successful, but it is full of caveats and lots of early bugs, so this is more a proof-of-concept than a ready-to-install for the masses release. Still, it's a big step in the right direction, even if WP7 is pretty awful on it due to the Tsunagi's resistive touch screen.

Some drawbacks, should all two of you be interested are: no camera, potentially very low memory, poor reception, inability to zoom in on maps and photos, etc. These issues are expected to be fixed, so we'll see where all of this goes soon.

Source: XDA (thread); Thanks, Ross "H3ALY" H, for the tip!

Lots of little things have been happening if you have a developer unlocked device, preferably with the new interop level needed to side-load some more advance apps.

First off, over at Windows Phone Hacker they've detailed a more simple method for getting Internet Sharing onto your Samsung Mango phone (Omnia 7, Focus). Once you have your developer unlocked device also interop-unlocked, it only takes two files and a reboot to get the much-coveted feature on to your phone. As you can see from the pic below, we manged to do it for our AT&T Focus and it works like a charm (seriously, it's a nice tethering solution).

Next up are some HTC apps. Yes, so long as HTC tirelessly works on specialized apps, those mischievous fellas over at XDA will be trying to port them. This time, they've managed to grab the Omega/Radars's OEM files, which includes that new HTC Hub. We loaded it onto our Focus and it works quite well. In addition, you can even add the Dock Mode app, which we're big fans of, for a more complete device. Stay clear though of Attentive Phone, the sound enhancer and camera apps as they won't do anything for your non-HTC phone.

Finally, there's a unique app from GoodDayToDie at XDA called MultiTaskToggle:

"Threw together something fun for you: a one-click (don't sue me, Bezos) app for enabling or disabling multitasking on Mango. Fast app switching + full multitasking = awesome! Disabling multitasking when you need to save battery = convenient!""Features: Secondary tile with deep linking! Shows current multitask state and toggles it when tapped. Supports HTC, LG, Samsung phones [NEW]. Works on Mango! Uses no homebrew DLLs."

Basically the app allows you to set multitasking on/off with one tap on a Live Tile. Here's we're talking about the full-fledged, instant-resuming multi-tasking. It sucks up more battery life, but it also faster and allows things to run in the background. Being able to turn it on/of with a simple touch, therefore, is a much welcomed addition for the power users out there. You can find that thread right here.

We covered the unbranded Mozart Mango ROM the other day and now like dominoes, the rest are here too--well most of them. Yes folks, leaked "final" builds of Mango updates for numerous HTC devices are now available for your unauthorized usage, meaning you are taking matters into your own hands.

What these ROMs (7720.68) offer over the RTM build is of course updated radios, some HTC customizations, presumably specific APIs for things like the compass and other unique tweaks to improve the Mango experience. So here's what's available:

7 Pro - RUU_Gold_S_HTC_Europe_3.02.401.01_Radio_5.69.09.29 a_22.50.50.21_Signed_GOLD_RELEASE.exe

Mozart - RUU_Mozart_S_HTC_Europe_4.06.401.00_5.69.09_RELEAS E.exe

Mozart - RUU_Mozart_S_HTC_RUS_4.06.411.00_5.69.09_RELEASE.exe

HD7 - RUU_Schubert_S_HTC_Europe_4.05.401.02_Radio_5.69.0 9.29a_22.50.50.21_Signed_SCHUBERT_RELEASE.exe

Trophy - RUU_Spark_S_HTC_Europe_4.06.401.00_5.69.09_RELEASE .exe

Trophy - RUU_Spark_W_S_VERIZON_WWE_2.01.605.04_2K_new_parti tion_RELEASE.exe

Most of those are Europe-only ROMs, so take heed but look at that last one--yup, for once Verizon HTC Trophy (review) users get something early!
Let's face it, the HTC HD2 is pretty amazing. And the minds over at XDA are equally amazing. Together this dynamic combination has turned a Windows phone into a dual-booting Win/Android wonder and a Mango-toting machine. However, early iterrations of latter inovation had one big problem: Windows Live services did not work when Mango was ported over to the HD2.

Well, fear not. The members over at XDA have done it again, working out the bugs to provide the masses with a Mango ROM for the HD2, complete with a working Marketplace. If you are feeling adventurous, click the link below to get it. Remember, we just bring you the news, we are not responsible for fried devices or Steve Ballmer showing up at your house with gym sock full of quarters.

Update: In an interview with All Things D, Microsoft's Bill Cox says the following about hacking the HD2: “We say tinker away with Mango and enjoy the juice...But beware the fine print — unlocking phones may void your warranty.” Nice to see Microsoft taking a more laid-back approach to the XDA devs.

Source: XDA; Via: PocketNow

A registered member over at the XDA Devloper forums has posted a potential fix to the problem caused by the Chevronwp7.Updater, which leaves devices in an un-updatable state. This has been posted by a user who has no other posts on the forum, it hasn't been recommended by Chris Walsh and isn't an official response from Microsoft. We must urge you guys who are still awaiting the fix to hold off from attempting the below explanation. But for conversations sake, we saw the need to share.

To see what ahodes posted in the thread, head on past the break.

From the XDA Post:

I did some digging and figured out what's gone wrong. Some phones have more than one language installed, but the Chevron updater only installs the language update for the language you choose. When Zune goes to update your phone, it tries to install updates for the rest of the languages to, but fails since the versions on the phone are incorrect. All that needs to be done is install the missing language updates. I have a Samsung Focus that was updated with the US English update. Looking at the log files for the update, it also needed:

German

Italian

Spanish

French

Using the Chevron updater as a base, I reworked it to install the missing languages. If you're using a Samsung Focus, you can get the exe I wrote to update my phone from [LINKREMOVED]. I can't promise that nothing horrible will happen, but my phone did update properly to 7392 via Zune after running it.

If you have some other phone that uses a different combination of languages, it's just a matter of applying a different set of updates. I'm guessing the phones that work fine only had one language installed to begin with. Definitely no need to reflash the phone!

It's a sure interesting look as to why the issue is affecting devices and what's actually wrong. Mr Walsh shortly replied to this post:

So this "may" give you 7392. But this can also cause other issues if you install language packs that aren't supposed to be on your device. So I'd hold off on using this.

To prevent further issues with your device(s), please await for the fix to be approved by Microsoft so we can all get back on track and look forward to Mango. We will -- of course -- update you all as soon as word gets out about the submitted Walsh fix.

Source: XDA Dev Forum, via: 1800PocketPC

Martin_S has create a very lite app that enables searching and streaming of most major TV shows. In short, the app pulls down user-uploaded videos, presumably from various video-hosting sites.

Of course such grey-area usage of streaming and copyright concerns means we'll never see this app in the Marketplace, but hey, till then you can continue to flaunt those laws and stream some mediocre quality TV to your phone on the go. The app is still kind of rough and barren--but it does work as you can see in the video above.

Follow the thread here and use the version in the above video here.

A ROM Manual Kitchen has been released to allow developers and technically savvy folk to create and develop custom ROMs for WP7 devices. Haseeb Ahmed, a senior XDA member is behind the first ROM kitchen to be released into the WP7 realm, and a GUI based version is planned to be developed, but hasn't been 100% confirmed.

The archive contains a HTC ROM Image Editor with HV Edit and IMGFS packaged with a few .BAT files to make it all possible, and simple for not-so-experienced personnel. Haseeb provides easy-to-follow instructions that are listed after the break.

Here you go...

1.Extract part04.bin from Data.zip of any flashable MAGLDR WP7 ROM for HTC HD22.Rename part04.bin to part04.nb and put it in the "1.ROM Image Editor" folder3.Run "htcRIE.exe" & Select part04.nb4.Select IMGFS in the Left Column, then click on any item in the right column & press "Ctrl+A" to slect All.5.Now press the "Save Selectd Files" button on the top bar & save the files to the "3.IMGFS from Dump\dump" folder5a.Again, Select IMGFS in the Left Column and press the "Save Selectd Files" button on the top bar & save the "imgfs.bin" file to the "3.IMGFS from Dump" folder6.Once saved, goto "3.IMGFS from Dump\dump" & copy the "default.hv" & "user.hv" to the "2.HV Editor" folder7.Now drag and drop "default.hv" & "user.hv" on "HVEdit.exe"8.Delete "3.IMGFS from Dump\dump\default.hv" & "3.IMGFS from Dump\dump\user.hv" files9.Two files will be creatd "default.hvm" & "user.hvm" respectively. Edit them as per your requirement to make Registry changes.10.Once editing is done, again drag & drop the "default.hvm" and "user.hvm" onto the "HVEdit.exe"11.Now "default.hv" & "user.hv" will be recreated. Cut & Paste them into "3.IMGFS from Dump\dump" folder & replace the old files.12.Now run "start.bat" in the "3.IMGFS from Dump" folder13.Cut and paste the imgfs-out.bin into the "1.ROM Image Editor" folder14.Make a copy of part04.nb in the same folder & rename it to part04.bin15.Run the "build.bat" in this folder16.Now replace the part04.bin file in the "data.zip" with this new creatd part04.bin17.Flash MAGLDR Rom as you normally would.

To download the package, or should you have any problems or feedback for the developer, head on over to the thread at the XDA forum. Haseeb also states that neither himself, nor the DFT Team can take any responsibility for problems or damage that may occur through usage.

Via: Aliwaqas

One thing that seems to be missing from all of the audiobook apps in the Marketplace is the ability to easily bookmark your spot in an MP3 and return to it.

XDA member, dbroome, has developed AudioBookMark, which as the name implies, does just that. AudioBookMark not only remembers which MP3 file you are listening to, but where in that file as well. And in case you are someone who likes to skip from title to title, you can select from a list of your books and dive right in where you left off on each. You can use the built-in transport keys to speed to a certain point of an MP3, or manually enter HH:MM:SS to jump directly to the juiciest parts.

You can download it here for $.99.

Source: XDA

Comment on the powers of the dark side of the Force?

If so, XDA Developers member bo11ux has developed an app that might fit the bill. The Star Wars Sounds app is a soundboard highlighting twelve characters from the popular sci-fi movie.

Simply tap on the icon for a particular character to hear the sound bite. Each character has three sound bites except for Darth Vadar who has four. Sound quality is a little choppy on some of the phrases but this simple app is a fun addition for the Star Wars fan in all of us. You can download the .cab file here.

via: 1800PocketPC.com

XdaRoms.com has added a membership system to their website. XdaRoms is a relatively new website repository for custom or cooked Roms. As the inventory of roms build, it may very well become a one stop shop to satisfy your cooked rom appetite.

XdaRoms membership gives you the ability to post roms and news. We have also been told by the website creator, bowpay, that in the very near future XdaRoms will have a few more new features.

The features include Rom Favorites which will alert members when an update to your favorite rom is posted; Rom Reviews which will give those shopping for roms a feel for what's out there; and Carrier Integration which will tie each rom to the various carriers. It is hopeful that these new features will give romaholics (or the casual flasher) more resources to choose a compatible rom and avoid bricking your Windows Phone.

Now that XDA user Sl4sher has gotten some of the kinks worked out, we’re comfortable putting it out there for our readers.

The concept behind GVV is to give you quick and easy access to your Google Voice Voicemail. Messages can be downloaded and cached to allow playback on your device. After you are done with your message it can be deleted or marked as read. The transcript of your message is also available, allowing you to quickly and easily triage your messages. GVV also uses your phone’s Contact List to display who placed the call.

Version 0.4 adds the ability to schedule updates, make calls via Google Voice, and separates your voice and SMS messages. Microsoft’s .Net Compact Framework 3.5 is required.

Want to see what a particular chef has cooked up? XDA ROMs is hoping to fit those needs.

XDA ROMS is a clearing house of sorts for cooked ROMS that has been created by bowpay, an XDA Developer's Forum member. The cooking is categorized based on the device, chef, language and OS. XDA ROMS also has the ability to compare up to five ROMS side by side and you can also rate the ROMS.

The site is still in a Beta stage so it may take some time to iron out all the bugs and get the ROM database fully stocked.

XDA member 6Fg8 has created an application, Metal Detector 0.2.0.0, that works under the premises that the built in compass on the HD2 relies on the earth's magnetic field to calculate the deviation from magnetic north. If you put a piece of metal near the compass, it deviates from the natural deviation.

There are still a few bugs to work out in the application but for the most part, it performs as advertised. Yet somehow I don't see scanning the beach with an HD2 looking for buried treasure. However, if that screw you dropped blends in too well with the carpet, this application might be of some use. [via 1800pocketpc.com]

Rumors abound in regards to Windows Mobile 7, HTC's HD2, and Microsoft's purported Chassis 1. Speculation stems from the story that Microsoft has a "reference chassis" for Windows Mobile 7, and the fact that the HD2 is the only device which qualifies based on the rumored hardware requirements.

The latest round of conjecture is based on an XDA post detailing the response that he received when he asked HTC about Windows Mobile 7 for his HD2. The core of HTC's response is as follows.

"What we do it ROM Upgrades from our website, however 6.5 windows mobile has only been out 2 months and windows mobile 7 hasn't even been developed. This wont be out until next november at the earliest. But when it is available it will be a free download."

Overlooking the underwhelming English skills, let's break this down. First of all, HTC does indeed release ROM updates from their website. Windows Mobile 6.5 was released in October, so this is more or less true. The statement that Windows Mobile 7 has not been developed is probably not true, but we can be fairly certain that it is not a finished product at this point. The statement about November is very noncommittal, and doesn't seem to come from anyone with actual knowledge of the timeline. The final statement, that it will be a free download once it is released, is simply in line with HTC offering free updates for their devices. While you could read into the response and take out that HTC is committed to bringing Windows Mobile 7 to the HD2, the response doesn't actually say that in so many words.

My personal prediction is that the HD2 will get Windows Mobile 7, at least unofficially. Until Microsoft shows Windows Mobile 7 to the world, speculation about what devices will get the upgrade is simply speculation. Stay tuned for news out of Mobile World Congress next month.

[via RedmondPie]

The program was just recently updated to v1.5.2, with updated Flash library package and some minor bug fixes.

Basically you just download the .exe, put it into your \Windows\Opera direction, run it and follow the directions so detailed here. Make sure you choose the right device from the selector.

So how does it work? Pretty well though any limitations come clearly from our aging MSM processors, which struggle to run Flash inside of the resource intensive Opera Mobile browser--in other words, don't plan on too much multi-tasking when watching embedded YouTube videos! Still, it works well on the Touch Pro 2.

Having said that, this is a great example of smart programming, so give it a spin if Flash is what you need.

To refresh, back a few months some letters went out to XDA regarding their hosting of custom ROMs containing WM6.5. Then it appeared to many of us that this was some hoax, specifically the legitimacy of one "James Young"...internet investigator! (dun dun...dun!) came into question.

Flash forward a few months and replace WM6.5 with WM6.5.1 and we get a (redacted) letter basically saying the same thing.

Real or fake?

We think this is fake, again. Unless Microsoft has radically changed its position on this issue from a few months ago, we see no reason to believe these threats. Once again, we cite Microsoft from March:

“Taking action against sites such as XDA-Developers isn’t a matter of concern for Microsoft” says Maarten Sonneveld of Microsoft Netherlands against tweakers.net. “What happens there, the modifying of ROMs, is illegal. The intellectual property however is not with us. The ROMs are intellectual property of the producers of the phone or the mobile phone providers if it concerns branded telephones. We simple only deliver the OS.”

Going further and across the pond, we note that PPCGeeks has not received any such notice regarding WM6.5.1, which seems pretty lame for a "clamp down" (although we suppose that some fake letters could be sent out right-quick).

Our advice? Treat this seriously, but not too seriously. How to do that? Simple: if your receive a "take down notice" from...some dude via email, we strongly suggest you actually get in contact with that person BY PHONE and request official information (who they represent, names, more phone numbers, etc.) before you rip down your hard work.

Most DMCA notices target the ISP who then contact you, as you are not actually hosting the alleged offending file. If they don't even know your real name, you don't have too much to worry about.

Update: Mike (Wideawake) of PPCGeeks let us know that indeed, months ago they too had a request from Microsoft to take down WM6.5 but...he actually had a phone call from a Judy Weston at Microsoft and his ISP received a take-down notice. That is what one should expect in these situations. Thanks Mike!

And so I get a warm feeling in my tummy seeing a video like this.

The 750 was passed over for an update to Windows Mobile 6.1, but of course the chefs at XDA Developers took care of that.
It was bound to happen sooner or later, and in a way it shouldn't be a big surprise. On Jan. 22, XDA Developers Member Da_G ported and posted a Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM for the HTC Fuze/Touch Pro. This was a popular cooked ROM that developed a healthy following. If you were one of the many who flashed this ROM, consider yourself amongst the lucky ones. Now, after receiving a "legal complaint" from Microsoft, XDA pulled the links for the cooked ROM as well as other ROMs based on Windows Mobile 6.5.

It also looks like Microsoft is monitoring mirror sites that provide downloads for unlicensed (read: cooked) of Windows Mobile 6.5 as well as Windows Mobile 6.1. Hosting sites have received e-mails sent out by James Young, Internet Investigator on behalf of Microsoft.

The e-mails identify the site as distributing unlicensed material and state,

"We hereby give notice of these activities to you and request that you take expeditious action to remove or disable access to the material described above, and thereby prevent the illegal reproduction and distribution of this copyright work(s) via your company's network."

While Windows 6.1 was mentioned in the email, it appears that the developers of WM 6.5 ROMs were the target of the investigation. Several Windows Mobile 6.1 based ROMs still are available over at XDA.

We will admit to being of two minds on the issue: it's more than reasonable to argue that distributing unreleased and even cooked ROMs is piracy, so Microsoft is well within its rights to shut that stuff down. Add in the likely possibility that 6.5 won't run that well on current hardware and will therefore give a bad impression to users, and it's no surprise that Microsoft put the hammer down. On the other hand, ROM cooking is one of the more exciting (and loyalty-inducing) things going on in the Windows Mobile world (and especially in HTC circles) right now, so it's a bit of a shame to see it tamped down.

There's no telling how all this will play out. It may simply drive the development and distribution of cooked ROMs more underground. Two things are for certain: XDA-Developers.com has definitely seen an increase in traffic, and there are a lot of unhappy chefs in the kitchen.

Read: Fuze Mobility

Update: Looks like this James Young guy might not be on the level. More over at XDA.

Kitchen sink is about the only thing this smartphone doesn't include - but since it's coming out in 2007 I suppose that's a possibility. The thing has a separate graphics card that runs its gigantic VGA display, for Pete's sake. TV-Out, USB On-the-Go. It's making my laptop envious. Or it will in 2007, assuming they're not just yanking our collective chains.

You begged for a large 3.6" VGA display? You got it. An NVIDIA GoForce 5500 GPU for next-generation mobile graphics? Sure, why not? And how about an Intel XScale PXA270 520MHz CPU, 2GB ROM, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, USB On-The-Go, a 2.0-megapixel camera, SRS Mobile HD surround sound support, and TV-out support - all thrown in for good measure? Yes, O2 has some hot stuff planned for 2007!

Read: Pocket PC Thoughts - Daily News, Views, Rants and Raves

Not minor feature differentiation, either. The XDA Orbit is O2 UK's version of O2 Germany's HTC Artemis (AKA the T-Mobile MDA III - though we should say THAT version has slightly different features too, SIGH.). The Orbit and the Artemis share features like GPS and an FM radio for traffic info. Where the Artemis is just an EDGE phone, the Orbit has W-LAN b/g.
