Game of Thrones creator and FromSoftware may be working on 'Elden Ring,' focuses on Norse mythology

What you need to know

  • Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin says he's working with a Japanese developer on a game.
  • The title is supposedly called Great Rune and may be revealed during E3 2019.
  • Just like God of War, Great Rune focuses on Norse mythology and the apocalypse.

Updated June 7, 2019: According to a new leak, the game is called "Elden Ring" and is coming to Xbox One and other platforms.

A few weeks ago, reports emerged that Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin was working with Japanese developer FromSoftware on a new open-world game. While these reports were unverified, Martin himself later confirmed that he had consulted on the development of a game with a Japanese studio. Immediately after that announcement, a number of outlets published alleged details about the project. According to GamesRadar+, the collaboration between the two won't be set in the world of Game of Thrones, but will instead focus on Norse mythology like the new God of War. The outlet added that the game is called "Great Rune."

Great Rune may be officially unveiled during Microsoft's E3 2019 media briefing. Since Sony isn't in attendance this year, there's the possibility that this is an Xbox One console exclusive. Considering that June is right around the corner, we won't have to wait too long to find out.

FromSoftware is known for crafting stellar experiences, like the recently-released Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. In our review, we said the following.

It's definitely harder than Dark Souls, but the sense of satisfaction you feel after defeating powerful titans is a reward in itself. The more you play, the stronger you become. The story and gameplay take you in new directions, but Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice's difficulty may limit its appeal. Unlike previous FromSoftware games, it lacks multiplayer so you can't summon allies to help you.

Are you interested in Great Rune? Let us know. Hopefully the combat will be similar to Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice because it adds another layer of depth to any experience. It'll be interesting to see how it stands up to God of War and Ubisoft's rumored Assassin's Creed game which also explores the concept of Ragnarök.
