Just Cause 4 achieves 4K resolution on Xbox One X, further visual improvements incoming (update)

Updated March 7, 2019: Today, the developer released a new patch for Just Cause 4 which apparently uses checkerboarded rendering on Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro. The water quality, vegetation, and other aspects of the title have been improved as well.

The Just Cause series consists of over-the-top third-person action games which revolve around destroying everything in your path. While the titles may not have the best stories, they're a lot of fun to play because the goal is to constantly blow up buildings and vehicles. Just Cause 4 continues this tradition.

Whenever a new "AAA" game launches, many customers want to know which console version is the best. It's become a competition of sorts for many. According to an analysis by Digital Foundry, the game achieves native 4K resolution on Xbox One X but uses dynamic scaling to lower the resolution to maintain thirty frames per second (FPS) performance. The PlayStation 4 Pro version has a maximum resolution of only 1440p and it usually sticks to 1080p. This gives it a considerably blurry appearance when compared to the Xbox One X version on a 4K display.

It's great to see that developer are pushing the visuals when it comes to Microsoft's new console. Despite this, the graphics aren't that great in Just Cause 4, but Square Enix today promised a fix. The next patch to hit Xbox One system will address the following concerns.

  • Fixes to some motion blur rendering issues.
  • Add a motion blur toggle to the options menu.
  • Improvements to the overall visual quality on Xbox One.
  • Fixes to some texture mapping issues.
  • Other graphical improvements such as smoother vegetation transitions.
  • Lighting updates to some cutscenes.

Hopefully these changes will make the title look even better. It's unclear when the patch will hit, but it seems like it'll be out some time in December.
