The Outer Worlds press-only gameplay reveals choices and pig tumors

What you need to know

  • The Outer Worlds is an upcoming first-person shooter from Obsidian Entertainment.
  • The game is coming to Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4.
  • The title is being published by Private Division because the deal was made before Microsoft acquired the team.
  • The Outer Worlds is part of Xbox Game Pass.

The Outer Worlds from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division allows you to navigate Halcyon, a futuristic space colony, in a visually-lush single-player role-playing game. The title lets you develop a character over time based on your playstyle. The game can apply features to your character based on reoccurring traits and or flaws. The end result is someone who has unusual quirks.

You can customize your weapons and ammunition to suit your needs, or circumvent combat through stealth tactics or other means to resolve conflicts. Your character's qualities will influence the gameplay over the course of the story, shaping your challenges, your interactions with other people who want to join your crew, and even the final stages of the game.

At E3 2019, Obsidian revealed a behind-closed-doors look at the game to members of the press. The gameplay focused on choices and how futuristic corporations are cutting corners to meet food shortages. This weekend, the team released the footage on YouTube so that everyone can enjoy it. There's a lot to love about Obsidian's new game because it looks like Fallout: New Vegas in space.
