GasBuddy is a nice Windows Phone 8 app that lets you find gas stations and real-time gas prices from the comfort of your Windows Phone. You can search by keyword or by your current location. The app was recently updated to version three to bring a handful of tweaks and performance fixes as well as Windows Phone 8 support.

The update also brings lockscreen support and offers randomly changing wallpaper images. We'll reserve judgment on the quality of the wallpapers once we see more but the first seems a little on the dark side.

Windows Phone Central App Roundup: Gas Mileage Apps

With the Holiday Season in full swing, many find themselves traveling more. Last week our Windows Phone App Roundup dealt with Windows Phone apps for the air traveler. This week we focus on Windows Phone apps designed for those who stick to the road for their travel needs. In particular, gas mileage apps.

These apps can help you find the nearest gas station, track your car's performance, track the cost of fuel, and some will even help you keep track of routine service on your car. We picked a handful of apps out from the Windows Phone Store that jumped off the page at us for this weeks roundup.

The Windows Phone app GasBuddy has been updated to version 2.0. GasBuddy helps find the best gas prices in your location and allows you to report gas prices for others to take advantage of.

The updated version brings:

  • Directions provided by BING Maps
  • Easier gas price posting
  • An auto completion feature for searches
  • User awards/achievements
  • Improved GPS performance

The update also includes the customary bug fixes/performance improvements.

GasBuddy has a free membership option that allows you report local gas prices. In doing so, you earn points that can be redeemed for chances to win free gas. If you don't want to sign up for a membership, you can still use the Windows Phone app to find the best gas prices in your area. You can search for gas prices by city, state, zip code or just tap the gas pump icon to pull up prices based on your current location.

We've only tinkered with GasBuddy for a short time but it looks like an easy way to help save gasoline costs.  GasBuddy currently covers the U.S. and Canadian markets and is a free, ad-supported app that you can grab here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Thanks, Jed, for the tip!

Though there is an official GasBuddy app in the Marketplace it lacks quite a lot of features. In that sense, we're always glad to see 3rd parties step up and fill the void.

Gas Up Free is now available for you to get started on finding the lowest gas prices around you. The app is laid out quiet nicely and features individual gas stations that are pinnable to your Start screen. That's pretty cool if you have a favorite station and want to keep tabs on the price. The app will update once a day and you have as many tiles as you want (one for home, one for work, one for near the mistress). Other features include:

  • search with current location
  • create your own searches
  • create favorites
  • sorting option
  • show route
  • report prices
  • visual decision support

Not bad. Our only complaints are you cannot switch between km and miles and the search radius is not selecting, meaning you're stuck with the default. Other than those minor things though, it's a pretty solid app and the Live Tiles make it an easy sell. You can of course login to your GasBuddy account through this too, making the official app less than necessary.

You can pick up Gas Up Free here in the Marketplace (ad supported) or opt for the ad-free experience, which will set you back $1.99 .
