A recent update to WhatsApp replaced its Status messages with its take on Snapchat Stories. As you'd expect, replacing one of the popular chat app's longtime features with something wholly different prompted some backlash from users. In response, WhatsApp is bringing back text statuses, but in a slightly different spot.

WhatsApp's text statuses are coming back

While WhatsApp is keeping the new Snapchat-like Status feature in place, you'll soon be able to set away messages and other text statuses again through the app's About screen. In a statement to TechCrunch, WhatsApp explains:

We heard from our users that people missed the ability to set a persistent text-only update in their profile, so we've integrated this feature into the 'About' section in profile settings. Now, the update will appear next to profile names anytime you view contacts, such as when creating a new chat or looking at Group info. At the same time, we're continuing to build on the new Status feature that gives people fun and engaging ways to share photos, videos and GIFs with their friends and family throughout their day.

In speaking with TechCrunch, WhatsApp says that the feature will make its way to Android next week, and iPhone soon. There's no specific mention of Windows Phone, but text statuses have already been spotted in the beta version of the app, so it likely won't be long before they make their way to the full version.
