In an interview with The Game Business, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick covered a wide range of topics, including AI, Roblox, RAM shortages, and more.
But he was also asked about Xbox’s new CEO, Asha Sharma, who is stepping into the role following Phil Spencer’s retirement after a long tenure at Microsoft.
Zelnick had some encouraging words for the new Xbox lead, so here’s what he had to say.
Article continues belowIn the interview, Christopher Dring asks Zelnick for his thoughts on Asha Sharma, noting that “she’s new to the industry. She’s not a gamer, and it’s triggered a conversation around whether those things are important for the role.”
Zelnick responds with clear encouragement for the new Xbox lead:
Well, first of all, I I don’t I don’t think the newly appointed head of Xbox needs any advice from me. So, let’s just start there... This highly accomplished executive who’s done just great without ever having met me. I’m going to bet on her continuing to do great.
Take-Two CEO - Strauss Zelnick
Perhaps refreshing for some to see such a candid and positive take on the situation, avoiding any drama, as we all know too well the gaming side of the internet blew up over concerns of Sharma not being a gamer, with many (non-Xbox fans, I might add) being quite unkind online.
Zelnick does go on to expand slightly, shifting toward his broader view of leadership:
"With all that said, look, our recipe for success around here is be the most creative, be the most innovative, be the most efficient, and you’d want to study the dynamics of the business… the individual you mentioned in fact has operated successfully in any number of different businesses… I can’t imagine she wouldn’t be examining the underlying dynamics of the business and then you know lean into them but at the end of the day what drives success in our business is making the best entertainment."
Well, that’s all that was said for now, and as I said, it’s nice for such a candid take, and I’m sure Sharma will appreciate the backing of Take Two’s CEO.
🎮 What are your thoughts on Zelnick's comments?
I’d argue it’s far too soon to judge Asha Sharma in her role at Xbox. However, her comments so far have been reassuring and have given me a bit of cautious optimism.
With that said, I’ll hand it over to you.
So let’s hear it. What are your thoughts on Zelnick’s comments about Asha Sharma? Are they too candid, or would you have preferred something a bit juicier?
