Gestures Beta allows you to interact with your Windows Phone in an entirely new way

Sure, you can use Glance to view incoming notifications without unlocking your phone, but what about using your device without actually interacting with the touchscreen? That's where Gestures Beta comes in. With the latest utility from Microsoft, you can automatically answer a call by picking up your phone and putting it to you ear, and much more.

As demonstrated in the video above, there are several features that are available with Gestures Beta, like:

  • Answer a call by picking up your phone and putting it to you ear
  • Mute your mic during a call by placing the phone on a flat surface with the display facing down
  • Put the call on speaker by placing the phone on a flat surface with the display facing up
  • Silence the phone by flipping it display down (if not in active call).

This is the first release of the client, so it is likely that more features will make their way as updates roll in. Do note that you need to restart your phone after installation to be able to use the feature. Also, Microsoft mentions that devices like Lumia 635, Lumia 630 and Lumia 530 have limited functionality.

Windows Phone fans, what do you think of Gestures Beta? Let us know what functionality you'd like to see in upcoming versions in the comments.

  • Pretty much like Harmattan!
  • These types of apps are needed to make the OS grow faster..!! Today we can say "Hats Off Microsoft"..!! Hope it's a stock thing in WP 10..!!
  • +1020
  • yes!
  • the guy in the video was talking to an Alien
  • BREAKING NEWS :: Microsoft found aliens before NASA,,ESA,, ISRO or any others..!!
  • 2 years later, BREAKING NEWS: Apple invents aliens
  • *2 years later--BREAKING NEWS :: We(Apple) invented aliens before Microsoft found them on Skype..!!
  • Also, starting tomorrow, we will have a patent on gray and green faces, so all your alien are belong to us.

  • Friday Samsung will release 10 different shades of gray
  • Samsungs state to that: Designed for aliens.
  • Was that the prequel to 50 Shades of Grey?
  • 49 shades of grey
  • Lol... So true
  • THAT'S PERFECT!!
  • I hope they will include it in windows 10 x_x
  • who aliens?
  • One feature is still missing -  The call should end automatically after putting back in pocket..
  • And the phone knows it's going in a pocket how? Since changing to vertical position with sensor next to another surface (such as your ear) answers the call, and face down during call mutes mic, what position change/sensor reading would you suggest for ending call? I'd hate to put phone down during call, go to speaker, and when I pick it up and hold it to my ear again, I hang up the call.
  • I usually have the phone upside down with screen facing thigh in my pocket. So maybe that would work.
  • Yup. It's an easy thing to program an app to perform a certain action when the phone is turned vertically upside down and pressed against a thigh. I suspect they were trying to provide functionality for the majority of users... When you choose to respond to a ringing phone, you want to quickly answer it or silence it. If you are having a phone conversation with someone, the last thing you want to have happen is for your phone to misinterpret a gesture as something that should disconnect the call. Hopefully, you'll be engaged enough in the call to deliberately choose when to end the call (such as happens when you tap "end call").
  • I put mine in my back pocket often, so maybe sensing a quick twirking motion while pressed up against the inside of the jeans back pocket would do the trick............  .........
  • LOL. I don't think there is a pressure sensor. Besides what happens if I'm squeezing the phone between shoulder and ear so I have 2 hands free for a minute? I disconnect the call? GET OVER IT. Microsoft wisely opted to not have your calls disconnected when you twirked your phone.
  • Omg! This is so amazing ! Now mixview for winphone and i am a happy man !
  • Hold your horses, this is still in beta, doesn't work if you pick your phone from pocket.
  • Yes, it works from the pocket, I just tested that. It uses proximity sensor and probably accelerometer or compass. Absent proximity sensor is the reason it doesn't work on 53x and 63s models.
  • Might be. But it didn't work properly for 520.
  • Can't download it... Anyone an idea why not?
    (using HTC 8s)
  • Only for Lumia phones...
  • using HTC 8s
    that's why...
  • Luckily my HTC already got a few of these functions... But that's only a few (only 1 I think...) the sh*t up(!)...
  • Nokia (Microsoft) devices only.
  • This is awesome, I've been waiting for the "flip over to silence" functionality . Microsoft is on a roll.
  • Flip to silence had been available since long.
  • To silence an incoming call after it began ringing, yes, but not to silence the entire phone
  • I tried doing that, it silences the incoming call, not the entire phone, for upcoming calls.
  • I know it used to work for me at one point to flip the phone to silence it on an incoming calls.  Not sure if it did it for all incoming calls.  You may not want that anyway unless there is a time limit like an hour.  I just tested my phone but the flip to silence didn't even work.  It is probably because I am up to date with the OS updates, but stuck on Black firmware because of Verizon.  Anyway, I am installing Gestures now.
  • Doesn't work on my Lumia 928.  Do we need Cyan installed?  Thanks for Verizon! It installed the first time.  I rebooted, then the App wouldn't even load.  Uninstalled and reinstalled.  Rebooted again and the app installed, but still not automatically answering the call.  I can only assume Cyan is needed.
  • Cyan is definitely needed. It's a wp8.1 exclusive xD
  • According to the windows phone store site it's compatible with wp8 and wp8.1
  • Was already available under audio.
  • Hahahahaha..... And... Hahahahahaha ....LOL
  • you have it
  • Great thing is it works really well.
  • Sounds useful! Hopefully it works well.
  • McLaren technology on my 1020!!
  • LOL..!! On many 520s too..!!
  • #520stillno.1
  • You don't have a 41mp camera sensor though:p
  • McLean sure, these features were to come on McLaren
  • Cool feature! I would like to have it unlock the device as a pick it up, or take it out of my pocket. Instead of pushing the unlock button.
  • Seems like that could be accidentally triggered really easy.
  • That functionality is already baked in: disable your phone's password.
  • Ok, just assume for a while that this feature exist. Then what if u jump from 2 feet height. I think ur phone will act like u put out this from ur pocket and cheers! It is unlocked
  • Or even nice..If someone steals it from your pocket..!! He would be a happy man..!! LOL Nice for thieves..!!
  • If only phones had proximity sensors on the front of them that could tell the phone whether its covered or not.
  • It should of course work with more than just the motion sensor. Much of the functionality is there already. If you take the phone out of your pocket shortly after you get a text message the screen will turn on and show the toast notification. Im guessing this uses ambient light sensor and accelerometer.
I just want to unlock my phone in the same way..
Also, if I have a password on my phone, it should unlock to the password screen, not the homescreen.
Mine locks only asks for password if it has been locked for 30 minutes. Something I find very convenient...
  • Yeah... That will be cool...
  • I guess double tap on screen can save the pain of pushing the unlock button. I use it all the time.
  • But the Glove Sensitivity unlocks it in the pocket itself..!!
  • Nice!! Lumia 920 user here and I'm thrilled to have new features on such an older device
  • Don't we already have flip to silence?
  • Yup. That's already there.
  • This is place face down to put on silent. Flip to silence is like oh crap, my ringer is on.
  • Both are the same. The phone rings, you place your phone face down and the ringtone is silenced.
  • Nope. This one puts the whole phone on silent if it's laying face down on your desk.
  • Ain't in silent mode when he put the phone facedown, it was in mute
  • It didn't work very well on my 920.
  • Does this works with headsets On????
  • it's not even tuesday and lots of stuff rollin out today!
  • what's special with turesday?
  • Lets you download if you have 8.0 but it says it doesn't work with this version on windows phone when you open the app.
  • Interesting..
  • Great news everywhere!
  • Now testing..
  • My HTC trophy had this years ago. First thing I missed when I got my Lumia 928
  • But not on HTC 8x :-(
  • Actually the M8 has nearly all of this already.
  • I think my Tilt and Tilt2 had these in Windows Mobile, as well. :)
  • Sounds like leftover features from McLaren. Cool nonetheless!
  • That's cool
  • Now microsoft is doing their stuff! GO MSFT! I'm excited!!
  • Early Christmas woooo!!!
  • Something to show my lagadroid friends
  • Dude,Android has had these features for a while now..your friends wont be impressed
  • Even if your friends have an old Windows Mobile device around, they'll already have it. :D
  • +1520
  • FTW
  • Find The West?
  • •Put the call on speaker doesn't work straight right now. Need some improvements there, the others functionalities works great! Thanks MS.
  • True that. I have been unable to put my 1020 on speaker through this app. But rest of the features work as desired. Thumps up MICROSOFT!
  • Same here, left feedback. Had to pick up the bottom of my phone a little to trigger it, a quick update to the tolerance on the code should fix it.

  • Did you send them your feedback?
  • me too, not working on 525.
  • This is awesome what a nice Xmas surprise from MSFT :)
  • Wow, just wow! The best thing about windows phone is, my Lumia 920 is almost 2 years all, and I'm still getting surprises in terms of new apps and features every other week!
  • Well tats where windows beats android.. At least for me..
  • Wow, someone actually enjoying their phone rather than complaining about things on here? +1520 for you!
  • I'm surprised my 525 supports it...
  • All the models listed with limited support have 512MG of RAM, whereas the 525 has 1GB. That'd be my guess as to why. :-)
  • I'm guessing it has more to do with the lack of proximity/light sensors in the mentioned models.
  • Bingo. Models mentioned missing necessary sensors.
  • Ah, yes. That makes even more sense. :-)
  • Pun intended?
  • No, dang it. I wish it had been! :-)
  • I liked all the gestures... but the only problem I see is... what if the flip down to mute doesn't work? I will start to talk and the person on ther line will hear everything... :( lol
  • I thought about this as well. Would suck if the app crashed and they heard what you were saying. But even with regular mute, I always make sure by talking to them and seeing if they respond. I never trust mute even with my office land line. Always a good idea to test.
  • It should have a little sound, like a knock sound effect to say it's muted. The mic is muted so the recipient won't hear it anyway.
  • sounds great :))
  • Installs a runs fine on L1520 with dev preview. Still have to test it out.
  • Wow, this is amazing.
  • ^_^ been longing for this since I saw it on those S3 Android phones 2 years ago! We catching up Windows Phone! This makes up for the feature-less upgrade of the glance screen they just gave us.
  • I wonder if this will work on my ATIV S.
  • How silly of me. Of course not.
  • it's a shame, Ativ S user here :/
  • No 8X, either.
  • not on my 8xt either. i should know better than to think anything good would come to this device. i still haven't got the 8.1 update that was apparently released last week.
  • Silly you!  Of course not - Microsoft apparently only cares about Lumia phones now.  Us Samsung users are going to be left in the dust.
  • I don't know MS plz release a proper feature no betas tired with buggy software like lockscreen beta.
  • If lock screen of death lol
  • They want as much open feedback as they can, it really helps development (as long as it keeps getting updated...)
  • Then don't use it until it's out of beta? The lockscreen app is just plain bad IMO. This actually seems useful.
  • any news about upcoming nokia? pls guys
  • Unfortunately, it's not called "Nokia" anymore .... =(
  • nokia lumia lol
  • One more try left.
  • Microsoft Lumia is the name. :)
  • Man!!
  • Great!!!!!!
  • Awesome!!
  • Installing now!
  • Cool, this is some android functionality I've been waiting for ages for.
  • "Attentive Phone" on HTC One M8.
  • All the features are working in my 630
  • I think he is talking about upcoming featured which has limited functionality for 630, 530......etc
  • How is it possible? My girlfriend and I both have Lumia 630 and it doesn't work for any of us!
  • Is pretty cool...It would be great to have a gesture to end call too!
  • Not working on my Icon?  I've rebooted my phone...
  • Same here!
  • Yeah I've only got 2 options for this :/
  • Close app then open it again and see if you have 4 options now.
  • No dice on my Icon....
  • Still doesn't show any more
  • I only get a couple options on my 810.  I'm guessing it might have something to do with firmware. At least you can still hope your Icon gets new firmware. I don't get even that much.
  • Good news :) keep them coming
  • Works great, thanks Microsoft :)!!!!
  • Great! I have a 630 :(
  • K
  • केके
  • excellent !!!
  • The small things like this I miss by not owning a Microsoft device anymore. Still happy with the M8. Less buggy that my 925 and 920
  • Doesn't answer a call on Nokia Lumia 928. I'll keep testing
  • Same....none of the features work on my 928 with 8.1 DP.  In the Gestures Beta settings, I only have the settings to Answer incoming calls when I raise & Toggle speaker mode when placing phone faceup.  Time to send feedback....  :(
  • You probably need Cyan?
  • Love the commercial!! Lolzzz
  • blah blah bla ba bah blah ba?
  • DOES NOT WORK ON ICON WITH DP 8.1
  • I wondered the same. I guess without glance it can't support gestures. Not hardware supported.
  • It does. Lumia 735 has no glance also and auto answer works. As soon as I put my Lumia to my my ear it picks up the call. So glance has nothing to do with gestures. And yes: I like it.
  • Interesting. Unsure why the Icon is an exception.
  • Because Verizon.
  • Needs cyan. Verizon yaaaay, NOT!
  • Its raining Apps..... woh woh
  • McLaren features live on...
  • Awesome feature for Lumia devices, but again MS won't promote it.....
  • Great app
  • I live in a dog shelter. This will improve my life a little.
  • Now MS get us clash of clans plz
  • Just play AOE:CS, clash of clans is a copy of this game.
  • Excelent! I'm sure all of us would love to see more features like this on our phones. Keep working this Ms
  • Its an excellent app, working flawlessly in my Lumia 520....
  • I guess the "teacher" voice from Charlie Brown has a copywriters seal on it so they used the voice of an android.  lol.
  • So like HTC one m8 or naw?
  • Since the M8 already has most of these features, I'm not even going to try out this beta on it.
  • I was waiting for this egarly. Loving it..!!
  • Awesome! Great to have these new things
  • App will prompt you to restart. Do so, then open app again. I only saw TWO options on first start. I closed app, started again, and voila... All 4 options appeared. Odd, but ok now.
  • Same, makes me wonder if there were more than 4 options under that dialog box.
  • I take it they are using their secret private restricted API which for some reason they don't want other devs to have access to...because you know, somebody may make a useful app for windows phone for a change?
  • It's really nice :) Loved it :)
  • Don't the HTC 8x have these already? I had one before and knew it had flip to silence, and toggle to speakerphone on call.
  • And there's that word BETA again....
  • The app isn't final, they want feedback for more gestures.
  • superb app/...goood ap fora low budget mobiles
  • This has so much potential!
  • I tested "Silence the phone by flipping it display down (if not in active call).". I played podcast and flip back it to table top. Sound still goes on. Why?
  • It's for silencing incoming calls, not muting the phone.
  • With the Lumia 630, 635 and 530 having no ambient sensor, placing the phone near to the ear will result to nil hence limited functionality...
  • From an angle, that looked like Jony Ive using a Lumia :D
  • Works fine on 620.
