Motorola has no plans for WinMo 6.5

This should come as very little surprise to, well, anyone, but Motorola is out of the Windows Mobile game for a while. Phonescoop's Eric Zeman is reporting on a roundtable discussion with the Moto gang:

When asked directly, Motorola's Christy Wyatt said that Motorola is waiting for the next generation of platform software from Microsoft before it will begin making Windows Mobile devices again. It will not be adopting nor making any devices running Windows Phone 6.5.

So there you have it, folks. Don't expect to see anything new from Motorola until Windows Mobile 7, if not later.

  • No worries on this one. Motorola hasn't produced a decent phone in eons, so I'm not even sweating this announcement.
  • In the next 5 months you will be seeing a number of new Motorola phones that are great. I believe Motorola has finally gotten their act together and started making good phones. I think that it was a good idea for them to focus on one platform instead of the whole spectrum. Ask yourself if you were trying to make a new name for a well-known business which would you choose? Android is new, connected to Google, and I believe competes with the Iphone much more than Windows Mobile. Things are looking up for Motorola.
  • Where can I get that funky bird wallpaper? It doesn't seem to be there on newer WinMo builds.
  • The Q9h was a great smartphone.
  • When Motorola killed off on of their best phones of all time (The Q series), they signed their death papers. Motorola won't be around in the cell phone market when WinMo 7 releases.
