Windows Phone News

Recently, Rogers became one of the first carriers in Canada to acquire the Lumia 830 'affordable flagship' smartphone. At the time, we noted that this did not preclude other carriers from getting the phone as well, which is great for those who have a strong distaste for Rogers.

Windows Phone Central has now confirmed with people familiar with the matter that Bell is slated to launch the Lumia 830 on October 15. Unfortunately, pricing information is not available, though we have seen internal references for the launch to verify its authenticity.

Nokia has been ordered by a court ruling in Mexico to pay damages and cover costs for consumers who purchased defective mobile devices, prior to the company supporting Windows Phone and Microsoft acquiring the handset and services division. However, both Nokia and Microsoft have denied they are liable for these new charges.

The Lumia 530 is being position as one of the most affordable Windows Phones available, despite growing completion from the likes of BLU and others. T-Mobile announced back in July that it would be stocking the ultra-budget phone, although no pricing or release date was given with only a generic "later this year" promise.

Windows Phone Central now expects the phone to launch in mid-October at a $69 off-contract price.

Microsoft is hosting a media event tomorrow in New Delhi, where the Redmond-based giant is scheduled to unveil the Lumia 830. While no details were provided as to whether the Lumia 730 will also be announced at the event, a tweet from Nokia India today suggests that an official launch for the selfie-focused device may be on the cards after all.

It looks like Microsoft and their Nokia Lumia 830 are getting ready to begin hitting markets worldwide. An upcoming press conference in India may reveal the time and pricing for that phone and its sibling the Lumia 730 sometime tomorrow.

Likewise, we are now hearing from one of our sources that the Lumia 830 for AT&T should be hitting shelves the first week of November. This time falls in line with Microsoft's Stephen Elop's previous ' by the holidays' declaration for the US carrier.

Nokia India, the subsidiary of Microsoft Mobile, has sent out press invites for media event in New Delhi scheduled for October 1, 2014. While the invite does not specify the plans for the afternoon, from what we know, the Lumia 830 will be launched at the event. Again, there's no price indication and the rumors put the price to be anywhere from ₹21,000-30,000 (US$340-480). The Lumia 820 was priced at ₹26,000, and that could be a pretty good price point for this 'affordable flagship' phone, although I'll sheepishly confess that a higher price tag for the device wouldn't be a huge negative.

A few weeks back it was announced that the Canada would finally be picking up a new Lumia, specifically the Lumia 830, after what seems like an eternity of no interesting Windows Phones. Although we knew Canada was getting the new Lumia 830, the carrier and release date was a mystery. Today, we now know at least one of those, the operator.

Rogers is the lucky – and perhaps obvious – candidate for the Lumia 830 and indeed, stores are evidently already putting dummy demo units out for customers to take for a test ride. Reader of the site Mike R. swung by his local Rogers and found this Lumia 830 demo unit available for some public fondling. In the photos that Mike supplied us, you can see some of the Rogers marketing material behind the Lumia 830.

For a few months now, the team behind Rowi Twitter have been teasing us with their forthcoming email client dubbed 'Maestro'. Running with the slogan "A better mail experience for Windows Phone 8.1", the app looks to shake up the native client on Windows Phone with a new, aesthetically pleasing one. In addition, we can expect a few more email tools for the addicts out there.

Today, the team has announced that the Maestro app for Windows Phone 8.1 is finally launching this Monday at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET). The app is considered a 'preview, so do not expect every feature to be enabled, as this is more about the core experience. Over the coming months, the team will add planned features and work with the community to improve the experience.

Following yesterday's Preview update for Windows Phone 8.1.1 to build 14176, the Lumia Cyan update was also unblocked for many users who had the Preview for Developers installed.

Starting earlier today, Microsoft has confirmed that "100 more Windows Phone device/operator combos" are now getting the Lumia Cyan update. We confirmed that these are in addition to a large batch released yesterday, and it applies for those on the Preview for Developer program who previously could not get the Cyan update.

80% of India respondents are on Cyan, while only 47% of those in the US can say the same

Microsoft had a big day yesterday, finally releasing a new preview version of their 8.1.1 Windows Phone operating system. The update is only for those using the popular Preview for Developers early-access program. Besides improving performance and fixing bugs, the update also unblocked the awaiting Lumia Cyan firmware for many more users, though not all. The question we were curious about is exactly how many of you are now on Lumia Cyan.

After ten thousand votes casts, we now have a definitive, if not surprising, answer.

Back in Berlin a few weeks ago, Microsoft made clear their current suite of Bing apps, including Weather, News, Finance, Travel and Health + Fitness, would be adopting MSN as the brand. Microsoft has already phased out Bing from the apps in previous updates back in April. The change is seen to separate Bing search from Microsoft's news and information offerings, which evidently fit better under a retooled MSN homepage.

This morning, we are getting reports from users that the Finance app is displaying an in-app message revealing that the name Bing Finance will be no more in the "coming days". (We have been able to reproduce the message ourselves and you can see the screenshot in the lead photo) Instead, the app will be titled MSN Money, although, like the current Bing apps, the app name itself is only going to be 'Money' on the phone (Paul Thurrott reported as much a few weeks ago on WinSupersite).
