Microsoft's Gears of War team changes name from Black Tusk Studios to The Coalition

Microsoft still isn't talking about the next game in the Gears of War shooter series for the Xbox One, but today the team that's working on the game is now under a new name. The Vancouver-based team formerly known as Black Tusk Studios has been rebranded with the new name The Coalition.

Rod Fergusson, the head of the newly renamed team, explained the reasons why it is now called The Coalition:

"In short, The Coalition speaks to who we are as a team, and what it is we're working on. A coalition is a team of diverse individuals working together for a common purpose, a concept that we feel describes our studio quite well. Fans will also recognize the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) from Gears of War lore. When people hear 343 Industries, they associate it with Halo; when they hear Turn 10 Studios, they know that's who makes Forza. Moving forward, when you hear The Coalition, we want you to think of Gears of War."

Microsoft bought the rights to the Gears of War franchise from its creators and former developers at Epic Games in January 2014, and the company also revealed Black Tusk was working on a new game in the franchise for the Xbox One. Recent rumors, along with a video leak, point to Microsoft also working on a remastered version of the original Gears of War game for the Xbox One.
