Nokia releases The Dark Knight Rises: Prologue app for Lumia phones

Before the movie...

Nokia and the Dark Knight Batman franchise have been buddy-buddy for the last few months and with the movie finally winding down in theaters, it’s about time to add a prologue, no?

We mentioned the existence of the Prologue app when the companion Origins comic was released as it was specifically referenced within that app. The app itself is just a mini-comic dealing with some events before the movie.  Actually, it’s a bit more than that as it’s called a “motion comic”.

WP Central

A motion comic is basically an animated version of the comic, so it’s like a camera panning and scrolling for you, whizzing past the frames and adding a neat flair to the form.  It runs exceptionally smooth and the panning motion even extends to the menu selection, which is done very nicely. It also weighs in at 52MB. There is a ‘share’ function that is quite useless (it just broadcasts that you have the app) and there’s really not much else to it but it gets the job done and is overall, it is well made.

We should iterate that prologue won’t ruin the movie if you haven’t seen it yet—quite the opposite as it will further expand the story and give you some background details. Combined with the ‘Origins’ comic and you should have a nice expansion of TDKR universe.

Unfortunately with TDKR winding down, we’re betting this is the last app we’ll see on the series, which is a bit of a shame. Being one of the more unique tie ins and promotions with Windows Phone that we’ve seen lately (including the Lumia 710 back covers) we’re not sure if it actually sold anymore devices but it was certainly a nice bonus. Here are the other Dark Knight themed apps:

You can pick up TDKR: Prologue here in the Nokia Collection for Windows Phone.

Same here. I loved the movie though. Downloaded the app and I like it. Although, since TDKR is winding down, I am not sure if it will last on my device. Might remove it.

He said the MOVIE makes him think of Colorado, not the app. I assume he's referring to the tragic shooting at the Aurora, CO theater.

You have to wonder why Origins and Prologue weren't just added to the main "The Dark Knight Rises" app in updates.

Would've also liked to have seen The Dark Rises game app by Gameloft that was released for iOS on Xbox LIVE for Windows Phone.

The motion comic concept looks great and is an interesting way to display content. In the future, I'd like to see voice acting added.

My biggest complaint with this is that it is not a "prologue", but rather it is the first sequence of the movie, in comic book form. I was hoping for new material.

Just get a Nokia. Or spend a few minutes online and learn how to simply "hack" these apps onto your non Nokia device. My HTC radar runs apps from all oems. Plus don't ALL of them have some form of exclusive apps?! I love all the ones HTC has, that Nokia doesn't (gasp)!

Nice concept. It does give other developers ideas about bringing our favorite comics(Marvel rules) to our beloved platform.
