A new research paper details the efforts of a team at Stanford University who are looking to create a lithium battery that, if successful, could lead to much longer battery life for smartphones and tablets, but it could take several years for that research to yield practical products.
If Microsoft has its way, smartphone battery life could last up to a week at some point in the near future. That's the claim from a team member at Microsoft Research who stated this week that longer battery life can be obtained by making some software and design tweaks to current smartphones.

Sweet, sweet science is on its way to finding a cure for how lithium-ion batteries (like the one in your phone) lose their ability to hold a charge over time. Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley, Brookhaven, and Stanford have found a pattern to the erosion that happens at both anode and cathode ends of the battery, when previously it was assumed the erosion was uniform. The salt that forms at the anode side and the metallic erosion on the cathode side both latch onto microscopic imperfections, kind of like how a water droplets latch onto a piece of dirt to begin forming rain or a snowflake.
If you’re still considering picking up a Surface Pro 3, but the processor choice has you confused, you can cross one concern off of your list: battery life. It was only a few days ago that we learned exactly which Intel Core i3 and i7 processors would come with the device, greatly impacting everything from clock speed to graphics.
The rule of thumb in computing is that the faster and more powerful the processor is, the more battery it will consume. But not so fast.
While the battery life in our Windows Phone and Windows devices has improved dramatically over the years, there are still times when you need a little boost to make it through the day. The easy solution is finding an outlet and just plug in your Windows Phone or your Surface tablet.
However, when an outlet isn't available a portable, an external battery is a good option to have. RAVPower offers a nice assortment of external batteries and the RP-PB14 Xtreme is one of the beefiest batteries the company offers. The Xtreme battery sports a 2300mAh battery with LCD display and a ton of connection options.
The RAVPower Xtreme is a nice option to consider to cover a wide range of recharging needs but the size may take away from the portability of this battery.
The battery is probably the most talked about component of any smartphone, and the reading displayed on-screen is checked frequently just to analyse how much juice remains. Luckily, Windows Phone has pretty good battery management with Battery Saver Mode present just in case you need to squeeze that extra hour or so worth of use out of the device.
To help you out with monitoring your battery drain, there are a variety of apps available on the Windows Phone Store. This collection includes the gorgeous Battery Performance, which is currently available for free with myAppFree.

We love our smartphones, but one issue that might come up is battery life. If you’re a heavy user, you want to find ways to be able to use the phone as long as you can before needing to recharge. We have included 17 tips to extend your Windows Phone 8 battery life, but many of these tips involve turning off services and features. You decide which services you’re willing to let go to save juice. You don’t need to follow all of them, but following some will help extend the battery life on your Windows Phone 8 device.

Eagerly awaiting more details to emerge of the Lumia 929? Leakster 'Falorin' has you covered over on our community forum. A new photo of the unannounced Windows Phone in white has been leaked (see above for previously released render), as well as some information on the size of the battery. You're looking at an impressive 2510mAh power plant.
There are plenty of battery performance apps available for our Windows Phones. You can now add Battery to the list of Windows Phone 8 apps that can chart, track and keep you updated on how much life your Windows Phone battery has left.
But Battery will go a little further by offering shortcuts to key Windows Phone settings and the option to backup and share your battery performance data. It's one of the more feature rich battery performance apps in the Windows Phone Store and is easily worth the time to check out.
Nokia is reportedly preparing to launch the massive 6-inch Nokia Lumia 1520 this fall and Windows Phone Central can now bring you a little more information about the device.
Yesterday, EvLeaks claimed that the Lumia 1520 will “launch” on September 26th, though we understand that to be incorrect. The device is still planned to be announced on this date but it won’t launch until early November on AT&T. That makes much more sense as GDR3 is still being finalized and GDR2 hasn’t even finished rolling out yet.
As reported earlier, the phone will feature a 20 MP PureView camera (dual shot: 16 MP + 5 MP), Snapdragon 800 CPU, 32 GB of internal storage (microSD on the side for expansion) and a stellar 1080P HD display.
New screenshots reveal more on the Notification Center, actionable notifications and a Battery percentage option in Windows Phone 8.1
More information is coming forward regarding the forthcoming Windows Phone 8.1. This time, alleged screenshots from build 8.10.12166.0 were posted in the Windows Phone Central forums by user qXerro. Although we have not verified the screenshots (they can be easily faked), we can confirm that the information revealed by them is accurate for the upcoming Windows Phone overhaul due early next year. In fact, the grammar error suggests they are re-created.
In three screen captures, posted below, we can see more detail about the Notification center and sortable items in the App list in addition to a new battery display option.
If you’ve been loving your Microsoft Surface, but looking for battery life expansion – get excited. The long awaited Power Cover for the company’s line of tablet PCs is right around the corner. According to Paul Thurrott of WinSuperSite, the new accessory will be available “after the launch of [Microsoft’s] second-generation tablets”.
According to Microsoft’s support forums, a user complained that his Surface RT running the latest version of the company’s Windows 8.1 Consumer Preview was seeing an extreme power decrease while in standby mode. The user also noted that a driver known as “Microsoft UART V2” seemed to be causing the issue.
Microsoft’s support team contacted the user and requested he try switching his Bluetooth to on to save battery life. Right away, this seems to be an odd solution; turning on your Bluetooth radio should decrease your device’s battery life – not improve it. That being said, as soon as said user turned on his Bluetooth radio, his issue disappeared.
Packing a lot of power, the Brando Power Jacket is a nice solution for those who don't mind the extra bulk
Back a few weeks ago we reported on Brando bringing their seemingly high quality Power Jacket to market for the Lumia 920. The $37 item features a massive 2200mAh battery that “wraps around” your precious Nokia phone, allowing you go all day and night all at the price of extra size.
Our ‘Jacket showed up yesterday and we’ve been toying around with it. Verdict? For $37 we think it’s a good deal. There’s no doubt that it makes the Lumia 920 even huger but let’s be clear, this is for specific moments where you need extra power—traveling, long hikes, camping, power outages, etc. For that reason, it’s quite a nice addition.

Lots of power, fair price, decent build quality, nice look
Hello Friends is a useful and popular app for Windows Phone that enables consumers to add photos of contact stored on the device to the lockscreen and create the same mosaic effect that's utilised on the People Hub Live Tile. As well as being available for Windows Phone 8 (with the added lockscreen support), Hello Friends is also downloadable for Windows Phone 7 hardware, but lacks automatic functionality.
We previously looked at Hello Friends when it was bumped to version 3.0, but the app has been updated since so what's new in the latest release?
One of the biggest struggles the past few years if you were a part of the Windows Phone community was the lack of accessories compared to iOS and Android devices. While we still may not have the number and variety they have, we are slowly gaining extra accessories for devices like the Lumia 920 and HTC 8X. Today we’ve got one more for the Lumia crowd, a cover from Brando for your 920 that packs a 2200 mAh battery in the back.
Anyone who makes use of GPS functionality on a smartphone understands the impact such connectivity has on the limited battery supply that's packed inside the device. Unfortunately, we're not quite at the stage where 10,000mAh batteries are utilised, so Microsoft Research has been working on a cloud-powered GPS chip that will reportedly slash battery consumption on smartphones.
To help with the on going battle to monitor your Windows Phone 8 battery performance, enter the Windows Phone 8 appmyBattery.
myBattery will chart your batteries life cycle, note the percentage of power left and an estimated time left on the current charge. Live tile support includes the multiple sized tiles with the medium and small tile showing just the percentage left and the large tile showing both the percentage and time remaining.
Additional features include customizable colors for the battery meter and chart, charts cover not only daily use but overall use history and notifications in the lockscreen.
If it’s one thing people with smartphones like to know it’s the battery level. Double so if you’re the OCD type. Windows Phone 8 makes knowing such information a smidgen easier by displaying it under Settings without having to tap into the menu, but people still want more options.
The new (and oddly named) Windows Phone 8 appBattery Monitor with Voice Control just hit the Store and as you can probably tell from the title, it adds a new feature via speech...
Ever since Windows Phone 8 came out people have rightly wanted Skype. And so they got it, albeit a preview edition which in our vernacular reads ‘beta’ and beta it is.
Previously we’ve passed on a few tips for people who have had battery issues and we can absolutely confirm one of them now: Skype. No, it doesn’t occur often in fact this was our first time with the problem ever since Skype hit the Store a few weeks ago.
The issue started when we were updating some contact info and then we force synced our Microsoft Account under Settings (hold down the account, hit Sync). Only problem was, it wouldn’t stop ...ever.
