Xbox One owners spent over 1 billion hours gaming in January, PlayStation 4 still on top for sales

The Xbox One was behind Sony's PlayStation 4 in both hardware and software categories for the month of January, according to the NPD Group. As usual, neither Sony nor Microsoft revealed specific hardware or software sales numbers for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One during January 2016. However, Microsoft does not look to console sales as a measure of overall success, as it is in the process of converging the Xbox and Windows 10 platforms.

In a statement shared to Game Informer, Microsoft revealed that over 1 billion hours were played on the Xbox One last month:

"In January, the total number of hours spent gaming in one month on Xbox One worldwide surpassed 1 billion hours. Looking ahead to this spring, fans can enjoy more great games with the upcoming releases of 'Quantum Break,' 'Rocket League' and 'Tom Clancy's The Division.' We can't thank our fans enough for their continued support and passion for Xbox, and we're looking forward to bringing more of the games and experiences our fans want most in 2016."

In terms of game sales in the U.S, NPD says Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops III was number one in January, followed by Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K16, Star Wars Battlefront and Fallout 4.
