The OG Xbox Lives: Reverse-engineered dashboard brings the 2001 "Console Experience" to PC
The original Xbox dashboard has been rebuilt using retail code and now runs on PC, offering a nostalgic console-like experience with support for manually added games.
In a weird twist of events, somehow, the Original Xbox dashboard returned... TeamUIX has reverse-engineered and reconstructed Xbox’s original dashboard, and it’s now usable across Windows, Linux, and Mac.
It’s still early days for the project, but it’s already worth a look. One user, @dtoxmilenko on X (formerly Twitter), has shown it off well, even managing to link their Steam games to the dashboard.
It’s worth pointing out that this isn’t just a recreation of the Original Xbox dashboard. It’s been fully rebuilt using retail Xbox dashboard code and adapted to run on PC.
Article continues belowIt’s also not just a launcher. It does include one, but the goal here is to recreate the full console experience, not just give you a way to launch games.
That said, it doesn’t work like a typical PC launcher. You’ll need to manually add your own games, and from what I can tell, that involves tools like something called Title Maker, which was mentioned by @dtoxmilenko.
In my time with it, it did still feel very much like early access, something the team developing it does mention on their website, so it is to be expected. If you do try it for yourself, you can expect some bugs and performance issues, but it is still a fun hit of nostalgia and definitely worth checking out.
And a fun hit of nostalgia is just what it gave me, reminding me of when I first got the Original Xbox when I was younger, and remembering just how iconic the dashboard felt and just how different it was from what you got with the GameCube or PlayStation 2 at the time.
Enough about me, though; otherwise, I’ll end up ranting about my love for the old days. Instead, I’d love to hear from you.
What do you think of this project? Is it something you’d actually try, or more of a novelty that’s fun to check out but not something you’d use long term?
