Microsoft announced the next entry to the renowned Gears of War franchise at its E3 2018 briefing, solely titled "Gears 5." Paired with two short teaser trailers, its reveal established the game's premise while detailing when to expect its arrival. Although the launch is still some time away, we've wrapped up everything announced so far.
Gears 5 campaign: Through a new lens
Following the events of Gears of War 4, the next title is set to continue to story of humanity's conflict with the otherworldly Locust forces. As a direct sequel, Gears 5 marks the return of several iconic series personas – including the quartet of Marcus Fenix, JD Fenix, Del Walker, and Kait Diaz. A new character named Fahz Chutani with a unique lancer variant has been discussed too, though details stop there.
While all five characters are expected to play large roles in Gears 5, the game's focus shifts to Kait as the main protagonist. Continuing on from prior events, its set to debut all-new themes, exploring Kait's heritage and Locust ties. The game's initial reveal shows Kait mourning the loss of a friend, causing her to break away from the team in search of answers.
As discussed by studio head at The Coalition, Rod Fergusson, Gears 5's story is set to span a wide variety of environments. Jungles, frozen tundras, and red deserts will feature, alongside the return of familiar locations.
It also appears that a wind-powered skiff will also be prominent in the main campaign. Fergusson claimed the team wanted to provide free movement and "open up the world," indicating some areas will be less linear. This skiff will be usable across various biomes, signaling that it will regularly appear throughout the story.
Gears 5 gameplay: 4K, HDR, 60 FPS
With only a brief cinematic at E3 2018, we're yet to see any Gears 5 gameplay. Expect the game to inherit mechanics from previous titles, including the heavy movement and tight gunplay series veterans expect. Both online and split-screen cooperative play has also been confirmed for a return.
Gears 5 will also sport a 4K resolution at 60 frames per second (FPS) with High Dynamic Range (HDR) across "every mode" – indicating a smooth, sharp experience across the complete package. Gears of War 4 featured this on Xbox One X, though players had to choose between 1080p at 60 FPS or 4K at 30 FPS across campaign and Horde mode. Built around Microsoft's latest flagship console, it appears the developer now aims to deliver both simultaneously.
Gears 5 release date, pricing, preorders
Like most big-budget games of this generation, Gears 5 is expected to cost $59.99 at launch across all platforms. The game will also be available with an Xbox Game Pass subscription like other first-party titles from Microsoft. In line with many of Microsoft's "games-as-a-service" titles, also expect regular updates and content drops in the months, or years, following release.
Once again, Gears 5 is set to release sometime in 2019. Are you looking forward to the game? Let us know your thoughts so far in the comments.
