Groove Music updated with layout tweaks and more on desktop and mobile

The Groove Music app has snagged a new update on both Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile today, bringing it up to version 3.6.1382.0. This latest release brings small tweak to the hamburger menu on desktop, while the mobile version has picked up some slight layout and navigation tweaks along with, puzzlingly, the ability to search for artists. Here's the full breakdown:

For desktop:

  • The app remembers the state of the hamburger across sessions (i.e. if you collapse it, it will stay collapsed across sessions).

For mobile:

  • You can now search for Artists within the app.
  • Fans reported that album art didn't properly show album art for FLAC files. We fixed that.
  • Added a manual sync option to Settings.
  • Select/unselect all now available when in selection mode.
  • New layout in the album detail page banner to allow you to read more of the details for your favorite albums.
  • Now you can navigate to the album page from the context menu for songs.
  • The modules in Explore and artist detail pages load from top to bottom to make the experience smoother.

The mention of artist search in the mobile app is a bit puzzling, as you could do that before the update and we haven't managed to spot any significant differences in this new version. Still, you can grab the latest update along with all of its tweaks at the Windows Store link below.

  • Can't wait to go back to windows mobile 10 as groove is a big step up from Xbox music.
  • Why does Microsoft suck so much. I have a Lumia 925, im gonna go iPhone 6s/7 or android s6/s7 unless things change in the next 6 months or so. What's ppls opinion on this?
  • Go for it boy if it is that what u want.
  • What's wrong with the 925?
  • He's a troll. He just said that he was switching from WM without giving any reason, then asks what do we think. He wants a reaction.
  • But he's right, microsoft's music app sucked as it was xbox music, and it still sucks. Why? Because its buggy, laggy, and the worst part, no real settings like eq or sound effects (standard at most apps 15 years ago), and music simply become unavailable from playlist, and you have to add everything again, thats the bug that I mostly hate, and its there since xbox music.
  • I'll give you the lack of settings but Groove Music is neither buggy (from my experience, at least not more so than the old music apps) nor laggy. Everything has been running smooth as butter for quite a few versions already.
  • Sometimes it takes up to a minute to start playing after selecting what you want to play. And since that last update, some songs stutter like a cracked CD when playing. It's a great improvement in terms of navigation and looks compared to Xbox o 8.1, but bugs are still there
  • Never had any of those issues.
  • Groove is definitely laggy like what one poster said music becomes unavailable on playlists. Groove made me go back to an iPhone. While I'm missing the live tiles and the fantastic UI, I cannot sacrifice a decent music player for those. Also Apple Music is so great unless it becomes available to Windows Mobile I don't see the point t in switching back. Ill get myself a backup windows phone. • He didn't say music app, he said Microsoft
  • Honestly, Microsoft isn't a music app maker since they shutdown Zune and sold off the unit that came with the purchase of Nokia devices and service group. People here love to complain. Use another music app or move on like you said, but don't come here trying to convince others to leave WP because when and if we're ready, we will leave.
  • "Microsoft is not a music software maker since they fired Zune team." Oh that's a real excuse huh? Well their decision was supposed to make development better not worse. What you said is something someone would say to reassure himself on his pathetic decisions.
  • That's why it is still a part an "INSIDER PREVIEW" OS, not even beta.
So, if you want to say sh't about the music app or the OS do it after W10M is out for everyone.
  • It's been a problem since Xbox Music days. I just got tired of waiting for a decent player. The alternatives in the store are the same experience as well Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Yea only issue I have is when my internet drops and I have to resign in which causes everything to restart but other than that no lag issues at all. I play nearly all 50,000 of my song on random haven't made a playlist that I use consistently kinda hard to choose from soooooo many songs
  • I don't about you but each fan has his own frustration when it comes to the OS. For one thing, I'll to see Microsoft goes OTA, hate being at the mercy of carriers for an update. Second I'll like to see capacitive buttons on the phone ( before you lash out at me, tell me how to get rid of a frozen app when the screen becomes unresponsive without using a soft reset then we can talk,) my L925 is getting old and I need a replacement.
  • Capacitive buttons also don't work if the phone freezes
  • I have a L925 and it is now better with the latest build. Some lagging occurs but it is tolerable and not too much unlike before.
  • I too have a 925, wanted to know how is the battery life on the latest build
  • Battery life have improved so much in last two builds.its good for heavy usage too .From my xperiance with l925 so far
  • The battery life shouldn't be great because the 925 is what 3.5 years old? She alone should cause battery life to be subpar; if not, that's one heck of a battery they put in there.
  • It improved a lot this last build I usually make a work day with like 40% i was having to charge about every 6 hrs and that's with minimal use
  • Why not 950/XL ? The grass always looks greener on the other side. It's not always so.
  • "What's ppls opinion on this?" look at your down votes.
  • ppl around here will show their anger but I would do the same
  • I want the ability to look at the songs in the Artist menu. Right now only the albums appear and if I forgot in which album the specific song I would like to play is, I have to play all the songs and then select it.
  • Why cant you just use the search?
  • What if I don't remember te name of the song. Anyway I'm lazy AF. So that's the main reason.
  • Yea but things like that are what the preview are for not too hard to code but u don't wanna do too my at one time add a feature get it right add another make sure both are right until complete,
  • How come podcasts, music, tv shows, and movies can't be combined under groove music like apple has iTunes and now android incorporating podcasts in their store?
  • That's a good idea. I guess MS is just hedging their bets on Brand Recognition. If you aren't a Groove Music user, you may not think to look there for anything except for music. They should merge it though.
  • Actually, iTunes, the bloated mess that it is, being required to use Apple Music is why many people are giving up on Apple Music.
    Take this for example: http://thenextweb.com/opinion/2015/10/30/why-i-gave-up-on-apple-music-an...
  • My store finds the updates but doesnt download them automatically. even on wifi..Good to have the manual sync though
  • Same here.
  • Mee too
  • Update android
  • Can you repeat a single song yet? Rofl. Nope. Hilarious app.
  • Yes you can - tap the repeat circle symbol twice!
  • @crise Really? Seems like you never used Windows phone..
  • Talking desktop....
  • Boo! You suck! @crise
  • Yes you can but only on mobile not desktop. Not sure why though
  • ???
  • You're being downvoted because you didn't specify that you meant on the Desktop version of the app. The mobile app has the ability to repeat a single track, but for some silly reason they haven't brought that to the desktop app. That being said, I haven't tried out this update on my desktop so I can't verify that you can or can not yet
  • So much for Universal Apps
  • It's not uncommon to provide mobile-specific UIs for some screens, even on responsive websites. In this case there is a separate UI for the Now Playing screen. Mobile's UI has the Repeat 1 option, desktop does not yet. The code to support Repeat 1 is there on desktop, but simply the UI enhancement to activate it has been missed. A minor omission, and far from a "so much for Universal apps" moment.
  • Yes it is!!
  • This is a great update!
  • *Sigh* Still forced to see artist art rather than album art when playing songs. Really wish they would give us the option.
  • Thus is my biggest gripe as well. ALBUM ART! PLEASE!!!
  • I don't mind it so much as long as they can implement scrolling through multiple pics like in the desktop version.
  • Consider yourself blessed; I'm just seeing a generic grey silhouette portrait for EVERY artist! I'd take artist portrait any day...
  • Lol.
I get mixed album art and artist pictures, some silhouettes and some "Various artists collections" that show the same album art for every song instead of a different (actual) one.
  • Not sure what it looks on the Windows mobile builds, but Groove on iOS is hilariously bad.  It looks and acts like a beta app.
  • it is great on Windows 10 mobile and it is not even the final version yet!
  • And still no Media Casting... :-( SAD... Why don't they add this feature ? It's already available in "Movies & TV" ? It will also soon be available on Edge. So, why ???
  • Also Photo app updated but crashes when I select Folders... Anyone with same behavior?
  • Yep me, I reported it on that app.
  • Same here.
  • Same here, reported via the Windows Feedback app
  • Yep, me too...
  • Same. Thought I needed to restart or reset my phone at first. Glad I found this first.
  • They have an update. It fixes things. Go hit the store, now.
  • Still no Song view for specific artists? Ugh.
  • ??
  • I miss the ability to select an artist, then view that artist's list of songs on your phone. That's how I liked to start music, and now it's gone.
  • I just went looking to do this a few days ago for the first time since I moved to Windows 10 on my phone, I didn't realize that I wanted to do it until I tried to. Then was sad. Hoping this ability comes in the future
  • I like Groove music a lot except for the fact that it doesnt keep me signed in and starts my song over every time I launch it...
  • About time it remembers.
  • Has it gapless playback ?
  • That was in the last update.
  • Yes
  • Are you shure ? This is still not working for me...
  • What build you got? Try updating the Groove Music. If the problem still persist, post a bug feedback and share it to us.
  • 3.6.1382.0, I think it's the newest update ?
  • Yup! That's the latest one. In that case unfortunately you got a bug, file it to the feedback app.
  • I forgot to mention that I'm using it on desktop and I can confirm it's still not hapless. Is it the same for you?
  • mobile got it not the desktop
  • Yes, we are all sure, we aren't all delusioned into thinking it does.
  • Works for me.
  • yes/ work for me some of the time
  • It didn't work for me on the first song I played after the update but it worked on the ones that followed.
  • Almost gapless playback was last update. Almost, because there's STILL an ever so slight stutter right at the break....
  • It's there, just buggy.
  • Can we please have the ability to stream from network drives please, for the life of me I can't get it to work.
  • Hi, I can play mp3 files stored on a WD network drive with Groove.
  • This isn't the place to ask. Submit feedback dude
  • Or start a thread on the forums.
  • Really stable version ! (L925)
  • Samuel 444 cheers for that will convert some flac to MP3 and try.
  • Start radio new
  • Manual sync yesssss
  • Where is it? I can't find it anywhere on the menu :(
  • It's under settings on the top, only on mobile, though, for whatever reason.
  • Do you have to be signed in for that to work? It says that groove isn't supported in my country, so I can't sign in :( I was hoping for a button to manually scan my SD card for me music
  • If you can't see it when you're not signed in, then it's probably just to sync your online music.
  • Finaly!
  • ZypherUk, I'm very disappointed but with this new version I can no more stream my music files from my WD network drivers. This is very strange... I hope it will be fixed !
  • Maybe I have to configure something on my network driver... will give it a try in the next few days.
  • It's working again after activating DLNA and iTunes server on my WD My Cloud network driver.
  • I can't use music import app for downloading mp3 songs. Groove music doesn't recognize any downloaded music. Why?
  • WTF? The desktop app still has the bug where on touch devices, tapping in the search box won't bring up the on screen keyboard. What kind of 3rd rate programmers are working on this app?
  • I believe that is part of the actual OS, if you aren't in tablet mode on the touch device then it won't bring up the keyboard automatically. If I tap the search box on my SP3 and I'm not in tablet mode, then the on-screen keyboard does not appear; when I turn tablet mode on, the keyboard appears as expected. This is how just about all of the text fields work in Windows 10 as well
  • There's actually an option somewhere in settings to turn on that feature outside of tablet mode.
  • Look guys, I know you're trying to help, but you're both wrong. This problem shows up in tablet mode on a DV8P and my kids' HP Stream 7's.  And LITERALLY it's only an problem with the Groove Music app.  It doesn't occur with any other apps - the store app, Music & TV, any other Modern app (or whatever they're calling them nowadays).  The on-screen keyboad even pops up fine in Win32 apps like Chrome, for example.  I've submitted feedback (but the MS feedback system is so broken that there are several similar inputs each with a relatively low number of votes, so who knows if this is even showing up on MS's radar.) I've also posted a thread in the Groove Music forum; didn't have many responses but those who did respons are having the same issue. http://forums.windowscentral.com/groove-music/387129-bug-no-screen-keyboard-when-using-groove-music-search-text-box.html#post3274400 So far I haven't come across one other person saying the on-screen keyboard works for them in the Groove Music app search box.  I can only assume then that it's a universal bug which is mind-blowing and infuriating.  This isn't some subtle, obscure bug.  It's a broken primary UI element on the main app screen, and it's been broken since Win10's release.  I don't see any explanation other than total incompetence.
  • So after typing the reply below (OK, actually above now that I see my response in the thread), I realized that you're claiming that the Groove Music search box actually brings up the on-screen keyboard when you're in tablet mode?  You've actually tried it?  (And I'm not talking about Win10 apps in general because every other app I've ever tried works as expected, but specifically Groove Music.)  Because if that's true, you are the 1st person I've ever, ever seen who claims it works.  So tell me your secret, pretty please, because it doesn't work for me and if you go to feedback and type "search on screen keyboard" you'll see other people with the same issue.
  • It's only started doing it for me today after the update. Keyboard wouldn't pop up in either mode, but now it does in both modes
  • Not working for me.  What version is your Groove Music?  (Mine is showing 3.6.1382.0 after updating.) Also, out of curiousity, are you running the production build of Windows 10 or a preview build?  Just trying to figure out what could be different.
  • MANUAL SYNC!!!!!!! :D :D :D
  • I need network search,so I can connect it with my nas system.
  • Please remove hamburger.
  • You know what? I have to agree. All the hamburger menu does is partially hide the menu. I leave it open all the time anyway otherwise I can't access specific playlists
  • Just keep the hamburger open all the time then, what's the big deal? Leave it there for people who'd like to collapse the menu.
  • One handed use on mobile is not very easy to do with hamburger...
  • I have a Lumia 1520 and have no trouble with one handed use... And I don't use that feature that cuts out half the screen either
  • Since he was talking about leaving it open all the time, I assume he was talking about the desktop app.
  • The new layout on Album page looks uglier though. I don't know why but as if there wasn't any designer on their team, the app still looks generic in general. I'm still waiting for pivot navigation. Also artist bio, album review, and related artist is still missing. At least though they constantly update it. I hope that they will nail it soon.
  • This ^^
  • wat, I loved!
  • Why are the mobile and desktop Groove apps so oddly out of sync despite being on the same version number? It's strange.
  • That's because the Groove Team decided for a separate UI on some parts of the App. That's why the Mobile version features e.g. single song repeat, while the desktop does not. The code is there, just not implemented into the UI yet. I'm sure we'll see the Mobile and desktop apps reach feature parity soon tough.
  • The feedback here reads like a train wreck, sounds like a wonderful app.... /S
  • Now if only they stop removing some of my songs cause of "copyright". I own the bloody CD
  • Yep
  • Does this have a suggestion features like google music when you are changing the ID/renaming the tracks?
  • Rename the song via File explorer. For tags , there are tag editors available in Store...
  • Thanks for metdata editing and smart playlists.
  • And for ordering multidisc albums correctly.
  • Does anyone know if there is a suggestions feature for when editing metdata
  • It would be nice to see the option to sort your music collection by genre instead of just by artist or song.
  • On the desktop if you go to either Album or Song, you can sort by Genre
  • I hope keyboard shows up in tablet mode. That was pain in the neck
  • It doesn't fix it for me.  I've got some posts a little higher up in these comments. It's crazy that it still isn't fixed.
  • This update fixed it for me
  • It's still not fixed. I am counting 3 months!
  • Why are the search results in Groove so bad?
  • Omg syncing! I've been asking for this on feedback forever now. Soooooo nice!
  • Off topic : in 10581,I cant swipe to close my navigation bar it is not working, for some apps ne1??
  • Same issue here.
  • Mini player pleaaaase! Task bar player pleaaase!
  • Taskbar player has been there.
  • Panorama fix when
  • i wish they'd update the Android app to store the cached music on the SD card instead of main memory
  • But Groove sign in problem still not resolve in windows10 desktop....
  • anyone experiencing song stutter/split seconds breaks in the latest WP10 build?
  • I do sometimes when using other apps while groove plays in background. This new update mostly fixed it. :)
  • Still no friggin' album art... How hard can it be?!?! It's been there in every predecessor since the dawn of time!
  • Groove music may not be like by everyone. But atleast its a step up from Xbox music, which never made any sense. They are adding features and they will add more.So far it isn't bad for an app that's a work in progress.
  • Manual sync? Nice! :)
  • Yes!!!! Now groove works smooth as soap bacon in butterlake. Scrolling song list doesn't lag anymore! :) Awesome! This was only thing that didn't work well in W10M. So happy now ^^
  • Nie beskikbaar in Suid Afrika nie.... Sommer poes!
  • Looking good on this update. I've seen a bug when my screen is lock. Pressing the volume to show player bar and when i press the next button or previous button, my screen flickers. This is happened to my L830.
  • I find the sound quality on WMP on Win10 to be better than Groove Music.
  • Still shows podcasts in music collection.
