Windows Central News

You may (or may not) be aware of Nokia's latest app that just went into beta - Glance Background. If you're not, be sure to read this article for more information, as well as our awesome hands-on coverage to see what all the fuss is about.

While you can add your own images and create some cool effects, we thought it would be truly awesome to show off the Windows Phone Central logo while glance screen is active.

Last night, we reported that our app was having a few troubles on the AT&T network (and a few of you on Verizon said the same). It was a networking issue, not the app directly and while we won’t bother you with the details, it should be working for most users now.

We just checked on our phones and have finally had a successful connection, but we need to make sure all is good for the rest of you. So if you use our app and are on AT&T, Verizon, etc. please take the poll below and let us know your results!

We're not entirely sure what's going on here, but we've just had a flood of e-mails from users who are reporting that our app is crashing when they try to use it. Coincidently they all appear to be AT&T variants of Windows Phone. We're currently testing the app to establish exactly what's happened but first tests seem to show that when loading over the AT&T mobile network, the app fails, Wi-Fi connections and other networks appear to be unaffected.

Following last night's BIG Microsoft / Nokia news, we've been receiving a bunch of tweets from media sources wanting to speak with us but unsure of the best way to reach out to us for commentary or to setup an interview. So here's a friendly note on the best way to do just that.

Simply send an email to mediarequests @ mobilenations.com and put WPCentral Interview Request in the headline. We'll always do our best to comply with your requests. WPCentral's  Editor in Chief, Daniel Rubino, is not too far from Manhattan, so for big media based in NYC he's available for in-studio appearances. If you want to get the pulse of the Windows Phone community, he's your source.

After officially announcing the Lumia 1020 in New York City, Nokia is back in front of the mainstream news. From local news stations to major networks, it’s going to be hard to ignore 41 megapixels in a smartphone. But when it comes to anything Windows Phone related news there’s only one authority. You’re reading it right now. So who better for local NYC radio station WCBS 880 to talk to than our very own Daniel Rubino?

If there is one thing that is fun to look at, it’s just how massive the Nokia Lumia 1020’s 41MP BSI sensor is when compared to “normal” smartphone sensors.

Such is the case in the photo above, where you can see the Lumia 1020’s sensor, lenses and housing, along with “standard” 8MP sensors (Hint: the 1020’s are the big ones).

Nokia is set to unveil their latest mobile photography addition to their Lumia line, the Lumia 1020, this Thursday, that hasn’t stopped them from launching a new website dedicated to cameras.

Heading to www.nokia.com/global/experience/photography/ users will be treated to news, tips and tricks for taking better photos. While the current focus is on the Lumia 9xx line, including the Lumia 920, 925 and 928, we’re pretty sure Nokia will update the site with “1020” info as well as soon as that device goes live.

What seems to have been a lifetime ago, we announced a photo contest where the winner walks away with a Nokia Lumia 928 Windows Phone from Verizon. Well... the best laid plans of mice and men were overturned by a little event known as //BUILD/ and determining a winner was delayed a wee bit.

Our delay is your gain in that along with a grand prize winner, we're tossing in two runner up prizes (gift cards to the WPCentral Accessory Store). It took a little head scratching but we've pick our three winners.

Apparently Microsoft aren't the only ones with a new rapid release cycle! Somehow today I get to announce a third update to the official Windows Phone Central app in the same number of weeks. Before anyone gets too excited though, this one is just a quick tune up to the v4.3 feature set, fixing two important bugs and finally bringing forum likes to Windows Phone 7 users.

Yes, we figured out why the Tapatalk API wasn't allowing the WP7 build to send like requests in our forums and that has now been resolved. Still, this isn't the most exciting update, but you can find the change list after the break or download from the marketplace right here (it should be showing up as version 4.3.15).

Halo: Spartan Assault is coming to both Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8. It marks the first time in the franchise’s history that it won’t be on console or PC. It’s also the second time there will be a departure in gameplay from the series trademark first-person shooter experience. This past week at //BUILD/ we learned a bit more about the upcoming game. We also have a better picture of when it should be on your Windows Phone 8 device – the middle of July.

Last week we pushed out an update to our app with a few new features, bug fixes and speed improvements, whilst also promising that a second part of that update would be coming this week. Well, that time is now and you can pick up the second release of v4.3 for both Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 from the marketplace right now.

This release contains an important fix for Windows Phone 8 users where using the lock screen wallpaper functionality was causing the app to use up more of your storage than it needed to. That problem is solved now and we've even included a new button in the settings that will clear out all files held by the app in temporary storage for those of you who like control over your gigabytes. See below for what else has changed.
