Windows Phone News

Another carrier has (surprisingly) beat AT&T to the punch for the Lumia Denim update. T-Mobile US is now pushing out the update to its small but dedicated base of Lumia 925 owners, bringing some new firmware and an OS upgrade.

T-Mobile themselves have not updated their support page, but Microsoft has, and tips from users tell us the update is live. Indeed, we have checked on two of our Lumia 925s for the US carriers and have updates waiting.

Have you heard the news? Google does not care for Microsoft nor Windows Phone. In fairness, this is not news, but if you need more evidence of their antagonism, look no further than Softcard.

On Monday, Google announced that they had purchased "technology and intellectual property" from Softcard, essentially acquiring the core of that company's product line. The effort is likely a desperate move to catch up to Apple Pay, which is picking up commercial adoption by many banks and retail outlets.

Softcard is also available in the US for Windows Phone, specifically with Verizon and AT&T being supporters. In fact, the apps only recently became available (although our personal experience with their service was not exactly awe-inspiring). The fate of Softcard for Windows Phone though was not known until now.

Besides movies and 'pick the winners', some users are reporting to us that Cortana also has a new Lifestyle interest. Heading deeper into the category reveals a Fitness Tracker section, which we presume ties into the Microsoft Band.

Currently, none of us at Windows Central has the interest in our Cortana Notebook, so we can only guess as to how it works.

If you are using Cortana on your Windows Phone or Windows 10 preview device, you may want to dive into Settings > Interests to check off some new categories. It looks like the Cortana team has finally delivered on some new items for Cortana to follow, and we are excited to see how they work.

Sometime in the last few days 'Showtimes + Trailers' (found under Movies) and 'Pick the Winners' (found under Entertainment) were added to Cortana's information repository. Users can then enable the categories and the personal assistant will keep you up to date when there are changes.

Lumia 535 continues to grow, Windows 10 grabs some of the market, and new mysterious Lumias are discovered

The story of Windows Phone market share within itself is now a familiar one, with budget phones abounding. Last month we saw a rapid entry of the new Microsoft Lumia 535 to many markets, including India. AdDuplex (AdDuplex.com) has now released its numbers for February, 2015, and they mainly reflect this trend.

No surprises here as the biggest gains were seen by the Lumia 530, Lumia 630/635 and the Microsoft branded Lumia 535. However, some new unannounced Lumias were also spotted, giving us a peek at next week's MWC event.

Recent talk has suggested that the popular Lumia 635 Windows Phone was in line for a popular hardware upgrade. One of the biggest limitations to the Lumia 635 (despite being one of the first Windows 10 preview phones) is the 512MB of RAM, meaning some apps just won't install. Various sightings of a 1GB version have started appearing across the web, but now it appears that the phone is somewhat official having been listed on Microsoft's own website.

Earlier today, evidence came forward for an unreleased RM-1109 Lumia phone destined for Brazil. Unfortunately, no other information about the device was found except something related to battery size. Speculation suggested it could be the rumored 'Lumia 1330'.

Now, the same site that trekked through Anatel's documents have churned up another record connecting RM-1109 to the unannounced Lumia 640. Janela Tech is reporting that this device is dual SIM and sports integrated digital television (DTV), something that is increasingly popular in that region.

It is currently unknown if the Lumia 640 is an exclusive to Brazil, which seems likely, or another mass-market lower-midrange Lumia. More information about the phone is under embargo at Brazil's regulatory agency, Anatel, until after Mobile World Congress in March. The timing suggests we will hear more about this device during Microsoft's conference. Alternatively, it may only receive a local announcement, due to the smaller market involved.

Microsoft has announced today that it will be dropping support for the Rooms feature on Windows Phones in March. In an email sent out to users, the company notes that you'll still be able to interact with your room photo albums, calendars, and notes, but you won't be able to create new rooms, make membership or permission changes, or send new messages after the March deadline.

Yesterday we reported that the Lumia Denim update was due by the end of the month for those in India. So far, only the Lumia 520 has received the update in that country, with a broad swath of Lumia phones still waiting for the OS upgrade.

Today, Microsoft has gone and refreshed their update page with new additions to the Lumia Denim software release. Seeing as we are not in India at this time, we cannot confirm if the update is rolling out, but if not, it should be coming very soon.

Nearly a week ago, Microsoft unleashed an early release of Windows 10 for phones through their Insider preview program. Considering that Windows 10 is far from finished, there are a lot more questions than answers at this time for consumers as to the endgame for Microsoft's new OS.

Gabriel Aul, who has become the default spokesperson for the Windows Insider program, has taken to Twitter to respond to the myriad of inquiries from users. Here is a recap of some of the bits we have learned recently.
