Windows Phone News

Starting about ten days ago, reports that Samsung was pushing out Windows Phone 8.1 Update for ATIV S users began circulating the 'nets. We have our own ATIV S here in the house, which is an unbranded UK release, and were not able to get any such update. Instead, we are stuck on Windows Phone 8.0 GDR3 (Build 10517; Firmware 2424.13.10.1).

As it turns out, a very select few ATIV S users are getting Windows Phone 8.1 Update (Build 14157; Firmware 2424.14.9.3), which is splendid news. The bad news is it is isolated to specific regions like Austria and maybe Hong Kong.

Samsung ATIV S devices released through carriers and most other areas are not seeing the update yet, although obviously this can change. Let me try and explain and give you the full story.

It is no secret at this point that the Nokia name was going to be eventually supplanted by something else. Nokia lives on as a separate company, while Microsoft takes ownership of the Lumia brand and brings the new employees into the fold.

Speculation about the name change has been going for months but on October 21, Microsoft made it official by stating the new name will go from Nokia Lumia to Microsoft Lumia.

Tonight, the Conversations blog has more on the name change, including what it all means.

There's a new update out for those enrolled in the Windows Phone 8.1 Preview for Developers program. Go to your settings and check for an update, and you'll find 8.10.14192.280 available. The download and installation of the update should take about 5 to 10 minutes. Microsoft is listing this as a 'critical update'. Don't skip out.

Microsoft has its work cut out for them in the United States where perception of the tech giant is seen as less hip than Apple. Besides the near ubiquitous adoption by celebrities of the iPhone, the US Congress is also evidently a big fan of Cupertino's hardware.

Popular DC rag The Hill conducted a survey back at the beginning of the month asking members of Congress which phones they used. As it turns out, more than 71 percent of our lawmakers use iPhones, with 28 percent still using BlackBerry. Android does not fair too well either, with only 9 percent favoring the somewhat convoluted mobile OS. Many in Congress also carry multiple phones.

HipChat (hipchat.com) is a personal messaging service that lets users create rooms to have one on one or group conversations. The service has been around since 2010, but there is no native Windows Phone app, just some decent third-party ones.

That may change, though, assuming you let the HipChat team know your thoughts on the matter.

The Nokia Lumia 830 is seeding out globally to retailers and carriers with the phone expected to launch in the US on AT&T Friday, November 7. The 5-inch Windows Phone nicknamed the 'affordable flagship' won our initial praise last week in our first-impressions article.

Windows Central has now learned some marketing plans for the Lumia 830 when it arrives early next month for AT&T, and it includes a Fitbit Flex promotion. Evidently, Microsoft has a separate SKU for the phone that includes a free Fitbit Flex with every purchase. The deal will be a limited-time-offer or until the bundle runs out of stock. It will be available both at Microsoft Stores as well as AT&T ones as well.

The Lumia 830 has finally made its way north of the border into Canada. It was only a handful of hours ago when we covered news that the new Windows Phone is available on Rogers, but the same device is also listed with Telus. Available for $0 on a 2-year plan, consumers have the option of being tied into a contract or being hit with a $500 fee for the Lumia 830 off-contract.

Verizon has yet to announce the Nokia Lumia 735 as coming to their portfolio, and there may be a good reason for that: it is not due until 2015. Multiple sources have confirmed with Windows Phone Central that the Verizon branded Lumia 735 with LTE, which is in development, is currently not scheduled to come out this calendar year.

Early reports suggest there may be some stability issues with Verizon's dual CDMA/LTE network although it is just as likely that Verizon only wants to schedule it then for their own internal reasons.

Starting in early November, AT&T is expected to begin selling the new Nokia Lumia 830 in addition to the HTC One for Windows. The two phones offer different price points for those looking for a new Windows Phone, and they should bode well for the 'premier' Windows Phone carrier this holiday season.

Yesterday, we reported that Qi wireless charging is included with the AT&T version. This turnaround is important since AT&T had previously shied away from supporting Qi, instead backing the alternative PMA wireless charging standard. Today, we can expand this further with more details.

Microsoft this morning pushed out an update for the Extras + Info system app found on Nokia Lumia smartphones. The Extras + Info area is where users can find out what firmware version they are currently on, like Lumia Black, Lumia Cyan, or Lumia Denim.

Today's update arrives without a changelog; however it is safe to surmise that it is laying the groundwork for the forthcoming Lumia Denim update for those still on Cyan. In fact, many people have tipped us after updating to tell they now have the Lumia Denim update.

This claim of having Lumia Denim though is false.

We got our first in-depth look at the new Lumia 830 'affordable flagship' phone yesterday, and I briefly talked about Qi wireless charging. The Lumia 830 comes with the popular standard built into the removable back cover, leaving two contact points on the phone itself to get a charge.

AT&T has announced that they are getting the Lumia 830, and through our sources, we have pinned down a date for Friday, November 7. This sale date is reportedly the same for the AT&T HTC One for Windows.

The big question for many is will the Lumia 830 have the Qi wireless cover or is it removed?
