Windows Phone News

Earlier today, Microsoft unleashed a new update for their Battery Saver app. At the time, there was no changelog posted, so instead we had to infer the changes, some of which were obvious.

Tonight, Microsoft has updated the changelog in the Store, and it is a whopper, with many details about the refreshed system app. Even more, the changelog refers to Windows Phone 8.1 build 14203. The current Windows Phone 8.1.1 build for the Preview for Developers program is 14192, meaning there is a good chance Windows Phone users are about to get another OS update very soon.

For those on Verizon waiting for the Lumia Cyan and 8.1 update to grace your Lumia 822, Lumia 928 or Lumia Icon, there is more bad news to report.

Windows Central reader NOLATechy has noticed that the Lumia Cyan update page has shifted the status from 'Under Testing' to a new stage 'Under Development'. If that sounds like a step backwards, you are correct.

Microsoft is going to launch the first Windows Phone devices to feature the manufacturer's branding at an event tomorrow. The software maker's even made a video about it, although it doesn't give us nearly as much information as some of the leaks we've been seeing over the weekend. The video itself is on the new Microsoft Lumia channel on YouTube, so be sure to subscribe to it for all the official Windows Phone related videos from Redmond.

Update: We've received new information that the images, as it turns out, are fake. The image of the yellow device in question looks identical to the one featured in our hands-on of the Lumia 1320 back at Nokia World 2013. That's not to say that the device alleged to be the Lumia 1330 won't feature a similar design. A leaked image of the back cover does indicate that the speaker will now be alongside the camera sensor. This set of images, are however, believed to be false. We're sorry for the confusion, and will be more diligent in the future (whilst checking our own media).

Yesterday, AT&T began to sell two new Windows Phones: the HTC One for Windows and the Nokia Lumia 830. We picked up the latter phone from our local store, where they had a few in stock and figured we would do an ol'fashioned unboxing and tour.

Perhaps what makes the AT&T Lumia 830 a little bit more interesting is that for a limited time, it comes with a free Fitbit Flex activity tracker – a $99 value. The Fitbit and Lumia 830 come bundled together in a larger box, making it quite the care package for $99 with contract ($450 without).

Microsoft is hoping to help developers increase Windows Phone app revenue by today announcing ad mediation for Windows Phone. Ad mediation lets your app use multiple advertising SDKs. When an app makes a call to one ad control, and that control can't serve the ad, it calls another control. The new mediation control makes implementing and managing this in an app simple.

This morning, AT&T began to sell the new Nokia Lumia 830 (yes, it is still branded as a Nokia) and the HTC One for Windows, which thankfully lost its Verizon-exclusivity.

So, the big question for some people is which one to get? Naturally, this presumes you are willing to fork over money for a new Windows Phone today, as opposed to waiting until sometime in 2015 for a new 'flagship' Lumia. If you are in the latter group, feel free to skip this article.

Let me break the pros and cons of the Lumia 830 versus the HTC One down for you.

Duolingo is a free service that allows you to learn new languages using apps available on both iOS and Android. Looking at the official Duolingo Facebook page, the company has teased what appears to be a Windows Phone version of the app, which will be made available on November 19.
