After months of waiting, Xbox 360 version of Mortal Kombat X gets cancelled

Mortal Kombat X was a big critical and sales hit for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC platforms when the fighting game was released in April. Its developer NetherRealm Studios and publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment had planned to launch the game for the older Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles as well. However, today it was revealed that Mortal Kombat X won't be released for those platforms after all.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment originally said they were delaying the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions until this summer, but it looks like the publisher decided to throw in the towel instead:

"After months of development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has come to the regrettable conclusion that we cannot release Mortal Kombat X for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Please know our teams worked diligently to meet the quality standards set by the current-gen versions of the game. We were not able to get the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions to the quality expected of a Mortal Kombat game and are very sorry for not being able to deliver the products as originally planned.""If you pre-ordered Mortal Kombat X for PS3 or Xbox 360, please go to the retail location where you pre-ordered the game and you will receive a full refund."

  • Dayum.
  • Did they pull the team to help finish batman arkham knight!? lol
  • Dear WBIE: GET OVER HERE!!!!!11!!1!!!
  • LOL, nice reference! However, I think WB will do fine with their billions of dollars, regardless. PS3 and XB360 are legacy consoles now, cirka 10 (!) years old. We cannot expect new games to be released anymore. It's a fatality move to go that route in the long run, since it hinders the development of next-gen games. Why? Because people need to upgrade their consoles so that devs can focus on making games that bring new kinds of gameplay, like moving around huge cities or landscapes with tons of things happening on screen at the same time, etc. (Note: while I do not recommend the power-hungry XB One, I am waiting for the XBOX ONE with the reduced heat and energy-saver APU from AMD. Hopefully people will invest in that and move on from legacy systems). It also hinders next-gen games in the sense that alternative legacy games should look the same or at least very close to being the same game. That will not be possible if you want to take advantage of all aspects of a modern game. That said: WB and NeatherRealm Studios (the latter is a nice MK name, I must say) should not have promised to have this one released for the older consoles and then decide to cancel it. They should simply not have announced it at all. Or, why not make another game, like, a much less demanding game? Less particle effects or whatever and much less graphical detail, etc.
  • The guy just made a MK reference, why did u answer it with a whole life story?
  • Lol jcccrooked lol
  • Just making a conversation :-). I had some extra time on my hands.
  • Makes sense...
  • I am not surprised at all. I have an Xbox One though, but I own this game on PC.
  • They're a decade old just kill em already
  • That's kinda the point of this game...
  • They need to stop making games for the old gen and focus on the new gen. I am also tired of playing definitive this and that....we want new games made for the up to date consoles not a game from 2010 etc....smt!!!
  • +1
  • If you spoke for the majority of people like you imply you do, then the definitive editions wouldn't sell well, and they would stop making them. That's the only way it will stop.
I've heard a lot of people say enough is enough, need to stop and then say unless it was x game lol
  • I have a ps3 and only a ps3 so I hope they keep developing for it, but I also have a Nintendo Wii which I know they stopped developing for
  • Yea that sucks I wish they had not stop it for nintendo as mk started from nintendo and was one of my fav games.
  • So you have a PS3 and a Wii, and only a PS3 and a Wii.
  • Speak for yourself, I'm enjoying the higher res games
  • By "new gen," do you mean from 2 years ago when the Xbone came out? Lol its not new gen, it's current gen. Actually considering it uses hardware from 4-5 years ago, its pretty old. #PCMR
  • Alternate headline title: To the surprise of no one!...
  • "After months of development..we cannot release MK...", wonder how much it cost them developing it for months.. I'm sure it's not costly as GTA 5 but still
  • Months in development probably means it was discussed in meetings for months
  • Lol
  • Lolol
  • Yea, pretending to develop it and be like ohhh nooo can't do it now sorryyyy, got to throw away all of this work we 99% completed...!
  • Enough to shelve whatever Windows phone projects they were working on... (not that this studio was). I love that developers say it isn't worth their while but then you read story like this...
  • Nooooooooo! :'(
  • They would have made the games with "acceptable quality" if the current Gen versions didn't sell well or if the systems didn't exist. I doubt it was ever a real plan to make them available for last Gen.
  • In the end, it's just as well. I plan to buy a replacement 360, but I know I'll have to hang it up in due time, but I still have some games I need to finish before saying goodbye for good.
  • I know it's not fully released yet, but the Xbox one will be backwards comparable. So you could just finish those games on the xbo without buying a replacement 360 with a significantly shirt shelf life.
  • Red shirt shelf life?
  • True, but I still need to finish Skyrim and I'm not sure if Bethesda is even going to make Oblivion or Skyrim BC on X1. Add to the fact that my games need to be in cloud storage to even access them on X1 and I don't feel like starting over. :-S
  • You are able to transfer your saves from local storage to cloud on Xbox 360.
  • Bought my Xbox one for this game. Hope MK Kollection (xb360) gets backwards compatibility..
  • Backwards compatibility: Writing on the wall
  • What?
  • When my family upgraded to the Xbox One we never looked back so long my old Xbox 360 good memories.
  • Get over here!
  • any info on 360 project spark
  • Cancelled too.
  • Noooooooo.......
  • This is why you shouldn't pre-order games.
  • They're offering a full refund. Them releasing a shitty port would illustrate your point, but not this.
  • Very bad
  • The mobile version of the game is flat out gorgeous.
  • What they really meant: "We are lazy and don't want to spend money on them". Just look on PC version of Arkham Knight.
  • Don't do this for new tomb raider
  • They will. Or at least it will be seriously gimped. What they showed of the xbox one version wouldn't stand any chance of running on 360.
  • And what they showed of the Xbox One version was actually rendered on PC and wouldn't stand any chance of running on Xbone.
  • Actual gameplay idiot. Everythimg shown is able to run on Xbox One
  • 360 and ps3 need to die off now. Devs should purely concentrate on this generation. Not last now.
  • There's a leaked iso of the game in beta somewhere for the 360 version
  • The problem, as usual with these things, is that it's impossible to meet user's unrealistic expectations. Whenever a developer says "Look at what I managed to build by taking advantage of this new technology (be hardware or software)", a user, or worse, a manager, asks "How long to get the exact same result using the old technology". Expectations are so crazy unrealistic that many time users even assume they'll get the new features in the existing software without even upgrading. As in "This is one of the great new feature we worked on for the next release of our software" met by a "That's really cool, how do I do it in my current version ?"... as if people didn't even understand anymore that "new" means "not existing before".
  • Excellent
  • Well I applaud them for not releasing it Too many broken games are realesed
  • The PS4 is selling very well. The One is getting backwards compatibility. They just did the math and realised they'd be wasting more money than they'd make with the game so they cancelled it. Simple.
  • This.
  • I think this news sucks. But it's not all that shocking. I'm sorry for the fans that pre ordered it.
  • While I wasn't necessarily looking forward to it, this sucks for those of us (like myself) who are still in the last generation. I would move on to the One (or a PS4. I haven't decided which one I would buy if I had the money). But I have so many 360 games backlogged to complete. Would be a bit irresponsible to go out and plunk down on a new system. Especially when (for me personally) there has yet to be that system selling game I would take the plunge for
  • Of Course old device can earn money just only by the checked titles who can earn a millions of dollars ekhhhm millions of debt because today dollars cover debt not gold.
  • Disappointing, but understandable. The platforms are old, and it would have been a bad move to release a terribly ported game.
  • Actually very admirable that they would cancel and refund, eating the cost of development because it can't be done well enough on ancient consoles. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
