When it comes to using Reddit on Windows Phone we’ve got two great apps – Baconit and Baconography. Both apps serve the Windows Phone and Reddit community well. Today Baconography was updated to version 1.2 and gained a handful of new features and fixes. Let’s check it out.
Head into the Store and you’ll see version 1.2.0.0 of Baconography available for download on Windows Phone 8. It gained some pretty cool features that we’re happy to see in this update. Here they are in bullet list form:
- Predictive caching improves responsiveness and lets you browse disconnected
- User multi-Reddit support
- Lockscreen and live tile support
- Send and receive messages, get notifications on post and comment replies
- New submission support
- Comment sorting
- Major performance improvements: more responsive UI, unlimited pinned subreddits, faster load times
- Double-tap on header automatically scrolls to top
- User-configurable interaction style for extended links (tap or long-hold)
- In-app purchase available for ad removal
- Lots of bug fixes
By far the coolest feature is the predictive offline caching, which you enable in the settings. What is this predictive caching? Basically Baconography will aggregate usage statistics about subreddits, links, and comments that you click. This data is only stored on your device (no NSA worries here) and is used to intelligently guess which links you’re likely to click on. The links that Baconography thinks you’re liking to click on will then be cached on the device. When you click those links the data loads quickly because its coming from your phone and not the web. Pretty freaking awesome right?
An extension of this feature manifests itself in another feature called overnight offline caching. Baconography will download more data at a faster rate when your phone is plugged in and on Wi-Fi. Again, pretty freaking awesome. We can’t wait to try this out ourselves over the next few days.
Some other welcomed features include lockscreen support, comment sorting, performance improvements, and bug fixes. The lockscreen support looks great. You can select which subreddits to pull images from (hello r/earthporn) and even have the top portion of the lockscreen display a news feed from a subreddit.
Feel free to share your favorite subreddit's below!
Baconography is available for Windows Phone 8 devices. It’s free and supported with ads that aren’t obtrusive at all, but you can remove them with an in-app purchase for just $1.99. The app is also open source, so you can take code and make it your own. Follow the links in the about section of the app to get at it.
