Best 2016 Olympic Games apps for Windows 10

The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro kick off this week. The games offer a wide range of sporting events that include golf, gymnastics, swimming, track and more. While many are planning on attending the games in Rio, millions more will enjoy the global competition from the comfort of home.

There are several great Windows 10 apps to help keep you up to date on all the medal-winning action. The Windows 10 Mobile versions of these apps are perfect to use while on the go and the PC versions can be enjoyed from the comfort of your living room.

There aren't many dedicated Summer Games apps for Windows 10, and that's okay. But there are several excellent general sports apps that will serve you well long after the closing ceremony in Rio — here are the best.

NBC Sports Live Extra

NBC Sports Live

NBC Sports Live Extra delivers thousands of live sporting events to your Windows 10 PC that air on the NBC, NBCSN and Golf Channel. The free app now includes a 2016 Olympic channel that delivers live content from the Rio Games.

The NBC Olympics channel is located in the main menu of the app and delivers a collection of featured videos on the games and hundreds of live streams of Olympic events.

NBC Sports Live

There is a Windows 10 Mobile version of NBC Sports Live Extra, but it has yet to be updated to include the NBC Olympics channel. Also, please note that NBC Sports Live Extra is only available in the U.S. and certain U.S. territories.

2016 Olympics

2016 Olympis

2016 Olympics is an unofficial Windows 10 app for the Rio Olympics and includes scores, schedules and news items for the 2016 games.

Available for Windows 10 Mobile, 2016 Olympics also includes video highlights and features, medal watches and athlete profiles. It is a rather comprehensive app, but can be glitchy at times with noticeable delays in launching features and unresponsive on-screen buttons. Also, there is an oddity in the Store listing.

2016 Olympics

While the app has its quirks, when 2016 Olympics is hitting on all cylinders it is a decent unofficial app for the Rio games. It is also one of the few dedicated Windows 10 apps for the Summer Olympics.

  • Already have most of these. Checked out he Rio app, and found out that it was a Samsung app, which from my past experience with their G7 Edge, means that it is as big of a privacy hog as Google is.    No Thank You
  • Edit: Had to change country settings to UK to download the BBC app.
  • Even Rio 2016 makes its app, Pokémon GO and Snapchat can't make that
  • The NBC Sports app requires you to pay for the USA Network. If you have That channel you can watch for free. Otherwise they only let you watch for 30 minutes via a browser.
  • I would like to have an app that updates me about Rio 2016 Olympics.
  • Most of these apps suck if live broadcast of games mimics that of NBC..Besides making you being a subscriber in order to pay to watch thru your cable tv or other sources, they only broadcast your country events and not much of other countries, not to mention the stupid background stories of athletes...
  • The NBC apps will stream all and every event, including events that aren't on NBC's tv stations.
  • You're dreaming...that's impossible!
  • The NBC sports live extra app says it won't work on my device, Icon on 10 mobile on Verizon. Anyone else?
  • The old NBC Sports Live Extra mobile app will not be updated.  You need to search the store for a new app simply called "NBC Sports" - the tile will have the Olympic rings on it.  That new app, is a replacement and has the Olympic content.  It is in the store already, and live; I have it on my phone, and it works.
  • Can I change the region without restarting the phone?
  • Hate that CBC didn't release an app this time for win 10 like they used to. but I can still watch live by hooking up my old SlingBox
