What you need to know

  • BioShock is a critically acclaimed game franchise developed by studios under Take-Two Interactive and 2K Games.
  • Take-Two Interactive and 2K Games are working on a BioShock movie in partnership with Netflix.
  • The last game in the series, BioShock Infinite, launched in 2013.
  • A new game is currently in development at Cloud Chamber, a studio under 2K Games.

A BioShock movie is in development, Netflix shared on Tuesday. This movie is being developed as a collaboration between publisher Take-Two Interactive, 2K Games, and Netflix, described as being a film adaption of the BioShock franchise.

The phrasing is ambigious enough that it's not currently clear whether this film would be going over the events of the first BioShock, or if instead it'll attempt to adapt the events of multiple games. No writers or directors for the project have been revealed as of yet.

Take-Two Interactive and 2K Games are currently working on the next entry in the franchise, with a new BioShock game being developed by Cloud Chamber, an internal studio founded specifically for the new game. The first BioShock launched in 2007 to critical acclaim, followed by BioShock 2 in 2010 and BioShock Infinite in 2013.

Following the shutdown of BioShock Infinite developer Irrational Games, creative director Ken Levine has been working on a new game at Ghost Story Games, another internal studio at Take-Two Interactive. This game has reportedly languished in development hell, with delays and reboots attributed to Levine's management style.
