Connect to hotspots to chat with friends; Skype WiFi now available for Windows 8

Hotspots are available across the world and offer an easy way to get connected when you're not at home. Microsoft has released a Skype WiFi app (www.skype.com (opens in new tab)) for Windows 8, enabling consumers to connect to said hotspots and chat with friends and family over WiFi, instead of racking up expensive roaming charges or fumbling around with direct registration.
Should you find yourself travelling abroad and require to remain in contact with friends and whatnot, this app is definitely a must-have for you. What's also cool is the fact you can also use the Internet access for general web browsing too. The best part is there's no extra step to get started. Simply log in with your Skype account and add some Skype Credit.
But why bother going through this app, as opposed to going through the hotspot directly? Instead of paying for the WiFi access with real currency, or purchasing a daily bundle, Skype WiFi will connect to hotspots at hotels, airports, bars and restaurants using Skype Credit. You only pay for the time you're connected - there are no limits on the amount of data you can upload or download.
Paying for Internet access by the minute is a fairly cost-effective solution. Prices of nearby available hotspots are displayed before connecting, so you can get the best deal. Each session will last for a maximum of 30 minutes and you'll be prompted to reconnect should you wish to continue the session - it's of course possible to disconnect at any time.
Already available on competing platforms, it's good to see Microsoft supporting its latest desktop OS - perfect for tablets. Say goodbye to those annoying registration wizards and fumbling with your wallet. Simply top-up your Skype credit, log in whenever you require Internet, choose your hotspot and you're good to go.
You can download Skype WiFi (opens in new tab) from the Windows Store. Thanks, Nicholas, for the tip!

Great added benefit will come in handy especially with surface!!

I use Skype all the time on my WiFi at home and WiFi thru my phone already?
-
You really need to read the article. This is allowing you to pay for WiFi when you're away from home and can't find free WiFi. Typically if you're overseas or out of mobile network reception and so can't tether to your phone.
-
You should have read it earlier.
-
I submitted my reply too early and have expanded my explanation
-
Understandable. But everywhere I've traveled I've found free WiFi. Now I've not traveled over seas so maybe good for those people. But I don't see a use for in metro areas of the US.
-
Typo, not Windows Phone Store but Windows Store
-
This is news for Windows 8, right? Maybe you want to change the last part into 'Windows Store'.
-
Heh, well spotted. The habit of writing that same phrase thousands of times :-)
-
Hey Rich question here. I've used Skype to talk to my cousin in Texas while at a Starbucks on my surface before. Well a couple if times now. Using there WiFi. Is that nit suppose to happen? Or am I missing something for Skype team just to get more money?
-
If you're connecting to a free hotspot then you're all good to go without doing anything. AFAIK you get access to AT&T there for free when enjoying a coffee.
-
Ah ok thanks for clearing that up for me.
-
Do I understand correctly: the hotspot provider should be supporting Skype WiFi in order for the app to work? If so, is there a list somewhere of hotspot providers that support Skype WiFi?
-
Yes, i'm pretty sure that's how it works. However, I don't see a list anywhere, which is a bit disheartening at this stage.
-
The good thing is, it is available at airports.
-
Question is: which airports or all airports globally? :)
-
Where is my halo
-
And when it will be available for Windows Phone..?
-
Wonder if the Skype Wifi will work when flying on a commercial airline that has Wifi? Now that would be a HUGE plus!
-
Good app concept, but when the hotspot is slow like fuck paying for time is kind of unfair - why should I pay more for checking my emails when the internet experience i get is worse?
-
Tell me about hotspot. Is it good? How this works?
-
Can anyone tell me the passward of 18th room in the 'doors' game?
