Dropbox updated with Project NEON design flourishes, performance improvements

Microsoft may be slowly integrating its new Project NEON design language into its own apps, but Dropbox is already shipping it to everyone with its app. As of its latest update, the Dropbox app for Windows 10 now sports a bit of transparent blur on its sidebar in the Project NEON style.

Aside from the sidebar blur effect, Dropbox developer Rudy Huyn points to a series of under-the-hood improvements that should make for improved performance. Keep in mind that the NEON flourishes will only be visible to anyone using Dropbox on the Windows 10 Creators Update. If you're dying to check it out, you'll want to make sure you've upgraded to Microsoft's latest.

Project NEON is Microsoft's next big design shift for Windows 10 apps, characterized by blurred, transparent UI elements. Microsoft concepts also point to an updated Start menu, parallax effects, and new fluid animations as well. We should see these improvements arrive in full for Microsoft's Redstone 3 Windows 10 update this fall, but we'll also likely get a deeper look at Build 2017 in May.

In any case, you can pick up Dropbox version 4.7 from the Windows Store now.

  • Rudy is there. So only..
  • Has he really abandoned 6tag?
  • Apparently. It works, so why bother. It did get behind Instagram on features but oh well.
  • 6tag development entered in maintenance mode since Instagram released their official app. He doesn't have time to work on it now that he's with Dropbox anyway.
  • Too bad the titlebar is not integrated in the app (like on the contact app)
  • So they are bringing aero glass back ?
  • Aero + Metro + Modern + Some Material
  • it looks so.
  • Is this new Neon UI update of dropbox available for mobile on creators update !!
  • Dropbox vs One drive > 1:0 🙈
  • Onedrive mobile app already has some transparency elements 😎
  • Be honest Dan, that of Neon has nothing.
  • Good to see Rudy Huyn is still hard at it :)
  • Wonder when it will be possible to use the aero like effect in the title bar. Also if dropbox is following UWP guidelines, why does it have the ugly plus sign in the corner, obviously borrowed from android? Seems like an odd choice to me.
  • Nice! Aero Glass, the beauty of Windows 7, is slowly making its way back to Windows. Sooner or later, there'll be no more excuse of a lazy-fugly-flat UI repelling users from Windows 10...believe it or not, that is something I and many still haven't stopped missing from Windows 7.
  • Hopefully there will be an API when NEON launches to take on the user's accent color to make it even more like Aero.
  • I'm surprised, Dan. Why didn't you post a screenshot, for people who can't access these features yet?
  • It is in there as part of the embedded tweet. Are you running an ad blocker per chance? That could be blocking it.
  • I am running ABP plus NoScript, but I have WindowsCentral whitelisted.  It must be some third party site that provides the twitter content.  I checked it on a VM and could see it.  Plus 20+ ads.  Yeah, an embedded picture is a small price to pay for that.  Thanks!
  • Ruuuudyyyy!
  • I don't like it.
  • I hope the parallax effect can be disabled. It's a waste of system resources, and I find it distracting.
  • Should I only download this, if I have the Creators Update?
