In a few days, neighborhood streets will be filled with ghosts and goblins in search of treats and hoping to play a few tricks along the way. Halloween is upon us and there are plenty of Halloween themed apps and games available in the Windows Phone Store to help get us in the mood for the eve of All Hallows.
Searching the Store for titles under the keyword "Halloween" we have plucked a handful of games and apps to highlight in this week's Windows Central Roundup. We have a few spooky games and a few apps that can help set the mood for a frightful evening.
If we've overlooked your favorite Halloween app or game, feel free to toss out your recommendation in the comments below.
Halloween Ringtones is a fantastic option to consider if you are looking to get your Windows Phone in the Halloween spirit. The app has an easy to use interface and forty-five spooky ringtones.
From howling wolves to evil laughter, the selection isn't too shabby. Colorful buttons illustrate the ringtone. You can tap the button to preview the sound and to save the Halloween sound, tap and hold the button to pull up the save option.
The only downside to Halloween Ringtones is a full-screen ad that greets you as Halloween Ringtones launches. You will need to tap the "Exit Ad" button at the bottom of this screen to proceed to the main page of the app.
Halloween Nightmare is a dark platform game that is available in the Windows Phone Store. You are awakened by a ghostly figure and find yourself compelled to search for him.
You work your way across an endless path that is full of dangers to avoid. You have giant spiders to leap over, falling chandeliers to dodge and other fatal traps. The game is dark and best played in a dimly lit room. Otherwise, you will miss a lot of the dangers and find your gaming character die and die often.
Controls are simple with on-screen buttons to control directional movement and jumping. You also have three lives per game and can even continue to play with a negative life counter. The path is broken down in segments where more information is revealed on the ghostly figure.
Halloween Nightmare is a challenging Windows Phone game that will test your skills at timing, observation and patience. It is a free, ad-supported game that isn't a bad time waster during Halloween or any other time of year for that matter.
Bubble Shoot Halloween
Bubble Shoot Halloween is a fun, bubble burst styled game from Magma Mobile. You are presented with a host of colored bubbles that you have to eliminate by shooting colored bubbles from a caldron of bubbly green goop. When you create a match of three or more of the same colored bubbles, they burst off the screen and earn you gaming points.
Bubble Shoot Halloween has two gaming modes. Challenge Mode has you clearing the screen of all bubbles as quickly as possible. Survival Mode has you clearing the field of bubbles as they advance down the screen. The longer you survive, the faster the bubbles advance down the screen and if they reach the bottom the game is over.
You do have a host of power-ups that can be used to help you survive the game. The graphics and animations for Bubble Shoot Halloween are well drawn up with that Halloween touch. Game play is challenging and overall, Bubble Shoot Halloween is a decent time waster of a game.
Scary Sounds HD
Much like Halloween Ringtones, Scary Sounds HD offers you a wide assortment of spooky, haunted sounds to get your Windows Phone in that Halloween mood. If my count is correct, the Windows Phone app offers you 48 scary sounds that can be used as ringtones or launched from within the app to put a chill in the night.
Sounds range from your traditional screams, wolf howls and evil laugh to ghost sounds, the theme from Friday the 13th and a scary piano. Just tap to highlight the sound selection and use the control buttons at the bottom of the listing to preview the sound, save it as a ringtone, share it with friends or visit the developer's Facebook page.
Scary Sounds HD isn't an overly complicated Windows Phone app, but it does deliver a nice variety of Halloweenish style sounds to your phone.
Blood from Butcher House
Blood from Butcher House is a collection of the scariest ghost stories around. The app delivers over 1,200 stories to your Windows Phone with new offerings added weekly. Categories of stories include personal experiences, urban legends, ghost and hauntings, horror stories and more.
You can create a user account (free) to comment and rate the stories, as well as visit the various chat rooms of the Butcher House. You can even create and submit your own scary story for consideration.
Settings allow you to change the font style, size, color and background of the reading screens. Blood from Butcher House does require a data connection to download the stories and in browsing through the collection, the Windows Phone app offers a vast range of tales. Stories are not divided by category, but can be searched by keyword or viewed by a latest and popular filter. The listings will note the stories skull rating and the number of comments on the story.
At last check, Blood from Butcher House is rated 4 Stars in the Windows Phone Store and should come in handy if you are in search for a scary campfire story or one to share with the kids to get them in the Halloween spirit. If you give Blood from Butcher House a try, let us know what you think of things in the comments below.
