How to remove the background picture on the Windows 10 sign-in screen

One of the new features on Windows 10 Insider preview build 10547 is the ability to remove the Windows background picture on the sign-in screen. Removing the picture is as easy as flipping a switch in the settings. If you need guidance, we'll show you how to do it.

1. Go to Settings (keyboard shortcut: Windows + I) > Personalization > Lock screen

2. Scroll down and turn off the option, "Show Windows background picture on the sign-in screen."

That's it! No, really… that's all you need to do. Instead of the default black and blue Windows 10 wallpaper on the sign-in screen, you'll see the solid color matching your theme. What would be even more awesome is if we have a built-in option to replace the image instead of just removing it. Hopefully, Microsoft will add that option in a future update.

Need more visuals? You can see this setting in our hands-on video for Windows 10 Insider preview build 10547.

Are you removing the Windows 10 wallpaper on the sign-in screen? Let us know in the comments!

  • Complaints about this article in 3...2...1
  • why would there be complaints?
  • Cause alot of people complain about articles like this. "You mean to tell me there are people who actually don't know how to do this shit? Have they not heard of google or YouTube??"
  • If nobody writes or make videos on these things then you won't be able to use Google or Youtube to get the help.
  • Not too concerned about login pic, just wondering if anyone knows how to removed email address that is displayed at login screen. Anyone know? Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Because you don't specify that this is not currently supported on the retail version of 10 on your heading
  • I take it you didn't bother to read the opening line of the article!?!
"One of the new features in Windows 10 Insider Preview..."
  • Turns out we complaining about your stupid comment
  • Thank God the chemtrail/geo-engineering brainwashing background can now be removed.
  • Agree! That "hero" picture is overrated! I don't like it though, I prefer the accent mono-color background!
  • That's because they paid so much for it that they have to prove themselves right about it.
  • I wonder how many remove it? I'm not on the Insider programme for W10 but once the option is included I will remove it. Just does not work for me, the angle does not match the OS and it is messy. Personal taste I know!
  • I removed it and changed the background instead using Windows 10 Login Background tool. I also not fond of Hero image, it looks rather don't blend too well with Windows 10 Modern UI. It feels like the image is more suited during Vista days. I rather have default image of a scenery, crisp artsy photography or vector art with flat design UI, not this Hero-like image. I don't get why Microsoft can't give us an option to follow the desktop background image as a login screen which make sense (they don't like making sense). Having same desktop background images gives nice transition from Login screen to Desktop/Start screen. Not to mention new Login screen needs alot of polish, it doesn't have animations especially when loggin in like we used to have in Windows 8.1 and even Windows 7. Also it lacks overall animation which feels static and ther are some layout issues too, like when you got incorrect password and Lockscreen sometimes have smaller icons and text. Seriously the Login and Lockscreen is totally unfinished.
  • That sign in screen with the plain red and black and grey number pad looks great!
  • My fav color
  • +1 Original thought concept behind metro look.
  • Metro is simplicity which is imo beautiful ;-)
  • Always wanted to remove that image! :P. Joking aside, it would've been better If they just allowed us to change it instead. Now they've got to add another option as I doubt they won't get flack if they took away the option to remove the background image completely.
  • I like the blue Windows login screen, removing it seems silly to me but an option to use your own background image would be cool if MS decide to do that Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • I can see why you use Android... /s
  • What's that got to do with anything? Yes I have a WINDOWS PC so I keep up to date with what's happening with WINDOWS 10, and I use and will always use an Android phone.
  • Well, now write an article that explains: How to change the background image on the Windows 10 sign-in screen. Please.
  • Off topic but what is the bottom left button on the pin entry pad?  It dosn't seem to do anything from what I can tell.
  • turns off the highlight when you press a key
  • Too bad the old Windows 7 registry modification to change the background image doesn't seem to work in Windows 10.
  • Sure would be nice if the damn thing would install. Turned on preview builds and set my desktop to Fast ring last night around eight. It's almost 3 PM the next day and it still isn't finding the stinking update. Instead, Windows Update is failing its face off at installing a security update for Flash. Yep, it's Windows for sure.
  • Really? It seems to be working for me. Don't worry, everyone hates flash, so blame Adobe!
  • It's a very common issue, I had it, too. Microsoft will surely provide a fixed update soon but until then you can also download and install it manually, which does work.
  • I cant find that option as of now. Perhaps there will be an update for this? Im fine with a Solid Color than the indoctrinating Windows Logo.
  • You guys should specify in the title that is only for insiders. This also happened recently with some new updates for apps that were available only for insiders. I don't like click bait titles. Please don't do this. I hate it. Thanks.
  • Yo...read the FIRST LINE of the article....
"One of the new features on Windows 10 INSIDER PREVIEW.."!!
  • Yeah, sometimes as i'm scrolling through the articles the mini article is not visible on the bottom of the screen, so i just click the big ass title to read.

  • Not using this build anymore. Installed it on my laptop through windows update and on my desktop through ISO and I get the same bsod on both of them. I actually noticed it on my laptop first and then I installed it on my desktop only to see the same bsod after having the PC on for about 5 mins. It no coincidence. Never saw that bsod before and I've been using Windows 10 for so long.
  • Windows 10 Official Backgrounds are really amazing to use
  • first thing i did after getting this build.
  • Great News! Time to sign in again as an Insider on my Laptop.
  • Is there a way to change this image on the Registry Editor?
  • It would be better to see tutorial how disable password check at all on lock sreen. Drives me nuts.
  • I have attempted these steps to change the background picture on the windows 10 log in screen in personalization. Get error message.
settings, personalization, lock screen, wait about 1 min or less, get the following error. There was a problem starting javascript. "\..\mshtml.dll
the parameter is incorrect. Steps on how to fix this error would be nice? Windows 10 64bit on PC, No touch screen. Orginal OS was Windows 7 64 bit (March 2010).
  • I don't like this feature which is why I found out how to disable it. I had no trouble turning the option off.
