Instagram is adding a text translation feature

After announcing that it has over 500 million users, Instagram has shared that it is working on a text translation feature that will go live next month. Once enabled, you'll see a "See Translation" button that automatically translates text in posts, comments or bios to your preferred language. At launch, 24 languages will be supported, and while there isn't a clear-cut timeline, the feature should be available to all users globally within a month.

The feature won't be available for older comments, as Instagram has started using machine learning to translate text recently.

  • Nice!
  • Why would machine learning prevent them from translating older comments? Shouldn't translation be realtime/ on-demand?
  • They're starting to process auto-translations for new comments, but the wording made it sound like it won't stretch back to older posts.
  • Nice
  • The app works great they just need to optimize a little bit more for Windows 10 more speed.
  • Yeah that's all great, but why are they doing this. Can't they just connect it with bing/google translate an it's a done deal?
  • Can an expert in this area tell me why Microsoft has stopped updating apps like Facebook, Messenger and Instagram for windows mobile 8.1? Because still in 8.1 its Instagram Beta. No Video nor DM. And most of the time it crashes. These days it cannot be opened. Facebook is worse. Showing the same post again and again. Sometimes it doesn't show the comments nor the likes. I was on Windows 10 non insider because red stone gives me a hard time. But since its not very good with my device (640 XL Dual Sim) I rolled back to 8.1 knowing the face that Microsoft has stopped updating apps of 8.1. If Microsoft are updating apps of Windows 10, they should update apps of 8.1 as well. Because not all want/can update to windows 10. I've been using Nokia more than a decade. And the recent behavior of Microsoft makes me leave :'(. The only reason I love my phone is because it doesn't lag/freeze + the camera. Don't get me wrong. But I'm really fed up and done :(.
  • Doing any work on the 8.1 is out of the question. Just go on the release preview ring and enjoy it.
  • I would loved to . But for some reason Win 10 doesnt work well on my device. When I upgrade to Non insider -> Sometimes keyboard doesn't pop up. Heats up. Dial pad crashes. Facebook beta, Messenger Beta and Instagram crashes. When I upgrade to Fast Ring -> Whatsapp wont open. Store app Crashes and sometimes the phone freezes. May be there is a problem in my device :(
  • Update to current threshold build (10586.420), hard reset, and don't restore any backups (restore files manually by copying them from your PC). I haven't experienced anything like that on my 1520 which is on 10586.420 right now.
  • I did that too. But didnt work out :(
  • I have Lumia 640 XL too with Windows 10 mobile on the build 10586.420 of the Production Release and I have no problems that would make me to roll back to Windows Phone 8.1.. Except that sometimes and only rarely that the keyboard won't show up but restarting the app would show it back though and not all the apps are listed in the Always Allowed App in the Battery Saver Options like Instagram and Messenger Beta,.. Otherwise everything works great. Windows 10 mobile needs a lot of patience.
  • Yeah, what phone do you have?
  • Did you try a hard reset before or after the update to Windows 10? Because I have also 640 XL and my mother also and with Windows 10 works fine. The only problem I have (but it's not a bug I guess) is living images are not much living with Windows 10. Anything else works ok.

  • Lol windows phone 8.1 is dead why do you want updated apps on old platform. They are supporting new platform windows mobile 10. It will get even better after anniversary update

  • I dont have that much of problems on latest non insider build .420 its perfect on my lumia 540. Maybe its your device specific problem
  • I thought because my device is dual sim, its giving me all this trouble :(
  • My device is also dual sim but i never tried insider build on it
  • Not sure about dual-SIM devices issues, but the Redstone build does have this issue. Must be fundamentally core OS issue why this is happening. My build .420 running stable on mine, not perfect but very acceptable. Still there are some bugs hanging around, Nothing too major in my experience but I bet some bugs may have domino effect causing some random devices having more issues that what it should be while some will be lucky not having noticable ones. This is why I can't considered W10M a rocksolid mobile OS at the moment, especially using older devices. Heck even with latest ones isn't safe from issues either. It seems this will be a situation for a while until they focus on polishing W10M throughly in the near future (maybe on Redstone 2).
  • Got a 640dual sim working fine on windows 10 mobile. Did u try upgrading again after u reverted back to 8.1?? Maybe that might fix the issues. And yea which build of win 10 where you on when u faced these issues?
  • I tried everything. Insider and Non Insider. And the recent non insider update I had was .420. The OS is not stable as 8.1. And the apps crash most of the time while I use them. May be the problem is in my device. Anyway can survive with 8.1. I use facebook, whatsapp and instagram most of the time. Thats why I'm worried about their updates :(.
  • Hello! I have an idea that might help you. I have the same device (Lumia 640 XL Dual Sim 3G model) and it's working very nicely with windows 10 mobile. One thing that I've done from the second I updated to Windows 10 Mobile is that I disabled the automatic app updates in the store. If you have this enabled, when the store finds updates for your installed apps, it starts updating them in the background. If you're using the phone at the same time, and especially the apps that are updating that time, the phone gets very laggy (and sometime restarts). I know this because a friend of mine had it enabled on her phone and when she told me about these problems, I told her that this have never happened to me. She asked me why, after checking her phone for a while I came to the conclusion that it's because I had disabled the automatic app updates while she hadn't. After I disabled it on her phone too, she hasn't complained since! What I do now is I check myself once a day for updates in the store, I wait for them to finish installing and then I use the phone without any problems for the rest of the day. The store still search for app updates, but it doesn't install them untill you go and install them your self. That way I get to know what gets updated too! I don't know if that helps, but I really hope it does! Something else that you can check is, if you have an SD card, it may have problems or it's just a slow card and it's causing problems with the apps that are installed on it. But I'm pretty sure the store issue is the one that's causing trouble. If not then I don't know how else to help ;( You've already done everything else so it may then be a device problem. I hope I helped!
  • Yes you are right while updating apps in the background you cant run those apps at that time it crashes and device restarts. Still minor bugs are there on latest non insider build for eg. 1.Cluttering issue on edge and wc app.
2.Phone takes a lot of time to get ready at startup.
    3.Sudden app crashing.
  • Hello, well first of those mentioned Apps are not from Microsoft thus MS is not reponsible if they are updated or not. I have the same device und just updated to the last Insifer Buld (Fastring) and so far no Problems at all. Maybe you want to give it another try?
  • I guess sir, as I mentioned in above replies, its just that only my device is giving this all sort of troubles :(. Thanks for the info about the app updates :). I like fast ring. But cant get into it. My phone goes nuts :'(
  • اخبار جيدة good news
  • Facebook pushes an update this morning.
  • That's nice
  • Instagram can't even make flawless video upload in their native app for Lumia950XL. I'm forced back on #6tag for that matter. This is frustrating...
  • Nice
  • I have a 950 and this app does is open and closes! Needs fixing! I am using 6tag now!
